ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the Oakland Raiders are eyeing free agent OL Toniu Fonoti (Vikings) and should wrap up a one-year deal to sign him in the next day or two. Fonoti is looking at a one-year deal so he can try to hit a big contract in free agency in 2007.

there's a rumor that Jeff George is coming back...personally I'd rather have Kerry Fucking Collins as our 3rd stringer than George, who hasn't played since 2001 and sucked ass before that

I also hear we're looking at TE Dan Campbell. I think he'd be a great addition, since he's one of the best blocking tight ends in the league. Definitely would be an upgrade over Flemister and Randall Williams

Remember, Collins is lurking in the background.

Meeting? Work the sumbitch out.

I'm not too concerned what he has to say. I can tell what kind of QB he is on video (I haven't seen too much of him personally). I guess I'd have the conference in a video room and start breaking down decisions he made and asking him why.

Then I'd take him out to the practice field and make him throw a couple to some of the guys (got to bring in a receiver ot two when you're checking out a QB) and ask them what they think of his throws.

Test that puppy out.

Waitaminute! We have a plan. Acquire anyone and everyone that's been out of football for a little while but still thinks they've got it. :D

Seriously though. Going into last season, how many of us thought we had a pretty complete team? How many of us were surprised how poorly we did? Except for the half-empty (or is that 3/4ths) crowd, most of us thought we'd be decent. :o

It looks like Al Davis had the same thoughts. The idea is we've got most of the pieces, we'll add most of what we need through the draft (a couple starters and some depth) and pick up a bunch of low-priced veterans to tide us over until the draftees come through (next season). Look at last year's kids. One will be a better starter at corner, the other a better starter at backer, a third will be a solid backup corner and maybe nickel starter. Not bad to have 2 guys starting and 1 guy contributing in year two from a draft. If we can get 2 starters this year and have 1 coming off the bench we'll be pretty close to not needing too many replacements when the old guys retire next year.

Ladies and gentlemen, that's a tried and true Raiders approach. It's not always successful, and much less so in recent years, but give it a chance, we've done that much before. :(

And this sitting on our hands while other teams get stronger isn't setting well with the Raider Nation. Is this how you sell more ticklets? Where's the OFMA when you need them.

Rupert
03-16-2006, 02:49 PM
Bah! I still think we got a LOT stronger when we kicked Turner to the curb and brought Art in to put this ship in the right direction.

But beyond that, we definitely need a couple defenders.

We could get away with the DE's we have, and might be okay if Hawthorne is worth a rotational spot at DT, so DL is not in a great need. Could we, should we upgrade? Yeah, but we could probably get away with standing pat for one season.

Adding Crockett is really nice for depth at backer, but it does nothing for the starters. Getting Williams back will help, but we shouldn't count on him as a 16-game starter since we have no proof that he can be, even though he's good when he's out there. Ryan Riddel? Who knows what his role can/will be? And where's the quality depth? Johnson is a decent emergency guy mid-game, but I wouldn't want to have to rely on him for 4 or 5 games, let alone more.

Corner is probably set if we bring Reynaldo Hill back.

Safety is a question mark. Only Schweigert is assured a spot and will be solid, hopefully bringing more to the table this season. But no strong safety on the roster and no-one to back up at free safety other than Keyon Nash, who's so ready to play the team keeps bringing in other guys ahead of him on the depth chart. Sure we can bring Cooper back and have a solid guy off the bench and for spot start duties (like last season), but that spot needs a starter that's an upgrade. Fortunately (and unfortunately really), that's not going to be too hard to accomplish.

On offense, we need a change of pace back, but not desperately, and an OG to push for a starting spot if not outright start. A pass-catching TE might be nice, and a true blocking FB would be very welcomed. QB is a critical need on offense, but we could probably get away with a place-holder while the offense gets used to playing mean and McCown could have been that. However, Walter can be that as long as he's not running for his life back there. We have Tui under contract so we only need 1 QB. Unfortunately, he will need to be capable of starting.

Per John Clayton.....

