Well shit, another one in the books. Ended in the worst possible way but it’s time to look forward. We currently have the following players under contract: Curry, Draymond, Iguodala, Livingston, Damian Jones, Jacob Evans, and McKinnie. Technically KD is under contract but it’s a given he’ll opt out just like it’s a given that we resign Klay and likely Looney. That leaves Boogie, Cook, Bell, Bogut, and Jerebko as players out of contract. Boogie and Bogut are known to be gone. Jerebko doesn’t really fit our new timeline and I’m not wasting my time on someone that can’t get any run in the playoffs. I think Jordan Bell and Steve Kerr will be mutually happy to go their separate ways (although Bell has said he wants to come back). He just hasn’t shown the IQ to consistently stay on the court. Cook? Meh. We also have Damion Lee and Marcus Derrickson on 2 way contracts, both of which offer interesting options for next season. Two storylines I’m looking forward to seeing outside of the Klay/KD free agent drama fest? Jacob Evans transitioning to PG and whether we end up drafting Alen Smailagic. Free agents we could be looking at: The only two names getting thrown out there with any appeal to me are Seth Curry and Austin Rivers. We’re low key short on shooters and both of those guys can provide it plus they’re young enough to contribute beyond next season unlike other names getting thrown out like Ariza, Faried, etc. Rudy Gay is a guy to keep an eye on if KD leaves, not that he’d fill his shoes but we need at least one decent isolation scorer. Terrence Ross is out there but I’m thinking we could get most of what he provides from Steph’s bro in law for a lot cheaper and already familiar with the team. Important dates: June 29th deadline for KD to pick up/decline his player option. The draft is this Thursday. I usually don’t follow it too much unless we’re picking in the lottery but with the hype around that Smailagic kid it’ll be interesting to see which way we go. I’m going to dig around later and see what I can come up with in terms of draft prospects. The rest: I have to admit it’s going to be kind of fun to watch the dogfight for the West this year. Apparently there’s some uncertainty to whether the Lakers actually have the cap room to sign a 3rd max player. I guess AD has a $4m bonus due at some point in the next few weeks and when the trade is actually completed determines whether it goes against LA or NO’s cap. That team needs a 3rd star and even then they’re still short on shooting. Plus AD being injury prone. That said, it’ll still be fun watching LA steal the bone right out of Houston’s mouth. All signs point to a messy breakup between the Rockets and Chris Paul. It’s possible he ends up bought out for pennies on the dollar and ends up somewhere else. If that’s the case he could have just taken a discount with Houston in the first place and allowed them to build a better team around him and Harden though. Dickhead to the end that guy is. Thanks for the memories Oracle!
