***Official Day 3 Draft Thread*** (2016)

Still, I don't remember a guy being touted as the best G one year and then winding up as a 7th round pick...without being injured.

mostly just - he slow. but honestly no clue why he dropped as far as he did. afaik he's healthy.

If you develop your players properly, you shouldn't have to start 3rd round draft picks their rookie season.
Nailed it!

He's a wave player at this point. He'll keep the pressure from the edge fresh all game long. In today's NFL you want guys who go all out every play, but no-one has enough wind and endurance to do that. You need depth to prevent a drop-off.

It looks like we're banking on pressure from the front seven to support our secondary because we don't have much quality depth in the backfield. To that end, we need quality up front to simplify what the secondary needs to do.

If we were going to be a coverage heavy and pass rush light, we'd have drafted more DBs.

Bottom Line: As a seventh-round pick, Alexander might not be expected to make an impact, but this is a solid value pick when you consider his positional versatility and his upside. This is a player who some had a first-round grade on in the past year, and with the right coaching he can add depth for the Raiders and possibly develop into a starter.

Y'all been asking for it for years.....both our o and d lines are fully stocked.
I think OL depth is a little thin, but... I'm okay with how we're going at it. Like the size and skill of Alexander.

Best interior 3 in the league, that's right, I said it.

Pittsburgh picked late in every round.

I like their draft more than ours.

Hargrave, Burns, Feeney, Matekevich, Davis, Hawkins.

Raiders help kick off fourth round with pick of Connor Cook

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie was schooled in the draft by Ron Wolf during his long tenure in the front office in Green Bay.

Even when they had an entrenched starter like Brett Favre or Aaron Rodgers, the Packers believed in the importance of drafting quarterbacks anyway to develop as backups or chips to trade in the future.

McKenzie did just that Saturday when he traded up to select Michigan Statequarterback Connor Cook with the second pick in the fourth round despite having an established starter in Derek Carr.

Cook said he was surprised to end up on a team with a young starter like Carr, thinking he might end up in Dallas as the heir apparent to Tony Romo. But McKenzie moved ahead of the Cowboys for the 100th pick by trading picks in the fourth (No. 114) and fifth (No. 154) rounds to the Cleveland Browns.

"I'm glad I found a home," Cook said. "A little bit of a wait. I'm glad the whole process is over."

The Raiders have now selected a quarterback in three of the past four drafts.

Before the start of the fourth round, multiple teams had shown interest in trading up for the first pick of the round, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Browns owned the first two picks in the fourth round. They used the first to take Wisconsin outside linebacker Joe Schobert and then sent the second to the Raiders. The 114th overall pick was used to take wide receiver Ricardo Louis.

Cook had been projected by many to go higher in the draft to a team looking for a potential starting quarterback but ended up being the seventh quarterback selected, going behind less-heralded players like NC State's Jacoby Brissett andUSC's Cody Kessler.

"Anytime you see another quarterback drafted in front of you it hurts," Cook said. "I'm a competitor. Obviously I think I'm one of the best quarterbacks in this draft class. But things are never easy. Nothing is ever perfect. Everything I was able to accomplish at Michigan State was never easy. Going on to the NFL, it's definitely going to get a little bit harder and more difficult."

Matt McGloin to be Carr's backup in Oakland. McGloin is eligible to be a free agent next year, and the Raiders wanted to add another quarterback to the mix.

Day 3 grade just went from F- to a D+. Alexander is a great value in 7th. But we basically screwed the pooch today. Red better pull some motherfucking magic out of his ass with the UDFA's. Overall draft grade, C-. Which makes me believe last 2 drafts were just dumb luck...
:chuckle:

I was questioning our depth. Bringing up the starters seems irrelevant when talking about depth.
Yeah, tackle is pretty weak, but we have 4.5 staters, and backup OG looks set with the new guy and Feliciano, who is our backup center?

It's not a bad group but I'd take Joseph over Burns, Calhoun over any of the rest, and I think we got good value in most of our picks. I'm happy with our draft. Not ecstatic like I was with the Mack/Carr/Jackson draft.

Of course you would.

No team has ever had a bigger homer.

I like Feeney, Matekevich and Hawkins more than anyone we picked today.

Hargrave was my favorite DL in the draft. I take him over Jihad all day.