Raiders go fishing: The Raiders are starting to look at a couple of interesting street free agents. They are bringing in former Seahawks linebacker Anthony Simmons, who missed last season because of serious wrist problems. Simmons was a former first-round choice and considered one of the fastest linebackers in the game. They are bringing in former Broncos cornerback Lenny Walls on Monday. Walls was released by the Broncos last season. At 6-foot-4, he's one of the tallest cornerbacks in the game.

I didn't see this one posted...hope you don't mind me posting this here, Crow...a visit by Abraham....

Comings and goings

The Seahawks said goodbye to New York Jets defensive end John Abraham on Wednesday afternoon. They had Abraham in for a free-agent visit along with his two agents, Tony Agnone and Rich Rosa.

Talks went well, but Abraham figures to continue his tour of suitors, with the Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons next up for the Pro Bowl sack specialist.
Meanwhile, two players with local roots are home for visits with the Seahawks.

Safety Lawyer Milloy, a former University of Washington player from Tacoma, was at team headquarters Wednesday. Playing in his hometown for a Super Bowl contender is important to Milloy, his agent said, even though Milloy has drawn interest from other teams.

Milloy, 32, has been to four Pro Bowls in 10 seasons. He had 106 tackles for the Buffalo Bills last season.

Wide receiver Nate Burleson, a restricted free agent from the Minnesota Vikings, will be in Kirkland today. Signing the O'Dea High School grad would cost the Seahawks a third-round pick, which might not be too high a price since Seattle has one of the last picks in that round of this year's draft.

Burleson's best pro season was his second, in 2004, when he caught 68 passes for 1,006 yards and nine touchdowns.

Seattle also expects to have linebacker Julian Peterson from the San Francisco 49ers in for a visit today. Peterson, 27, is regarded as an impact defender with the ability to line up as a linebacker, safety or rush end.

The six-year pro, who is a two-time Pro Bowl player, could be a good fit with the Seahawks' young and versatile defense. Seattle is his first free-agent visit. He also plans to visit the Miami Dolphins.

Finally, Seattle tight end Ryan Hannam was in Miami for a free-agent visit Wednesday, then will meet with the Dallas Cowboys on Friday.

What's Al planning? Is he waiting to make a big splash by signing Tank Williams, John Abraham, and Julian Peterson all this weekend? :D

So far we're just standing pat swith a 4-12 team. We have no QB and haven't done anyting but try and sign one guy who couldn't pass his physical. The Art Shell hiore was great. The Tom Walsh hiring is puzzling. A new coaching staff alone won't fix what's wrong with this team. We need players.

Fonoti signed.....

Mar 17, 2006 -

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ first free agent signing from outside their own team in 2006 is a big one. A really big one.

Massive guard Toniu Fonoti, an unrestricted free agent who split the 2005 season between San Diego and Minnesota, is the newest Buccaneer. He visited with Buccaneers brass on Friday and had a deal done before the day was over. One of the largest players at the league at well over 350 pounds, Fonoti was a Sports Illustrated first-team all-pro selection in 2004.

As is team policy, details of Fonoti’s contract were not released.

The Buccaneers are always on the lookout for offensive line help, and Fonoti could provide a lot of that, particularly as a powerful run-blocker. Before injuries derailed his 2005 season – and, separately, led to his midseason trade to the Vikings – Fonoti was one of the league’s best guards in 2004, when he helped produce the league’s sixth-ranked rushing attack in San Diego. The Chargers also allowed the fourth-lowest sack total in the NFL in 2004, with 21, but the line’s most important job was opening holes for Pro Bowl running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

Officially listed at 6-4 and 350 pounds, Fonoti entered the league as a second-round draft choice in 2002, taking 39th overall. He stepped immediately into a starting role at right guard and opened 14 games, helping Tomlinson gain 1,683 rushing yards. Fonoti lost the following season to a foot injury suffered in the preseason, however, spending the whole year on injured reserve.

He came back from that bad break extremely well, starting all 16 games at left guard in 2004 and helping the Chargers post a 12-4 record. He started the first two games of 2005, too, but was then sidelined by a hand injury.

