On Derek Carr, raiders 2018 draft picks, young building blocks and more.

This below is fair..from Yahoo Sports

Derek Carr was left for dead early last season when he started slow (in a new offense, with a bad supporting cast), and then nobody seemed to notice when he played pretty well. Over a 10-game stretch from mid-October through Week 16, Carr had that 12-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a passer rating just shy of 100. That doesn’t mean Carr was great and is absolutely the Raiders quarterback of the future, but it wasn’t bad.

Carr deserved another look in 2019. How he plays will determine whether the Raiders keep him around beyond that. And if Carr struggles, the Raiders will likely be in a position to draft one of the top quarterbacks in a strong 2020 class.

My son just said we need to con the browns into a straight up baker for Carr trade.

I told him I wanted what he was on, although a great idea in theory

If Carr can duplicate his second half from last season we should at least stay in games this year but the big thing will be how he plays in the first half. Going 5-10 for 60 yards and 0 TDs and 0 INTs but we're down 14-0 at half isn't going to get it done. He needs to get things going early AND we need the guys around him to step it up. I'm still worried this defense is going to be garbage even if Carr and the offense light it up all year long.

You just wrote a term paper to say that the players around him suck and that he dumps off because he’s scared of getting sacked? I respect the effort man but that’s not exactly new information.

You ain't seen a term paper from me. :diablo:

It still depends on how Carr plays even in the wins.
If they win 8 games but should of won 11 but for Carr fucking up and throwing interceptions and turtling, then that's a factor in saying bye-bye to Derek.
The same goes for the other win scenarios.
The assumption is the fewer wins must mean Carr is injured or the defense sucks.
What if they win 8 games but Carr was meh and the defense played great?

Point is Carr's performances are still going to be scrutinized even in the wins.

You asked "What if they win 8 games but Carr was meh and the defense played great?"

Carr had an outstanding season in 2016. The D hasn't been out of the bottom third in a decade-plus.

Might as well ask what if they win 8 games and Carr is meh but AB is happy with 70 targets.

If the defense even hits 20th overall I'd consider that a huge win with how young our talent is there. There's a dozen 'ifs' on that side of the ball and we need the majority of them to hit if we're going to put together an adequate defense.

A baker’s dozen “ifs” on D:
  1. If Conley can stay healthy
  2. If Worley or Mullen, opposite Conley, can play above average NFL football
  3. If Joseph can play like a 1st round pick
  4. If Abram can play like a 1st round pick
  5. If Joseph and Abram can play like 1st round picks together
  6. If Ferrell can play like a 1st round pick
  7. If Key and Mayowa, opposite Ferrell, can play above average NFL football.
  8. If Hurst can play at an All Pro level
  9. If PJ Hall can play above average NFL football
  10. If Hankins and/or Jelly can play above average NFL football
  11. If in Marshall and/or Morrow we finally have above average coverage at LB
  12. If Burfict, Whitehead, Lee, and/or Cabinda/Coney give us two above average LB when on the field
  13. If Conley, Joyner, Ferrell, Hurst and Key can consistently play at a high level on passing downs.

Carr had an outstanding season in 2016.

It was overrated.

He was just 16th in TQBR.
Middle of the pack NFL starter that year.

7.0 yds per attempt.
Below average.

70 rushing yds.
lol

28 TD passes
Pretty good, but certainly very far from outstanding.

No division title.
Zero playoff wins.

That is the high water mark for David and it isn't anything to get erect over.

But what about all his 4th quarter comebacks against non playoff teams that season?

Really not worries about this one.

Not too worried about this. The Raiders were #7 in points and #6 in rushing TDs that year. Murray was great in red zone that year and took plenty of the scoring opportunities.

No division title.
Zero playoff wins.
The Raiders lost the division when the renowned tandem of McGloin/Cook took on the stout Denver defense. This is the team that Carr and the Oline and picked apart 2 months earlier.

And again, Carr didn't get a playoff win that year because he had a literal broken leg.

That is the high water mark for David and it isn't anything to get erect over.
I'll agree with this. And the more damning evidence is the terribly ineffective first halves from Carr throughout that year.

Many of your supporting points are valid, some are completely irrelevant (ie no playoff wins in 2016). The overall premise is accurate. The 2016 season represents a high water mark for Carr, and seen in the context of the rest of his career it is a middle-of-the-road performance and nothing to get excited about. If Carr duplicates his 2016 performance in 2019 we are likely to see him back in 2020, but I would question the value of paying a QB like that $25mill due to the incredible strain on the cap and necessity to field 23 high quality players at every other position. QBs who make that much money should be reasonably expected to overcome at least *some* roster shortcomings. I don't believe Carr can do that.
