Considered taking Raji just to piss off the Rajiites here... Nobody really deserving of the #1 spot, so I'll take the shot at giving Calvin Johnson a strong armed QB that can get him the rock down the line...

Yo. The Rams will select Aaron Curry LB Wake

BigTron
03-19-2009, 03:32 PM
2. The Rams consider offense here. LT and WR would fit... but they go Defense. This side of the ball been a joke for far too long and Aaron Curry is the safest pick in the draft (Patrick Willis Jr.) There are still some stop gap LT's to be had at cheap price and they drafted a WR last year in Rnd 1. Who was the last great Ram LB?

Aaron Curry.

# 3 The Pick: Michael Crabtree WR, TT

The Reason: B.J Raji was a close second here as KC looks to implement 3-4, but taking Crabtree and giving Cassell the tools to succeed is top priority, could be his bigger, faster Wes Welker......Plus it keeps him from us, double edged sword.

03-19-2009, 09:55 PM
4: The pick: Eugene Monroe, LT Virginia.

Everybody here knows he's the top player on my board, and Seattle just got the best pure LT in this draft. 2 sacks given up in his career, and he gets to spend a season learning behind one of the best in Walter Jones.

#5: The Pick, Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas

The Browns have holes. They were 30th in scoring O and 31st in terms of yards, 16th in scoring D but only 26th in terms of yards. (Without looking it up, this suggests they really had time of possession issues, the D on the field a lot.) The reflex would be to go O. But they have Derek Anderson and a first round pick in Brady Quinn, Jamal Anderson ran for 1,000 yards last year, and Braylon Edwards -- and only gave up 24 sacks. No obvious holes there, but the injuries at QB hurt, and not having someone opposite Edwards hurt -- though the departed Kellen Winslow, Jr. added something.

So while there was some temptation to take Brandon Pettigrew or a running back to step in for Jamal Lewis, both areas could be addressed in later rounds -- and I found a more glaring problem. 17 sacks for the season -- despite the fact that the Browns had a respectable 23 picks. This lead to the decision to select the top-rated pass rusher in Brian Orakpo to help address this issue. If Mangini can make nice with Sean Rogers, Orakpo makes for a much more dangerous D-line.

#6 - Bengals pick, Andre Smith T Alabama

The Bengals need a tackle to protect their best player, Carson Palmer, so he can return this offense to a strength. Smith is a complete tackle that can also make a difference in the running game. Marvin Lewis is never one to shy away from a black sheep draft prospect if he thinks he's got the talent so Smith's odd pre-draft behavior is a non-factor.

Drum Roll Please ::::::::::::

And with the 7th selection in this years draft the Oakland Raiders have selected

BJ Raji DT Boston College.. surprise surprise :pound:I actually thought Byron would have taken him for the Bungles as they need DL help as well. It would have then basically forced me to choose between Nipsy's boy Everette Brown or J Smith from Baylor.

I don't care if the scouting reports have him as an UT 3 tech guy. He's a run stopper that commands double teams which should free up TK to have a huge year and should help plug the sieve of a leak that has been our run defense for the past 6 years.

So screw you haters:p That's the emmis.

Green Bay Packers select:

Everette Brown, DE, Florida State

With Green Bay moving to a 3-4 it's a little unclear how Aaron Kampman is going to transition to OLB. So adding a guy who is probably a little better natural fit in a 3-4 and brings some speed off the edge will help in the move to a new philosophy.

And with the 10th Pick :The San Francisco 49ers Select : Mark Sanchez, QB USC

# 12, The Pick, Brian Cushing, LB, USC

Wow, unpredictable draft so far. Where to start with Denver? They have a cry-baby pro bowl QB who wants out, an offensive line in some transition, and a mess of a defense that couldn't stop anyone in a 4-3 and now is going 3-4? Oh, man, this is the only time I will publicly admit feeling a little sorry for this franchise, as I imagine what must be going on in their war room.

Very thin at the LB position for a team thinking about going 3-4, and also lacking a NT possibility. This entire draft has reach written all over it, drafting for needs. A 4-3 team giving up 5 yards per rush (30th in the league) really sucks, and giving up a net of 7 yards per pass attempt was good for 27th in the league. All their DTs are possible 3-4 DEs, so not going there. Tempted to have taken Aaron Maybin as a possible SAM/rush LB, and if he's available when Denver picks, I could see them going that way.