Meanwhile, the Vikings were hit by a rash of injuries to their interior linemen, leading them to pursue a recovered Fonoti in trade. The Chargers and Vikings pulled off a swap just before the trade deadline and, after giving Fonoti four weeks to learn the system, the Vikings installed him at left guard against Green Bay on November 21. Unfortunately, though Minnesota’s revamped line provided strong run-blocking in that game, Fonoti suffered a groin injury and didn’t play the rest of the year.

Overall, Fonoti has played in 34 games and started 33, getting extensive playing time at both guard spots. He could battle for one or both spots with the Buccaneers this summer. The team started rookie Dan Buenning at left guard and third-year man Sean Mahan at right guard in every game last season and improved its rushing attack from 29th in the league in 2004 to 14th last year. At the moment, Mahan is a restricted free agent.

Fonoti’s signing comes one week into the league’s free agency period, which was delayed eight days from its originally-planned starting date of March 3 due to protracted CBA negotiations. The Bucs were busy on the first day of free agency, re-signing three of their own players who had become unrestricted free agents on March 11: fullback Mike Alstott, kicker Matt Bryant and defensive tackle Chris Hovan. Fonoti’s signing, however, is the Bucs’ first move since that day and the first one that involves a player from another team.

Despite his four seasons in the league, Fonoti is still only 24 years old. He was born in American Samoa and played high school football in both California and Hawaii. At Nebraska, he was a consensus first-team All-America selection at Nebraska.

Here is some news on Fonoti....

Let's get physical: It's interesting to see how different teams treat physicals. The Raiders failed Toniu Fonoti after he agreed to a one-year, $1 million deal earlier this week. The physical problem was that he weighed close to 400 pounds. He flew to Tampa Bay and the Bucs didn't have as much of a problem. His one-year deal is less than what he would have received with the Raiders, but the Bucs didn't take long to pass him on the physical.

More on Fonoti....

Free-agent guard Toniu Fonoti, who played in San Diego from 2002-2004 and for Minnesota last season before going on injured reserve with a groin injury, agreed to terms to join the Raiders but never signed a contract after the club announced he had failed his physical.

An NFL source said Fonoti was too heavy for the liking of new coach Art Shell, who wanted him under 335 pounds. Fonoti was cut by San Diego after his weight ballooned to the 400-pound range.

Some info on Renaldo....

Renaldo Hill, whose play as a starting nickel back made him one of Oakland's best defenders last season, was the club's first significant loss in free agency. Hill signed a three-year deal with Miami with a reported $2 million in bonus.

Hill professed a desire to return to the Raiders following the season, and team officials said they wanted Hill to return. However, Hill, recruited at Michigan State by Nick Saban, has an admiration for the Miami coach.

Oakland used a nickel as its primary defense in 2005, in part because of injuries, and its not clear whether Hill - who has neither the speed of a pure cover corner nor the size (5-11, 190 pounds) of a strong safety - would have had as prominent a role in 2006.

Sure we did, we picked up what's his nuts at linebacker. You know, the guy who hasn't played in a year.

As far as Fonoti signing with Tampa after he failed a physical here: I've heard it said many times that anyone can fail an NFL physical and anyone can pass. It all depends upon the team. Does anyone think Joe Namath would have ever passed an honest physical with his knees? The simple answer is no, but since he could still play the position, there was no reason to fail him. All the doctor does is report his findings, the team decides whether that's pass or fail. Nice how that works out isn't it?

Thatnks Agnry Pope. Looks like the Raiders have much stricter weight requirements than some other teams (BUCS). DAMN. I think he would have been just what the doctor ordered for our OL...a big, nasty Samoan. Oh well.

On Cooper from Corkran....

The Raiders re-signed S Jarrod Cooper in a move that went largely unnoticed but shouldn't be overlooked. For one, the Raiders signed Cooper the day after free agent safety Renaldo Hill bolted to the Dolphins. Secondly, special teams standouts such as Cooper are very difficult to find, let alone replace. In short time, Cooper has gone from a curiosity signing into a core player through hard work and learning from youthful mistakes he made when he was with the Panthers. He flashed at coaches so often in practices and games that they felt compelled to play him more on defense. Now, Cooper stands a fair shot at earning the starting spot at strong safety created by the departures of Hill and Derrick Gibson. Cooper succeeds by capitalizing on his great speed, impressive instincts and fearlessness in throwing around his body. Just the same, losing Hill is a big blow for the Raiders. He was a versatile player who played hurt and about as well as anyone this side of DE Derrick Burgess last season. The Raiders tried to secure Hill to a multi-year deal, but they got edged out by a Dolphins team coached by the man, Nick Saban, who recruited Hill out of high school to Michigan State. . . .

