And the reaching continues...

Gilbert and Johnson went right before our pick. Maybe we should of traded up to get one of these two unless Cable comes out and says Shaughnessy was the guy they wanted all along- BOOK IT.

At least we got someone to pressure the QB, lets hope hes not Quentin Moses.

This guy plays through injuries. Hes been hurt left and right and still gets back on the field.

Yep, my guess is that we were looking at johnson and Gilbert and when they went right in front of us we were looked into thinking DE. We suck.

Walter football.com had him ranked
#16 Matt Shaughnessy, Wisconsin
Height: 6-5. Weight: 266.
Projected 40 Time: 4.66.
Combine 40 Time: 4.91.
Pro Day 40 Time: 4.86.
Benchx225: 24. Vertical: .
Projected Round (2009): 5.
1/9/09: Matt Shaughnessy finished the year with eight TFL and four sacks. Will probably go higher than he should because of the lack of defensive end depth in this class.

11/16/08: Through 10 games, Matt Shaughnessy has three sacks and six TFL. 2007: A full-time starter as a sophomore, Matt Shaughnessy had four sacks in 2006. Yet another pure pass-rusher in this class, Shaughnessy is a high-character player that coaches love to have.

Haven't looked for or seen highlights. But...

At 253 on a 6'6" frame, he can put on weight to become a base end, if that's what the Raiders want. The Wisconsin program produces linemen who have solid fundamentals, tend to play against opponents who run pro style offenses, and know how to get the job done. we have another pick in this round. I'm sure the Raiders would have preferred Gilbert at that pick, who is a better athlete but needs more wok as a football player. Shaugnessy is more ready to play now, with apparently a lower potential topside. What's really to bitch about?

Not a 'bitch' but a valid concern is that players that can't get through a college season healthy rarely get through a pro season healthy. There's no denying the kid has talent but he's an injury risk and there's a VERY good chance he doesn't make it through an entire season without being put in IR. This is such a risky pick to make in the 3rd round. We need guys that can stay on the field.

Vin vin vin. WTF? Dude came back early from a knee injury his freshman season (starting as a 230lb DE) and started 33 straight games, and you're complaining about his health? Oh boy!

What am I concerned about? Not his health or toughness. Here's where I'm worried: 40 = 4.95, Shuttle 4.88. No speed at end. Low COD. Doesn't have a burst.

You can bet your ass we'll be bulking him up to handle the base end duties and working hard on his quickness cuz that's where he comes up short. They say he's a worker and kept surprising coaches. Okay, time for him to surprise us and make an impact.

from the Huddle Report:

Matt Shaughnessy DE Wisconsin

STRENGTHS

Matt is one of the most underrated D-linemen in this draft. He has excellent size and strength and is a technically sound D-lineman. He has played through debilitating injuries and has never complained or made any excuses. He never takes downs off and gets stronger as the game goes on. Matt is one of the best D-linemen I have seen in using his hands to free himself up. He could become one of the best D-linemen from this draft, but he has to stay healthy and learn to stay off the field until his injuries have healed completely.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE

This kid's true talents have been robbed because of some serious injuries. As I said before, if he can heal, you will see one hell of a player.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 2

Matt has first round talent that has been sucked right out of this him because of injuries. I know Matt's talent is lurking under some big time pain and a host of bad habits from playing with that pain. The kid is a warrior. I draft warriors. You're not taking a chance with Matt's character like so many other players in this draft; you are taking a chance on him getting healthy. I think it's a smart, calculated risk that I would gladly take in the second round of a draft. Matt could be an excellent strong side DE in a 4-3 defense or be used as a DE in a 3-4 defense. Matt also has the strength and size to put on a few more pounds and play a DT position in a 4/3 defense. That makes him very versatile. Matt is versatile because of his excellent overall athleticism. It's my opinion that too many people have forgotten about this kid's pure talent and, for some reason, think that this talent has left him just because of some injuries. All I can say to this is: I have not forgotten about this kid's talent and I don't believe for one minute that he no longer has those talents because of injuries that other players have had and have come back from very easily. Matt just got hit with these injuries all at once -- that's all that has happened.

My bad, I thought I read that he had missed parts of each season in college. If that's not the case then my comments no longer hold any water.

As frustrared as you are, bror, props for that above there. Too bad it will be ignored as the example.

Thanks Bird. Yeah, frustrated as hell but trying not to poison the rest of the posters anymore with my bitterness. They all deserve to have their hope.

With the extra picks we got from NE, no way we should not have trade up to get Gilbert or Johnson. The combination of Al and Cable is proving lame on draft day.

Personally, I'm glad we didn't trade up for Johnson. But Jaron Gilbert would have been awesome.

Man today, that's all we can have. This is a different but the same kind of Raiders draft.

I expect the coaches know what they're doing and can make something out of this draft class. Otherwise... the fuckers.
