View Full Version : I'm not buying it!!!

I'm still not buying the fact that we are keeping Cable, at least not as HC. It just doesn't make sense. I think Al wants the media to believe that to take the heat off Harbaugh for recruiting purposes. After that I do believe Harbaugh will be here.
Think about it. We had another bad season. Although we beat some very good teams, we lost to a lot of bad ones. Al almost fired Cable twice last year, Cable tells the media that this team would of been better without Al's baby. Thus dissing Al in public. Then Al interviews and hires a DL coach and an OC without Cable in the interviewing process. I would think the head coach would be involved. I know this is Oakland we are talking about though.
Al's health is failing and he knows he won't be around to run the team forever. I think he wants to hire someone he can trust and bring this team back to being a force again. I think Harbaugh is that guy. I also think he told Al who he wants, thus the hiring of Waufle and Jackson. Al Davis never said Cable will be back to coach this team again.
Nothing would make him more happy tan hiring the guy he wants, who is well respected and can fill the stadium and possibly bring some free agents this way, and to prove the media wrong once again.
Cable, Waudle, and Jackson all coached at Cal in the mid 90's.
Could be a coincidence.
...or not.

I don't know what Al is thinking about retaining Cable (or anything else for that matter) or not. But what I do know is that by not saying either way, the Raiders keep their options open to talk to any potential coaching candidates (whether their real intentions are to talk with them for the HC position or for OC or position coach for that matter) without having to be granted permission by their current employer (under the auspices of interviewing that candidate for the HC position...). The Hue Jackson "interview" is a case in point... Apparently last year, Al wanted to interview him but was denied by the Ravens. This year, under the auspices of talking to him about the HC position, he essentially throws the Ravens the finger. Declare that your HC position is filled and Al loses the potential opportunity to talk and pick anyone's brain that he wants... Don't ever confuse me with a Davis apologist, but the crusty old bastard does have some tricks up his sleeve especially when it comes to screwing with the league...

Thank god he's not focused on boring, everyday things like, you know, for instance, building a winning team. It would really, really suck if he was putting his efforts into that instead of fun stuff like trying to piss off the league.

ESPN Story (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4859138)
"This guy was the first player drafted. It's going to be fun to see if we can get him up and playing the way we all wish that he can perform," Jackson said on ESPN 1000. "It's not just about JaMarcus. The quarterback takes on a whole life by itself but it's the team, the whole offensive unit has to perform well around the quarterback."
Uh, Hue??? The offensive unit did perform well around the quarterback WHEN THE QUARTERBACK WASN'T JAMARCUS RUSSELL.

I'm sorry, but that isn't entirely true. While we certainly looked much better without JaWalrus in there, our line couldn't keep the other qb's from getting killed. DHB dropped passes with Grads in there as well.
Not defending JaMarcus, but we have more holes on offense than just qb.

When your ship is taking on water from multiple holes, you must fix the biggest hole first. I don't care what anyone says, we will not win with Jamarcus Russell at QB.

Regardless of who the QB is, the o-line needs to be rebuilt. Carlisle and Green suck, period. First two picks should go to those positions. As for lard ass, we'll see. Al has a simple choice: either Russell earns the starting position (doubtful) or he forces the coaches to play him, and the team is looking at another 5 win season. I don't know if it signals that Al is hell bent on playing the piece of shit, or whether the goal was just to get a seemingly well respected offensive coach to help Cable. I think/hope it's the latter, but we'll know much more in the pre-season.

That's been a big part of the problem for that last 20 years or so. Al enjoys trying to defeat the league and the media (stadiums, cities, draft selections, rules, etc) so much so that it seems to have diluted his on-field attentions. And with his paranoia and stubborness, he won't bring in anybody to assist and take control of on-field football operations. Perfect recipe for producing a shitty team...

We got an "OC" with the following resume. Not saying he can't be successful, but this has got to make you nervous:
Hue Jackson's Offensive Coordinator Experience
1997-2000: USC (Norm Chow replaced him)
2003: Washington Redskins; offense ranked 22nd in points per game (17.9), 23rd in yards per game (291.2), and 4th in most penalties yards (1038...Raiders were #1 with 1120)
2007: Atlanta Falcons; offense ranked 29th in points per game (16.2), 23rd in yards per game (301.0), and 3rd in most penalty yards (891)

in 2003, he did not call plays, Steve Spurrier did. So you only have one year to look at which is 2007 and he had Joey Harrington of all people as his QB. Besides, that year in atlanta was a total wash after the Vick incident, Patrino leaving in the middle of the season etc.
So you are looking at a very small sample of his play calling resume. Not saying he's going to be great but he couldn't be any worse than Cable as our play caller. What i'm looking forward to more is what he can do with our recievers (DHB) and fat boy. Bengals fans and Ravens fans have nothing but good things to say about the man. Lets see what he can do in oaktown.

I'm still hoping against hope that Cable is going to be replaced.
What we have now is a situation where people ... like ... him.
Not RESPECT, ... but like.
Jackson likes (will like him) him because he knows he doesn't really have to answer to him - he'll answer to Al.
Ditto for the players - who have laid down and spread their legs half the time under Cable.
They know Cable is merely Al's lapdog, so they don't really fear him at all.
And watching our guys, if any group NEEDS to have a little fear put into 'em, it's them.
Davis likes him because he knows that at the end of the day, Cable is gonna do it his way - see going with Gump 3/4 of the season last year.
I want a coach that commands some RESPECT.

Jackson said that while he talked with Cable, most of his time was spent with the owner.
“Tom and I have had some good conversations, but I spent most of my time talking with Mr. Davis,” Jackson said. “What a man. He’s one of the guys in this profession that you would like to have an opportunity to sit down and talk with, let alone work for. My conversations with him led me there. Hopefully, things will work as planned, and I think we’re capable of doing it.”
Yes, just what we fuckin' need.

The only problem is that most "experts" think there will be a rookie salary cap for that draft, so a top-5 pick would cost a lot less than usual. But you are right, a bust is a bust at whatever price and Al's recent record of 1st round picks is miserable.

PT,
Hear you loud and clear. But who is making the HC hire?? Do you really think that Al is going to bring in someone that is not going to be his lapdog and do exactly what he wants?? That is exactly the problem. There really is no chance for real improvement until the man at the top relinquishes control and that does not appear to be anything that is going to happen soon. You are right, Cable is still here because Al has exactly what he wants - someone who will do what Al tells him to do. Play JRuss - yes, sir... Take out ZBS, run power, put in vertical passing - yes, sir... play single man high man-to-man straight up D - yes, sir... tell them DHB was our top man on the draft board last year all along - yes, sir. And can't really blame Cable either... he knows that as soon as he breaks form, Al pulls out the overhead projector and then starts making phone calls again to Art Shell, Jim Fassel, and Denny Green. And if the Gruden story tells anything to these guys it is - better off losing Al's way than butting heads with the old fart trying to win... and better off taking a few million from the geyser for a few years and moving on.
