Nice article here (http://www.insidebayarea.com/raiders/ci_15569356). Plus some great videos of King calling Raider games.
Awesome. He was the best.

Dang those videos bring back some good memories...
The three announcers for my favorite teams growing up: Bill King, Vin Scully, Chick Hearn... It's all about the awesome...

Great article, awesome videos. So many of the clips showed Cliff Branch. When are they putting this guy in the HOF?

Figured HB would have a Dodger and Laker reference in there, geez:shakehead:
Scully is boring. Was like listening to Perry Como

It's a good thing for me that Padma Lakshmi isn't as sensitive to a couple of harmless references... :shakehead:

Bill King was one of the last great sports voices, because his passion wasn't limited to sports.
It's interesting, though, to hear how his style of call gradually changes. He starts as the voice of a team that is a perennial winner, but not a champion. Snake's scramble in Pittsburgh starts to change that. There's a little less carefree sound, a little more intensity in later calls. He knows he's not just broadcasting for a winner, he's broadcasting for a champion.
And it just occurred to me. Pretty sure there were only two numbers I saw playing C for Oakland. 00 and 50. Jim Otto and Dave Dalby.

Bill King was the best, period. I feel sorry for Greg Papa, who, as good as he is, will never get out from under that gigantic shadow.

When Papa had a radio show on the Ticket, one of the callers made a comparison to him and Bill King.He was still alive at the time, but anyway Papa
I believe had worked with him.And he went out of his way to downplay the comparison.Acted very modest as if Bill King was a legend (he is IMHO ) who he could only aspire to be compared to.
Yet I think that Papa is almost nearly as good at describing plays on the radio, gets a little bit excited at times.Almost a homer. But I still feel he is qualified to be compered to him

Being an east coast person I sure feel like I missed out on a lot. During that time period the announcers were always Curt Gowdy & Al DeRogatis. Bill King is a classic. Thanks for posting that.

Used to hear him over here on AFN (Armed Forces Network) in 80s/early 90s when thats the only way we could get live games.
Was one of the best ever - in any sport
