View Full Version : What if Percy Harvin's there at #40?

I guess we pretty much have to take him huh?
Not that it means much, but the Sirius boys I listen to (I know, I know broken record and all) have predicted a possible Manningham-esque slide into the late second, early third.
The main reasoning: With the glut of mid level WR's like Britt, Robiskie, DHB, Nicks, Williams, Barden and Iglesias he could find himself dropping just enough on NFL boards for a drug test to become relevant, even if its only marijuana.
I know I would drop him behind those guys, just due to the risk factor. I've heard about the entourage he has enough times for me to be worried...

Was thinking the same thing earlier. But the level headed Tom Cable would probably like to pass as well. I still think Manningham will be a pretty damn good WR in the league. Best double-move in college ball i've seen in some time.

why on earth would you think that?
one of the more overrated people in this draft.

Wow... thanks for the insight 007.
I've heard some of the bad, doesn't sound like I've heard as much as you, but some people are talking this guy is a top 10 talent in the entire draft... he must be a real clown if they're talking late 2nd/early 3rd...

why on earth would you think that?
Cause he's extremely talented, plays a need position, Al loves speed and playmakers, and the guy was also the #1 recruit coming out of high school and Al loves that kinda pedigree.
But it sounds like he's a real D-bag and I know Cable's trying to get Al to quit them.

I don't think you can dismiss it out of hand, but I am sure if he was there, there'd be a lineman of some kind I'd rather have.

If we pass a WR in the Rnd 1 id be thrilled with Harvin in Rnd 2. Guy is explosive.
Im not as down on him as Langlier, I think he's a killer threat no matter where you put him, but the red flags are bursting for that guy (Sorry bout the cliche). He reminds me of Reggie Bush-lite. Just get the friggin ball in his hands 10-15 times a game, whether its returns, receptions, reverses, screens etc.
I've heard roids and weed tests were positive (weed confirmed at this point) I've hear about character issues dating back to high school etc.
At 71, I might take him based on pure value, but I can't see us taking him earlier, especially if we go WR at #7.
Who knows though.

He, after several more bicep curls, reminds me more of our very own Napolean Kaufman. He would be a better RB than receiver. But could be a solid receiver as well. Could be a special runner. Has a very Nap Kaufman-like burst.

I posted the question assuming we hadn't drafted a WR in the 1st.

On one board a guy was saying he thought he could be a better Steve Smith

Well, since we'll already have Maclin by then, I'm guessing we pass.

Have you watched a lot of him Jack? What do you think, or do you just watch FSU?

He doe'snt have Smith's body control, hands, or leaping ability. He'll primarily be a runner in the NFL. At 200 lbs, he's thicker than Napolean Kaufman was as RB for us. He did ok.

I really watch mostly FSU. Last season I worked most Saturdays, so I couldn't just sit around watching college ball all day. This year I should have weekends off.
I was over at massraider's house watching Mizzou's bowl game, though, and I caught the Mizzou-Oklahoma State game.
Maclin just has an extra gear, very much like Harvin.

I find it hard to believe there is a player in CFB last year more dangerous with the ball in his hands than Maclin. Well, except maybe Harvin.
I do get nervous when I read scouting reports that say he gets a little soft in a crowd.
Harvin, well.........if you draft this guy, and he busts, it will be sooo easy to mock the pick in hindsight. Add in that he really didn't play WR in college, and I am out. Top of the 2nd round, no thanks. 3rd round, shit, why not?
The Steve Smith comparison.....well, Smith didn't go to some stud school (Utah, I think), and didn't do shit for a while in the league. Harvin could follow that career arc, for sure. But Smith, in my mind, what makes him a great receiver: He just thinks he is the baddest muthafucka on the field, has supreme confidence and no fear. I don't think his greatness comes from physical skiills, I think it comes from his head. He is the Lyle Alzado of WRs. Does Harvin have that quality? I dunno.

Harvin is a huge injury risk too. But id still take him in the 2nd.

I'd pass on Harvin. Tweener + idiot + injury prone = not worth anything more than a mid-3rd IMO

Check this out:
Percy Harvin - Stock Plummeting
At some point, a player's talent just is not worth where he is picked, no matter how physically gifted he is.
If I did not have Pac Man Jones rated in my top 65 players before the 2005 NFL Draft, you would have called me crazy.
Same goes for former players like Lawrence Phillips, Rae Carruth, Dimitrius Underwood, Mike Williams, Matt Jones, among countless others drafted in the first round.
What am I getting at?
Pro Football Weekly's Nolan Nawrocki has hinted at Percy Harvin's severe character concerns, which make him a very risky prospect.
Harvin's track record goes all the way back to high school where he had multiple incidents.
In 2004 as a junior, he served a one-game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct during a game. Having played high school sports, I know you have to do something pretty bad to warrant a suspension.
Harvin was reportedly involved in a fight during the end of a basketball game, and it got so big the officials called the game.
As a senior, Harvin was suspended for the remainder of his athletic high school eligibility by the Virginia High School League for numerous incidents during basketball games.
Tom Zimorski, VHSL's Director of Compliance said, "I'm not aware of it happening very often," he said. "I've been here six years, and it's not happened since I got here.”
Scout.com reported that in 2004, “Harvin was suspended from school for an altercation with the school's wrestling coach. After horseplay in the cafeteria, Harvin and the coach/teacher had an altercation that Harvin claims was blown out of proportion, but still leads to a two-game suspension.”
Also in 2005, “He was charged with misdemeanor assault for his role in a street fight and was suspended for two games during the football season of his senior year. Charges were eventually dropped.”
Harvin is a bust waiting to happen. Giving a player a few million dollars only makes his behavior worse because he will get more attention. Nawrocki has stated that Harvin has an entourage that follows him around and he rubs people the wrong way.
How bad does your character have to be that your athletic career is over in high school? The answer is pretty terrible.
It looks like Harvin has not learned from his past as he has tested positive for marijuana at the Combine. Neither Harvin nor his agent has appealed this report.

Wow, I'm guessing you'd have to be a real dick to get kicked out of all high school sports in the state.
