6:08:54 pm Raiders coach Tom Cable on what grade he'd give himself at the season's midpoint: "A C-plus, at best. I'm not an excuse guy, but I think not having enough people healthy on offense has really hindered us. And I think I have to take responsibility of being 2-6. That's the bottom line."

6:06:15 pm Raiders coach Tom Cable said he's confident he'll keep his job for the remainder of the season but hasn't received assurances from team owner Al Davis. "We didn't even talk about that," Cable said. “We talked about … the team, personnel moves, the second half. Those are not issues for us to discuss. There's no need to right now."

5:49:42 pm Raiders rookie DE Matt Shaughnessy had five tackles, his first NFL sack and another tackle for a loss against San Diego. He'll start against Kansas City if Greg Ellis, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday, can't. Shaughnessy said he made his first start at Wisconsin as a freshman when the starter was injured.

5:11:20 pm The Raiders signed WR/KR Shaun Bodiford, 27, to their practice squad. He has one career NFL catch and has appeared in 12 games. He's been with the Packers, Redskins, Lions and Giants. The 5-11, 186-pound Bodiford played collegiately at Portland State.

4:37:20 pm Starting RT Cornell Green has been out since suffering a calf injury in Week 4 against Houston, but he'll return to practice Monday, coach Tom Cable said. Cable hopes to have him back in the starting lineup Nov. 15 against Kansas City.

4:35:38 pm Raiders RB Darren McFadden, who has been out since suffering a knee injury in Week 4 against Houston, will return to action after the bye against Kansas City, coach Tom Cable said. Will he keep his starting job? "I haven't really thought that far ahead, but we'll certainly get him involved."

4:34:08 pm If Raiders LG Robert Gallery returns to the starting lineup after the bye against Kansas City, Chris Morris will go to the bench and Samson Satele will remain at center, coach Tom Cable said. Morris won the starting center job out of camp but moved to left guard when Gallery broke his left leg in Week 2.

4:20:52 pm Raiders coach Tom Cable said he has talked to team owner Al Davis about allegations he faces concerning domestic violence. Is the issue resolved? "What we talked about is between us, and we'll keep it that way," Cable said.

3:59:43 pm The Raiders are on pace to score 156 points, fewest in team history. That includes strike-shortened 1982, when they scored 260 in nine games. It also includes 18 seasons when they played only 14 games and one (1987) when they played 15 because of another strike. The current record is 168 points in 2006, coach Art Shell's final year.

3:30:47 pm The Raiders cut OG Brandon Rodd from their practice squad, and there's a new player on the field, wearing No. 10. No word yet on the identity of the mystery wide receiver.

2:56:39 pm Raiders CB Chris Johnson (groin) and DT Gerard Warren (foot) are among those missing practice today, the first of two workouts the team will have during its bye week. OT Cornell Green (calf), WR Nick Miller (shin), TE Tony Stewart (chest), LB Ricky Brown (ankle) and DE Greg Ellis (knee) are also out. Ellis is scheduled to have arthroscopic knee surgery today.

2:44:21 pm Starting OLB Jon Alston suffered a concussion –- his second of the season -- and a strained neck Sunday against the Chargers, but he's on the field for today's non-padded practice. WR Chaz Schilens, who hasn't played since breaking his left foot Aug. 19, returned to practice after missing last week following a setback.

2:23:24 pm Raiders starting RB Darren McFadden is practicing today for the first time since undergoing knee surgery after an Oct. 4 injury against Houston. He has missed four games but expects to play after the bye on Nov. 11 against Kansas City. McFadden has rushed for 146 yards on 47 carries, averaging just 3.1 yards per carry.

Cable, Davis have talked about allegations

Satele to keep job as starting center

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 at 2:09 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News, notes and quotes from the Raiders’ bye week practice, open locker room and press briefing by coach Tom Cable:

– The Raiders expect to be at full strength on the offensive line when they resume play Nov. 15 against Kansas City. Right tackle Cornell Green will practice with no limits starting next week and said he will be ready to play.

Robert Gallery will be back at left guard after being out breaking his left fibula in Week 2.

