View Full Version : Erosion of Hope

An old coach of mine once told us, the greatness of life was that, like in sports, you live to fight another day; the key was to never give up.

That message stayed with me throughout the rest of my life, and it applied to everything in my life—my career, my marriage, my family. Through good and bad, fighting on, not just hoping but believing that things would ultimately get better.

However, in times when economic stability is an illusion and our country is torn apart by ideologues that are rampantly trying to divide us, it almost seems petty that I'm focusing on the Oakland Raiders. Their success—or lack thereof—has nothing to do with whether I will have enough money to put food on the table for my family, or if we'll have a roof over my head next month.

But if football was simply a "distraction," a casual pastime, I doubt I would have the initiative to sit here writing about something that in actuality is very personal and long been a part of my life.

I've been following the Raiders since I was five years old; I'm 31 now, so do the math. I'm not saying that its a justification or vindication that I'm an "expert" on the Raiders, because I'm not. I'm just saying I grew up as a Raider fan.

Year after year, (from Marc Wilson, Marinovich, Schroeder to Gannon, stomaching the 51-3 thrashing at the hands of the Bills, or watching the Raiders smack the Broncos 42-24 at the Coliseum in '93), good or bad, it wasn't a dilemma whether I was going to watch/listen to the games; there was a sense of pride in being a Raider fan. The Raiders had their ups and downs, but, through it all—even through their Mike White days or the Joe Bugel disaster—there was mediocrity, but it always felt like it was circumstantial. It never felt like it was a way of life in Oakland.

The Gruden days have been my only true peek at what it must have been like to have been around as a Raider fan during the Lamonica days. The days when "commitment to excellence" meant something, a time when players came to the Raiders because of the honor of being a Raider.

I don't need to rehash the details of what's gone wrong with the Raiders in the last six years—the consistent loses, the poor managerial decisions, the wasted talent...it's all there for anyone that really takes a good hard look at it.
I'm just tired. Tired of watching the team I grew up idolizing turn into a permanent circus with no real end in sight.

I have to admire the blind conviction some have; some guy wrote an article about how we have to give JaMarcus Russell and Tom Cable time to sort things out and develop into a winning team.

I understand the guy's need to grasp onto something, to keep hope; after all, if you don't support the Raiders, then you're not really a fan, right?

I stood by as Al Davis passed on Ben Roethlisberger, Jay Cutler, Adrian Peterson, and Joe Flacco, just to name a few. As he signed DeAngelo Hall and then let him go, or signed Javon Walker, drafting Darrius Heyward-Bey at the seventh slot, hiring a coach that has heart but no brains, right after firing one that had no heart or brain.

In the last six years, despite the coaching changes, the rotating roster, the one consistent is Davis. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the clump of hair is clogging your sink.

As long as Davis runs the team, things will be done his way. He'll draft the fastest guy in the draft or the one who has the the strongest arm. He'll continue to hire coaches that will work for him because no one else will hire them, an continue to keep players around because he believes in loyalty, even if that loyalty is only to him and not necessarily to the team.

I can't continue to invest my time, my money, my energy into a team I no longer believe in. Even last year when the team went 5-11, I was looking forward to the draft, hoping that maybe—just maybe—Darren McFadden would finally come into form, Russell would finally get his first full season, and the Raiders would draft a significant player.

I remember watching Lombardi during pre-draft analysis, and he predicted that the Raiders would take Heyward-Bey at the seventh pot.

I can still feel that anger I felt, thinking that the mainstream media has a bias against the Raiders and that there was no way that Davis would draft this guy just because he ran a sizzling 40. With so much talent available, I felt that the pundits gave Davis no credit and pegged him with the same old stereotype.

When they called Heyward-Bey for the Raiders at No. 7, for me that was the beginning of the end...

