The Not Too Early 2017 Draft Thread

Oakland Raiders: John Ross, WR, Washington

Giving the Raiders a receiver may seem odd because they have Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree. However, they have one of the worst slot receivers in the NFL in Seth Roberts, who dropped countless passes this past season. Oakland needs to be better in that regard, and John Ross, one of the better prospects available, happens to project as a dynamic slot receiver

Not my choice really but...

Yes indeed...

Biggest draft need: A thumping but athletic middle/inside linebacker. After Ben Heeney struggled early and then went on injured reserve and rookie Cory James was miscast, Perry Riley Jr. was signed off the street and settled things down. Still, the Raiders need someone who can solidify the middle of their defense for the long haul. Can they find one in the 20s in the first round of the draft?

Yes, his name is Jarrad Davis

Washington redshirt junior WR John Ross' injury history includes a meniscus tear in his right knee in 2014 followed by microfracture surgery.

Before the surgery, Ross played out the remainder of the season, from game three to the year's conclusion. "But I was worried if I said something, I probably would have to sit out for the rest of the season." Then Ross tore the ACL and meniscus in his left knee during spring practice, leading to a redshirt year in 2015. Ross took college football by storm this year, recording 1,150 yards and 17 touchdowns on 81 catches. It was easily his best season, which makes sense when considering he played with a torn meniscus in 2014, his last season on the field. Ross recently declared for the draft. It will be worth monitoring his medicals during the draft process. Jan 4 - 8:36 AM

Welp. I'll hear no more about this guy.

Wasn't pimping him. Just thought the comments were funny. I like the kid from Baylor again.

Washington junior CB Sidney Jones will forego his final season of collegiate eligibility to enter the 2017 NFL Draft.

Hat tip to Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline, who reported all the way back in October that Jones was a likely draft entrant. At the time, the analyst wrote that the 6-foot, 180-pounder was "developing into a true shutdown corner" and predicted a mid-first round selection for the Huskies standout. "Most impressively," wrote NFL Media's Bucky Brooks early in the season, "he is an alpha dog on the edge, exhibiting a feistiness that will make him an ideal CB1 prospect to play against big-bodied receivers on the edges." I think we can all agree that DT, Slot WR, LB and RT are the positions where we have guys that should not be starting. About in that order. Perry Riley IMO buys us a year or so. RT if we keep Howard/Crumpets for CHEAP and keep grooming our three young OL guys is fairly solid considering the rest of the league.....But, who at DT is worth drafting for what we need? I haven't seen any really good ones this year.....

Not within reach at least. At least a pass rushing DT.

Allen is the dream but he'll go top 10 - we have no shot there unless he massively fucks up.

McDowell out of Mich State is a guy that "could" drop to us but again - isnt likely. He's a strong top 20 pick.

Brantley out of Florida doesn't have the pedigree or stats of the other 2 but should be a "really good player" as a 3-tech on the next level. He should be there for us.

Wormley out of Michigan is a DT/DE hybrid type that we already have a few of in McGee/Autry/Edwards. Should be a solid Pro as a 3-4 end.

Everyone else is a 2nd round + target at this point.

Brantley "could" bulk a bit and be our big boy NT that gets some push. The others are more pure 3-techs or 5-tech hybrids.

but as i mentioned in the other thread - the value of the first 2 rounds is in this DB class. It's huge and deep. If we want to find a Reggie Nelson replacement - this would be the time. Same for a Nickel CB.

My early man-crush is Jake Butt. Dude reminds me of Zach Miller and getting a reliable TE could do wonders for the whole offense. I felt the same about the RB position last year and adding Richard/Washington took our offense to the next level. I'd take him as early as our 2nd round pick even with his knee injury.

I'm probably off the early RB train since the ones I like will be gone before we pick in the 1st. Re-sign Murray on a team friendly deal or look for a replacement in FA or later in the draft. Need to load up on coverage LBs, safeties, corners, and interior pass rushers this offseason. On offense need a developmental tackle and I'm fine with looking for Roberts replacement.
