Somebody for us to watch after Gruden continues losing is the new QB coach for the Eagles. He's the guy who has developed Dan Mullens' QBs in his last few years, first Prescott and now Trask. He got promoted to OC this past year, and his team put out just as much output as the LSU guy who went to the Panthers.

I hear he's a bright guy who after he learns the pro game will probably be a hot name. Might line up with Gruden finally being embarrassed enough to quit in a couple of more years.

Came up about this time last year when he was getting passed over. This might be a superficial reason although there are probably coaches in the league with similar checkered backgrounds (although most are probably grandfathered in prior to cancel culture). I'm with @Raider Outlaw that he's probably just not that impressive in the room. I wouldn't read too much into Reid's support either. Pumping up your assistants is basically NFL guy code.

Yep. Plus, Reid probably wants him to move along so he can promote somebody else and keep things fresh. He probably gets in ruts and would like to bounce things off somebody else new over time.

I think people who are advocating for him are saying why can't this guy get a job when it usually goes coordinator for hot offense or defense, automatic head coaching job.

I don't know, but I also don't think the world's mysteries are wrapped up in why he can't get hired.

He probably needs to go study at Easterby's feet to learn how to do this shit.

I know whenever I had job interviews early on out of college, the first thing I did was learn everything I could about the company and the people in power positions so that I could bring some superfluous bullshit up to flatter them during the process if necessary. Never came in handy, but I could see how that could especially be good for a job interview in such an exclusive club like the NFL.

Purely speculation on my part but I bet a lot of his value to Reid is as an ex-player intermediary to the players as well. With a guy that can QB whisper and scheme the shit out of an offense and another that can communicate in a way that the players respect you have the complete coaching package. That second part isn't nearly as valuable without the first though. Or at least it's a pretty tough sell in an interview if you're not super charismatic in a way that transcends the locker room to the board room.

It's always what Mahomes brings up about him commanding the room and having great communication skills of the unit.

That time in Colorado as the OC isn't helping him though. That shit went badly.

    Maybe he learned something?

If I am Henry, I am terrified because Downing's version of the run game was the obvious single back run. His running game made Gruden's running game look subtle.

Remember all of that wizard talk about him leading up to the year? We thought we had a young Bill Walsh on staff.

I bet Downing does just fine in his new role within a functional coaching staff in a functional organization.