But the way this draft has come out, Brian Cushing, the best true LB available, has got to be the pick. Boss Bailey is not a terrible WILL, but Cushing can play SAM or one of the middle spots in a 3-4, so he has to be the pick -- maybe he can coachupDumervil to the LB position while helping his new team pray that Ron Brace is availble when they pick in the 2nd -- otherwise Cushing and the rest of the LB corps is going to be seeing their share of O-linemen up close and personal all season long.

And that concludes my sympathy for the Broncos. Bad drafts, taking on too many personnnel head cases, and picking a fight with the starting QB were all acts of commission, and the chickens are coming home to roost. Dollars to donuts they pick higher than 12th next year.

15th Overall, Texans take Jeremy Maclin - WR, Missouri

Wanted Malcom Jenkins since he could help at corner or safety. Thought about Beanie Wells to team up with Slaton, but didn't think a split guy was worth the pick. I think Maclin opens things up and adds room for creativity. Perfect complimentary guy to Walter and Andre Johnson and could return kicks right away. Not the biggest need, but worth the pick IMO

not a bad idea. i went with malcolm as it fits a need (CB) and he's arguably the BPA. Looked hard at Maclin but he's not going to help this O enough (however he'd be a GREAT fit for Brees and what he likes to do).

Sleet
03-24-2009, 11:16 AM
Chargers: I'm torn between BPA and picking for need. The Chargers need more help on defense than offense, particular at the 5-tech DE.

With Tyson Jackson off the board, Robert Ayers is a possibility. But at 6'3''/272 lbs., he's a little small for the 5-tech DE. (Aaron Maybin is too small, too.)

Ray Maualuga would be a solid choice. That would give SD quite a LB corp, and you can never have too many LBs in a 3-4 scheme.

Before LT re-signed, I thought Knowshon Moreno would be SD's pick. Smith blew it last year by choosing LT over Turner. Now they have an aging RB, who is never healthy by the end of the year, running with Sproles, who's not big enough to carry the load. And I don't think Jacob Hester (5'11''/230 lb) is the answer.

I like Percy Harvin. But SD already has Sproles, and their WR corp. is okay, particularly when Gates is healthy and commanding double teams. Smith can find a WR later in the draft.

Out of all these players, Knowshon scares me the most. That's the guy I wouldn't want to face for the next 5 years. He's the best RB in the draft and would make a great pair with Sproles (Beany wouldn't fit as well). That said, havig resigned LT, it is too early to replace him and give up on Hester, and Sproles was just franchised.

So the Chargers pick Ray Maualuga.

NY Jets:

With the 17th pick in the draft, the Jets select, QB Josh Freeman, K st.

I was torn between Freeman and Heyward-Bey, but I've always followed the rule that if you don't have a franchise QB, you take one if he's availible. Rex Ryan will try to get a Joe Flacco-esque rookie year out of Freeman.

BigTron
03-24-2009, 11:45 AM
Its between DHB and Harvin for the Bears. With so many QB's and OT's off the board they can still get some value here while filling a need. Because he fits the #1 WR role better IMO and matches up well with Hester... the Bears select Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Besides I dont want that X guy getting pissed haha.

With Josh Freeman off the board, this becomes a no brainer. With Carnell Williams suffering from another torn patella tendon, and Ernest Graham probably being best suited as a backup, the Bucs get a gift, a legit top ten talent, and select.....Chris "Beanie"Wells from OSU.

With the 21st Pick in the 1st round, The Eagles select

Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma St

The Eagles let the player they franchised just one year ago, L.J. Smith, go via free agency this offseason. In Pettigrew they get one of the better blocking TE's to come along in quite awhile, who has the ability to develop into a top pass catcher and the compete TE they thought they had in Smith.

#22 - Vikings pick, Alphonso Smith CB Wake Forest

Vikings backfield is nothing special, no depth and both starters are in their contract year. Smith may be a shorty at 5'9", but the guy had 21 int's at Wake and with that Vik's pass rush should feast on some a the stiffs playing QB in the division and bring some big plays to that D.

