View Full Version : Keeping track of the draft rankings:

I've been thinking about the need for a thread like this. I am going to keep as much of the top 100 lists, mock drafts, and underrated/overrated lists as I can from the major draft sites, and draftniks.

I am really not concerned who has the most accurate mock, or who gets the most correct out of their top 100. We have the Huddle Report to keep track of that.

No, what I am more interested in is where these guys differ from the norm, which players they call out as busts, and who they really like more than most. Like Mayock and Ayers this year, or Ryan last year. People have short memories with this stuff. For example, anyone else remember how much Todd McShay was blowing John Beck a while back? If a guy like Mayock turns out to really know his shit about a certain position, I am going to give his opinion a bit more weight.

I don't think enough of these guys get their feet put to the fire, and held accountable for the really bad calls they make. And the funny thing is, a lot of these guys don't have previous years info available.

So, anyway:

If anyone wants to add a list or anything, that's cool. Top 100 lists, overrated/underrated, even positional rankings is cool. What I am really looking for are the kind of opinions that separate these draftniks from the pack. If Scott Wright thinks that DHB will be the best WR in the draft, I wanna put it in here. Links are cool, but I'd like the cut-n-paste, as this stuff tends to disappear. I'll probably add a post per draftnik, and add to it as I come across stuff. Basically, if anyone is putting themselves out tehre as an expert, and has rankings, I want that info.

Also, if anyone thinks someone should be included as well, let me know. I will probably start with:

Kiper---Any ESPN Insiders get me his big board, etc.?
McShay
Mayock
Gil Brandt
Scott Wright
NFL Draft Scout
Walter Football

I will look and see what I can get from Great Blue North, Russ Lande, etc.

Wes Bunting All-Bust Team and All-Favorites (This is exactly the kind of shit I want in here)

All-Favorites Team

QB Stephen McGee, Texas A&M (6-3, 225)

It was an absolute crime that McGee didn’t get more playing time last season at Texas A&M. However, with a couple of years of development, I expect him to be competing for a starting role in the NFL.

RB Shonn Greene, Iowa (5-11, 227)

I know Greene isn’t burner, but I love his vision, power and body control at the line of scrimmage. He does a great job picking up yards after contact and is like trying to tackle a refrigerator in the open field.

FB Marcus Mailei, Weber State (6-0, 248)

A nasty in-line blocker who has the size, power and aggressive nature to make an impact as a lead blocker in the run game.

WR Mike Wallace, Mississippi (6-1, 199)

If I had to settle on a vertical threat in this year’s draft, it would easily be Wallace. He caught fire toward the end of the year and has the ability to consistently make plays down the field. He’s still developing as a route runner, but he was more productive and is more polished than the draft’s “top” vertical threat, Darrius Heyward-Bey.

TE John Phillips, Virginia (6-6, 251)

Phillips isn’t going to wow you in any area of his game, but as a mid-round pick he will definitely help out in both the run and pass game. He’s the type of prospect who will contribute from day one and play 10 years in the NFL.

OT Xavier Fulton, Illinois (6-4, 302)

Fulton has only played on the offensive line for two years and still needs to work his technique and upper body strength. But he’s a gifted natural athlete whom I can see excelling in a zone-blocking scheme, either at the tackle or guard spot.

OG T.J. Lang, Eastern Michigan (6-4, 316)

Lang caught my eye at the Texas vs. the Nation Bowl, and I’ve been moving him up my draft boards ever since. The former left tackle possesses rare feet for the guard position but also displays the base strength to hold up against the bull rush inside.

C Alex Fletcher, Stanford (6-2, 297)

Fletcher is not only a smart and instinctive lineman, he also has the versatility to play either center or guard at the next level. Someone with his work ethic, drive and determination will find a way to make it in the NFL.

DE Everette Pedescleaux, Northern Iowa (6-6, 305)

I don’t know what the love affair is with all these undersized defensive ends, but I like my DEs big. Pedescleaux is an angular, small school guy with the ability to play DE in a 3-4 or kick inside as the three-technique in a 4-3. He has some developing to do, but the athletic and physical skill sets are there.

DT Mitch King, Iowa (6-2, 280)

Sure, King is undersized, has short arms and lacks much growth potential, but he consistently finds ways to make plays on game day. He possesses great instincts and technique and knows how to beat blocks inside. King is a bit scheme-limited, but he can really do some damage when asked to shoot gaps and penetrate.

