Finally a thread to say goodbye to that worthless piece of shit.
I thought about waiting, but there is no sense in waiting for an official release party. With the trade for and extension signed for Campbell, the Dummy is for sure gone. I don't care what Cable said about competition, Jason Campbell is our starting QB, no problem. And I for one, am VERY excited he is a Raider. Just his addition and Russell's subtraction makes us a 8-8 team in my opinion. As for the rest of our QB's, well... Gradkowski is exactly what I have said all along that he is. A good/almost great backup. No more, no less. And Boller and Frye can fight for #3. We now have a legitimate QB stable, best we have had in years and years. Gannon was great, but behind him we had Tui and Rick Mirer, so those years weren't as good as what we have now.
My only problem, is WHY THE FUCK HASN'T HE BEEN CUT YET? What the hell are they waiting for? Why would we want him in for our Minicamp this weekend? Why would we risk him breaking a cankle and having to pay him more in a settlement or have to keep him on the roster? Why the hell would we want to reduce the reps and effort and attention given to our QB's that have a legitimate shot of making our roster? Fuck him, he's done. Don't let him near the Raider Facilities. Have someone empty out his oversized locker, and send his crap to him. Fuck it, burn that shit. Why, why, why???
Somebody explain to me why he is still not cut...
Oh, and X, you are not allowed to spew your insanity in this thread... :D

I think he'll be given the opportunity to re-sign a new deal once he's been cut but there's no way they'll risk him out there getting injured and collecting another 9 mill.

The thread title led me to believe that Bones finally banned Byron...
I would think the last thing this team would want is to ruin the positive juju of this past weekend is the distraction JaMarcus at camp would cause...
Then again, knowing this franchise, we're probably hoping that he won't show up or does something else that allows us to fire him with cause...

Anyone remember those reports that came out a while ago...I think Willie Brown made some statements... that Russell was in much better shape and had been working out/practicing?
So... that was all pure bullshit, I'm guessing?
It's nice to know that the Raiders organization can be honest about its mistakes.

from what i understand we're waiting until he declines to take a pay cut. Until then we are treating him like an underperforming starting QB - take the pay cut or take a hike. He won't see the field until the financial obligations are no longer a concern.

I'd prefer he refuses to take a pay cut and he's released this week. No sense having that guy in the locker room. To me he's a cancer right now. His teammates don't like him and don't think he can play. They've been exceptionally easy on him. Enough is enough. Good bye.

I agree. Early on I supported Russell. Last year, somewhere around the Giants game, I officially became disgusted with the kid. I can't support his work habits or his performance on the field. I want to wash my hands of him forever. I am perfectly content with Campbell, Gradkowski, and Frye as the Qb's here in Oakland. All have tremendous work ethic and none of them embarasse the image of this team. Jamarcus has to go. I wish the kid could have taken the reigns and given this team a quarterback for 15 years. It would have been great to have someone like a Peyton Manning or a Dan Marino; a true franchise quarterback. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way. Ridding this team of Russell would send a message to the rest of the slackers on this team. If you don't buy in, get the F out.

The link pretty much confirms a long-held suspicion of mine that JaMarcus Russell was getting a LOT of very bad advice from those closest to him. They turned him into Fatback. Still, when a man realizes that the advice he's been getting has taken him to the abyss, he backs away from the edge and says, "Sorry, folks, but I need to change course." He hasn't, and for whatever reason -- most likely a stubborn determination to "keep it real" -- he won't. From that point on, it's all on him.
The Raiders will give him one last shot to renegotiate his deal. The bet here says he listens to the family and friends feeding his ego (even as they're no doubt raiding his pockets), and refuses. Al will then hit the EJECT button and this whole sorry saga will be over.

Not really. Family and friends, folks who've been feeding not his paunch, but his ego since he was little (was he EVER little?). I'm guessing they kept it up for the last three years -- even while they had their hands in his pocket. He calls himself being "loyal" to them.