When those men return, Chirs Morris, the starting center who moved to left guard when Gallery was hurt, will be a reserve player at center and guard with Samson Satele retaining the job as starting center.

Satele conceded catching on the the zone blocking system took awhile, especially after missing OTAs following shoulder surgery.

“Now, I got this offense down,” Satele said. “Now I can just go and run with it and get the starting job back, and it’s my job to lose I guess.”

“It’s more a techinique thing. I was still in my power reaches instead of zone reaches so once I got that down, Cable saw it, and I handled it pretty well, like you said. I didn’t take it in a negative way. It took me about four weeks into the season and I’m right back in it.”

Said Cable: “When you evaluate his play and Chris’ play when Chris was the center, it surpassed it. He’s been really a bright spot for us lately.”

– Cable said he expected Darren McFadden to play against Kansas City, but hadn’t thought ahead to if he would return as a starter or be utilized in combination with Justin Fargas, Michael Bush or both.

– The Raiders used the initial bye week practice to clean up problems in the first eight games.

“Every thing that we did in practice today and everything tomorrow will be directly related to what the negative issues have been thus for the first half,” Cable said. “So it is very much focusing on just us, and where we’ve had problems and where they need to get cleaned up and trying to get some cleared some things cleared up for certain individuals.”

In what might be a bigger upset than beating the Eagles, the Raiders managed to finish a practice related to all their negative issues in under two hours.

– Rookie wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, with five receptions in eight starts, continued to shrug off a lack of statistical production for what he believes is truly important.

“It’s just frustrating when we lose. Point blank, end of story,” Heyward-Bey said. “I didn’t come in thinking no crazy numbers or anything. I just want to help the team win. We’ve only won two so I’m not helping.”

Heyward-Bey, reviewing his own play through eight games, said his weekly evaluations have been good.

“I haven’t made the plays I want to make, but I’ve definitely been solid looking at my grades that come out of the game,” Heyward-Bey said. “I’ve been very solid. There’s always room for improvement with the whole receiving corps. We’ve been all right.”

– Speaking of grades, here was Cable’s response to grading how he’s done as head coach the first half of the season: “A C-plus, at best. I just feel like, obvious issues that are out of our control, I’m not an excuse guy, but I think not having enough people healthy on offense has really hindered us, and I think I have to take responsibility of being 2-6. So that’s the bottom line.”

– Wide receiver Chaz Schilens said he is currently at about the same point in his recovery from a broken metatarsal as he was the week of the Jets game before being forced to back off because of soreness.

“I just did a little too much and that’s really all that happened,” Schilens said. “So we just backed off, doing a little bit at a time, being as careful as I can be.”

Given that he’s already been the focus of one press release saying he’d be back against the Jets, Schilens didn’t want to look ahead to Nov. 15 and speculate.

“Right now I’m just taking it day to day, so if I wake up tomorrow and it doesn’t feel any worse, I know we’re good,” Schilens said.

– Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said players amongst themselves had talked about the possibility of bringing in wide receiver Chris Chambers after he was cut from San Diego.

“The guys were like, `He could help us,’ as far as injuries and those sorts of things,” Asomugha said. “But I guess Kansas City got him.”

The Chiefs claimed Chambers before the Raiders had a chance. It’s doubtful the Raiders would have claimed Chambers anyway, given that his $2.4 million salary is part of the package. Cable indicated the Raiders probably wouldn’t have made a run at him even at a lesser price had he cleared waivers.

– Asomugha, the Raiders well-read cornerback who has used the words “apocryphal” and “sententious” in quotes while talking with reporters at various times, was stumped by “opprobrium,” the five-dollar word the Raiders dropped into a press release about allegations against coach Tom Cable.

Opprobrium is defined as “public disgrace or ill fame that follows from conduct considered grossly wrong or vicious.”

“Don’t know that one,” Asomugha said.

– Asomugha played police officer Ken Shaw in the season premiere of “Friday Night Lights” on DirecTV, a small role in which he brought a troubled teen to the football coach at East Dillon High School.

He said the whole process took about three hours and was shot early in September and that the shooting time was only 30 minutes.

