Known for his intense work ethic and aptitude in breaking down opponents’ tendencies, Hanson was a highly regarded offensive assistant during a three-year stint with the Minnesota Vikings from 2003 to 2005.

“Randy Hanson’s a great coach,” said former Vikings center Matt Birk(notes), a perennial Pro Bowl selection now with the Baltimore Ravens. “He would break down opposing defenses for us, and he was outstanding. He’s an extremely hard worker. That used to be the joke – he never stopped. He’d sleep in the office and watch every bit of tape he could find.”

Added former Vikings quarterback Brad Johnson(notes): “I really enjoyed being around him. He brought a lot of flavor to the room and to the field, and I thought he had a lot of insights into game plans.”

Rams-coach Scott Linehan was aware of his devotion to the Raiders. In Oakland, he worked as an assistant secondary coach in charge of third-down defenses and impressed his fellow coaches with his knowledge of opposing offenses and his ability to convey his insights to the players.

“He knows what the opposing team’s gonna do before they know what they’re gonna do,” said one former Raiders assistant who worked closely with Hanson. “That’s how much tape he watches. And he’s a damn good football coach, too.”
the coach apparently wowed the owner with his grasp of football and with his knowledge of Raiders history.

We met for more than two-and-a-half hours,” Hanson recalled. “At the start of the meeting, he said, ‘I know you’re a hard worker and you love the Raiders, but I don’t know what you do that helps this football team. I do not know if you can coach or not.’ By the end he had given me a raise and told me he wanted me to stay on as ‘assistant coach-defense.’ My role would be to teach the new defensive coaches what we did on defense last year so they’ll know some of the things I like. He also said he wanted to groom me on the personnel side. He said he wanted me to play an important role in the future of the organization.”

Shortly before training camp, Davis grilled Marshall, the team’s new defensive coordinator, during a meeting. As Marshall struggled to answer a question from the owner, Hanson assisted the veteran coach by giving hand signals from the back of the room. Cable, Hanson said, seemed to have been angered by his actions.

"We had changed the blitz package two or three times over a short period, and everybody was really confused and frustrated,” Hanson said. “We ended up changing it a fourth time – back to the way it was in OTAs (organized team activities) – and one of the players said in a meeting, ‘This is confusing.’ I said, ‘You guys are [f——-] right – we’re all confused, and that includes the coaches. We’ve got to get on the same page. Don’t worry. We’ll get it right.’ ”

Yet despite his frustration, Hanson has remained loyal to the organization. Late last month McGuinn, his attorney, told NFL.com that several Raiders players had solicited Hanson’s input about upcoming opponents, with one even giving him a team laptop that used to belong to Brown. “Al Davis doesn’t know [Hanson has] been providing detailed coaching for these guys, and Randy has not gotten any credit for it,” McGuinn told the league’s website.

A source said one Raiders assistant has also reached out to Hanson in recent weeks. Hanson declined to comment about any help he might have provided to players or others in the organization since he was barred from visiting the team’s facility.

Question: If Hanson is such a great coach why has he never had a HC gig or even been considered as far as I know?

More of the same from the Raiders if they hire him. It's clear to me though that Cable won't be around next season. Dude is completely over matched and a Davis puppet. At least he's good at something.

``We're close"... Fuck you Cable.

Randy Hanson will be HC in 2010

Fuck it. Give him a shot.

What difference does it make now anyway? Cable's going to be the fall guy this go-around and somebody's gotta be the coach.

Let's see if a guy working 27 hours a day can get this team to 6-10.

Coach Hansen -- "I'M IN" -- Just for shits and grins.

He does sound a little Gruden-esque, but does he have a good sneer?

This won't happen as long as Al is alive, but what if...

Al brought in the Spitter and told him..."here's 5-million. It's your team, your coaches, your GM, and your players. All I am to you is someone who writes the checks. Bring this organization back and I'll pay you a king's ransome. Make the playoffs and I'll pay you another 5-million. Win a superbowl and I'll kick in another 10-million. Any questions"?

One can dream...

Hanson? The answer is... NO.

Can you dig up any references from a pro bowl player and coaches in the NFL that gave the green light to Cable?

A guy who has never been more than the assistant to a position coach and has numerous run ins with people higher up on the food chain?...

Sounds about par for the Al Davis course...

If Cable get's clipped, the choice is actually obvious... I think Al will bring back Rob Ryan thinking he'll provide the same kind of presence and fire his brother is currently showing in NY...

.

What "numerous" run ins are you referring to?

So far the guy gets praised from a future HOF center and a SB winning QB and NFL coaches along with current Raider assistants, not to mention players on this team are still reaching out to the guy.

Other than a coach "threatened" by another coach that knows more about football than himself and actually speaks out about the collection of absolute smelly ass we got coaching this team, what other run ins has the guy had?