Would love to get a special QB, OT or WR here, but what's a brother too do?

With their 2nd pick in the 1st round, the Eagles select:

Eben Britton, LT, Arizona

The Eagles are dangerously thin at tackle, and if you have any doubt that they need some LT help, just look at what Osi did the last time he played them. Britton will need to be protected in the passing game early as his gets some polish, but with Pettigrew already in the flock, the Eagles have a TE who is excellent in helping out in pass pro.

Giants need a big receiver, but I don't think they'd be big on Kenny Britt's attitude or Hakeem Nicks' weight gain.

So they fill another need with DB Sean Smith, Utah.

The Giants are really only two-deep at corner, and in this league you need more than that. Plus, he can play safety, where they just picked Kenny Phillips but aren't real talented alongside him.

If that running game could get going, that offense could be even more dangerous than it already is. I really wanted to go with Aaron Maybin to play rushbacker in the 3-4, but ultimately i think this team needs to start being able to run the ball to consistantly win.

Pittsburgh: This is a case where need meets BAP. The question is, do you take the BAP on offense or defense.

Going into last season, people were down on Pittsburgh's OL. Pittsburgh's OL struggle to protect Big Ben and to open holes. Pittsburgh could not run the ball as it was used to, and Ben to a lot of sacks, which resulted in turnovers in the games they lost. Thus, obvious choices would be OT William Beatty, or C's Max Unger or Erik Woods.

However, down the stretch and when it mattered, Pittsburgh's OL held up. Pittsburgh won the SuperBowl. So, how bad can they be? Do they really need to draft the 5th or 6th best OT with their #1 pick? Thus, I'd lean more towards Unger or Woods.

Pittsburgh also is known for drafting stud defensive players and grooming them to dominate in two to three years. They feed the pipeline, so when one of their starters want a big-money deals, they can say, no thanks, as they have another stud in the waiting.

Pittsburgh's next stud in the making could be Jarrod Gilbert. At 6'5''/288 lb. DT with the ability to leap out of pools. Some say this guy might be a 5-tech DT dream. Becuase he comes from a small college, the question is, is Gilbert stout enough, now, to play the 5-tech DT in the NFL. He likely has the pass-rush ability that Tomline covets. DE is a position of need, as much, or almost as much as OL.

Because it is the guy I would want the Raiders to draft, and becuase Pittsburgh is more likely to find OL help in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, rather than a impact 5-tech DT, my pick is: Jarrod Gilbert, San Jose State.

Tough pick for Seattle here at 37.

I debated CB and then thought Trufant, Kelly Jennings and Josh Wilson might be a good enough trio, especially with rumors of Ken Lucas coming back to Seattle. Maybe they find a CB a little later...

I thought about guys like Brace, Ayers and Johnson for the DL, but they have newly aquired Corey Redding, 2nd year DE Lawrence Jackson, Kerney, Tapp, Mebane, Colin Cole and Red Bryant on the DL, so I don't think they address it this early. The DL isnt as weak as I think it is in Seattle.

I then looked at the GAPING hole at LB with the loss of Julian Peterson. Seattle Selects versatile pass rushing OLB Clay Matthews Jr. USC.

He'll play opposite Leroy Hill and Lofa Tatupu in the LB corps and stay on the West Coast.

#38 - Bengals pick, Michael Johnson DE Georgia Tech

Bengals need pass rush in a bad way. They had the second lowest sack total in the league with 17(only the chefs were worse with like, two). Alotta people question Johnson's drive, but he finished school with 28 TFL and 19 sacks... not too shabby.

Thought about Brace here to shore up the middle, but he doesn't get after the QB and they have some young DT prospects in Shirley and Sims, so I wasn't gonna pass up on the super-freaky-prototype measurables and ability of Johnson.

Well it was basically a two horse race here which was affected by the Samson Satele signing earlier this week. Max Unger would be a great fit for the OL because he brings a tremendous amount of versatility. Unger and Satele could be the anchor of the middle of the line for years to come.

However, I'm still not very confident about our wr corps. I think some of us expecting too much from J Walker, JLH, and Schilens. So in light of this, I picked the player who I thought was the most pro ready and could contribute right away. While he may not be the speediest of the receiving class, he has great hands, great work ethic, football IQ, and pedigree.

