Draft thread

And obviously there’s Wiseman.

http://www.nbadraftroom.com/2017/07/james-wiseman.html?m=1

He’s clearly got traits that can’t be taught. 7’1 with freaky athleticism, instincts, and some offensive game. Still, big men rarely make an impact in their first couple of years and barely playing this year isn’t going to help that. Plus the questions about his motor bug me. He’s one of just a couple players with star potential in this draft though.

Reminds me of David Robinson a little. Lefty with a huge wingspan that can run the floor and shoot as well.

DRob came into the league a grown man though. I worry this kid won’t start to to be impactful until his 3rd-4th year in the league. Not sure we can afford that with the core hitting the end of their prime.

I was looking at the roster for next year and we may need to select the person who can get buckets.

Edwards seems like a guy who could come off the bench and score. He has some issues like everybody else in this class. But its not hard to imagine him becoming at 20ppg guy. He his young and has an NBA body too. Likely can defend out there with that athleticism.

I also think he is maybe the best trade chip moving forward.

I like Wiseman, Okongwu Halinburton, Okoru, Hayes.... the Advidja guy or whatever even shows some promise. Saddiq Bey shoots 43% from 3 at 6'8, could trade down for him as well.

But sans Wiseman who fits nicely at C (but taking a C high is a no-no in modern NBA) I think Edwards is the guy. Steph, Klay, Wiggins = 60+ points every night. Probably more like 70-80. Where are we getting other buckets from?

Not Draymond. Looney is a ?. Paschall might be good for 10+ but doesn't space well with Draymond currently (someone has to make 3's between those two for that to happen)

Chirss is good for some put backs. Mulder can shoot threes. Poole might be able to add a few plays. Smaligic is too young. Lee is inconsistent.

I really think we need to add the best scorer available to beef up the offense. So I think I'm in the Edwards camp currently. I think his poor shooting numbers have more to do with the team/system and situation. He needs to be coached up, but he has tools for days and youth.

I don't want Ball personally bc he plays no defense and his jumper looks trash currently. He is a good player but a bad fit here w this roster IMO.

I imagine the Warriors would rather have one in the hand then gamble on a rookie tho. So I would bet money on us trading out of the spot. We have plenty of assets to trade and the Warriors might want someone they can plug in day one. Maybe these salary cap decrease will free someone up from a bad team. We can trade our top 5 this year, the T-Wolves (top 2 protected next year) or any of our other picks / Paschall etc

The Warriors also could make moves with the intention of trading at the deadline. Here is a take for you: The Warriors will need to up Wiggins value to move him. He will look great and be much more appealing after a few months of winning w Steph/Klay/Dray full speed. That contract will always blow, but dude is not trash like people say. I expect him to be the best Wiggins thus far next year. And he already scores 20 and CAN play defense when engaged.

I think we'll see a better Wiggins, especially defensively, but he's still pretty passive on offense even when he's the focal point. I wonder if he'll shrink even further when Steph and Klay are back. I think it would take more than a year before we could flip him but it's hard to say with the NBA landscape is going to look like in the COVID aftermath. I doubt we are in the market to add salary this year so it's likely that draft pick is getting used. That said, maybe look at the most tradeable prospect to include in a deal the following year. Hot shot scorers like Edwards seem to shine bright early so we could build up his value as a sure thing and then flip him, the Timberwolve pick, and a rehabbed Wiggins with on less year on his deal for something really good. Outside of that I agree with your take of just getting a microwave scorer to come off the bench.

Is the NBA still in business?

Fuck this virus. Very inconvenient. :D

I think the crazy space and attention that Klay & Curry take will help Wiggins shooting % go up. Klay was getting to the rim a bunch more and that was how he get injured vs Raptors. This team is still in dire need of a scorer who can get to the rim. Wiggins has often settled for bad shots and mid range shit way to often. He has a decent J but he forces it. Draymond also stalls holding the ball at the top of the key instead of slashing toward the basket and making plays. I also think he is at his best when he eats up that space they give him at the 3 point line. When he gets in the paint and makes plays that's when his offense is deadly. I don't expect him to start shooting better ( I hope he does) but he needs to get back to making plays. Last year he had no weapons to pass too. I thinking if we can get Klay and Curry to camp at the 3 point line then when Draymond drives he can dish the ball to Wiggins/Chriss near the basket. Obi Toppin fits nicely in this scenario on offense, just not defense. Wiseman fits great as the big post C who can also run and play D. So either of those pieces make sense w Draymond somewhat.

This is the reason I like A.Edwards tho. Microwave bunch scorer day one. Has size and strength to be a lock down defender if he chooses. He also can attack the basket and isn't afraid to shoot (H.Barnes)

You could run a small ball line-up:

Curry
Klay
Edwards
Wiggins
Green

Mix in Paschall and maybe even switch Klay and Edwards around from SG/SF. You'd have Curry & Green moving the ball playmaking. Green also setting HOF picks. Klay & Curry your deep 3 guys and Wigggins/Edwards your slashers. On defense you assign Curry vs there smallest player and Green play C. Deadly shit.

In that scenario we would need to add a FA center with size. I think the scoring would be enough and the athleticism on defense would be great. But we would be woefully undersized and out rebounded often. Adding a 7 footer somewhere who can play important minutes would be ideal. ex M.Gasol - realistic J.Poetl, Baynes, McGee, Olynyk, Maker, Noel, WCS, O'Quinn etc

We also have a few 2nd round picks. There are a ton of 7 footers with weight. A traditional body to start at C with Chriss/Looney/Dray is a must. Azibuike from Kentucky is one name. But there are a few big 2nd rounders. We need someone who can play the Andrew Bogut role w Draymond. I just wish we knew if Wiseman was that guy. Okongwu fits great but he doesn't solve the size problem.

I'm not worried about Wiggins percentages so much as his passiveness. His job will be easier being the third option but that also means he has to take what's open. We definitely need a microwave guy. Someone like Barbosa that isn't shy regardless of who's on the court. I read that we like Edwards but you can never trust that stuff. Sucks that we got robbed of the tournament because that's when I really start paying attention to guys. The NBA draft is almost an afterthought at this point.

As far as center goes... sign me up for a veteran. Olynyk would add a nice nasty element ala low budget Bogut.

Not seeing us taking Wiseman though. Seems his shine is starting to come of in the draft world anyway.

  1. So disinterested in bball now. Really should trade the ranch for Giannis. They could make it work if they moved some salary around. We get like $15mm-16mm exemption for Iggy. He'd play here for less for a chance to win a title and he is tight with Steph. I don't see this lineup contending without a major addition, especially a big man.

Be interesting to see what they really think about Smailagic and whether he impacts their decision to draft a big.

I haven't seen anything from this guy that shows me he is NBA ready. He is at least a couple years off. I doubt he affects the decision either way. I'm hearing rumblings that we might be looking to move a pick for an established pivot. I've heard Myles Turner's name being thrown around.

ii

We have enough guys his size. Need a big guy that can run the floor. Lakers and Clippers have big front courts. Not beating those guys with 5 midgets out there. Trade the pick for a big.

I actually think we need a scorer more than anything but we've been trying to find Iguodala's replacement for a few years and this kid looks good for that. A little light in the britches but has crazy reach. I think we can add a traditional big with the MLE and be good there. Clips actually aren't that big anyway. Lot's of length 2-4 but nothing crazy bulk wise. Lakers are big but they've got two of the most unique players in the league so I wouldn't get caught up trying to match up with them. We just need to BPA or best trade we can get regardless of position.