Jason Cole, of the Miami Herald, reports the Oakland Raiders are showing an interest in free agent QB Tommy Maddox (Steelers), according to agent Vann McElroy.

Here is more on Maddox...

MADDOX TO VISIT

The Dolphins will bring in former Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Tommy Maddox for a visit Tuesday as they try to find someone to fill the same role after losing Gus Frerotte to the St. Louis Rams.

Agent Vann McElroy said Maddox has received interest from the Oakland Raiders and Cincinnati Bengals, but the Dolphins' situation might be the most intriguing because of Maddox's relationship with new offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.

Mularkey had the same job for three seasons in Pittsburgh when Maddox helped lead the Steelers to the playoffs in 2002. Maddox lost the starting job in 2004 to first-round draft pick Ben Roethlisberger.

Mularkey talked to Maddox before the visit was confirmed, and the Dolphins have been talking with McElroy since last week, when they acquired starter Daunte Culpepper from the Minnesota Vikings and released Frerotte in a salary-cap move.

The Dolphins considered re-signing Frerotte as their backup, but he joined the Rams on Thursday night, receiving a three-year, $6 million contract.
Maddox spent five years out of the NFL before joining the Steelers in 2001.
In 2002, he took over the starting job from Kordell Stewart and led the Steelers to the second round of the playoffs, completing 62.1 percent of his passes for 2,836 yards, 20 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

In 2003, he completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 3,414 yards, 18 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

Geez, just when I thought I'd seen the last enough Derrick Gibson, we re-sign him. I guess that is our high point thus far !!!!!

The Raiders clearly intend to build this team through the draft. Fine with me. I believe most of these teams have overpayed for many of these players anyway.

I think we'll be much more active during training camp, by sprinkling in veterans late in the game. Much like William Thomas and Tyronne Wheatley a few years back.

Our entire draft hinges on Andrew Walter IMHO.

If the Raiders believe that Walter is the 'man', then we can then draft either Mario Williams or Ngata. I would be happy with either, though I'd love to see Williams and Burgess on the edges.

If the Raiders aren't sold on Walter then how do we not ensure ourselves a shot at one of the top 3? I know Al never drafts a QB this high, but this really might be the year IMO....

Boones: I like Cooper, but he has growing to do as a player. He's got athleticism and desire, and the vast majority of great players have those, now if only he'd dial into the football instinct thing, he'd have what's needed to be a great player. The one thing he's shown that Gibson never has is improvement, so I hold onto hope. Beyond that, he's full of the dreaded P word.

RIVL: You know. I was thinking the same thing, and then I thought of recent drafts (not last year - which was good) when we thought the same thing, and we almost went bald scratching our collective head afterward.

It would be the crowning moment of what has been a lackluster off-season so far.

We signed Tyrone Poole....

Ex-Pats CB Poole signs two-year deal with Raiders

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Veteran cornerback Tyrone Poole, who was released by the New England Patriots last week after two injury-marred seasons, has signed a two-year contract with the Oakland Raiders, ESPN.com has learned.

Financial details were not yet available, but league sources said that the contract is for considerably more than the NFL minimum.

Following his release, which saved the Patriots about $2 million in 2006 cap space, Poole met last Friday morning with Atlanta Falcons officials and then flew to Oakland to visit with Raiders coaches. He had been scheduled to travel to Denver on Monday before signing with the Raiders.

Poole, 34, started for New England in Super Bowl XXXVIII and had a standout campaign in 2003, but he appeared in just six games the last two years and he finished the 2004 and 2005 seasons on injured reserve. The 10-year veteran played in just one game in 2005, tried to come back from an ankle injury but then went on injured reserve in late October.