I used to hold on to hope that even if we had a lousy season, we'd at least get a really good pick. But after six years of great slots at the draft and walking away with NOTHING...it's not even worth stomaching this season when I know next year, when other teams snap up Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow, and Taylor Mays, the Raiders will sign the fastest player or strongest arm, regardless of whether it's warranted or not. What Al wants, Al gets.

Don't get me wrong, as I said before, he has every right to do what he wants, and I know he also has an image to maintain, to be "the Maverick" of the Raiders, but I'm just one fan, a simple speck in the vast (albeit dwindling) Raider Nation, but to continue to do things your way especially when it does not include winning, well that just does not work with and is a contridiction to the principles of “Just Win Baby”, and “Commitment to Excellence”.

I'm just saying that, after 26 years of following the Raiders, it pains me to say I just don't have the stomach for this anymore.

Maybe it's an age thing, or maybe it's having to choose whether I'll spend the $200 to go to the Raider game or buy a new pair of shoes. Or it could be deciding whether to spend Sunday morning watching the Raider game when I could be spending quality time with my family.

Being a fan—a real fan—requires sacrifice, investing time and money. Ask yourself: Is the time and money that you're putting into this team under this direction really worth it? A lot of us keep doing it out of loyalty—a blind loyalty that, sooner or later, the Raiders will turn it around, and when they do, I won't feel like those millions of Waggoner’s that jumped ship when the water is warm.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not going to bail because we're losing; I've been a fan since '83, I've lived through my share of losing seasons, bad picks, incompetent management, and still I've been a fan. It's more than that. It's the complete destruction of this once proud franchise, both in its reputation and in its history, with nothing on the horizon that inspires any hope .

As long as Davis keeps calling the shots, especially in regards to football operations, the change that is needed for this organization to succeed in this day-and-age will not come.

I'm not advocating that you boycott the team or am implying that you should stop watching the Raiders altogether; I'm just sharing a perspective from a fan that’s been there for a long time but can't do it anymore. Not like this.

That hits home. (Next time, use some returns, though. :p )

Been on board since 1997, when I was 12.

I still watch the games... at least, until they cease being competitive. I work two jobs, about 60 hours a week, so I've got waaaay better things to do with the scarce free time I have than watch efforts like the one at the Meadowlands last week.

The most telling thing about it is, it's like someone here said not too long ago: If the players don't care — why should I? It really doesn't get any more simple than that.

When I tune into the games now, I don't even think about wins, or the playoff race, or the overall structure of the team, or anything. I am reduced to merely being curious if one of the young players can make a positive play or two and keep the score close.

After things get out of hand, I go about my day and find better things to do. I don't know about a boycott, but I don't emotionally nor financially support so many players who quite clearly simply don't care how they play.

The fans have sat her for years on end armchair quarterbacking this team's problems more acutely than the Raiders' ownership has been able to. We sit here year-in, year-out, wasting time tabulating lists and rankings of linemen, of glue players, of emotional leaders, fundamentally sound winners, only to watch all of that sensical philosophy be completely disregarded for the amalgamation of 40-yard dash stars, wobbly hail-mary chuckers, tweeners with no discernable pro positions and so forth — none of whom seem to really care about winning.

Who else would have given that much money to Javon Walker? Tommy Kelly? DeAngelo Hall, for just a few games?

These are decisions that Joe Nobody on the street would be able to negotiate with more common sense.

Until that changes, I'll be doing the same, and perhaps rooting for another team like the Jaguars to move to L.A.

Excellent post.

I still watch.

I just don't care as much anymore. I don't get emotional or angry. I used to pout all week when we lost, or brag when we won. I'd post here all game long, and during the week, scope the stats and matchups, the coaching tendencies, injury reports etc.

Now I hope we stay competitive. I hope we don't embarrass ourselves in the media each week.

Its sad what we've become, but you learn to deal.

I've tried in recent weeks to find myself a "second favorite team," a more competitive franchise that I can root for and identify with, and ended up with the same result I had back in 06: nada. When Al finally does croak, I shudder to think how homogenous "My Team" might become, even if it means a return to success. I don't think victories will taste as sweet if we're just like the rest of the pokey-ass NFL.