I have a weird feeling that he isn't done in the NFL yet. He'll probably be gone for a year, maybe play the CFL or UFL for a season, but there'll be a team that takes a chance on him in an offseason. They'll hope that the humbling experience of being cut by the Raiders will have helped him to grow up. A team like Indy or NE would honestly be ideal for him, since he wouldn't have to worry about starting and the coaches and players will push him constantly.

I think the hold up is we are trying to trade him to Buffalo for a 7th round pick in the 2015 nfl draft. Buffalo is balking and wants us to throw something in to sweeten the deal.:D

1) Al isn't going to release him...not this year. He will keep him until training camp opens so he can see him one last time. On the day he visits the practice field on his Lark, he will witness JaMarcus connect with DHB on one long pass...and will believe that he has what it takes to me a successfull QB. Unfortunately, he will miss the 500 other passes that don't come close to a receiver.
2) The idea that anyone would trade for JaMarcus is ludacrous...why the F would anyone want to assume his contract? Yes, most...if not all, of his signing bonus has been paid but his base salary is still WAYYYYYY too much for any team to swallow at this point.

There is no way Al is going to risk having to pay his salary this year (plus medical comp) due to injury. No way he risks an extra 9+mil when he just paid Campbell and extended his contract. Not a chance. Russell is gone by the weekend...

You guys (RR and MT) both seem to be forgetting that we are talking about Al Davis here. He has never let logic or risk dictate his roster moves. After hearing all the criticism over the draft weekend regarding Russell, I belive Al is even more committed to keeping Russell just to try and prove them all wrong.
Every other team would have cut Russell yesterday...but every other team isn't the Raiders.

With the way we drafted this weekend, I am kinda hoping that Al has given up on that way of thinking. This draft had every making of being to the contrary of previous thought and direction. As always, we are dealing with Al, so I could be wrong, but I see something different happening right now. And I think it is going to continue to get better...

Negative. I think Al knows we can't develop QB's and that is why we didn't draft one. Russell has just enforced this belief with a sledgehammer. He is as good as gone. There are good football people now who are giving him good advice and he is taking it.

Yeah, it's understandable to have those nagging doubts. It is Al Davis, after all, and there's a history that's hard to ignore.

The rags to riches to rags story of Jamarcus has Greek tragedy written all over it. Well, okay, maybe not the pathos of the Greeks, but surely William Shakespeare? No? How about Billy's older less successful corpulent bro Jerry "Chocolate" Shakespeare, from whom Billy took some of his more notable inspiration, which clearly appplies to our soon to be departed beached whale.

Clayton: Raiders preparing to cut Russell
April, 27, 2010
By Bill Williamson
John Clayton just said on ESPN’s “NFL Live” that the Raiders are preparing the process of cutting quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
Clayton said it is not a matter of if, but when Russell will be cut. He also said the team could release Russell before Oakland’s minicamp, which runs Friday through Sunday, and that there is no trade market for him. The Raiders will save more than $6 million if they cut Russell this year.
Russell was the No.1 overall draft pick in 2007 and Oakland has paid him more than $36 million for three extremely unproductive seasons. The team decided to give up on Russell when they traded for Washington’s Jason Campbell during the draft.
I wrote Saturday that the Raiders needed to cut Russell now. It seems Oakland feel the same way. Lets see when it officially happens.

Per PFT:
Report: Raiders will cut Russell, possibly this week
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 27, 2010 4:57 PM ET
Even after the Oakland Raiders traded for Jason Campbell, coach Tom Cable said it was possible for JaMarcus Russell to earn the starting job. But a new report says the Raiders are going to cut Russell, possibly as soon as this week.
John Clayton of ESPN reports that the Raiders cutting Russell is a matter of "when," not "if," and that the team could release Russell before Oakland's upcoming minicamp, which opens Friday.
The Raiders will save $6.45 million if they cut Russell this year. It should probably go without saying that there's no trade market for him.
If Russell goes, the Raiders would have four quarterbacks left on their roster: Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski, Charlie Frye and Kyle Boller.

