Defensive End/ Edge Thread

What if the scheme and coaching sucks? Wouldn’t the coaches be the wrong people to lean on?

How about we just draft good players and work the scheme around higher talent...
The problem with this organization is that *they have no plan*.

Until proven otherwise they just shoot from the hip completely disregarding the type of players they are looking for because they don't know what they're looking for. Again, no plan.

Yes, draft good players but if they're drafting players that completely go against the coaches concepts then they're just trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. But then, that's how they roll and that's why they're terrible year after year.

Maybe it changes with the Gruden/Mayock team but we'll just have to see. I have my doubts.

Go Browns!!! Give me some reason to watch the NFL in 2019.

Because we’re the Raiders. H/W/S Baby!

Joe Jackson looks like MEJ part II.. seems to stack well but the dude is slow as fuck.. seems to half ass it at times... taking this MF'er off my list.. seen enough of his ass to pass

He bulked up way too much from last year and lost his explosion. If you watch his tape from 2017 he's a much better prospect. Kid needs to trim back down a bit.

I agree @NIPS

His get off looked worse than Nelson/Ferguson and the other day two pass rushers.

I came away pretty unimpressed. He was easy for me to put in the 3rd/4th round “meh he’s ok” pile.

He reminded me of Preston Smith when I watched him. “Meh, he’s ok” is probably fairly accurate. Might be a cantidate in round 3-4 if he’s still around because or DE depth chart is horrific lol.

I was all in on Preston in round 2.

#Iowa edge rusher Anthony Nelson has some great size at 6-foot-7, 275 pounds, but does he have the game to match?
@TampaBayTre gives you the pros and cons of Nelson's NFL outlook.
https://t.co/QrwU4Ir5xs

Reading this, I see that Nelson gets nit picked on for the PSU game, Mississippi State , and Senior Bowl

His stats for PSU

5 tackles 4 solo 1.5 sacks and an additional QB hurry

His stats for Mississippi State
4 tackles 3 solo 2.5 TFL and a PD that directly led to a TO. Check out the sequence in the video he had on a 3 down goalline defense sequence

Senior Bowl rotating in and out had a Strip Sack

Consistency as I said, but article cherry picked to make a point. I find the functional strength thing quite funny. 51 the RT for Mississippi State was awesome in the outback bowl. He contained Nelson quite well, if you look at the game footage though. MSU last play on 4th down. Nelson ragdolls Reese into the QB Fitzgerald.

I don’t know Hawkeye, seen him get constantly pushed back in those clips. Don’t see much strength at the point of attack.

I agree to some extent but that's not a strength thing. He's a 6'7 DE . That's a leverage situation. There's a reason he's probably a 3rd rounder. I just think the reasoning in the article is flawed. I can't agree with it. His rush move is a bull rush and he's productive at it. Ive heard plenty of times of an Iowa prospect lacking speed or agility, when was the last time they were considered lacking strength?

Not a good write-up on Nelson....

My overall thought and final conclusion on Nelson can sort of be told in the random clip above: I can’t trust him.

Nelson has the ideal length to be a problem as an edge player, but he doesn’t have the athletic ability, both with speed or strength, to be a consistent difference maker. Carl Nassib was a similar build at 6-foot-7, 277 pounds when he was rolling through the NFL draft in 2015. Nassib got drafted in the third round, but Nassib was better than Nelson in every way.

It’s hard for me to envision Nelson having consistent success in the NFL when his game is not only so vanilla but also sub-par. Guys like that just do not last long in the NFL. Nelson will definitely be proving me wrong if he is an exception from what I concluded with his college tape.
