Coach Gruden Part II

The Gruden hate is amazing. NFL.com says that “zero” HC have winning records after returning to the NFL after 10 years. Okay. Let’s ignore that Dick Vermeil was out of coaching for 15 years, came back, and led the Rams to it’s only SB ring, then rebuilt KC and led them to a 13-3 season. What a joke.

It’s weird, even a lot of the fantasy football writers I follow, who are typically numbers based and somewhat objective, have latched on to the “1998” narrative. It’s not like Gruden wasn’t studying modern football all this time, and he’s gonna run some prehistoric offense.

I’m taking advantage, getting a lot of Carr late in damn near every draft I’ve done.

My guess, Gruden was engaged in self-deprecating humor, which everyone took seriously. And then it took on a life of its own. But who knows? Maybe Gruden planned it and is playing everyone.

Im glad people are starting to hate the Raiders openly again. It felt weird when everyone was on the bandwagon before last season.

The Eagles won the SB by throwing assets at OL/DL in 2018. The Raiders are clearly following that design (Gruden even says this in interviews) How is that 1998? Because he talks FB/TE, running game and play action passing I suppose. But he understands building thru the trenches still works.. ask our draft board.

Would not be surprised if there is a big uptick in FB snaps this year and the next few years with so many pass rushing DL, smaller/coverage LB and nickel schemes.

Ya, that's going to be part of my plan when I have my draft in late August. I'm going to grab a hold of a few Raiders later on in the draft. I think Nelson is going to be a real nice FF WR, and after a down year I should be able to get him much later in the draft.

I think Gruden's comments are also in relation to something that was going on last year. It's kind of cryptic, but it seems the Raiders had an advanced analytics team that thought highly of the Raiders offense last year. On several occasions, Del Too mentioned that "we have stats that show our offense is doing well this year" including in a testy radio interview with Damon Bruce.

I think last year's team may have gotten ahead of itself with it's commitment to analytics, and they failed to look at what was actually happening on the field. And Gruden was saying, we are going to put a team on the field that performs on the field, not in untested advanced metrics .

Or maybe I'm wrong and Gruden doesn't like advanced stats at all .

I took Gruden's 1998 comments as: "Don't expect us to run some bullshit spread offense the entire game out of shotgun" AKA "Im about to smash mother fuckers with the run game & bring this offense some balance"

It sounds like a higher energy. He's into everything.Watching everybody. And yet somehow he makes it more fun. That doesn't really have a "timeframe".

He will mix it up.Hold everyone accountable.Move forward with whoever makes the cut.It ain't rocket science.

Pretty simple really.

Yet it's a science that has eluded every coach we've had since Gruden left for TB. I can't wait to say Good-by to Reggie Mackenzie he has turned this team into a place no FA worth a hill of beans will consider.

J Nelson and R Melvin say hi. :fu:

I honestly don’t get how you could look at the totality of this team and NOT think smash mouth was the way to go.
