Texans have said they will not use the franchise tag for a 2nd year on the CB

Dunta is a realistic traget. Dansby and Peppers (IMO) are not.

Somebody's going to pay Robinson too. Not as much as Peppers or Dansby, but when you're the #1 CB on the free agent market, you're going to get paid handsomely.

This is what I mean. Robinson is no where as good as Cromarti. However, guys would endorse bringing him in on a long term deal that you'd have to pay this guy instead of trading for Cromarti and taking his current contract on.

Robinson doesn't play man corner, so you'd ahve to have blind faith that he'd adjust to our scheme, too. He's a good player, don't get me wrong. However, Dante Robinson isn't worth breaking the bank for. Otherwise, Houston wouldn't have let him walk.

Robinson doesn't rely on his physical skills as much as Cro. But he's easily the better CB

Couldn't you say the same for Cromartie and the Chargers shopping him?

Peppers and Dansby are worth breaking the bank for, but they will be free agents in the next two weeks.

Great players become free agents every year.

The problem with the 2 franchise tag rule, is that the 3rd year hinders you so much, you end up paying a great player, elite level money.

If Dunta's price tag was 10 or 11 mil a year, the Texans make this a no brainer. Because he needs to be paid as a top five OVERALL player due to the two franchise tags he's received...22 mil for one season is a little extreme. (Peppers and Dansby are the same).

Cromartie is overrated. He does play man better than zone however. He thinks he is way better than he is. I dont want any part of that guy. Dunta is a much more solid corner. He is going to want too much money and he has had that ugly injury that happened when they played us. I think he would be fine in man coverage because he still is fast to spite that ugly knee injury.

I think they're both good players, Peppers at times is great. However, neither of those players address what we're in dire need of, nor do they necessarily fit into what we do on defense in Dansby's case.

Seymour was who we traded for last year to anchor the defensive line, otherwise, I'd want peppers here. Dansby, I think is a good player, but he's not a game changer at LB. They're both good players, but they're not invaluable to the teams they are leaving, in Peppers case because his one year salary would just be too outrageous.

Also, we're discussing trading for a player currently under contract as opposed to signing a bit ticket free agent, which Robinson will be on this market. He's going to end up with a Nate Clements type of deal. Don't you think the 49ers would like that money back? Robinson is a good CB, but he's not elite, nor will he ever be in my estimation.

A.J. Smith hates him. The same man that managed to alienate LT, Lorenzo Neal, Merriman, and Marty Schottenheimer, among others. I don't think that's a crime when you need a fresh start because your boss hates you.

He fined this guy during training camp for complaining about the food. Give me a break.

Hardly. I stated before Meangelo ever took a snap here that he didn't fit here for the same reasons Cromarti does. Cromarti played man since college, Meangelo never did, never wanted to, never could. It's a huge difference. You don't just have to run fast, it's a different technique and mentality. Hall broke down how you have to swivel your hips differently in the scheme, which he refused to do.

Yes, Cromarti still has some rough edges, but I think he can be exceptional in our system, especially with Asomugha helping him. Most importantly, he wants the island, he prefers it because it's what he learned at FSU under Mickey Andrews.

I could easily see Al overpaying for Robinson. I don't think he learned his lesson from the Meangelo Hall debacle.

Wow.

I'm going to pretend I didnt read this thread.

Dansby isnt a game changer? Really? He's among the strongest, most physically gifted linebackers in the league. He's the epitome of a game changer in that he never gives too much. I'd rather have a steady, smart LB who is always strong at the point and making the sure tackle, then a guy like Morrison who makes a nice TFL, then gives up 3 receptions and whiffs on the TD run.

As far as Robinson vs. Cromartie...Its not even close if you watch them play. For every pick Cromartie makes, there are 5 receptions completed against him. 2008 he was statistically the worst CB in the league. He was bullied. I don't need flash out there, especially in our system. I want someone who will be in good position, make the odd play and not cost us the game.

Then your even more wrong than usual...

