So we interviewed LaMelo Ball, which isn’t surprising, but the buzz that he’s an actual possibility for the Warriors is getting louder.

Looking at it objectively he’s got the size, ball handling, and vision to play a Livingston type role. He needs to get stronger but he’s not allergic to playing defense. On the flip side he’s a chucked that can’t really shoot and isn’t athletic enough to get to the rim consistently. Huge/risk reward pick.

    Alright @BigTron who's your top 5?

Right now I think I go the following:

Okoro - he's NBA ready physically and has an elite skill set with his defense. Fits that perimeter defensive junkyard dog position we've been missing and gives a strong backup option should Wiggins not work out.

Vassel - super athletic, great defender, good shooter. Prototypical 3&D player.

Nesmith - Klay Thompson Jr. Best shooter in the draft, can play off ball, not super athletic, defensive potential but will need to develop.

Okongwu - undersized center in the Marquese Chriss mold but probably better defensively. Great shot blocker, can play in a switching system, plus athleticism. He may be redundant with guys already on the roster though.

Anyone one of Wiseman/Edwards/Ball - maybe it's a case of being picked over to death but I think I'm more excited by finding a high level rotational player than a boom or bust potential star. I think I like Wiseman the least of the bunch though. Not sure he fits what we like to do on either side of the floor and best case scenario it'll be at least a year before he's ready to contribute.

You think Wiggins gets moved again?

I think they’ll see what he can bring first. Kerr has been pretty positive about him during the mini camps and they’re talking about using him as a small ball 4 at times. Plus we’d have to attach assets to move him which will hurt our ability to rebuild depth. After he’s only got two years on his contract after this coming season which makes him easier to trade if needed. Use the draft pick on a guy like Okoro to fill the Iguodala role, tax payers exemption for a beefier center, and hope the youngsters develop into decent rotation players.

This draft is so confusing. I have no idea what the Warriors will do. I think it comes down to whomever tests well with them during their visit. The eyeball test workout and personality match will be deicidng factors maybe?

I like Wiseman bc he has the size you want at C and can run the floor. I think he fits a major need and has enough upside to warrant the #2 pick. The Warriors could use some length and athleticism. I get that he has very little tape and seems risky. I cant imagine him not be able to play NBA minutes early tho. He is a physical freak and we've seen rookies contribute to playoff teams in the past. I don't buy that he cant get coached up before the playoffs and contribute some early minutes at C.

I also like Okongwu. He seems like he could be another Draymond type presence for us on defense. His size is troublesome but he can switch the 5/4/3 spots today on defense. I imagine that would be something the Warriors would love moving forward. It does nothing to help our size or scoring, but he has intangibles that help you win. A great longterm fit that matches what the Warriors like to do.

Haliburton is an efficient player who could step in and be the back-up PG/SG and give Steph a chance to rest without the wheels falling off. I like Jordan Poole as the #3 PG/SG as a compliment. I could also see us taking Killian Hayes for the same reasons. We need a reliable back-up PG currently. Lot of FA vets that fit the bill tho.

Im not into L.Ball. His shooting form is atrocious and he comes w the family baggage distraction. His passing is elite, ill give him that. But I also don't trust his height / length. I bet he measures at 6'5 not 6'7. I worry about his defense early in his career should he not be 100% all in. And for those reasons... no thank you.

Im not sure about Okoro. The Warriors would love another strong defender with upside and athletic ability + youth. But this dude has no offense besides dunks right now. Can we really have another wing who cant score when Draymond is being paid heavily. Cant imagine those two fitting together great other than defense. I do think the Warriors will love this guys upside. Maybe they trade down for him. Perimeter defenders are in high demand.

D.Vassell & Saddiq Bey are both good players who fit what we need as far as 3&D. I could see either one being an option in a trade down scenario.

Obi Toppin wouldn't shock me as the pick either. He seems like a dude who can get you 15+ every night efficiently and that's valuable s shit. I think he is a tweener on defense which makes me wanna pass. I think his athleticism and dunking adds some extra juice to his resume. Maybe he can use that to improve defensively. He has springs and seems smart as far as IQ. Slow feet and undersized might be the dagger that keeps him from being great tho. Could do worse that adding 15+ points a gamete the bench/offense and some crowd pleasing dunks.