The Packers need help along the offensive line and while they probably have a more pressing need at RT, taking a top-flight OG like Robinson allows them to slide Daryn Colledge to RT to see if he can take hold of that position. The Packers also had one of the worst inside running games in the league last year and Robinson will definitely help there.

All we'd be doing is throwing him into the mix with Schillens, Higgins and Shields... Robert Ayers and Max Unger are both better players that would fill needs that I would be very disappointed leaving on the board... Unger would make a fine replacement for Carlisle, as well as give us another option at one of the tackle spots should the two question marks we have there not pan out... We've had years of taking fliers in the early rounds on unproven athletes like Langston Walker, Teyo Johnson, Stanford Routt, Sam Williams, Mario Henderson, Arman Shields and Delawrence Grant....And now we're upset at taking a good, proven, sneaky athletic college player? LOL.

Robiskie is the type of guy everyone loves on their team. Runs good routes, sneaky fast, hard worker, durable and has upside as a primary guy. He's been around the NFL for years through his dad, he's pro ready and he has an NFL pedigree.

I'd be OK with Unger too, and Brace is intriguing there...

Ayers is a guy I feel is the most overrated, bar none in this draft.

8 CAREER sacks, including 3 as a senior, whereas a guy like Michael Johnson with 9 sacks last year is the boom/bust prospect?

Ayers is an average prospect sky rocketing in a weak draft. I'd take a chance on Barwin before Ayers.

I agree with you two that the DE's in this draft are "meh" too :D , and I'm not real interested in reaching for one, but I agree with Hboy in that unless the prospect at another postion is special I'd just as soon use our high picks to keep building the line of scrimmage with the best available since ours have been so piss-poor... if that means taking another DT, or another guard/center, so be it. I keep listenting to experts (Not you, dont get too cocky) that break it down in simple terms;

The QB's have HUGE questions, The RB's have speed/size/durability issues, CB's are small or slow, or both. The DE's are undersized, the top WR's are slow or small, The top DT has weight problems etc. etc.

HB: I would have taken Robert Ayers, DE, Tenn, 6'3''/272 lbs.

He's bigger than Orakpo, Brown, Maybin, and Kruger; Mayhock has him rated as the best DE in the class; 5th best player overall. Kirwan projects him going 20th to Detroit, and wrote this: "I wasn't sure about a one-year starter like Ayers until I watched a tape of 100 plays from the 2008 season. This guy has some of the traits of Dwight Freeney."

I didn't see Ayers play; I can't judge. But at #40, after 5 other DEs have been taken, and given that Burgess is in his contract year, Scott's a pass-rush specialist, and Richardson's not that good, I'd taken this guy and not questioned the pick.

Turk's Raiders would then have the following front four: Burgess/Scott, Raji/Sands, Kelly/Warren, Ayers/Richardson. That would give us an additional 600 lbs of DL to stop the run, three good pass-rushing DEs (Burgess, Scott and Ayers) and DTs (Raji, Kelly, Warren).

I have no problem with Robiskie, though, because he'll play and provides a different skill set than Higgins and Schilens.

I said in the first round that this would likely be a reach draft most of the way through for the Donkeys. And here it comes: with Ron Brace off the board and the Donks switching to a 3-4 without a nose tackle, this is the best player on the board. Only two years of college football, I believe (transfer from Penn State with junior status), but goes 6'2" 325 and a 35.5 inch vertical at the combine. Look at those numbers again, and you see a guy who is hella explosive. Not top competitition and as a junior never saw an all-star game -- but if the new regime intends to go 3-4, this is the only option. Even if it is a round early.

#50: The Pick, Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina

Having addressed the pass rush (and will again if this gets down to another round or two) and backup RB (maybe starting by week 10), it's time to address the offense. With the trade of Winslow, the receiveing position looks weak. Given the depth of this draft at WR, that can come later for a guy to pair with Edwards. But the TE position was very important in the Browns O when Winslow was healthy, and Cook presents similar matchup problems., He played for the ole Ball Coach, who certainly knows his O. Ripped off a fast 40 at the combine, though will probably need to add a little weight to be a more effecuve blocker. However, since Winslow was no better a blocker than Johnnie Lee Higgins, Cook could step right in. Stay off the motorcycles, and he''ll start week one.

