The Arizona Cardinals couldn’t overcome a slow start and ultimately fell to the visiting Oakland Raiders, 33-26, on Thursday night.

Final Score

Oakland Raiders 33, Arizona Cardinals 26

OAKLAND RAIDERS
Johnathan Hankins stood out with some good plays against the run. But the real stories of the night were Benson Mayowa and Maurice Hurst‘s big games. Mayowa wrecked havoc all night against Arizona right tackle Korey Cunningham, and Hurst was an offense’s worst nightmare wherever he lined up.

Fellow defensive lineman Ethan Westbrooks, a favorite of Jon Gruden’s in camp, turned in a solid performance in run defense against the Cardinals’ offensive line. The veteran 6-foot-4, 287-pounder didn’t offer much as a pass-rusher, but his run defense was strong.

OAKLAND RAIDERS
Oakland’s secondary collectively was not very good Thursday night, which was the case last season as well. There were too many big plays allowed, including the 40-yard and 59-yard touchdowns previously mentioned.

The worst of the Raiders’ secondary was none other than Nevin Lawson. He struggled against Arizona’s speedy wideouts and was called for a penalty in the contest, as well.

Others shined more than . . .

Marcell Ateman, Hunter Renfrow
There’s a tough battle going on at wide receiver for the Raiders. One is at slot receiver and the other is for a roster spot. Renfrow seemed to have the edge in the battle in camp, but through two preseason games, Ryan Grant has caught up and now looks to be pulling away. He caught the touchdown pass from Carr to end the opening drive. Renfrow came in later and finished with two catches for 26 yards — his first of the preseason.

Ateman is fighting for a roster spot. His main competition has been JJ Nelson and Keelan Doss. Nelson has been outstanding in camp and added a big catch last week. After Doss scored a touchdown on his first catch last week, the undrafted rookie caught five passes on five targets for 38 yards tonight. Ateman had one catch on one target for 14 yards after posting one catch on one target for 19 yards last week.

You thought those penalties were accidental??

Clelin Upshaw?

Hey, @Mach!

My grandmother could've completed that pass to Darren Waller in the endzone...and she's been dead for 61 years.

G.

She's a spry one, eh? She single?

Hurst really sniffed out the screen

Not possible.

If renfrow would of swung around Rico that would of been first down and more

Would have*

Benson Mayowa has been in providing pressure all day. I think our nascar package should be Mayowa/Clelin/Hankins/Key

Great plan. Taking Mo Hurst off the field should be great for the passrush.

You don't have a 350 lb 1-tech in a Nascar package. The whole point is to put 4 DEs out there.

im sorry but pj hall looks like shit against 4th stringers smh....
He's the one I'm most disappointed with tonight. He should be a solid rotational guy, I know he was drafted too high, but come on. I'd rather keep Vanderdoes after watching Hall last night.

Taking a QB before the 15th round is for newbs...
My league is 6pts for a passing TD and -3 for an INT and I've honestly had stacked rosters before get fucked over by a mediocre QB so I try to avoid that shit on my teams now.

My boy Josh Jacobs looked the part. Not a whole lot to go off of but he's a smooth runner. He might not be a flashy back but we're going to love all the things he can do for an offense.

My boy Clelin Ferrell had more bad than good last night. You can just tell mentally he's spinning out there. Physically I thought he looked better. I want to see a replay of his 2nd penalty because live I thought he was whooping the guys ass and it was the OL going high. I didn't expect him to be some stud right out of the gate so he needs to keep getting better every week and let Buckner work his magic. First season expectations are 5-6 sacks and solid against the run.

Abram is a guy I love watching on the field. He's always around the ball in the run game. Hopefully he shows up that way in the pass game.

AJ Cole had a nice game. Pretty obvious he was the better player. Giants picked up Townsend BTW.

I just have a feeling we're keeping 3 QBs and 4 RBs plus Ingold.

For the most part our rookies and FA pickups have been pretty solid through two preseason games.

I'm still sticking with my prediction of 7-9 this year with the arrow pointing upward for 2020-2021.

How we dominated the Cards in the first half... that's what I want against the Broncos. New coach, new QB... start out hot and get them on the run.

Buckner and the defensive line guys were right in front of us all game. Buckner never stops teaching, all game long.

Abrams does not look like a rookie on the sidelines. He 100% looks like he belongs there, had the swag of a veteran.

I think Clelin is pressing and overthinking things. Lot of pressure on him to perform being taken so high. Khalil didn’t exactly light it up when he first came into the league either.

Kid has a good head on his shoulders and a great DL coach in Buckner. He will figure it out.
