5 Reggie Mackenzie draft myths:

Without question. And why wouldn't it? We were drafting 14th not 4th or 5th.
Said that in another post; Red pulled his weight picking 14th. At that spot, a "B" grade is the job he's supposed to do. At 4th and 5th, you certainly hope for an "A" grade.

I think anyone doing one of those 7rd mock drafts soon discovered how difficult it is drafting lower in the round. Your hands get tied really early. And this draft was pretty tough too. Only a few positions with quality depth, and not in our need areas. If you tried to match need, you reached a long way out. It was not pretty.

Well gentlemen, 4 drafts (3.5) have come and gone, I think we can fully put some myths to bed about how our GM drafts.

I had initially thought there were some tendencies we could track down like certain teams (Seattle with length/metrics) Minnesota and Cincy with H-W-S, other teams only drafting captains or certain schools heavy.

1) Reggie brings in the players he is interested in.
-Clearly this one is blown to hell. Nobody we had heard about this year was picked. I had a bead on almost all our visits. I am confident saying I knew at least 20 of our 30 visits plus all of our pro days and personal campus workouts.
Amari last year, Edwards this year. Karl Joseph had only spoken to our team once at the combine. Jihad said we barely talked. Khalil and Gabe did not come in for a visit in their draft year.

Reggie uses tape and scouts to set his board and the visits are obviously used to double check certain things.

On the flip side, a GM like Gettlemen draft 5 guys he brought in for visits (3 cb's out of 5)

2) Reggie only drafts religious players/or older players etc.
-By just assuming this, you obviously are not paying attention. Reggie has taken young kids like Amari and Edwards. He took the youngest player in the draft last year in Max Valles. Clearly AGE is not a factor. I assume he has some religious players mixed in with guys who don't give a shit. Long story short: Nothing to see here. No pattern at all. Among all the old players he has taken, there is an equally as young player somewhere along the line. Over 3.5 drafts he has taken the oldest prospects at a position (Crawford/Bergy/Menelik) and the youngest (Amari/Valles/MEJ)

3) Reggie stays away from X position in Y round.
-Nope. He will draft pass rushers early, WR's early, lineman anytime he wants. Again there is nothing here like other teams that we can get a read on. Some teams always take a lineman (GB) some teams always take developmental corners or QB's. We are all over the map. Pass rusher heavy? Sure. But outside of that we have gotten an OL every year. (Vadal/Feliciano/Bergy/Gabe). About all we can count on is we will likely use one pick on an OL. Add us to the same list as 28 other teams every year...

4) Reggie steers clear of character issues.
-Well, Connor Cook, Jon Dowling, Mario Edwards, Stacey McGee, Shelby Harris and others disagree. If the reward outweighs the risk, Reggie will pull the trigger regardless of what type of issue a guy has...

5) We like to take injured players.
-This one is probably the closest one to not being a 'myth' but I think its more happenstance and trusting his board. Sure Ball, Hayden, Karl Joseph, Watson and others have had injury history. (Carrie and Debose etc. as well) but there is not any pattern here. If anything they trust their doctors and minimize injury history on draft day.

3 years of excel spreadsheets with forty times, SPARQ scores, positions, conferences and H-W-S and there is nothing we can find out except: WE DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT WHAT REGGIE WILL DO

Anyone have any other myths we hear about?

I think the myths need some amendment.

2) To me Reggie doesn't care about age. He is not afraid of taking older prospects and as you have pointed out he is not afraid of taking very young prospects either.

4) He does seem to value high football character and team captains (who doesn't I guess), but again he is not afraid to roll the dice on a guy with character issues.

5) I would say short term injuries don't phase him. As long suffering fans we are entitled to think short term and want things turned around immediately. He is a long term thinker which is what a GM he should be.

None of these change your point about WE DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT WHAT REGGIE WILL DO.

WE DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT WHAT REGGIE WILL DO.
Given that well taken point, the "draft contest" needs a couple of things:

1) A new Name
2) A complete revamped set of rules and expectations for somebody to win

@007 ... figure it out, eh?

Perhaps this rule change would make a difference: A window after Day 1 and Day 2 to reset your board.

I would say Reggie leans towards high character guys. Didnt someone pound the table for Mario Edwards Jr saying he was never a bad character guy, just poorly mis-used etc?

Not many of those guys have off the field trouble tho right? Cook doesn't. Edwards didnt. McGee maybe? But he wasn't much of gamble.

I dont see Reggie using a high pick on a guy with character issues unless its Aldon Smith level talent. And we didnt really even gamble much on him.

When the team is loaded with character and leaders, players with borderline character issues can definitely fall in line. That's part of what we're building here. You hear Mack and Carr saying they've kept in touch with Smith during the off season.

Are we seeing a trend here?

Kasa, Tay-Tay, Connor, Carr and his eyeliner and wrist tattoos...

Reggie gonna install special bathrooms for these guys?

The personnel department is trying to forecast issues and solve problems before they arise.

"You really don’t want to draft for one year,” McKenzie said. “You want to make sure whoever you draft is going to help you for the duration. So, I really do not want to draft for the immediate need. Now, I’ll take a shot in the seventh round when we need a returner or something that’s going to satisfy something quickly.”

McKenzie doesn’t want a one-year fix, but he’s always looking for an immediate impact. That has happened several times over the past few seasons, with Carr, Khalil Mack, Gabe Jackson, TJ Carrie and Justin Ellis.

“We still want that quick-need fix to turn into a long-term fix,” McKenzie said. “The intent is to always look long term. When he gets on the field, it’s up to him. But we want the guy to be here for a while.”

:(

Instead we drafted a CB under investigation, a Jedi Master, Vanderdont, and David Sharpless.

Who needed Dalvin Cook, anyway?

Fuck You Reggie

Dude. Every forum has to have like 11 threads from a decade ago bumped?

Is there not a better way to do this and not clog up everybodys feed? Can you not just like some shit and move on?

The shit sucks amigo. Really it does.

Why are you posting on topics nearly a decade ago? Total waste of time for yourself/others and clogging up this forum.