I'm not advocating signing him, but the dude can play. Cromartie can't hold his jock.

I respect your opinion, 007, but I disagree. Robinson will get overpaid like Nate Clements, and you'll be wondering why he's not making a bigger impact. He's a good player, not great. Also, the fact that Cromarti prefers man coverage, which he was excelling at during his first 2 seasons, is kind of important to what we do. You can bury your head in the sand about what Al wants, but he wants man corners. As far as 2008, Cromarti has disclosed that he was playing most of the year with a bad hip that the team tried to cover up. Anyone ever thought, maybe that's what got him in Smith's doghouse because he spoke on it publicly? Seems like it's been sour grapes since last off-season when that disclosure was made.

Dansby, no one would dispute is better than Morrison. However, big ticket free agent, he is not. He's adaliusThomas part II. He's good, he's solid, he's not special. I watch too many Cardinals games for my liking when I'm back in Scottsdale, and see exactly what he does.

I was listening to so called experts that break down film on these players discussing his possible move to the Dolphins this morning on sports talk while I was moving around in MIami and they shared my same sentiments. He's good, he's solid, but you're asking for trouble if you're making him your team's cornerstone defender with a truck load of money. That's all I was saying about the guy, not knocking him.

Unfortunately, you've fallen for the Madden Trap amigo. Happens all the time.

Cromartie is faster, bigger and has more INTs! He's way better!

It's flat out wrong. I don't care if my starting CB's get 1 pick a season, I want steady consistent play all over the field.

Cromartie has been one of the worst cover corners in the NFL two years running. Bullied. Abused.

Dunta is just a better player. Period.

As far as Dunta on our team, he wouldnt be our cornerstone defender. We have Aso for that. We have Seymour for that. I don't really want to sign another CB, but Robinson is a good player. Some team will be lucky to have him...

No, I haven't. I've watched Cromarti since he was a freshman at FSU. I wanted the Raiders to draft him in '05 when it was reported Al liked him. True, he's a rare size/speed combo, but that's not why I want him. He's a playmaker. I said it when he was with the Noles, he stood out to me. He likes playing man up, and did it quite well. It's the same way I scrutinized Hall when we traded for him because he's exactly what you've described, a Deion wannabe who relied on his physical gifts too much, On the other hand, Cromarti is a fish out of water playing zone and is very aggressive because that's what he was rooted in as a man corner from his college years until early in his pro career.

Cromarti has been talking in the media this week about how significantly the scheme changed under Rivera to zone from the aggressive style they brought under Phillips. I want a player who relishes that challenge.

Asomugha is the definition of what you're talking about, steady with not many stats, mainly these days cause he doesn't get thrown at.

However, he's good at man coverage, he was brought up in it. Cromarti was brought up in it, then asked to do something totally different the last two years. I think he'd excel if he were put back into his comfort zone, jmho. Also, I have no idea how Robinson would react to that switch because he's never done it.

I never discussed him as a defensive cornerstone for any team, I was talking about DAnsby. Robinson is a good player, but I don't think he's a lock down corner or ever will be, and I doubt if anyone would dispute that assessment of him. Btw, Cromarti isn't either. However, we're only talking about what would be better for the Raiders with Asomugha on the other side now, and corner being an upcoming need on this team.

i just think a trade for Bush or whatever mid round pick SD wants would be better than paying a lot of money to Robinson.

Fair enough. I agree with your trade scenario.

I don't want Cromartie or Robinson though, but people saying we dont need :: or won't get:: a CB this offseason are crazy, IMO.

Dunta's rep in here is ridiculous. He played average the past 3 years. A guy who depended on speed, maybe he got slower after his injuries, who knows. But i'd take cromartie over him in a man press coverage defense. In that set up he's better. honestly though i'd prefer to have a tory james or chris mccallister type next to Aso or in nickel. Somebody physical. Leigh Bodden, Marlin Jackson(if he can stay healthy), and even Croamartie are decent options if we arent paying them a stack of cash. Routt will probably be retained though knowing us. :(