Al may not cut Russell until he absolutely has to (i.e. when roster sizes are enforced).... You look at what he did to Marcus Allen and Javon Walker when they hit the dog house.... if Russell is indeed in the doghouse.... Al could very well let Russell twist in the wind knowing the longer he hangs onto Russell, the more media attention it draws, the more discouraged Russell will become, the more ridiculous Russell will look (figuratively and literally).... We'll really find out how much spite Al has in him when it comes to the biggest bust in sports history.... I have no plans of holding my breath til then....

Sources: Russell release imminent
By John Clayton
ESPN.com
Archive
The Oakland Raiders are preparing to release quarterback JaMarcus Russell but have to await the final word to release him from owner Al Davis, according to sources.
Russell is on the books for $9.45 million this season, including $3 million of guaranteed money. Since trading for former Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell on Saturday, the Raiders have studied Russell's contract and tried to figure out ways to release him to save the organization some money.
If he gets the $3 million (and sources expect that he will), Russell will have been paid $39 million since coming to the team as a first-round pick in 2007.
The Raiders have a minicamp Friday and it's very possible Russell could be released before then. If Davis doesn't give the go-ahead to release him before Friday, he might attend the minicamp, but the team might not let him practice, fearing that he would suffer an injury and leave the team liable for the $9.45 million in salary.
Did the Raiders hire a GM and not tell anyone? Since when does Al have to sign off on anything?

But load up some people's pockets with coin, and that's the end of them as far as any hard work or motivation to accomplish anything (as they have already accomplished what they set out to do - which was only to collect the coin...). And if there is no motivation and hard work, the team might as well just cut bait and lick its wounds on arguably the biggest draft bust in the history of the league. But need to move forward, and good to see the team ding that. Now if Curly can get this damn OL fixed up, maybe we can have a chance to be competitive...

He's nuts if they offer him a chance to stay on the team with a restructured minimum deal and he refuses. I'm sure Al is offering him the chance as he's on the hook for 3 mill anyway. Let's just turn the chapter on JR and be done with it.

Numbers don't lie about Russell

With ESPN’s John Clayton reporting that Oakland is preparing to cut quarterback JaMarcus Russell, ESPN Stats & Information came up with several great charts that illustrate that Russell just may be the worst draft pick of all time. Russell was the No. 1 overall pick in 2007.
Since the start of the common draft in 1967, 17 QBs have been drafted first overall (not including Sam Bradford in 2010). Among those 17, Russell is either last or second-to-last in career completion percentage, passing yards per game, and passer rating.
Lowest Career Comp Pct., QB Drafted No. 1 Overall (Since 1967)
* Terry Bradshaw: 51.9 (1970)
* JaMarcus Russell: 52.1 (2007)
* Jim Plunkett: 52.5 (1971)
* Matthew Stafford: 53.3 (2009)
* Rookie season in parenthesis
Lowest Career Pass YPG, QB Drafted No. 1 Overall (Since 1967)
* JaMarcus Russell: 131.7 (2007)
* Michael Vick: 134.8 (2001)
* David Carr: 157.9 (2002)
* Alex Smith: 163.5 (2005)
* Rookie season in parenthesis
Lowest Career Passer Rating, QB Drafted No. 1 Overall (Since 1967)
* Matthew Stafford: 61.0 (2009)
* JaMarcus Russell: 65.2 (2007)
* Jim Plunkett: 67.5 (1971)
* Alex Smith: 69.2 (2005)
* Rookie season in parenthesis
In 2009, Russell finished with a passer rating of 50.0 and completed 48.8 percent of his passes. Among non-rookie QBs to throw at least 200 passes in a season, Russell is just the fifth to have a passer rating and completion percentage less than or equal to 50.0 in the last 30 years.
* JaMarcus Russell, OAK: 2009
* Craig Whelihan, SD: 1998
* Rusty Hilger, DET: 1988
* Vinny Testaverde, TB: 1988
* Mark Malone, PIT: 1987
Here is a stat from Elias Sports Bureau that also shows how ineffective Russell has been.