LB Kaluka Maiava, USC (6-0, 299)

Maiava, the unsung linebacker on the USC roster, played behind three potential first-round picks in 2008, but he’s a very good prospect in his own right. He is tough as nails and plays with reckless abandon at the line of scrimmage. I not only expect him to develop into a starter at the next level, I also think he has a chance to have a more successful career than one of his more heralded linebacker teammates.

CB Coye Francies, San Jose State (6-1, 185)

I don’t think there was a cornerback at the 2009 Senior Bowl who displayed Francies’ ability to consistently close on the ball in man coverage. He’s a bit raw with his footwork and didn’t time as well as he wanted at the NFL Combine (4.63). However, he has the length, flexibility and burst to get out of his breaks and consistently jump routes.

S Sherrod Martin, Troy (6-1, 198)

Martin is one of the most fluid defensive backs in this year’s draft class and has the ability to play both free safety and cornerback. I love his toughness and versatility, and I think he has the makings of a ball-hawking safety in the NFL.

My All-Bust Team

QB Josh Freeman, Kansas State (6-6, 248)

I love his arm, but he’s a raw passer who lacks ideal accuracy and timing on all areas of the field. Plus, he completed only 58.6 percent of his passes in the Big 12 this past year, which doesn’t bode well for his completion percentage at the next level.

RB LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh (5-11, 204)

I worry about his instincts, vision and toughness between the tackles; he doesn’t seem to like contact and is consistently content to run out of bounds. Not my kind of back.

FB Marquez Branson, Central Arkansas (6-2, 260)

A former small-school tight end who displays good coordination in the pass game, but I don’t think he has the toughness to make it as a starting fullback in the NFL.

WR Darrius Heyward-Bey, Maryland (6-2, 210)

Sure, his physical attributes are impressive, but Heyward-Bey struggles running routes and was never real productive at the college level. I see a lot of Troy Williamson and Ashley Lelie in him.

TE Jared Cook, South Carolina (6-5, 246)

Cook is an intriguing pass catcher who possesses rare straight-line speed and explosion for the position. But I worry about his instincts in the pass game and think he could struggle reading defenses and getting open consistently in the NFL.

OT Troy Kropog, Tulane (6-6, 309)

Kropog’s struggles at this year’s Senior Bowl only foreshadow potential struggles in the pros. He’s a decent athlete but was consistently exposed when asked to make any kind of jump in competition this past year.

OG Kraig Urbik, Wisconsin (6-5, 328)

Urbik is a big, long-armed kid with good power in his upper body, but he struggles moving his feet when he engages on contact. He had the upper body strength to hold off defensive tackles in the college game, but I don’t think that will be the case in the pros.

C Jonathan Luigs, Arkansas (6-4, 301)

This was a tough one because I think Luigs has the ability to be a solid player in a zone-blocking scheme. However, if he’s asked to consistently handle big defensive tackles one on one inside, I think he’ll struggle at the next level.

DE Brian Orakpo, Texas (6-3, 263)

I may have a slight bias against Texas players, but when was the last time a Texas product was taken in the top 10 and actually lived up to expectations? Orakpo isn’t as fluid or physical as his numbers indicate, and I don’t think he has the first step to consistently reach the corner in the pro game.

DT Ricky Jean-Francois, LSU (6-3, 295)

I absolutely hate defensive linemen who take plays off and disappear from games during critical stretches, which is what Jean-Francois did last season. He possesses big-time talent, which he displayed in the 2008 National Championship, but I want my defensive linemen playing with a consistent motor, and Jean-Francois didn’t.

LB Cody Brown, Connecticut (6-2, 244)

Brown was very productive this past year, but I don’t think he has the burst or strength to consistently fire off the snap and shed bocks. He isn’t a natural bender, and I see him struggling at both DE and OLB in the NFL.

CB Vontae Davis, Illinois (5-11, 203)

The skill set is there, although I worry about Davis’ willingness to do the work once he finds out everyone is just as talented as he is at the next level. He’s raw and lacks ideal footwork when asked to turn and run. Much like his older brother, 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, I can see Vontae also failing to live up to the hype.

