Niners Strike Deal For Santa Clara Stadium
Posted by Mike Florio on May 30, 2009, 12:07 a.m.

The San Francisco 49ers and officials in Santa Clara have struck a tentative deal for a $937 million stadium.

A term sheet between the team and the city was revealed on Friday, via a press release. Per a league source, 49ers president Jed York will meet with club employees on Tuesday, June 2 to discuss the specifics of the project.

Also, the Santa Clara City Council will meet on Tuesday, June 2 for a vote on whether to approve the term sheet. If approved, a time line will be established for a public election as to whether the project should proceed.

The project entails a fixed maximum contribution from Santa Clara in the amount of $79 million, supposedly with no cost to taxpayers and no risk to the city’s general fund. The balance of the money will come from the 49ers, the NFL, and revenue projects such as the sale of naming rights.

[B]According to the San Jose Mercury News, the Raiders possibly could be tenants of the new stadium:D

I think a stadium sharing situation like the Jets and Giants have would most likely be the best solution especially in these economic climes.

that would be cool. I think the Raiders are going to get a new stadium either way- in Los Angeles.

Regardless of economy, think about the cost (almost a billion large), and the number of guaranteed events for one team (10). Unless you get a LOT of other events that fucker is going to lose money most of the time.

I don't see this as necessarily good news. The Coliseum is a lacking in amenities and not in the best of shape, but it's exclusively the home of the Raiders -- and that means something. Really hard to imagine Al Davis -- or Amy Trask -- thinking the sharing of a stdium and facilities with the Niners is a highly desirable situation.

Al's lease is up, I think, in 2010 (2011). He'll play Santa Clara against Oakland, both against Los Angeles, and even San Diego if the Charges cut a deal with LA first. Al has options. According to this guy (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/lieberman/detail?entry_id=40888), Oakland and Al should agree to a renovated Coliseum.

Personally, I'd have no problem with a shared Stadium, provided it was not called 49er Stadium, the way the Jets play (sub-let) in the Giants Stadium.

Al has no leverage in Southern California. Not a single penny of taxpayer money will go to subsidizing anything related to a new stadium or anything related to upgrading an existing stadium in the LA area. Al could theoretically go after private money, but nobody's gonna give up that kind of coin to jump in bed with a guy who is hell bent on maintaining complete control over everything. San Diego already has a team and won't budge for another. Al can posture all he wants about moving in with the Niners.... but the chances of that happening are as likely as the Raiders and Broncos sharing a stadium. Until Al shows he can build a winner, he's gonna have an uphill battle trying to get money out of Oakland.... or anybody for that matter.

You figure that the new stadium won't be ready for at least a year or two, which would be right around the time the Raiders current lease is up. They could share the stadium with the Niners for 4-5 years and try to get Oakland to build a new stadium in place of the current one. If the majority of the Santa Clara stadium is being funded by outside sources and the Raiders are still getting a percentage of the profits, they save money overall and can use some of that money to go towards the stadium in Oakland.

With all the encomoci issues facing the country not to mention the City of Oakland I don't see any way they throw 1/2 a billion dollars or more at a football stadium.

I've always thought that somehow Al will get a stadium built for him in Los Angeles and get the hell out of town once and for all. Makes no difference to me. I just don't see Al going down the "renovate the old dog" path again. And the City of Oakland just can't do such a thing. Doesn't seem fiscally responsible.

Let's see...buy a ticket to Oakland or Los Angeles. Six and one, half dozen and another to me. Just win baby. Ever since I moved from the Bay Area it just doesn't matter. In fact I went to quite a few games in Los Angeles and thought it was just fine. Wait...we had half decent teams in those days. I'll still never forgive Marcus for that fumble against the Jets in the playoff game. I was there and I was pissed! Made for a long trip home. And FTR the Coliseum is a dump.

the raiders need to jump in on this deal and share the stadium, even if it is only for a few years

economically, it makes perfect sense. Both teams want a new stadium, both teams would only have to put in half of what they normally would.Santa Clara is easily accessible from San Fran or the East Bay, so it even makes sense geographically.

Keep the headquarters in alameda, leave the coliseum to the A's and let Lew Wolf renovate it, and then move back in when Wolf moves the team (which sadly, im sure he will do in the next few years)