“My sister is a big fan of it so she watches it all the time,” Asomugha said. “I never really got into it. I saw a few episodes. I love the movie so I was familiar with it from that standpoint.”

– Gallery was leaving practice to pick up his wife at the hospital after the birth of their daughter Hayden on Monday. It is the couple’s first child.

– Wide receiver Shaun Bodiford (5-foot-11, 186 pounds, Portland State) was added to the practice squad while Brandon Rodd was cut. Bodiford has had short stays with Washington and Green Bay.

McFadden on field

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 at 11:21 am in Oakland Raiders.

Running back Darren McFadden and wide receiver Chaz Schilens went through warmups and drills as the Raiders began a brief bye week practice Wednesday, with both likely to have limited participation in team sessions.

Right tackle Cornell Green, meanwhile, was working on a separate field with a member of the athletic training staff. Those who were with the team but did not appear to be practicing were cornerback Chris Johnson (groin), defensive tackle Gerard Warren (foot) and tight end Tony Stewart (chest).

Linebacker Jon Alston, listed with concussions twice since Oct. 11, was suited up and working with special teams.

Defensive end Greg Ellis, scheduled for arthroscopic knee surgery this week, was not present, nor was wide reciever/return specialist Nick Miller. Also not present was punter Shane Lechler.

There was a new No. 10 on the field, a smallish wide receiver who could be an addition to the practice squad. Absent was guard Brandon Rodd, who is believed to have been released from the practice squad.

The head coach was Tom Cable.

What a disgraceful lot of limp wristed pole smokers.

That kind of thing has always bothered me all throughout the 90's up to now.

Hearing players say those things just makes this team seem soft.

Vince Lombardi would take a giant shit on half the players on this team.

Nov 5 2:22 ET Raiders LG Robert Gallery</a> on how coach Tom Cable has handled off-field controversy: "He loves football, and he really doesn't get fazed. Obviously, he's had his own issues, right or wrong. He's here to win games. He's doing everything in his power to help us win. He hasn't changed a bit. That's one thing I'll give him credit for."

Nov 5 2:13 ET Raiders DE Richard Seymour was excused from practice today, the team's final bye-week workout, coach Tom Cable said. Seymour was traded to the team from New England just days before the opener, and his family relocated to South Carolina. "He's with his family, which was planned with the transition."

Nov 5 1:57 ET Raiders starting LG Robert Gallery said "there's no doubt" he'll return to action next week against Kansas City. He's been out since breaking his left leg in Week 2 against the Chiefs. "I'm excited to get back out. You want to be out there with everybody, and hopefully we can get things going."

Nov 5 1:54 ET The National Organization for Women has called for Raiders coach Tom Cable to be suspended while the team investigates domestic violence allegations against him. Cable said he didn't think pressure from NOW would affect his future. "I think it will be handled properly. I'm going to leave it at that right now."

Nov 5 1:51 ET Starting Raiders RT Cornell Green(calf) will return to practice on Monday.

I'm just wondering what the Tuna would say if he was coaching this team. Cable is in a "no-win" situation, we all should know that by now. He's towing the company line, coddling Al's draft picks and has all this external crap hanging over him. He's been a good company man but he's in way over his head here. Not hiring a capable OC was his main downfall IMO, especially when you have young team like this. He's got enough shit on his plate without having to worry about calling the offensive plays.

The Tuna would have been smart enough to not put himself in the position of being another one of Al's puppets. I really think that when Chuckie began to be seen as the face of the Raiders, it really drove Al around the bend and he decided that he would never again hire a coach who might outshine him.

New father Gallery will give line boost

David White, Chronicle Staff Writer

Friday, November 6, 2009

"You want to be out there with everybody and, hopefully, we can get things going," Gallery said after practice Thursday, just before the team takes a three-day break on its bye weekend. "I've got another half a season to do what I want to do."

Of all the first-half injuries to the offense, Gallery's might have been the biggest hit in Week 2. The Raiders lost their best offensive lineman for six games, going 1-5 without the Pro Bowl candidate as the run game sunk to 25th in the NFL.

It also weakened the Raiders up the middle by moving starting center Chris Morris to left guard and backup center Samson Satele into the starting rotation.

