2017 Off Season Thread

We had a good offense, but this offense would be unstoppable if we had an offensive coordinator with more creativity and the ability to dissect any defense. Carr studies hard, has the tools and smarts to be elite. He has been reading defenses well for a long time. When you don't match that type of QB with that type of coordinator, you hold this down from its potential.

Watson will probably sign with us. It seems like Tice and Del Rio like him, and Watson has felt bad about not being able to live up to his contract and expectations. The good news is that he probably will get a salary cap friendly deal.

I am impressed with Cook and feel that he will not only be a good QB, but will give us a good draft pick in return. Sounds like he is of the same mindset as Derek and always wanting to get better. As second string, he will be showcased during preseason games and will be ready should Carr go down.

Dan Williams contract calls for $4.35 million salary in 2017 with no amortized bonus money. This means no dead cap money should we cut him... a savings of the full amount. I don't think he stays. It should be evident to Jack and Reggie, as it is to us, that a physical presence in the middle of the line will make the other 10 players better..much better. Someone who doesn't take conditioning seriously in the offseason, appears as lazy and ineffective during the season. I think Big Dan is gone.

I want to see us use draft picks, if the need arises to trade for restricted players. We are at the point of our development where waiting for someone from the draft to develop to use right away is counter productive. We can still draft for the future, but lets not pass up a blue chip player on the market simply because we 'don't want to give up a pick.

Agreed with those saying we can't stand pat on the assumption that injuries were our downfall. This division is going to be a battle for the next few years. Denver has plenty of cap space and KC/SD will have enough to make a power move.

Edit: KC has their own FAs to deal with but can make some cap moves that really won't hurt them too much.

Chargers were decimated by injuries last season. They have a nice nucleus of talent. Denver will probably go hard after Romo in the off season. KC will be there again.

Priority #1- Interior pass rush, it might be the worst in the NFL.. Kawaan Short would go a long way to improving that in FA

#2- MLB..- Jarrad Davis from Florida.. pick #24- 1st rd

#3 - SAM- Another position that is complete dogshit. Malcolm Smith simply isn't very good.. I'm sticking with the Nips special in OLB Steven Taylor from Houston in rd 2

I actually thought the D looked pretty good today when they blitzed.. so this tells me its a scheme thing... Getting Aldon Smith back is gonna really help this team.. We just gotta find someone that can get consistant pressure up the middle on this DL

NIPS, what do you think it would cost to get Kawaan Short? If we let Dan Williams go, would the difference be close to a wash? Del Rio's Jacksonville teams had John Henderson and Marcus Stroud for several years. He needs some strong DT's that can push the pocket and hold up against the run. I'm done with the soft fat guys that lack the strength to do either job effectively.

No, not close to a wash... DWilliams deal is for below average starter money ($4.35 mil). Would have to think that Short is going to command over $10-12 million a season on a multyear deal with over $20 mil guarantee up front.

Kwan Short is a top five DT, so he will get between Suh (top paid) and Liuget (no 5). Suh averages around $22 million/year and Liuget averages around $10 million.

The franchise tag will be around $14 million.

As an opinion, I think Short will average $15-16 million.

There is some speculation that Maclin will be a cap casualty... might be able to pick him up for a reasonable price if that happens.

The offseason....

In reality, players and coaches are evolving. Players are getting bigger, stronger, and faster. We have to remember to stay ahead of the curve.

The same can be said of coordinators and coaches. Coordinators are getting wiser and more creative. Part of it from players evolving adding different wrinkles, and part because the older coaches/coordinators don't have their minds polluted with old ways they experienced in the past. We need coordinators with fresh minds.

Basically, our defense coordinator can be outcoached by an unemployed chimp. The same can almost be said about Musgrave, except Carr does a good job of masking Musgraves mistakes.

Seems like we are on schedule. I trust the necessary steps will be taken to move us into step four...

JF, where do you think Dontari Poe slots in money wise? Seems like KC may have a little bit of a problem on their hands with paying Berry and Poe (although they can clear some serious cap space by dropping a few contracts (e.g., Foles and Charles). Is Poe someone you'd have any interest in? What about Hankins in NY?
