2017 Free agents

Yah God forbid we waste a 5th round pick on a pro bowl/droty player. Yah probably wishful thinking but I know we kicked the tires on him last offseason.

im not saying he's not worth the price. I'm saying they arent giving him up for that price. Add on to that his contract (restructured) and its going to be an investment in a player who has had some off field issues. With that Jets DL slightly coming back to earth last season - there are reasons to hesitate.

I think Richardson gets moved for a 3rd. I don't think Reggie is a player for him at a 3rd round price.

He pissed hot for weed no? I don't think he has any other violations. Jets won't get a 3rd for him or they would have by now

Who knows what will happen on draft day. Perhaps the market for Richardson heats up after round 2? More likely after round 3 and the Jets accept the best offer.

I dont think Ward is a lost cause. He was known to be extremely raw and unrefined. We saw that. He was rated about as low as you can get, there is little chance he DOES NOT improve off last years disaster season. How can he be much worse?

Here is another unpopular opinion. S.Smith wasn't as bad as people say he was. Yes, I also watched him get torched early in the season. But he also had a bunch of very good games mixed in. I fully expect a bounce back season from our CBs if we can provide some actual pass rush.

If a team is last in sacks, its hard to fault the DBs more than the front 7 etc
I agree on Ward. One season does not make someone a bust or incapable of adapting. He was clearly in way way way over his head, but you're right, the reports were he was raw and that was obvious. He's a good athlete, but he was thinking on the field, and that's going to put you a step behind. He had to think through his transitions too, so he was often two or three steps behind. Ugh! Let's hope he can get some good reps in this off-season.

Still think he's a season or two away from being what they were hoping, and that puts him where? Yep, next contract territory. I don't think anyone likes paying a player during their growing phase: DJ Hayden, cough, cough.

Wasn't he rated the worst DL in the NFL last season or one of them? I don't see this guy contributing anytime soon. Just can't be wasting early draft picks on project guys.
It's okay to spend draft picks on projects if you don'tneed them to deliver in the first couple seasons. Our roster is not there yet.

Exactly. The Pats can get away with this, we can't. Red has no business trying to be cute with so many holes on the defensive side of the ball. Your 2nd and 3rd rounders should be contributing right away. The offense is in fairly good shape save for a power back and a third wideout.

I disagree. New England cannot get away with it, they let players walk when they want big contracts. They're filling holes every off-season.

But that's their strategy. They stockpile picks and pick players that should deliver immediately. They want more of them because even more polished college players fail to measure up at the NFL level. People just don't focus on the players they draft that don't stick.

They do it every year brah and they are obviously very good at it. They draft guys that fit their system

Yeah the snaps we wasted on worthless DTs has to be improved obviously. The only good thing is if you have a raw young player like that the best thing for him is experience. He now has seen plenty of action and should 100% be ready next year if his mind is right. Id love to hear about him working his ass off this offseason. Maybe he learned what he needs to work on. Likely just staying in the gym and keeping his pads low. I can only remember one good play last season haha. He had a good pressure than caused a turnover later in the play. One play tho. Haha

Show me the list of players they reach for.

What? When did I say that? I was referring to your comment about them letting players walk and replacing them with new players.

It's what I said. Teams with a complete roster can waste picks on developmental players. You said New England could. I said they don't, because they let players walk every year.

I don't think Calhoun was considered a reach where we took him, more of a value pick. Dude can't set the edge though that much was obvious so far. Have to wonder if he'll also benefit from pro off-season training and coaching.
He couldn't set the edge against college tackles either. He was a liability against the run. I thought maybe they were onto something when they switched him to linebacker until I seen him have to drop into coverage.

He has some agility but nothing else to go with it. He generated almost no pass rush.

I remember thinking that they brought in a bunch of potential edge rushers last off season. But when the dust settled at the end of training camp they didn't have anything to show for it.

Cowser and Calhoun. :raiderbag:

Yep. Saw a handful of marginal plays too. Other than that, usually going downfield backwards trying like mad not to.

Have to hope pride takes over this off-season.

Calhoun wasn't a set-the-edge kind of guy in college, he was a force/bounce/disrupt player. He forced the RB back inside and chased, made the RB bounce backward to get outside, and generally disrupted the play be beating the tackle to the spot, even if he ultimately got blocked. We don't ask our edge players to play like that.

I was shocked when we drafted him. I will support the guy to a degree while he is a Raiders. Glass half full: he has size, athleticism, DE/DT versatility (potentially) a good attitude & youth on his side. He just got a ton of snaps in the NFL for the first time. Im sure his head was swimming lining up next to K.Mack and having some of these VET OL treating him like a rookie bitch. Yes, some DT are ready for that, I never thought Ward was. He never should have played so much. We needed a DT and he got rushed into action. The entire defense has also stunk, so its hard to blame a rookie for adding to that mess. Im hoping he can play more limited and focused snaps next year at the DT spot. Would have been nice if Dan Williams showed up ready to play and made his job easier. That mofo better come in mid season for this year. Same with Walford / Gabe.