We're the terribly unique fans of a terribly unique team. Nobody wins like the Raiders -- and fer better or god damned worse, nobody loses like em, either.

I've become very indifferent after enduring this shit for the past 6-7 years. Gotten so used to the losing and the circus that we've perpetuated in Oakland that I've pretty much detached myself emotionally from this team. I thought maybe we had turned the proverbial corner after our MNF loss to SD only to revert back to that ugly brand of football we've gotten so accustomed to seeing in recent years.

Team is an absolute mess and in dissarray right now. No defined leadership from the front office or on the field. Is it even too much to ask for a team to at least be competitive on Sunday afternoons? I'm not asking for 8-8, just make it interesting and keep the game close.

I'll probably try to endure the first half of this game via stream today but most likely, the game will be well in hand before half time.:shakehead:

Looks like I might be the "senior" fan here since I remember how bad the Raiders were back in the early 60's. We had 2 QB's that got interchanged with regularity, Cotton Davidson and Tom Flores. It was bleak and there was no guarantee that there would even be a "Raiders" next year.

That was the beginning of the Al Davis Era.

What you are witnessing now is the end of that era. My form of protest was to cancel NFL ticket. No point in watching this. It's like watching King Kong for the 35th time. You know that monkey is gonna fall off that building in the end.

Old age and dementia are what beats the Raiders every week, but after 48+ years, I got no other ship to jump to. If we can manage to beat the Redskins I'll be left alone by their fans, who surround me, for another 4 years. I don't even entertain the idea that we will beat anyone else. Not with the 1967 playbook, and 43 out of 53 players who don't care.

Thank God for College football.

I thought maybe we had turned the proverbial corner after our MNF loss to SD....How ironic. Raider fan thinks we "turned the corner" after a LOSS.

Jeez. We've hit rock bottom. Wait, I thought that same thing 4 years go. We're not at the bottom yet I'm afraid.

Much like the economy we won't know where the "true rock bottom" is until we are actually out of it.Whenever that happens to happen who knows ?

hit rock bottom?!? Hell, we've been stuck at rock bottom for years. Well at least we had Gruden to bring some sanity to the organization for a while... Until a change is made at the top, we will be stuck to the ocean floor.

Been a fan since the 1973 season at age 9...I knew things were going to crash when Al fired Callahan and hired Norv...that was the signal that just win baby became just play my way...
Thought Kiffin was on the right track and very disappointed when both he and Al acted like ass holes...I think Cable is ok as HC but wish he'd hire a full OC after Knapp left...

I thought we'd win 9 games until the game in Preseason with Saints...I'm stunned Russell was allowed to have DHB and Murphy as his starting WR's. We should have JLH, Walker or a veteran in the lineup

Anybody know if the Raiders still put up those ridiculous signs at the stadium these day?

'Ya know "Commitment to Excellence" and "Pride and Poise".

Embarrassing if they do.

Hell, even the disaster that was the 1997 Team was competitively bad.

We lost a bunch of close games that year. Jeff George actually put up some tremendous stats. I think 29 TD's & 9 INT's.

Haha, yup... I remember that year well. Napoleon Kaufman's best... freaking, even James Jett had 12 TDs... I think Tim Brown led the league with 104 catches...

At the time, my brother had a Jeff George t-shirt... not a jersey, but some fan t-shirt thing with him and other Raiders on it... I still remember, a year or two after that, he was wearing it in an airport and some guy walked past and said to his friend after they passed us, "Holy shit!!! Did you guys just see that?!!? That guy was wearing a Jeff George shirt!!!!"

Classic.

Jeff George didn't like getting hit and was not a "leader", but he looks All-World compared to our current situation at QB.

you are totally kidding yourself! the last time we were any good we looked a lot like the rest of the nfl. I think the fans would be unique with a different owner.