SS Michael Hamlin, Clemson (6-2, 214)

If there’s one thing I dislike, it’s leggy safeties who struggle transitioning out of their breaks. Hamlin possesses good size, but he isn’t much of a hitter, doesn’t run well and struggles changing directions in space. All that adds up to a prospect I wouldn’t touch come draft day.

Bucky Brooks list of overrated and underrated:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d80fe7aa9&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true

Overvalued

Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State: The former Wildcat has tantalized scouts with his outstanding physical tools. As a strong-armed pocket passer, Freeman has the ability to make all of the throws required in a pro offense. However, his accuracy is inconsistent and he has been plagued by the turnover bug throughout his career (34 career interceptions). Furthermore, Freeman compiled a 14-18 record in 32 career starts, and didn't raise the level of his teammates' play with his leadership skills. Although his physical gifts warrant a first-round grade, he enters the league as a high risk/high reward prospect based on his play at Kansas State.

Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland: The speedster has shot up draft boards after clocking the fastest 40-time (4.30) at the combine. But teams should be wary of drafting Heyward-Bey with the expectation of the former Terrapin developing into a No. 1 receiver. Heyward-Bey is strictly a vertical route runner who excels as a deep threat in the passing game. While his speed is a coveted asset, Heyward-Bey has the potential to flame out in an offensive system that doesn't suit his skill set.

Clay Matthews, OLB, Southern California: The former walk-on has turned a productive senior season into a potential first-round selection. Matthews has captivated scouts with his relentless motor, versatility and special teams ability. However, he is a one-year starter who played on a star-studded defense at USC. There is some skepticism about whether the overachiever can duplicate his senior production (4.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries) on the next level.

Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee: The Vols' 2008 sack leader has ascended up draft boards after an impressive showing as a senior. Ayers displayed surprising quickness and athleticism while crashing off the edge. With his size and speed, scouts view him as a legitimate edge player in a 4-3. However, Ayers' dismal production during his first three seasons in Knoxville makes him worthy of carrying the "one-year wonder" tag.

Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss: The former Rebel is expected to come off the board within the top fifteen selections due to his potential to develop into a franchise left tackle. Oher's length and athleticism entices scouts, but many worry about his about his lack of strength and lateral movement skills. He is not as smooth as the top tier of tackles (Baylor's Jason Smith, Virginia's Eugene Monroe and Alabama's Andre Smith), and could struggle against elite pass rushers on Sundays. Though Oher is worthy of first-round consideration, he may never live up to the hype of his draft status.

Undervalued

Connor Barwin, DE/OLB, Cincinnati: The Big East sack leader is a versatile athlete with outstanding movement skills. Though he spent only one season at defensive end, Barwin shows a natural feel for rushing off the edge and flashes an exceptional closing burst while chasing quarterbacks. As a former two-sport athlete with experience at multiple positions (he spent his first three seasons at tight end), Barwin has the potential to be a dynamic player as a pro.

Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut: The underappreciated runner from Connecticut has flown under the radar, despite rushing for 2,083 yards as a junior. As an elusive runner with exceptional balance and burst, Brown has a knack for finding creases in the middle of the defense. Though he lacks the prototypical size to be a feature back, he has all of the tools to be a productive workhorse on the next level.

Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia: The former Cavalier enters the league as an experienced veteran of the 3-4. While Sintim lacks the sizzle of other rush linebackers on the board, he quietly tallied 11 sacks during his senior season, and possesses the kind of versatility to be an effective outside 3-4 linebacker in a hybrid scheme. With 48 starts in Al Groh's 3-4, Sintim is the most "pro-ready" hybrid prospect on the board.

Jamon Meredith, OG/OT, South Carolina: Scouts laud the former Gamecock for his football IQ and multi-position flexibility. Meredith has effectively manned both tackle spots and the left guard position during his tenure at South Carolina. As a "jack of all trades" with superior instincts, intelligence and awareness, Meredith is poised to enjoy a solid pro career at guard or tackle.

Stephen McGee, QB, Texas A&M: The ultra-athletic thrower from Texas A&M is garnering a lot of interest due to his outstanding physical tools. McGee recorded the second-fastest 40 time among quarterbacks at the combine (4.66), and displayed tremendous NFL potential while directing a pro-style offense during the East-West Shrine Game. Although he started only three games in 2008 due to an injury (suffered a torn labrum early in the season), McGee has flashed big-time ability at times during his career, and is likely to be a surprising mid-round pick during draft weekend.
