Raiders Quotes on JaMarcus Russell before '07 Draft

Choosing a QB, and determining if the QB will succeed, is very hit or miss. Check out these quotes on JaMarcus prior to the '07 draft.

3. "I can't remember being in such awe of a quarterback in my decade of attending combines and pro days."
--ESPN's Todd McShay

8. (Russell)is going to immediately energize that fanbase, that football team -- on the practice field, in that locker room. Three years from now you could be looking at a guy that's certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league. ...You're talking about a 2-3 year period once he's under center. Look out because the skill level that he has is certainly John Elway-like."
--ESPN's Mel Kiper

Jeebus -- I can understand guys thinking he might be good, but this over the top raving was completely unjustified. What he fuck were people seeing in this guy?

I pretty much ignore ESPN anymore since NFLN came along. They're completely wothless hype-whores.

An NFL caliber QB, sure. I'm not seeing one of those this year, so...makes more sense to just take Johnson.

Drafting someone like Russell or Quinn only compounds our problems at QB. We passed up a pair of potential Cadillacs last year. Drafting a Hyundai this year, after passing on the Caddies, just doesn't make sense.

Kiffin wants to keep the pocket moving. Rollouts, etc. Grab a guy like Troy Smith at 4:1 and see what happens.

It just doesn't make sense to take an inferior player at #1 overall just because he's a QB. Bad, bad business.

I don't want to be the next team to draft Jeff George, Akili Smith, etc. Funk a buncha arm strength. Funk a buncha athletic ability. Give me a nifty footed field general/film junkie every day.
Anyway...

Not sure how I got stuck on the vehicle analogies, but Russell was definitely a lemon. Quinn as well, apparently.

You'll need to hit the archieves of the NFLforums.com for my thought

I recall many discussions about Joe Thomas and David Carr...LOL...of course I also said that if evaluated Russell as the next Elway, no way we pass him up.

A lot of guys wanted Calvin Johnson and a lot of guys wanted Brady Quinn...

Good thread ...if only we could draft with hindsight
