Me not being unsupervised wasn’t actually a good thing. We went from doing things I’m surprised to didn’t kill us to doing things I’m surprised didn’t kill us or land us in jail. Part of that was that my grandparents were just too old and out of touch to keep up with a young kid at that point. My wife and I always kept our kids in sports and other stuff but in hindsight they probably missed out on the go find your own entertainment experience. Probably bad and good in different aspects. The technology though, you guys are lying to yourselves if you think you wouldn’t be all over that if was around when you were a kid.

Technology was around. I used to go to friends house's and they'd be playing Atari, Intellivision, etc (I'm dating myself). I wasn't much interested and glad I wasn't. Just me though....

We had the same thing. I got the 1st Atari and my buddy got the 1st ColecoVission ! The two coolest kids on the block, and every blue moon if it was especially cold or raining we actually got to play them.

I think our parents had a plan to rotate the kids on those crappy days so we wouldn't just sit inside and drive our parents nuts. Reality is we rarely ever got to just sit around playing games, we had to play outside. I can't blame our parents 6 seven year olds all in a house going nuts would drive me nuts too.

The problem is in a lot of communities it's actually against the law to leave a child 7-10 years old unaccompanied by an adult just playing around in your neighborhood. People will call DCF on you if you send the kids out to just ride bikes and play in a community park without adult supervision. When I was a kid, I was out riding my bike going 2 or 3 neighborhoods over playing with my friends in the woods, streets, doing normal boy shit. Nowadays that shit will get DCF called on your ass.

I'm sure that depends on where you live, but here in Orlando you let an 8 year old go out in the damn yard without adult supervision you are asking for trouble.
And I doubt it was the 10 year olds that got that law in force... it was the adults. All I'm saying is blame the right people haha.

I kind of never liked putting quarters into video games because there was no chance to win another game. However we did play NBA Jams and Mario Brothers quite a bit. I could play Space Invaders on Atari until it turned over to 0 again.

Life was rad as fuck in the 80’s. I lived in a big neighborhood with a bunch of kids. There was always a parent at someone’s house so we were kind of left to our own devices. Start the day off with a game of football, followed by braking into storage lockers to find titty magazines, then bike riding, followed by a some NES or Sega time, then back out to go swimming in one of our pools, back inside to watch Poltergeist or Jaws 3 on HBO, and finally end the day having crab apple fights. Good shit.

Crab Apple fights were the best.
