According to this story on ESPN.com we nearly traded Randy Moss to the Packers for Rodgers:

One was the Green Bay Packers, whose fans Moss had pantomimed mooning in 2005. (That this was a response to Green Bay fans' actually mooning Moss and the opposing teams was left unsaid at the time.) Rumors linked Moss to the Packers throughout February and March, and the player who was reportedly heading to Oakland in return for Moss ended up piecing together a decent career for himself. Both Pro Football Talk and Michael Felger of the Boston Herald suggested that the Packers were ready to swap then-backup quarterback Aaron Rodgers as part of a deal for Moss, with Felger suggesting on March 15 that the trade was "on the verge of being announced."

This is old. I think Al alluded to it when somebody asked him about why he didn't trade for him during one of the meandering coach searches afterward in a press conference. I know the Packers didn't want him because he was a bad practice player for a long time and had that rep.

I think I remember that, too...

"Aaron Rodgers is NOT a great playah. Get ovah it!"

I don't remember this at all...and I would think I would have. However, I did try to block a lot of those years out.

We would have ruined him no doubt.

This times a million. Who was the coach back then....Lance? I remember Favre and his agent were pushing for it hard because him and Moss were friends or something. I do remember Al giving the explanation that he looked into him and asked people about Rodgers as his reasoning for not pulling the trigger. That 4th round pick was so much better.

I don't know if Jerry's transcripts of those days are still around, but I distinctly remember it being in one of those sitting sessions after the press conferences when Al would just shoot off the hip about a bunch of stuff, and it was not right after we traded him. It was either during Cable's hiring press conference or maybe Hue's. Because it was when he was saying Bellichick tampered with him. He was saying Bellichick knew he could run and was saying our coaches were scared of him, so he had to trade him.

That definitely sounds like something Al would say...I just really don't remember hearing us being linked to Rodgers at all. Just caught me by surprise when I was reading the article today.

I remember driving from FL to VA the day Rogers was drafted. I hit an area where I couldn't get any reception. Then I got reception again and heard the Raiders had traded up into the first round. I started telling my wife we traded up for Rogers, he's the only person worth it. 2 minutes later I heard we drafted Fabian Washington and I almost ran off the road.

Bad memories.

This came out not long after al died. Talk about a trade that changes a lot for 2 franchises.

Happy with dc and to be away from those years.

It was definitely a popular 'rumor' for awhile. It comes up a few times a year on boards I look at. The most common rumor I've heard is that Al wasn't ready to let Moss go. Favre was reportedly pushing hard for Moss at that time as well.

Yeah...that was it.
