Amari Cooper makes a surprise appearance at practice and is trying to play Sunday vs. Chiefs
By Vic Tafur 17 hours ago
Raiders receiver Amari Cooper, all but counted out for Sunday’s game at Kansas City, was a surprise participant at practice on Friday. He was limited and is listed as questionable for the game, but make no bones about it, Cooper is trying to play and his teammates think that he will.
Cooper hadn’t practiced in two weeks after he sustained a concussion and ankle injury in a violent collision early in the Broncos game on Nov. 26. He was cleared from the NFL’s concussion protocol on Wednesday afternoon.
“It would be huge to get Amari back,” tight end Jared Cook said after practice. “It would really help us, all the respect that he gets from defenses. We need all of our guys back for the run that we’re on.”
The Raiders (6-6) have won two straight games and would at least break a portion of their three-way tie with the Chiefs and Chargers for first in the AFC West with another win.
Cooper “moved around pretty good today,” Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said. “We’ll see. He’s questionable, and we’ll see. … Moved around pretty well today.”
The Chiefs were planning on not seeing Cooper, and would have their hands full considering they suspended their top cornerback, Marcus Peters, for leaving the field and going into the locker room after he threw an official’s penalty flag into the stands last week.
Cooper had 11 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns in the Raiders’ 31-30 win over the Chiefs in Oakland on Oct. 18. And that was with Peters, who was mostly covering Michael Crabtree on the other side of the field.
“The type of player that he is, the things he does with the ball in his hands — everybody gasps — that is definitely a big boost,” running back Jalen Richard said. “Teams double-team him or make sure they always have their eye on him, so he adds to our offense just with that. We need him.”
Cook had six catches for 107 yards in that earlier win over the Chiefs. He said he has seen a lot of coverages with two defenders over him since that Broncos game, when Cooper was knocked out and Crabtree was ejected for getting in a fight.
Sunday will be Crabtree’s first game back since he was suspended for last week’s win over the Giants.