In '03, Poole was one of only four New England defensive players to start in all 16 regular-season games and the club's three playoff victories. He had 66 tackles and six interceptions that year and demonstrated the kind of "press" coverage skills that marked his early career. But the momentum Poole built that season, toward becoming a very good corner again, was then negated by two years of injuries.

If healthy, Poole should be able to contribute as a nickel cornerback, because he remains a very hard worker and is a defender with natural cover instincts. He also provides experience and leadership to a very young Oakland cornerback corps, one that includes three-year veteran Nnamdi Asomigha and second-year pros Fabian Washington and Stanford Routt.

One of the Carolina Panthers' three first-round choices in their inaugural 1995 draft, Poole was a top-flight corner from the outset of his career, an undersized but physical cover player. After four years in Carolina, the former Fort Valley (Ga.) State standout had stints in Indianapolis (1998-2000), Denver (2002) and New England (2003-05). He sat out the 2001 season for family reasons.

In 130 games, including 109 starts, Poole has 497 tackles, 17 interceptions and 133 passes defensed.

Crockett out of shape and voided.
Hill lost to Miami, damnit.
Poole signed. Midget 5-8 DB.
Starks signed (soon?). Hill replacement at 5-10 who was injured last year.

It would have been better to get Hill back, but either of these guys might have a little left in the tank.

The Oakland Raiders, where old DB's go to die. At least that's how it's been lately, with all respect given the actually departed, Eric Turner.

I'm glad we're not paying Gibson anything substantial. He knows he's gotta play for his pay these days.

We are interested in Griese...

Griese's return appears unlikely
Former starter will visit Bengals, Bears; Bucs add ex-Saint Aaron Brooks to backup QB list.

By RICK STROUD, Times Staff Writer
Published March 17, 2006

TAMPA - The last time Brian Griese played in an NFL game, he tore two knee ligaments but refused to leave the field on a cart.

Now it appears Griese is walking away from the Bucs for good.

The veteran quarterback, who led Tampa Bay to a 5-1 start last year before a season-ending knee injury, may have ended his career here after just two seasons.

The Bucs appear to be moving on as well.

Saints free-agent quarterback Aaron Brooks visited Thursday, one day after the Bucs received permission from the Redskins to speak with Patrick Ramsey.

Griese, meanwhile, is scheduled to visit the Bengals today. On Saturday, when he turns 31, Griese will meet with the Bears. The Ravens, Vikings and Raiders also are interested.

Apparently, the Bucs made it clear to Griese they were turning over the starting job to Chris Simms, who signed a one-year, $2-million offer sheet. And it's believed the offer to Griese does not exceed what Simms will earn next season.

"It doesn't seem to be going in the right direction," Griese's agent, Ralph Cindrich, said Thursday. "We view him and other teams view him as more than a backup quarterback. This is a situation where (the Bengals are) a good team with a hell of an offense, and it's time to get him out of (Tampa Bay)."

Griese was expected to make a rapid return to the Bucs after being released in a salary cap maneuver on the eve of the free-agent signing period last week.

But he finalized plans to visit other teams just one day after the Bucs turned their attention to Ramsey, the 26-year-old who, according to his agent, could visit Tampa Bay over the weekend.

The Redskins are seeking a fourth-round pick and recently turned down the Jets' offer of a seventh-rounder.

Apparently, based on the jobs he is considering, the rift between Griese and the Bucs is fairly deep.

Rather than return as the No. 2, Griese is willing to consider keeping the seat warm for Bengals starter Carson Palmer, who is rehabbing from reconstructive knee surgery and is shooting for a mid October return.

The Bears are seeking an experienced backup for Rex Grossman, who has missed 27 games the past two seasons with a torn ACL and a broken ankle.

Brooks, who turns 30 next week, was released Wednesday after six seasons in New Orleans. His career has been marked by inconsistency but he managed to put himself in the Saints' record books. He broke Archie Manning's record for career touchdown passes with 120 and is second to Manning with 19,156 passing yards. He led the franchise to its only playoff win as a rookie.

