The Not Too Early 2016 Draft Thread

Karl Joseph is an option in second round. I don't Reg will take a risk due to his injury unless he can be tested before draft

43. West Virginia S Karl Joseph
5-10, 205 pounds

Key stat: Had only one interception in All-Big 12 junior season but had FBS-best five through four games as a senior when he suffered season-ending knee injury.

The skinny: A ferocious hitter with a nose for the ball, Joseph is on the road to rehab after his torn ACL ended his final season with the Mountaineers prematurely. He was invited to the NFL scouting combine, where he interviewed and was tested medically, and the reports appear to be mostly good at this point.

Expect Joseph to be back in Indianapolis for the April medical recheck, and from there teams will have a good idea where this fearless missile of a hitter is and how quickly he can return to the field. West Virginia's pro day is April 4, but it's doubtful Joseph will be able to do much more there than cheer on his teammates in front of NFL scouts.

Best-suited destination: Safety play has changed over the past decade with the league's offenses tending to be more pass reliant, and so the need on defense has demanded that safeties cover and cover a lot of ground. When healthy, Joseph flashed very good closing speed and also the ability to play high and low. So assuming he hasn't lost much with the knee injury, he'd be best served going to a defense that will use those skills appropriately and not just ask him to play deep halves strictly. Joseph also could be the rare rookie who steps in his first season and sets a tone with his attitude, work ethic and leadership. The West Virginia staff has raved about his intangibles.

Scouting hot take: “At worst he'd be a demon on [special] teams, but I think he can start in our league. We think he's on the Todd Gurley [injury] timetable, so back full around September. You can live with that.” — NFC scouting director

Sounds like he'll be available after Rd2. Sweet.

I had no idea that Nkethiopian fell out of a window.

I don't think him moving to Oakland is a good decision on Reggie's part.

I guess Green Bay may be a good landing spot, but he'll probably get drunk and freeze to death in his backyard.

I've noticed mock drafts where he's chosen in round three, but I've also seen some where he sneaks into round one.

Mayock has him as the best safety outside of Ramsey.

I've seen the same.

I think it's entirely likely that he's the best safety prospect of this class. The competition is getting routinely ripped to shreds, which helps.

But, if he's not going to be ready for camp, I'd say it's at least equally likely teams lay back a bit and try to get him later...or focus on guys with two intact knees.

He may well be on the Todd Gurley recovery schedule, but no one is going to put him on Gurley's level as a prospect, so I'm comfortable saying Rd1 just isn't in the cards for him unless he's farther ahead in his recovery than reported.

Even with a conservative recovery schedule he should be fully recovered by the start of the season.

Just don't think we are in a position to red shirt someone with all the needs we have unless someone like Jaylon Smith falls to the second. I heard Jackson may not be ready until Sep't which means he will miss all the OTA's and camp.

A whole lot easier for a RB to come in at the start of the season with out TC, and preseason. At least for a rookie. If we had another viable safety that we felt comfortable with that would be another story.

I am kind of pissed that we are going into the draft needing desperately to fill the Safety position. We seem to be headed for Carrie and Allen as our safeties as of now. I don't think that will be the best match up in our division. Need someone to hit somebody.

Head scratcher here. I guess they don't think safety is that big of a need. TJ is not a safety

They have to be in love with someone in the draft. Because we have been trying to get a S since last year. Swung and missed on Weddle, probably low balled the two in AZ. I'm thinking they have their eye on a prospect.

Well all the top safeties are in reach so just a question if we stay put at 14 or move down and stockpile another second.

Yeah it wouldn't be the worst thing to do. Especially if Hargraves, or Treadwell or someone like that fell.

NFL Draft rumors: Notre Dame's Ronnie Stanley's stock falling amid work ethic concerns?

Notre Dame holds its Pro Day Thursday in South Bend, Ind. and offensive tackleRonnie Stanley will need a strong showing to change the opinion of some scouts ahead of next month's NFL Draft.

While some analysts believe Stanley is the second best offensive tackle in this year's draft class behind only Mississippi product Laremy Tunsil, there are scouts and NFL insiders who believe the Golden Domer could be a candidate to slide down the draft board.

"There are a lot of questions on his mental toughness and work ethic," A former NFC personnel director told NJ Advance Media on the condition of anonymity. "He's a very gifted athlete, but has only average strength."

Stanley, 6-foot-5 and 304 pounds started every game for the Fighting Irish last season en-route to being named a consensus All-American. However, in the run up to the NFL Draft, Stanley will have to prove himself once again at his Pro Day in the eyes of some talent evaluators, including the Eagles who have been linked to him in recent mock drafts.

"He didn't lift at the Combine and said last week he thought he would do 20 reps at his Pro Day," the source said. "That's awful for an elite offensive lineman. He has to really come out and work hard at his Pro Day.

"His task is to erase some doubts. He has huge upside but also huge downside. Stanley has the natural tools to be great, but there is a big 'if' involved with him. That means there is also a huge bust factor teams need to consider."

Stanley has heard the criticism emanating from NFL circles and says he hopes to put them to rest before the draft gets underway in Chicago on April 28.

"I've just heard many different things that people think I'm just a laid back guy that just relies on his talent, doesn't really love the game like he should," Stanley said. "I'm really trying to show those people what football means to me – not necessarily those people, but the teams."
