We all know that you don't WIN BIG in the NFL without the players.

The years Gruden WON BIG in the NFL (2000, 2001, 2002), his teams were pretty well stacked.
And he also had a lot of savvy vets.

The 2018 Raiders are still pretty far from that, right?

So who is going to assemble the roster?

    Blockhead?

And if Jon is getting $100,000,000, you KNOW he is going to have say in personnel moves/drafting.

Does Jon know personnel really well?

I am IN with the Gruden hire, so don't get me wrong.
The contract is a bit crazy, but it's not my money and it doesn't count against the cap.

But putting the pieces in place.

I do have concerns about that.

If Davis gets word that the NFL is ramping up to harshly sanctioned him so that the league can be politically correct, I'd do a live interview with this George MF (or a friendly reporter if Mark's not up to the task) and shred him by (1) making the guy own up to Al and Mark's legacy of inclusion, putting him on the defensive, (2) embracing the Rooney Rule, neutralizing his argument, (3) explaining the rule's purpose, it's proper application, and good it has done, but why applying it as George and others are advocating makes a mockery of the rule and jeopardizes its existence, (4) bafoon the mother fucker at each opportunity citing the Raiders' history of inclusion, pointing out that he met with, and hired, his dream coach who was unemployed, where the NFL rules prevented him for interviewing coaches this guy wanted him to interview, and (5) point out that he complied with the rule--his minority GM interviewed two minority canidates before he hired Gruden, end of interview.

I can't stand that no one is pushing back on this bogus Rooney Rule mob of reporters and talking heads, including local beat writers, trying to sham the NFL to sanction the Raiders. Go on offense Bowl Cut!

Jon didn't sign up and not have control of the roster that is for sure. He also added employees to the personnel department as part of his deal.
He says he knows more about personnel than he used to and also thinks more about the future. We are going to find out this off season.

That's the $64k question. All of this hinges on that. Imo, the thinking by Mark (who is a dummy so that's kind of not a good gauge) is that Reggie's personnel is very good. They just need a good coach for them.

I can't disagree with him that his first 2 hires were subpar, but I still don't know about Reggie either. He's picked some bad players.

It also underlines how stupid writers are. I know I have seen written in a few places that he's walking into a better situation than he did last time, which is silly talk. Outside of Carr, the guards, and Mack, who else would you take on these rosters over that 1998 team? I'd even take Jett over Crabtree and Roberts. I'd argue that those 90s Raider teams were top 10 in the league before he got here (people forget the back to back 8-2 starts when Hoss got hurt before the Bugel disaster season).

So yeah, interestingly enough, the question that no one is asking is can this new adoration of the Raider front office be as good as the last time that Al was pretty good picking players, which served Gruden well. We'll see.

I don't think much changes in the personnel moves/drafting department. Red is still going to be the man, and much like with JDR, Gruden is going to have a strong voice in the War Room. The biggest difference I think we'll see is a clear cut plan of what we want out of FA and the draft.

The Steelers and Ravens both typically know what they want players to look like and how they fit into their system. I'm confident Gruden and Gunther can draw an outline of what they want the team to look like. Together they should be able to bring in the right players to fill in that picture rather quickly.

JDR had no plan, no outline and brought in coaches who stylistically didn't mesh.

Maybe Gruden can just claim his gender identity as female... and identifies as an Indian female at that.

We judge drafts by results on the field and preconceived notions about players going into the draft. Unfortunately, they don't televise war rooms or release big boards and scouting reports after-the-fact (unless your Dallas at least). We don't have the benefit of evaluating drafts with full information in real time.

Your best bets? @007 charges $19.95. And ignore Poptart, aka, JonJon.

Good quote from Bruce Arians on vertical passing game. Hope Gruden goes more vertical than last time coaching

The MMQB: As the game evolved into more of a controlled, short-passing style, you didn’t change. You always took shots downfield, and took pride in being sort of anti-West Coast. Why?

Arians: History says you cannot nickel-and-dime your way in the NFL. You have to have chunk plays. And our goal was to have six chunks every game, and hopefully two of those chunks were touchdowns. The statistics would say you would win those games. I respect Bill Walsh. I hate the West Coast offense. I do love the style and understand it, but unless you have Joe Montana and guys like Jerry Rice who would take a five-yard pass and go 25—and that’s okay because we kind of turned into that some in later years because we couldn’t protect, and we had that in our offense—but those chunk plays, man that’s what I love and that’s what I believe in. When I played quarterback, I lived for that play, and I guess that really goes back to that wishbone philosophy: We’re going to run, run, run, but when we throw, we want a big-play touchdown.

What a novel concept... Bring in coordinators that have similar philosophy.

    https://www.fanragsports.com/examining-potential-candidates-to-finish-jon-grudens-staff/

Gruden’s hire of Derrick Ansley from the University of Alabama is an intriguing one. Ansley has coached at several major college programs but doesn’t have any NFL coaching experience. He was, however, trusted to coach defensive backs for Nick Saban, which is a big deal. It might be the position group that Saban watches most closely, and his defensive playbook and coverages are as complicated and nuanced as any in the NFL. Defensive coordinator Paul Guenther uses similar pattern-match principles in his defense to what Alabama does, so their philosophies match up.

Ansley paid his dues and worked his way to get to where he is today. With how careful Gruden has been with his hires so far, one has to think he really sees something special in Ansley.

I think the whole Tice fucking shit up has legs. If you had one of the better O-line coaches in the league wouldn't you try and keep him? Now he could have said "no, Fuck this shit I'm out" but, I guess we'll find out if he leaves and doesn't get a gig.

I still am not sure what the Jack Del Rio plan was. Copy some of the Seattle defensive schemes and run it regardless of personal? Throw the ball as much as possible in a spread offense?

I expect the draft picks to sync WAY better now. Im hoping we can save Kujo too. He looked a step ahead in college and looks unconfident now. Size be damned, he should be more consistent in pass coverage next year after getting his feet wet these first years. His run D is very good. Torched in coverage tho. Gotta fix him.
