Chiefs sign backup quarter to one-year deal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Chiefs signed quarterback Damon Huard to a one-year contract Thursday, assuring a veteran backup for Trent Green after the departure of Todd Collins earlier in the week.

Huard, an unrestricted free agent, has played sparingly in his NFL career, starting only six games over nine seasons spent with Chiefs, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots, where he was a member of two Super Bowl teams.

Huard also has spent time with the Frankfurt Galaxy in NFL Europe but has only thrown one pass in an NFL game since 2000. He hasn't played the past two seasons, when he has been the Chiefs' No. 3 quarterback.

Kansas City was in the market for a veteran backup after Collins signed a two-year, $2.5 million contract with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday. The Chiefs already have signed Canadian Football League veteran Casey Printers and James Kilian, a seventh-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.