The Bucs also have turned their attention to other positions. Lions receiver Kevin Johnson and Chiefs receiver Marc Boerigter are scheduled to visit today.

Johnson, 29, played in six games last season and finished with 17 receptions for 133 yards and no touchdowns. Boerigter, 27, was limited to 10 games the past two seasons because of an assortment of injuries.

Denver linebacker Patrick Chukwurah is scheduled to visit next week.

The Bucs made another proposal Thursday to Patriots free-agent tackle Tom Ashworth, but no agreement has been reached. Ashworth also is negotiating with the Dolphins and Jets.

COACHING STAFF ANNOUNCED: Running backs coach Art Valero was promoted to assistant head coach and special-teams coach Richard Bisaccia was given the title of special-teams coordinator. Aaron Kromer, who joined the staff last year as a senior assistant, is now the senior assistant/offensive line.

The official staff lineup announced Thursday: Jon Gruden, coach; Monte Kiffin, defensive coordinator; Bill Muir, offensive coordinator/offensive line; Richard Bisaccia, special-teams coordinator; Art Valero, assistant head coach/running backs; Joe Barry, linebackers; Tim Berbenich, offensive quality control; Casey Bradley, defensive quality control; Greg Burns, defensive backs; Jethro Franklin, defensive line; Jay Gruden, offensive assistant; Paul Hackett, quarterbacks; Nathaniel Hackett, offensive quality control; Paul Kelly, assistant to the head coach/football operations; Aaron Kromer, senior assistant/offensive line; Jimmy Lake, assistant defensive backs; Richard Mann, receivers; Ron Middleton, tight ends/assistant special teams; Mike Morris, head strength and conditioning; Kurt Shultz, assistant strength and conditioning.

Raiders now looking at Aaron Brooks

By Steve Corkran
CONTRA COSTA TIMES

The Raiders' pursuit of former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper barely got off the ground before he got traded to the Miami Dolphins. Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh McCown spurned a two-year contract offer from the Raiders for a job with the Detroit Lions.

Now, the spotlight has moved toward former New Orleans Saints quarterback Aaron Brooks as the Raiders continue their search for a replacement for deposed veteran Kerry Collins.

Brooks, who turns 30 on Friday, was released by the Saints soon after they signed free agent Drew Brees. He met with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Friday. He is expected to visit the Raiders in the coming days, a person in the front office said Monday.

That meeting could occur as soon as today, though nothing had been finalized as of Monday night.

Brooks spent the past six seasons with the Saints. He played in 13 games last season before then-coach Jim Haslett benched him in favor of Todd Bouman. He completed 55.7 percent of his passes for 2,882 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.

By comparison, Collins completed 53.5 percent of his passes for 3,759 yards, with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Collins got sacked 39 times, compared with Brooks' 33.

In other news, the Raiders re-signed strong safety Derrick Gibson and backup offensive lineman Corey Hulsey, as well as veteran cornerback Tyrone Poole.
The Raiders released Gibson after last season because of a contract that called for Gibson to make $10 million in base salary next season. He missed most of last season after he sustained a wrist injury. He was replaced by Renaldo Hill. Gibson is expected to compete for the starting spot with Jarrod Cooper.

Hulsey, 28, spent parts of the 2003 and '04 seasons with the Raiders before securing a roster spot in training camp last season. He is projected as a backup who has the potential to earn a starting spot at left or right guard.
Poole, 34, last played for the New England Patriots. He appeared in one game last season and five in 2004. He likely will be tried out as an extra defensive back.

Also, the Raiders had in tight end Chris Baker and linebacker James Allen for visits in recent days. Neither was offered a contract.
Finally, Raiderette auditions are scheduled for April 2 at the Oakland Airport Hilton. Go to www.raiders.com for more info.

Scouting Report on Allen:

Positives: Has the frame to add more bulk with no loss in quickness…Very instinctive player with good vision and ball anticipation ability…Quickly locates the ball and is very aggressive vs. the inside run…Has a strong upper body, utilizing that power to take on and shed to make the play…Uses his hands well to take on and shed blocks…Knows how to reroute and disengage from the tight end in the short area.