Thanks to last years draft day trade with Phily, the Panthers finally make their 1st pick late in the 2nd round, and the selection is:

Paul Kruger, DE, Utah

The Panthers need depth across the board, but there just isn't a DT they are comfortable with here, and there is still value to be had later at TE, so they take the best DE still on their board. Kruger is a Chris Long type DE, who isn't rated as highly since he has a long way to go with technique. He should be able to step in from day 1 as a better pass rush option than Brayton across from Peppers.

Pittsburgh need help on the OL. It could take Xavier Fulton (6'5''/301 lb OT) or Jonathon Luigs (6'3''/302 lb C). Both are atheletic. Fulton is soft, though, which I don't think fits the Pittsburgh's way. Good size, very good speed and solid tackler. We finally get a guy who can knock the snot out of people back there. San Diego needs OL, S and DE.

SD also appear thin at CB. Jammer's getting old, Cromardie had a down year, and when Jammer got injured, Cason struggled. SD could move Cason to safety and draft another CB. But I think they'll play Cason another year at CB, and rely on Oliver for depth.

SD let Olshansky go. They did not make much of an effort to re-sign him. My guess is that Smith thinks he can replace Olshansky from within. I doubt that Smith would have created a need on his team, when he didn't have a 2nd round pick to fill it.

SD could go Xavier Fulton, the OT with the most upside available. He has a good frame 6'5''/301 lb and is very atheletic, but, again, he's a little soft and injury prone. My guess is that Fulton is not ready to start, but is more of a project, so SD will pass.

SD defense was a major problem last year. It is behind the offense, although SD did have a down year running the football. But their defense struggled to get off the field, and that put pressure on the offense to score and move away from the running game.

SD needs help at safety both in terms of stopping the run, and in coverage. The Donks just lost their QB. KC's rebuilding. The Hated Ones, believe it or not, are their closest rival, and they open against the Raiders on Monday Night. SD has to stop the run. If they stop the run, Merriman and Phillips will torment JR.

SD selects: Run stopping SS from Nortre Dame, David Burton.

With their first pick in the third round, Denver selects Keenan Lewis, CB, Oregon State

With another pick coming up in a few slots, I'll dispense here with the analysis of other needs. With Dre Bly not working out, total uncertainty in the D front 7, and Champ Bailey possibly living more off reputation and poor coverage on the other side than being the guy everyone believes he is, CB is a significant need.

Best guy here is Keenan Lewis. He's got good speed and size, and has shown very good ball skills. Playing at a smaller power, he got tested as his team's best CB and held up pretty well. That should translate into having the confidence to be targeted -- and sometimes beat -- without losing confidence. This D is gonna need that.

The Donks have brought in a series of retreads at RB, hoping to find one good season left between them. But with Rashad Jennings falling this low, they have got to take a guy who carried his team and has solid character. Considered going WR here, but the value at RB is much better. The Eagles faced a tough choice in the 2nd round, with 2 players who filled a need with similar grades on the board. They went with the slightly higher rated player at S, and are now overjoyed that the player they almost took in the 2nd is still there in the 3rd.

The Eagles select:

Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa

Greene is a complete back, in that he runs with power, picks up the blitz well and is dangerous coming out of the backfield in the passing game. Nice pick in Green, good fit for the Eagles. I was looking at RBs for the Donks when preparing for this, and considered Green, exvcept he's too close in skill set to the Dancing Elephant, and his small hands represented a potential concern in the passing game. The Panthers have to be wondering if Delhomme has what it takes after he shit the bed against the Cards in the playoffs. But don't have the draft stock to get one of the top QB's, and aren't quite ready to give up on Delhomme and go fullout rebuilding.

White gives them a solid player who can come in and contribute from day 1 while potentially developing into the QB of the future. White fills a need at the WR core where Muhsin is not getting any younger, can provide a match-up nightmare in a Wildcat set with either Williams, Stewart or both. And has shown the kind of arm strength in workouts that leads some to believe that his future may actually be at QB.

