FS - SS (DRAFT PROSPECTS)

Neither Nelson or Allen are long term solutions so we need two safeties anyway. I really like Karl Joseph a lot... enough that I would be ok taking him in the 1st if we could trade down a couple of spots. I think he could excel in a Tyrann Mathieu type roll with us.

Too bad the Mathieu/Sanders role seems to spend a lot of time in the trainers' room.

Yeah, that's the downside for sure. Joseph doesn't exactly play with body preservation in mind either. Still, that attitude is contagious. Add a couple of ballers like Joseph and Bullard to our core and guys that aren't giving 100% will find themselves on an island pretty quickly.

Wonder if they will try to move McGill to FS and see if they can get anything out of him ? Dude hasn't done shit at CB. And now he's like our 5th/6th CB.

It does seem like his last best chance at being an NFL contributor.

I don't think anyone played more special teams snaps.

Sad that he couldn't beat out Thorpe for some garbage time reps though.

if we think Thompson can slip to us in the 3rd he's my overwhelming choice... the guy makes tons of plays and that's just something we don't ever see around here other than Chaz... we need a few guys in the secondary to make things happen, and he's a natural.
Thompson ain't getting out of round 2. None of these safeties are going in round 1 IMO.

I know some aren't going first, but a couple are sniffing it.. or at least won't make it to our current pick in the 2nd

Maybe Joseph and/or Von Bell goes in round 1. I'm not a GM but I just don't see round 1 value in any of these safeties. Maybe a team drafts for need and takes one or two of them in round 1. But none of them would be BPA in Onion's view.

Excerpt below from MMQB on dearth of safeties, and the challenge of finding big safeties that can match up with large TEs. Isn't Reggie Nelson only 5' 11"?

"This is what makes Iloka’s soft market so puzzling. He had some cornerbacking experience at Boise State. More importantly, he’s 6' 4" and 225 pounds, with long arms. He might not be able to shut down Rob Gronkowski on an island for four quarters, but he has the physical tools to compete with an athletic pass-catcher of Gronk’s mold.

Of signed NFL safeties who play meaningful snaps on defense, only a dozen are at least 6' 2". Only eight weigh at least 225 pounds, and only seven others weigh more than 215. An average tight end runs somewhere around 6' 6", 245, and defenses simply don’t have big enough athletes in the deep middle of the field to compete with these versatile offensive weapons.

The problem will only get worse before it gets better. This year’s draft class is particularly weak at safety. Only four of most experts’ top 20 safety prospects are 6' 2". And none weigh more than 219."

Tons of digging and here is who has come in for a private visit or workout as of today

Travis Feeney

Cody Core

W.Williams
R.Brown

I didn't realize they'd had Feeney in.... I wonder if they'd try him at SS :eek:

LOL... love the player... maybe top 10 athlete in this class, if not top 5... looks like a safety, hits like Chancellor too.... don't care for all the surgeries...

may have to rearrange my Lil Al.

you think he drops all the way to 4th with that medical baggage?

I don't know. A level athlete.

He and the Gophers lanky LB are intriguing athletes.

Feeney is a pass rusher in a safety frame. Why not just make him a weak side LB?