Edwards. I get the vibe the Warriors are willing to gamble on this young man. I think he may be the target at #2. He's raw and needs to be coached up big time. But he has the natural size, power and explosion you want in a SG. Potentially this player could bring an ability to attack the rim this team lacks. The Warriors need more players who get tot he basket and FF line. I think Edwards could be that guy. He chucked a bunch of hero ball shots in college and his numbers look shitty. He also had lapses on defense and seemed unfocused or undisciplined at times. Maybe that can be chalked up to huge expectations and poor handling by the coaches. His Georgia team was terrible and nobody respected the shooters. The lane was often clogged forcing him to over shoot from 3. I don't think that's his game. He should be off ball and cutting to the basket all day. If the Warriors think they can coach out some of the bad decision making I think he fits great. Another very young, high upside player who doesn't lack the confidence to take big shots. He could potentially start off as a bench spark plug who gets tons of looks with the second unit. Him a Paschall would be our major young bench guys fighting for big minutes and give us trade chips moving forward.

Deni Advija. Another piece that makes a ton of sense. He seems like a glue player with a good attitude. #2 seem kinda risky to me bc his number were not great until his last games (which is a good in a way also) He screams Steve Kerr pick to me hahah Seems like a hard worker and hustle type player. He moves the ball around good. He runs the floor and does little things that help you win. Can he defend in the NBA? Can he make the 3 ball? IDK those things. He does has decent size at 6'9. Can dunk on people and run the break wlell, so he isn't slow footed per say.

I think the smartest move would be to trade down and save some money while picking up a role player on a cheap contract. If we can find a rotational veteran and slide down and draft a Nesmith type I be ok with that. The roster still need wing depth, back-up PG & a big man with size. A trade down may bring in an extra body while saving some money. I think the Warriors are debating using that 17 million TPE bc it results in a 100 million more money owed for the GS front office. Maybe trading down and saving some money would help convince them to use the 17 TPE?

I think the Warriors can rehab his value more. In all honesty playing w Steph, Draymond & Klay makes you and your numbers look way better. No chance he doesn't look the best he ever has next season IMO. Not saying that makes him a valuable asset. But I think another year off that contract and some improvement makes him more easily tradable should the Warriors want to move him. He is about to get so many wide open looks and cuts next year. If Draymond can get him to step up the team defense IQ, I think he no longer needs picks attached to him to move and becomes only a overpaid contract that clogs your salary and not a negative asset people do not want. They will play this like the D-Russ situation. He gets a interview with the Splash Bros to see how he fits. I thought he was solid in his Warriors debut last year honestly. D was serviceable.

TLDR: Dude is 6'7 and scores 20 a game. I expect his best bball next year so moving him now with no sizable wing that's scores 15+ to replace him would be ill advised. Especially if you're adding valuable picks to move him. I think he stays barring a major trade for someone like Beal, Embiid, Simmons, Butler etc

    TLDR2:

Curry, Edwards, Klay, Wiggins, Draymond = new small ball death line-up:boxing:

2 elite shooters, two rim runners with hops and size & Draymond at Point C! Find some size and defense to balance that out and give traditional looks.

    PG - Jeff Teague - SG - A. Burks SF- GR3 PF Paschall C - Looney

    PG
    - Poole - SG - Mulder - SF- Lee - PF - Smiley C- Chriss

Sub out someone for a 7 foot vet center. Or draft one to develop. Make moves before trade deadline to fix errors. Keep the 2021 picks at all costs!

The one thing about Hayes and Halliburton is that they’re both primarily P&R point guards which isn’t going to fly here. LaMelo is actually the better fit for us in that regard. Poole has also been getting developed exclusively at PG I think and it sounds like he really shined at the mini camp. Everything is a smokescreen obviously but the recent comments by Meyers and Kerr really make me think athletic wing. We need that guy who can just go out and erase the opponents best player which is why I like Okoro. Kerr also mentioned Wiggins playing some PF which means we need a versatile wing to slide in next to him.

Ball has talent and if his size checks out I'd be more into drafting him. His passing and handles are elite. His shooting is worse than mine tho hahah Cant imagine seeing him and Draymond both standing at the 3 point line with nobody guarding them, that's my only worry. With that's said, I kinda disagree with most fans that we should be drafting for next season. The Warriors should honestly just go BPA. They have the #2 and two good picks next year. That is a great set of assets for long term success. No reason they shouldn't be eyeing a transition from the Splash brothers A LITTLE.

Id be ok with drafting players who need to sit a year +. Curry has 4-5 more years left of a window IMO. No reason to get all crazy for next season. I will say that Smiley looks lost still and he may need to go if we want any other bench spots for grooming. He does not look ready yet. I do like his touch and athletic ability for his size. But he needs another year of ball to even get real minutes for us. Cant have another guy like that on the bench IMO. Only one spot to waste IMO.

the 2021 draft its CRAZY stacked. We should have a pick somewhere between 6-12 from the Wolves and our pick. Myers should reload this roster.