#104: The Pick, Johnny Knox, WR, Abilene Christian

The Browns lack and explosive wide receiver, someone who can stretch the coverage and open up things for Edwards and the TE. Knox is that guy. It came down to either Knox of Mike Wallace from Ole Miss, but Knox has the higher upside, and Wallace tended to disappear for whole games at a time. Both can return kicks, but Knox has the better initial burst. Call him a poor man's Maclin. With Edwards' arm (Quinn would have to recognize and hit him sooner with his arm), Knox threatens to do some significant damage against teams that try to single him.

Would have liked to go D, but I just don't see value at areas of need for the Browns here.

Interesting, brick.

First heard of Knox reading from pre-combine stuff, started checking him out a little then, but really started looking after the combine. More consistent, I think, than Mike Wallace of Ole Miss. Similar combine numbers in terms of size and speed, though Knox did better at the cone drills.

Knox really seems like a football player who just used the college system to get to the NFL. Big-time 4-a prep player in high school in Texas, enrolled at Tyler JuCo and won national recognition there, then went to D-II Abilene Christian. Not much into academics.

His year at ACU showed even production throughout the year, much better so than Wallace a MSU. Good hands, nice work ethic. I really like this guy, and see him as a late third round value.

Three interesting clips, for anyone who cares. First is some footage Draft Guys TV put up. Second is from his JuCo years at Tyler. Last is from high school. Pure football player, pure receiver. (the HS footage is really bad, but worth watching, 'cause you can see the basic skills he develops later -- great hands, excellent nose for the end zone, very good use of blockers, and surprisingly physical.)

This is a value pick, and gives the Bills a bit of insurance against Marshawn going off the reservation, and Fred Jackson getting too big for his britches. Brown is 6', 224, and runs a 4.4. Rather than reach for an OLB, the Bills gain some quality depth at RB.

At best he becomes a starting tackle in kubiaks scheme, at worst he provides depth

Per brick's note,

-- Deleted pick, since it seems unlikely that Sleet had seen it yet.

On Sunday, the fourth round went faster than I thought it would; and when I checked this morning, thought I was on the clock. Was just trying to move things along before leaving for work, not sure if I'd be able to get back to the board before late tonight. My bad.

Denver selects, now in turn, Scott McKillop, LB, Pittsburgh.

Not the fastest guy, but size and prolific tackler, and makes big plays in big games. Needed presence in the middle, likely first year starter.

The Bears select Brandon Tate WR UNC. This guy would have went a-lot higher if he didnt get injured. This is the Michael Bush of this draft class IMO. I already drafted a WR but Cutler makes the bears passing game crazy!

Sorry BT, Tate was taken at pick 98 in the third round.

HB, McKillop is a tackling machine, but there are some sleeper picks out there who may be as good as him. I'm saving names for the lil Al deal.

Getting a little sloppy around here. Somehow we skipped the Saints pick at 118, but since Lang is busy at work, lets slide:

Asher Allen, CB, Georgia

in at that pick.

The Raiders further solidify the DL with the selection of Mitch King DT/DE Iowa.

Probably a little smallish to play DT full time in the NFL but I think he could transition well to base end. He is a high intensity guy who goes 100% 24/7. Would be a nice compliment to Burgess and/or Scott as he is pretty stout against the run. I am not sold on Jay Richardson outside of as a role player at this point. King will make us forget about the Tyler Brayton pick.

I was tempted to take Franz Joseph but I think King fills an even greater need.

Indianpolis Colts select:

DeAngelo Smith, CB, Cincinnatti

Smith doesn't have blazing speed, but he's more than fast enough for the zone scheme the Colts run, and has the added bonus of being a solid punt returner.

It doesn't happen often, but BPA matched up with Need for the Panthers here making the selection easy:

James Casey, TE, Rice

Casey is a little bit of an unknown coming into the draft, having played for Rice, but at least 1 player evaluator that I read has him as the best all around TE in this year's draft. Pettigrew may be a better blocker, Coffman may be a better reciever, Purvis may be a bit more pollished, but when you put it all together, Casey is just a little behind each of them as #2 in each catagory, giving him a huge upside, especially this late in the 4th round.

Great pick, if King were taller I think he would be getting late 1st round hype. I would be pumped to see the Raiders select him in the 4th round.
