Draft Grades

Fify

BTW, when (a) Ferrell confirms that he’s better than Gary, Burns and Sweat, and as good as Allen, (b) Jacobs has back-to-back offense altering seasons and (c) Abram lives up to his late 1st round billing, I’ve got a big Fuck You Josh coming.
If Ferrell works out and Jacobs continues to ball out I won't shut up about it. #5 and #11 prospects for me pre-draft. Call me Mr. Big Freak.

Im praying homie!

Abram and Ferrell just balling as 10 year pro bowlers!

Jacobs is just a stud who I liked from the start. He don’t count.

I'm still questionable on Abram. Didn't like the pick when it was made* and still wonder if he can say healthy. I do think the guy can be pretty solid though if he doesn't keep getting hurt.

*Had Tillery (@Sleet) in the 'put your money' thread and Chargers fans are pretty disappointed in his rookie year.

I think the actual SS position is a dinosaur relic of the past but I want Abram to succeed and prove me wrong.

DBs need to cover first nowadays. Teams pass 60 percent of the time. You can’t hit anyone can’t touch any receivers.

That was my biggest concern when we drafted him. Reminded me too much of Joseph. And his shoulder and style of play is obviously an issue. I actually liked what I saw from the dude against the Broncos and I love the mentality he brings to a defense... but he has major question marks. Just hope he balls out and puts my questions to rest.

He's actually pretty slight for a big hitter too. Kujo might actually be better built.

TheHuddleReport has an archive of every player profiled since 2004, which includes about 100 prospects per year. In ‘20, Boylhart profiled 101 prospects. Boylhart’s record is easy to look up (see link below).

Below is Boylhart’s talent rankings of players Mayock drafted in ‘19 and ‘20 plus one UDFA (Boylhart’s talent rankings are not where he thinks a player will be drafted but the talent level he sees/projects once developed):
  • 1.33 Ferrell
  • 1.34 Jacobs
  • 1.47 Arnette
  • 1.47 Edwards
  • 1.92 Muse
  • 2.06 Ruggs
  • 2.83 Johnson
  • 3.11 Crosby
  • 3.17 Mullen
  • 3.56 Mariner
  • 3.67 Abram
Boylhart only provided grades by round in ‘18; here is what he thought of players Gruden drafted:
  • 1st Hurst
  • 1st Ateman
  • 2nd Miller
  • 2nd Key
  • 2nd Parker
  • 3rd Hall
Mayock, Gruden and Boylhart appear to view prospects similarly.

Reece & Big Link draft recap

A collage of draft reviews — mostly loving Mayock’s picks but a few who hated.

Guy likes Ruggs and Arnette and the Raiders as a sleeper pick.

Lions’ video guy’s Raiders’ draft review: B+

NFL.com’s draft recap, which ranks Minn 3rd and Miami 7th, had these kind things to say about them drafting CB in the 1st round:
  • The Vikings' first three selections could very well produce three Day 1 starters. Jefferson replaces Stefon Diggs opposite Adam Thielen in the receiving corps, while Gladney . . . will hit the starting lineup following the departures of Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes. . . .

  • Igbinoghene went earlier than many expected them to, but . . . Miami might have . . . a tough, competitive, physical nickel back -- you need to be good at those spots to win in today's NFL. We're not here to strongly dock the Fins for those decisions, even if a case can be made that they were reaches. The Igbinoghene pick foreshadowed the Dolphins' theme for Day 2 of the draft, as the master plan of adding tough, physical, powerful talent was fully revealed with the selections of Hunt, Davis and Jones.
Similarly, NFL.com, which ranked Mayock’s draft #20, had this to say about Arnette:

PARR: Ruggs might not be the prototypical WR1 with size, but we're not sure how much that matters because he's fast enough to run past just about every defender he'll encounter, and it's lazy to suggest he's simply a deep threat. We have no issue with Vegas rolling the dice on him even with Jerry Jeudy and CeeDee Lamb still on the board. Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden filled their biggest need with the pick and now Derek Carr has no excuse for failing to throw the ball downfield. And credit to the decision makers for not stopping there when it came to upgrading the QB's supporting cast. A receiver turned quarterback for Kentucky last season, Bowden will start off as a running back for the Raiders, but it's a safe bet we'll see him lining up in the slot, too. He brings the type of edge this team covets. A foot injury kept Edwards from working out at the NFL Scouting Combine, but if his hands improve, he has the size and strength to become a nice complementary piece in this recharged receiving corps. NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein's player comp for him (former Bears first-round bust David Terrell) is terrifying, though. Now, Arnette at No. 19 was not as big of a reach as some are making it out to be, but it was still a little rich for my blood given that the second-best edge rusher in the draft (K'Lavon Chaisson) was still available, among other options that intrigued me more than the Ohio State corner. That said, corner was the team's biggest need other than receiver. We're very fond of the Robertson pick. The competitive streak runs strong in the undersized slot man who shouldn't be underestimated.

Didn’t previously see that Zierlein was down on Edwards. Sure hope he fits Carr’s game and flourishes. Parr, like most, is a big Amik fan.

The Terrell comp is weird. As a prospect he was a top level pick. As a pro he was injured and played with shit QBs. Not sure which version Zierlein is comparing him too but neither seems to fit.

Zierlein also had Edwards as a 3rd/4th round pick. And that's exactly where Edwards went.

I don't think this is someone you would rank in the 3rd or 4th round (Terrell's year by year numbers)

So which is it? Is Edwards a guy who will last 4 seasons and have 1 year over 415 yards receiving? Or is he a guy who is worth a 3rd or 4th round pick?
