Home Dog to open the AL

Gruden hasn't had a signature win in two years. His teams typically get their asses handed to them against good teams. Nothing in our defense makes me think we'll stop them from dinking and dunking all game long. Brees gets ball out quick. We just left Carolina's only weapon wide open on third and 15. Saints 35, Raiders 21. Cue up Fire Everyone thread.

Adam is such a pawn. Not only is Asher right, but the idea that Payton would risk further injury to MT in a non-conference game they are favored to win, by a lot, even w/o MT is moronic. But for opening night in Vegas, I’d even consider resting Ruggs for the same reason. Far more important to beat NE and/or Buff than NO if we want to make the playoffs.

Despite his high ankle sprain, Saints WR Michael Thomas “felt fantastic” at practice Wednesday and there’s a “little glimmer of hope” he can play Monday night, per source. It’s still unlikely, but the Saints were pleased and surprised at Thomas’ progress and condition Wednesday.

The real question is not whether or not Michael Thomas suits up and plays Monday night. The real question is how effective he can be with a high ankle sprain in a position that requires speed and change of direction. We've seen player try and fail to be effective before.

Look at this way. You get to go to bed early.

I’d disagree, I’d say Chicago was a signature win.

It was a huge win as it helped our draft return for the Mack pick. I dont know if i would call it a signature win. Not to that level imo.

That is is sensible position.

Thing is, is you want attack, run multiple A-gap blitzes, you need a couple of things from your roster:

Guys who can play press man on an island. #27 is that guy, #20 may well be such a guy.

You need a MIKE who knows the system and can keep everyone on the same page in response to the O once the play clock hits 15 (and the speaker in the green dot helmet goes quiet. Kwiatkowski was that guy. We'll see how long he's out.

You need a smart D-line that can play with both quickness and discipline. The faster a guy gets off the less time an O-lineman has to do anything. Ferrell is playing faster this year and that is helping. Without even watching the film he knew what the D-line's problem was Week 1: not staying in rush lanes, not identifying and beating the one-on-ones. With no film to go on into that game, it's easier to understand why that was even if we don't accept it as an excuse.

There is years of tape on Brees with his personnel in that system.

Guenther is who he is, and when he has what he needs his defenses are both good and scary to opposing OCs. The cupboard was bare three years ago, and looking at the roster from the D side, ain't many left, and most gone are out of the League.

And if Brees has his the issues it seems from Week One that he has, this is a game where only dump-offs and screen are an issue.

I don't disagree. My main issue with PG is that it seems like no matter the player's background (FA, draft pick, etc), they all look lost or in the wrong position. And I can't stand playing soft on 3rd and short.

But his defense can work. Hopefully, it does.

Your breakdown of football is top notch. I always appreciate such intelligent takes.

Shit. We only break this streak if we mix things up and effectively pass the ball to push that 8th defender out of the box. We play to our tendencies, we’ll get stuffed like everyone else.

RT @JTTheBrick: What a stat @MikeTriplett just told me. The #Saintshave gone 44 straight games without giving up 100 yards rushing. Calling on @iAM_JoshJacobs to break this streak! #RaiderNation

I was actually looking at this game and wondered to myself when the last time a guy went over 100 on them. 44 games is a lot more than I thought it would be.

Might end Monday.

Guenther’s defense has never been scary lol. At its best it gave up a lot of yards but tightened up in the red zone. He’s coverage centric more so than attacking.

Honestly I think when he first arrived he called good games and we had a bunch of old dudes that were physically overmatched and then wound up hurt and or cut.

I honestly think as the talent level has gotten better on that side, his game calling has gotten progressively worse.

Seems so long ago I can’t even remember.

His scheme just requires so much talent as well as football IQ that we’re more likely to get struck by lightning than see a elite level defense IMO.

When I say early, I mean like the first couple of games. Wheels came off 3-4 weeks in. Plus the offense sucked too.

This HAS to be his last year to turn the defense around. I hope.