Negatives: Gets turned around some when redirecting inside as he tends to lose leverage by leaning into blocks with his wrong shoulder…Takes bad angles working inside the box, appearing more comfortable chasing down to make the tackle…Has had back problems in the past…Has very thin ankles and slender calves.

By the Numbers
Ht: 6'3"
Wt: 240
40-time: 4.64

10-yard dash: 1.67

There is still a lot of quarterback movement. Kerry Collins still looks like a candidate to join the Baltimore Ravens. Talks between the Bears and Brian Griese are heating up. If Al Davis has decided we're in true "rebuilding" mode then I have no problem with this. But really under the circusmstance I'd say there ought to be an open competition and let the best man win between Brooks, Tuiasosoppo and Walter.

Considering that we need 3 QB's on the roster, trading him means acquiring another QB. And since we've passed on all the other FA's, that means draft.

I personally don't think going with Walter means rebuilding. We started that process two seasons ago when we decided to go back to power football. Unfortunately, I don't think the process is over yet. But, if you believe the OL is a year away from being ready (which means we need some young talent to fill the holes - or step up). We can succeed with Walter if we commit to the run and go the Pittsburgh route by limitting passes to 20-ish per game.

Free Agent Update

Filed under: Giants 101— David Syvertsen @ 3:01 pm

I do not have a lot of new information, but I will give you what I just got.

-Keyshawn’s visit went well this morning, he was able to mingle with some of the Giants that were working out. Our initial offer will be around a 3 year, $13 million deal with a fourth year club option worth over $4 million. He would recieve $ 8 million in guaranteed money. But no deal has been signed, which leads me to believe there is still a chance for Arrington.

-As of right now, the Giants have about $8-$9 million left in cap space, but at least $4 million will be used for rookies. Thus, if this Keyshawn deal goes down, that might be it for the offseason, leaving holes at DT and OLB.

-Grady Jackson was, and still is torn between three teams. The Giants, Rams, and an unknown third party, most likely the Raiders, Bills, or Chiefs have been giving him a lot of attention over the past few days. If Arrington and Johnson are both out of the picture, I’d pencil in Jackson to start next to Joseph in 2006.

-Brenston Buckner…nothing. I am told the Giants will end up with one of the big three (Keyshawn-Arrington-Jackson) and that is all. Signing one of those guys will round up our FA period and let us divert our attention to the draft.

-Charles Woodson is still without a team, but his contract demand has decreased only a little bit, if at all. The Giants have not scheduled a visit.

-A little premature on this one, but the Giants are shopping their 2007 1st rd pick to move up in this year’s draft it seems. They will have little-to-no room cap wise next year, so getting rid of that first round contract might be the reason. There will be more to come on this over the next month, just thought I’d put it in your mind.

Oh yeah, we use Fargas on special teams. In my book, there's room for 2 or 3 special teams only guys, everyone else should be capable of or fighting for a starting spot. If they're not I think they're deadwood. Sure we get to put 7 guys in street clothes every week, and that means some leeway, but I want a tough decision who to tell to grab the sweatsuit, not an easy one.

I'm not sure I like the idea of holding an open competition for the starting job between those guys. Reason being that unless Al envisions Brooks as a long term option, it does little for the development of this team. As irresponsible as it sounds, if Al has an inkling that Walter is our QB of the future then I prefer the baptism by fire approach. No pain... no gain.

Yeah, Denver might be trying to get up to puck Vernon Davis. They dropped their best receiving TE because he couldn't block. Unfortunately, no-one else on their roster is that good of a receiver at TE. So it makes sense for them to grab Davis, and it will hurt the rest of the division if they do get him.

Of course the Raiders hinting that they want him might have helped urge them into trading up. Maybe Al knew all along and is just F*@king with them.

I agree. I would love to have Lendale White.I don't know if he would be worth a 7th pick overall. But stranger things have happened. I think Denver will make a big push for him.
As much as I like LenDale White, we could really use more of a speed back than a banger. White is more of a banger with speed. Think a better Crockett or Wheatley.

He would be a great backup for Jordan, and possibly a better starter shortly, but he's a one-cut guy and we really need a multi-cut guy with hands who can do the 3rd down duties. So let's trade up for Bush.

