Brady Quinn's season is over
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on December 22, 2009 10:49 AM ET
It's anyone's guess if Mike Holmgren sees Brady Quinn as a possible starter for next year's Browns team.
We do know that Holmgren won't get to evaluate Quinn any more this season.
The Browns announced on Twitter that Quinn has been placed on injured reserve with a foot injury. Derek Anderson will start Sunday against the Raiders.
The news is a surprise because there were no reports previously that Quinn was even hurt. His numbers, however, were hurting during Cleveland's current two game winning streak. Quinn completed only 16-of-36 passes for 156 yards combined in the wins.
It's hard to evaluate any quarterback on an offense as bad as these Browns, but Quinn hasn't proven yet he can a viable NFL starter. His accuracy and ability to go down the field looked shaky in nine starts.
Out of 33 qualifying NFL quarterbacks, Quinn finishes second to last in completion percentage and yards-per-attempt. The only player Quinn bests in both categories: JaMarcus Russell, of course.
2007 was clearly not a good year to select a quarterback at the top in the NFL Draft.
I'm sure DA will have no problem handing off to whatever that RB's name is that ran up 285 yards on the Chefs last week. And unless he's taking over for Cribbs too, I think this team is still dangerous...

The Browns are more dangerous without Quinn just like the Raiders are more dangerous without Russell.

Our run D and special teams better come to play. If not it is going to be another big day for James Harrison and Joshua Cribbs. I'll be honest I thought earlier this game was going to be an easy win and maybe our first double digit win of the season but with harrison's big play capability and us giving up so many big plays it scared the hell out of me.

Special teams coverage units have sucked ass all year. It figures that we finally get a decent ST coach last season and he bolts. Fassel as well as Sanjay Lal need to go. Any word on if Frye will be ready to go Sunday?

Quinn seems to have the QB smarts but seems to lack the physical attributes.
Russell seems to have all the physical attributes but seems to lack the QB smarts.
I think they cancel each other out.
I say seems because I am not an NFL talent evaluator and I neither have the time or see any valid reason to study up on either one of these non-productive individuals.

Except when you compare statistics, like the article said.
Quinn will put the work in. Unless you can play QB from a LazBoy with a glass of sizzrup in one hand and a big mac in the other, Russell will never put the work in. Gannon said on his radio show, he offered to fly out there and work with Russell on his own dime and Russell said "no thanks"
Russell is a ridiculous excuse for a professional athlete.

Injuries leave Raiders uncertain at QB this week
By JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports Writer
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) A late-game comeback against the rival Denver Broncos looked as if it could be just the springboard JaMarcus Russell needed to get his struggling career back on track.
The problem is it might not even get him his starting job with the Oakland Raiders back. A day after Russell threw the game-winning touchdown pass with 35 seconds left in a 20-19 victory over the Broncos, coach Tom Cable said he would wait until Wednesday to announce his starting quarterback for this week's game in Cleveland.
Bruce Gradkowski would get the nod if he has recovered from his two sprained knees, and Charlie Frye would be next up assuming he gets over the concussion that knocked him out Sunday and gave Russell the chance to lead the comeback.
Cable wasn't exactly gushing Monday in responding to a question about whether Russell's game-winning drive proved that he can still be the quarterback to lead the Raiders in the future.
"There were some things in that game yesterday that he could have taken advantage of, before that last throw, or the last couple of throws and all that, would have really put that, in my mind, to make that kind of statement," Cable said.
"He made the ones that counted right there at the end to get it done. And that's a big deal for him personally. I think it's good for his teammates to see him go in there in that situation and get it done when it really had to get done."
Frye went down early in the fourth quarter when his head hit the turf following a hit by Broncos linebacker Andra Davis. Russell came in and underthrew Louis Murphy on third down on his first pass of the game to end an Oakland drive.
Russell failed to get a first down on the next drive as Michael Bush dropped a low pass on third-and-2. Then trailing 19-13, Russell got the ball at his own 38 with 3:29 left. He promptly was sacked and fumbled on the first play, getting saved when Cooper Carlisle dove on the loose ball for Oakland.
Russell was later knocked out for a play before returning for a fourth-and-10 from the Denver 43 just before the 2-minute warning. He converted that with an 11-yard pass to Tony Stewart and followed with two more completions that moved the ball to the 10.
After two incomplete passes, Russell hit Chaz Schilens on a crossing route for a 10-yard score to give the Raiders the lead. He finished 5 for 11 for 47 yards and the score.
"It was good for him to go in there and lead us down the field," Schilens said. "Hopefully that gives him some confidence. I was happy for him."
Russell got benched after struggling through the first half of the season. He returned in last week's loss to Washington and was mostly ineffective and booed by the home crowd.
For the season, Russell has completed 47.8 percent of his passes, with 10 interceptions, five lost fumbles and just three touchdown passes. His 49.6 passer rating is the lowest in the league.
Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, has also been criticized for his work ethic and his weight. His teammates hope this latest performance will help turn his career around.
"It's in JaMarcus' hands to say what he's going to do," defensive end Greg Ellis said. "He showed what he can do yesterday."
The win also could provide a boost for Cable, whose job could be in jeopardy because of a 9-17 record since replacing the fired Lane Kiffin early last season. A late-season win in Denver last year helped Cable shed the interim label and come back for a full season as coach.
Owner Al Davis has only once fired a coach in the same season that the team won a game in Denver. Davis fired Art Shell after the 1994 season in a move he later said was a mistake.
"We are fighting very hard for him," running back Darren McFadden said. "Everyone on the team loves Coach Cable and at this point in time I don't think it is a concern if he is coming back or not, we are just trying to finish the season out strong."
NOTES: TE Zach Miller hopes to return this week from his second concussion of the season. Miller missed Sunday's game after being knocked out in the closing minutes the previous week against Washington. ... Rookie WR Darrius Heyward-Bey is making progress with a sprained foot and could return to practice this week after missing the pas three games. ... RB Justin Fargas is day to day with a sprained knee.

Lawton suspended four games
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, December 24th, 2009 at 1:54 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The NFL has suspended fullback Luke Lawton for four games for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.
Lawton will miss the Cleveland and Baltimore games this season, and the first two games of the 2010 season without pay. He started three games this season and played in all 13.
That leaves the Raiders with only converted halfback Gary Russell as the lone fullback on the roster. The Raiders have one fullback, Marcel Reece, on the practice squad who could be activated to face the Browns.

But I think we are going to show him why not...

Lawton suspended four games

It may be the night before Christmas, but there was plenty of stirring today in the NFL's league office.
Raiders fullback Luke Lawton has been suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances, according to the Oakland Tribune.
Lawton is ineligible to play the rest of this season and the first two games of next season. He's played in all 13 games this year, starting three.
Super Bowl touchdown scorer Gary Russell has converted to fullback, and is the only fullback on Oakland's active roster.

Russell at fullback, and I mean Jamarcus. Never liked Lawton so can't say it bothers me. We are definitely weak at FB, maybe Cable can ask Bush pretty please with sugar on it. Although, kind of hoping Fargus is out so we can see more thunder and lightening.