"If it was one guy and you just plug a guy in, not so bad," Raiders coach Tom Cable said. "When you've got to change a couple of spots, then there's double the learning, double the changing going on.

"Getting him back kind of solidifies that side of the line of scrimmage, and then we'll get the other side straightened up here quick."

Right tackle Cornell Green is expected back next week. He missed four games with a calf injury. Wide receiver Chaz Schilens (foot) and running back Darren McFadden could also return.

The Raiders' offense - ranked 32nd in the NFL - needs all the help it can get.

"Get those guys back, and everybody's got to get refocused and go back at it," Gallery said.

Briefly: Defensive end Greg Ellis could return as soon as next week after having his knee cleaned out in arthroscopic surgery Wednesday. His procedure was less serious than McFadden's, who had his meniscus ligament repaired. ... Defensive end Richard Seymour was excused a day early to be with his family in South Carolina.

William Joseph - Joseph was with the team earlier this season

Aaron Wilson

The Oakland Raiders met with former defensive tackle William Joseph today, according to a league source.

He wasn't immediately signed.

Joseph was with the team earlier this season.

The former New York Giants player was drafted in the first round of the 2003 NFL draft out of the University of Miami.

Joseph earned a Super Bowl ring with the Giants after suffering a season-ending injury.

Joseph was re-signed by the Raiders last November after being cut in September of last year. He finished the season with eight tackles.

As a rookie after a holdout, Joseph signed a five-year, $6.95 million contract.

11/6/2009 - OVER AFGHANISTAN (AFNS) -- The quarterback was crouched in his uniform, scanning the field from under his helmet for his intended receivers. But this was no stadium; it was a C-17 Globemaster III flying over the harsh and dangerous terrain that is Afghanistan. And there was no football, but rather 18 much-needed bundles of food, water and supplies for troops at a forward operating base. The quarterback, in this case a loadmaster, found his targets. Touchdown!

Former Pittsburgh Steelers QB Terry Bradshaw would be proud, and he was. He was there watching the pass and reception on board the C-17.

Mr. Bradshaw and the rest of the team from "Fox NFL Sunday" is touring installations throughout Southwest Asia as part of an event with Armed Forces Entertainment. During the visit, they'll meet with deployed troops and sign autographs. The trip concludes with a two-hour broadcast of "Fox NFL Sunday" from Afghanistan Nov. 8.

Visiting the Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines are:

--Mr. Bradshaw, the Steelers quarterback from 1970 to 1983.
-- Jimmy Johnson, the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins coach from 1989 to 1999.
-- Howie Long, the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Raiders defensive end from 1981 to 1993.
-- Michael Strahan, the New York Giants defensive end from 1993 to 2007.
-- Curt Menefee, a sportscaster.
-- Jay Glazer, a sportswriter.

To get to Afghanistan, the NFL legends tagged along on an airdrop mission. For the aircrew, it was the chance of a lifetime to meet several NFL legends, but also an opportunity to showcase the efforts of the Air Force supporting the joint fight.

"Terry Bradshaw is a hero of mine and to be able to show him what the Air Force does is really awesome," said Staff Sgt. Matthew Gaffney, an instructor loadmaster with the 816th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron. "It's great to show them how we can take pretty much anything and drop it wherever we want."

Seeing the mission up close and personal brought a new sense of appreciation for today's military, something every American should be reminded of, Mr. Long said.

"When you're on a trip like this, you truly get to see how remarkable this generation of Americans is," he said.

Toward the end of the mission, the aircrew presented an American flag, along with a certificate, to the football legends to thank them for visiting the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines.

In December 2000, "Fox NFL Sunday" broadcast two shows from the flight deck of the USS Harry S. Truman, during a patrol in the Mediterranean Sea. Armed Forces Entertainment is the lead Department of Defense agency for bringing entertainment to servicemembers overseas.

I never got near any action during my service, due to the fact that I joined at the tail end of the first Gulf War. I also never did my tour on a boat, due to the fact that my knees got torn up while serving as Naval Police. I missed out on plenty, which was both good and bad for me in my life.
