Welcome to the team Gareon Conley

He passed the Raiders polygraph. The fact that we're giving players polygraph tests is f/cking awesome. I like this pick.

Wasn't us that polyed him. But I don't doubt we talked to who did.

As a redshirt freshman, Conley stepped into the starting lineup against Michigan State for an injured Eli Apple. He did not fare well against the Spartans' strong passing game that day, forcing an injured Apple back onto the field. Over the past two years, however, Conley has started every game for the Buckeyes. He was an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick in 2015 (two interceptions, five pass breakups) and then graduated to second-team all-conference as a junior (four INTs, eight PBU).

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Has NFL size with above-average length. Plays long. At his best when playing with inside leverage and trapping receivers against the boundary. Shades receivers with a basketball stance -- wide base, bent knees and wide arms. Creates challenging throwing lanes to target. Allowed just 37 percent completion rate. Press-man talent with zone instincts. Shows discipline and technique on verticals and curls. Matches with his feet rather than grabbing. Senses when his pattern is designed to clear space for another receiver and reacts accordingly. Has plus burst to the throw. Uses length to play around receiver and bat passes down underneath without interfering. Runs well and sinks into receiver's lap down the field, getting his head around to make a play on the ball. Plays the ball with soft hands and outstanding timing.
WEAKNESSES
Can be a little tight-hipped in his transitions. Pattern-match was just average when facing off against more advanced route trees. Michigan receivers created separation and some panic in Conley with their inside releases and crossing routes. Got caught reaching and holding in attempt to recover. Will occasionally default to face-guarding rather than turning to find ball. Can be slow to digest route combinations and lose track of his man. Doesn’t look as comfortable or confident in off-man. Plays small in run support and needs to work on consistency as a tackler. Gets driven off his spot by blocking receivers and rarely charges forward to attack near the line of scrimmage.
DRAFT PROJECTION
Round 1
SOURCES TELL US
"He's not as good as the other cornerback (Marshon Lattimore), but he's a good corner. If he measures over 6-foot and runs in the low 4.4s he will come off the board on Thursday night." -- North area scout for NFC team

BOTTOM LINE
Press-corner with experience at both cornerback spots and an ability to fit into a variety of coverage techniques. He plays with good top-end speed and has the ball skills to challenge and defend passes on any level. He can step in right away in zone coverage, but could struggle to match patterns from a pedal. He will likely be targeted by teams seeking long cornerbacks who can crowd and trail receivers down the field. He has the talent to become an early starter, but he must improve in run support.-Lance Zierlein

Conley was a good not great pick, besides the obvious.

We replaced our biggest weakness with a strength.

It's a win except for the rape thing.

We replaced our biggest weakness with a strength.

It's a win except for the rape thing.

A pretty big thing.

Its a dumb risk like every year of Reggie's tenure.

Hayden has a heart transplant, Menelik plays soccer, blah blah.

Dude should just pay attention and quit trying to hit home runs. Take the odd double.

Conley...

Clearly studies tape and transfers it to the field. Frequently seen getting other DBs lined up and making pre-snap alerts. Can be a quarter-count late reading receiver's routes. Struggled versus Michigan receivers, which run a pro route tree. Zone awareness is adequate but can improve. Inconsistent diagnosing route combinations. Good awareness when ball is in the air.
Cover Skills 2 Very good combination of height, length (33" arms) and straight-line speed (4.46 40-yard dash at combine). Quick feet and closes quickly. Experience playing outside (both sides) and in the slot. Doesn't give up many yards after catch. Has some tightness in hips. Will give up some separation when forced to change directions quickly in short area or when forced to flip hips and run versus faster WRs. Got beat deep twice versus Ohio State but bailed out both times. Clutches and grabs when in trouble.

Ball Skills 2 Very good ball skills. Shows ability to high point the ball. Gets head around in time and can quickly locate. Had a big time INT versus Clemson WR Mike Williams early in the semi-final game.

Run Support 2 Aggressively fills when in position to do so. Typically does a good job with contain. Solid wrap-up tackler. Has above average strength for the position but does get stuck on blocks too long at times. Gives good chase in pursuit.

So... Smith to SS, Kujo to FS, Amerson and Conley outside?

id flip flop smith and kujo. Let smith be the FS. that said let the 3 CBs fight to earn their roles. I think Amerson is our nickel.

How is lack of pass rush not the biggest weakness? Weren't we last in the league despite having the DPOY?

It's a huge risk. But it just seems out of character for Red to take a rapist for fucks sakes.

I have to believe Mark signed off on this.

Otherwise, if this goes sideways it could be Red's bus ticket out of town.
i guarantee that homework was done. I've heard there is video of that night where nothing went on between the accuser and conley. I would have mocked him in the late first/2nd after hearing it. Only reason we got him was hesitance based on allegations.

there have been no charges brought up nor has he even been listed as a "person of interest". Its a horrible allegation but the timing of it was... off. I'm going to side with Conley until facts come against him. Right now its purely an accusation.