ALSO: We have nailed our second round picks. Im sure the Warriors can find a guy who does ONE good thing in round two. A wing who plays D. A big as 7 foot C. Someone who can shoot 3's etc. Im thinking we could snag a solid player like we did in years past with our 2nds (Paschall, Dray)

I do believe the Warriors roster makes everyone look better if they can fit a need.

I’m all about BPA since we’ve realistically got needs at every position anyway. Problem is that the only guy I see with obvious star potential is Edwards but there are just so many questions about how badly he really wants it. We’re already trying to rehab one physically talented, no heart top draft pick. I’m not sure adding another to the mix is the right move for our culture. The last thing we need is Edwards and Wiggins latching on together like Wiggins and KAT did in Minnesota.

As far as Wiseman goes... I couldn’t find the article but Myers recently did an interview and spoke a little about NBA bigs and his number one thing was switch ability and being able to defend the perimeter, which sounds a lot more like Okongwu to me but also makes me think he’s good with what we already have in that regard too. Might just be looking for a low cost guy that can bang down low to round the rotation out too. Another thing to consider with Wiseman is that Kerr hates boneheaded centers and I can’t imagine one that’s basically a high schooler is going to crack his rotation anytime soon.

Deni I’m just not sure what he is. Numbers suggest he can’t really shoot but he’s also not a guy that going to go mix it up down low either. Omri Casspi is hyping him up to the Warriors though so you never know. I am superstitious with foreigners though lol. Seems like every time one hits (Luka, Dirk, Yao) teams spend the next couple of drafts trying to draft the *next version.

Obi Toppin gives me Michael Beasley vibes.

TL;DR version - lots of options, no obvious slam dunk. Iggy comps for Okoro give me a woody.

I'm not really enamored with this draft. And like @gst8 alludes to, its going to be tough for a young dude to crack this lineup right away. Just wish there was a blue chipper in this draft. I definitely don't want Ball. Don't need that circus sideshow. Wiseman is too raw.

I just assume see if we could flip this pick with Minnesota's first for an established veteran guy. Preferably a post presence. Then use that MLE for a bench scorer/defender.

    https://www.thestepien.com/2020/02/17/isaac-okoro-scouting-report-2/

Good write up on the strenghts/weaknesses of Okoro.

Really reads like an Iggy clone except for the wingspan (Andre was a freakish 6'11). Bigger than Andre though.

We need a guy to throw at LeBron, Kawhi, Paul George, Harden, etc. for heavy minutes so the other guys don't have to spend all that energy on defense.

Dubs just worked out Deni Avdija and apparently really like what they saw. Kerr was in attendance.

Granted I don't watch much of these guys pre-draft but can't shot and slow footed? Ugh.

Supposedly a good character guy and does the little things well.

Sounds like a BBall Clelin Ferrell.

Saddiq Bey’s name attached to the Dubs now.

Good 3 point shooter (weird form though), crazy 7 foot wingspan, average athlete. Sounds like a rich man’s version of what Jacob Evans was supposed to be.

That Israeli kid might be a better fit for you. Or the Georgia kid who could wind up being Mitch Richmond Part Deux.

Lonzo Ball sucking in the NBA is probably doesn’t help his cause though.

Just flip Wiggins, the #2 and possibly something else for Bradley Beal. A guy who can play alongside and aging Klay and Steph right now.

The $ part of that could be tricky though.

I’m still trying to figure out what Avdija does well tbh. Maybe a worse shooting Mike Dunleavey Jr? Seems like his hype is riding Luca’s coattails.

The wrap on Edwards is lazy/apathetic kinda like a certain SF we already have. I do like him as a guy we can pick and include in a bigger trade later though.

Ball kid is intriguing... clearly the best playmaking PG of the draft but I wouldn’t have the guts to take him.

Beal is a bad fit IMO. Strictly a shooting guard and I don’t think Klay guard SF consistently. Plus Beal and Curry is a terrible defensive pairing in the backcourt.

If I had to guess it’s Wiseman just because Kerr and Meyers have kind of indirectly shot him down while pumping up a bunch of other guys.

Now the Dubs putting it out there that they really like Wiseman. This is some next level smokescreen shit for a team that picks 2dn overall lol.

    And this...

So far, the Warriors have leaked or had reported interest in: Anthony Edwards James Wiseman Deni Avdija Tyrese Haliburton Onyeka Okongwu Obi Toppin Killian Hayes Devin Vassell And that’s assuming they don’t trade the pick. They’ve played the media draft process well.

The Warriors reportedly "for sure" are considering Obi Toppin with the No. 2 pick in the draft.