Because he's smaller than Cable - its the only reason this fat fuck decides to charge him becaue he calls out that fuckin loser Marshall?

Marshall, a guy that goes stupid on test day and Hanson has to give him hand signals so he doesnt look stupid?

Sorry - But I gotta side with Hanson on this one

He's got the backing of great players - who by the way went on record as opposed to a OL coach that aint got enough sense to come in out the rain

I'd like to know these "numerous" run ins he's had?

Lane Kiffin?

Hey man?

Maybe just maybe, the guy is tired of this fuckin shit like we are and questions a coach who by the way.....

Was fired

Just saying

I know nothing about the guy - But the words from pro bowl players and NFL coaches that talk about his skills reading offenses, how he studies film late in the night and has assistant coaches and players asking him for tips

I'll taKe the dude -

I don't pretend to know anything about Hanson... I'm just not willing to jump on the bandwagon of a guy that hasn't even been a position coach yet... Let's not forget that Cable was EVERYBODY's favorite assistant at one time as well... He was very well liked when he was coaching the O-line and now he's Curly the Stooge as a head coach... It's always easier being the guy not in the position of ultimate responsibility, even easier if you are the assistant to the assistant... Hanson may be greatness in waiting, but people pulled quotes when Kiffin and Cable were hired... Hell, Norv had how many Hall of Famers gushing about him?...

What "numerous" run ins are you referring to?

Sheesh, two then... Kiffin last year and then Cable this year... Cable didn't even want to bring him back because he was said to be Al's ears in the locker room... I question Cable's abilities running an offense, but I certainly think he's a man of integrity... Hanson may have great potential, I don't know, but there's not a whole lot of body of work as an actual coach to make a real case... I hadn't even heard of him prior to this... A lot of what's being said sounds real good, but there are red flags IMO, starting as to whether he is one of Al's sycophant lap dogs to whether he's a guy that tends to undermine other coaches to make himself look better...

I second that...

Sheesh, two then... Kiffin last year and then Cable this year... ...

Call me dumbfounded

But I see alot of us in Hanson - The guy's not 21 years old, he's 10 years older than Gruden was when he was hired - Cat looks dumb as all fuck - But I'll give the dude the benefit of the doubt--- and ya know? Al Davis dont fuck around--- and I gotta give the old man props to keep the kid

When you got Matt Birk and Brad Johnson and Linehan and a bunch of credited people praise his work ethic then gimmie that shit

I've said it till I been blue in the face

And this has always been the Raiders problem the last 7 years

We simply DO NOT take advantage of any opportunities

What I mean by that is that we dont line up players in position to score- Our motto is simply to lineup- a Jr High School coach knows its a run play

This is why we lose

Cable is like a bad guitarists - has all the equipment his parents bought him, the hair, the looks--- but basically sucks dick

I gotta ask ya HB

When was the last time Cable lined up 3 WR's to one side and called a bubble screen?

May I ask you why the 2 WR set on every play the last 5 games?

I'll save you the answer -

Cables way outta his league

He's not a HC - He sucks ass calling plays

What this team needs is a young Gruden part 2 type coach that is innovated, and can put this team in a position to win

Tom Cable has NO business being a HC- more less being the OC

Call me crazy- but I'd give Hanson a shot, because he's a film room junkie

I'm confused.... It seems like my lack of endorsement for Hanson as Head coach is an endorsement for Cable's abilities to call an offense... If you look back, I was one of the more outspoken against Tom Cable being both head coach and offensive coordinator... My posts over the years are littered with endorsements for Ken Zampese and Doug Marrone among others as OC... I was all for bringing in Aaron Kromer or even Marc Trestman to be OC... I was fine with giving Cable or Ryan a shot as HC as long as you put a quality OC by their side... They both had the temperament to be lead a team and work under the many demands of Al Davis...

None of that has anything to do with Hanson unless you want to let Hanson design an offense and call plays... My point was that Hanson hasn't even been in charge of a position group yet... We have no idea whether he has the ability to organize and lead men, much less design or call an offense...

Sure, Hanson is the answer. Unfortunately, the question is... Who is a coach that can lead us to another 7 years of losing?

I think broke jaw would be a hell of a pick for HC... The ultimate puppet. I'll sure look forward to the day the entire team goes bumaya on that narc....

Rep, pretty good analogy 34. Can we just get a real fuggin HC in here at some point? Is that even a viable option?

CrossBones

We could get a real HC in here if Al would turn everything over to a GM who would have full control. Full control.

Stop dreaming.

There is no Real HC that will be willing to come here, Not Cowher Not Gruden, Not Dungy....When will be good, not sure but it's not this year. I Love some of the talent this team has, but until Al figures out that O-line is a major problem and he needs to step back and give someone control it's gonna be bad...sadly.