Brooks in as Raiders' QB

By Jerry McDonald, STAFF WRITER
Inside Bay Area

ALAMEDA - The Oakland Raiders made their first major move of the free-agent signing period Tuesday, agreeing to terms with quarterback Aaron Brooks on a contract, according to two NFL sources. Terms were not immediately available.
Brooks, who started 82 games for the New Orleans Saints from 2000-2005, will replace the unpopular Kerry Collins, who was 7-21 over the past two seasons.

The Raiders brought in Brooks for a visit Monday night; he visited with the Raiders on Tuesday, and stayed in Oakland Tuesday night when it became apparent the two sides were nearing a deal.

Brooks, who turns 30 on Friday, has ability similar to Collins in that he can throw the deep pass, but has good mobility, with 1,410 career rushing yards and 13 touchdowns.

As a second-year player in 2000, Brooks led the Saints to the only playoff win in franchise history, a 31-28 victory over the St. Louis Rams. He had a 43-43 career record until going 3-10 in 2005, losing his job to Todd Bouman.

Brooks was waived last week when the Saints signed Drew Brees to a free-agent contract.

Bringing in Brooks buys the Raiders some time if they are considering drafting one of the three top quarterbacks in the NFL Draft. The other quarterbacks on the Oakland roster are veteran Marques Tuiasosopo, who started one game last season, and second-year man Andrew Walter, who has not taken a snap from center in a regular-season game.

Tyrone Poole will be paid $1 million in salary in 2006 and $1.5 million in salary in 2007. I don't know about the bonus yet.

QB Brooks, Raiders agree on two-year deal

By Adam Schefter
NFL Analyst

(March 22, 2006) -- After failing to land Daunte Culpepper, after declining to bid on Drew Brees, the Oakland Raiders called for their version of their quarterback keeper.

They reached agreement with former Saints quarterback Aaron Brooks on a two-year deal worth about $8 million. There was some speculation that Brooks could visit Green Bay, but he passed up any chances to stay in Oakland.

Now, Brooks becomes the favorite to be Randy Moss' starting quarterback, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo are likely to be back on the bench, Kerry Collins will not be returning to Oakland, and the Raiders have added their first significant offseason piece.

The Raiders told Brooks he would compete for the starting job -- no promises in advance. But he gives the Raiders the veteran presence they need.

It's a nice present for Brooks, who will turn 30 years old March 24.

Brooks managed to latch on to one of the few teams in the league that still had questions as to who would start at quarterback. At this point of free agency, starting jobs did not exactly abound, but Brooks found one.

Oakland views Brooks as a quarterback that has averaged 25 touchdown passes a year, and a player who can be a star if he learns to limit his mistakes. Other NFL teams view Brooks as a poor man's Culpepper, the quarterback the Raiders initially targeted. Somebody's right, and the Raiders are rooting that it's them.

Well, depending upon the terms, it sounds like a decent acquisition. He's been tagged as a bit of a head case. But who wouldn't have been in New Orleans the past couple seasons.

He doesn't have a great career passer rating (79.7) but he's been within 10 points of it either way his entire career (88.8 high 70.0 low), which is pretty consistent.

Except for his first and last seasons in N.O. he played all 16 games, so he's durable. He was benched for the last 3 games last season and he took over for an injured Jeff Blake in 2000 so durability has never been an issue.

His career completion percentage is 56.4 and he's been within 3 points his entire career, another very consistent number.

He's thrown a great 24 TD's to 8 Int's and a poor 13 to 17. Unfortunately, he's never thrown more than 27 TD's and thrown a high of 22 Int's. Career-wise he's thrown 120 TD's to 84 Int's (or 1.429 TD's for Int).

Art Shell's offense has never gotten more than 22 TD's from his QB's. So this won't change that approach. But I think this is probably the best QB Art has ever had, so we'll see what happens with him under center.

You know, I don't know what the freak Schefter's talking about. The Raiders denied interest in Culpepper numerous times. Maybe they weren't interested at the price being asked. Maybe they were hoping to pick him up after he was cut. But those are maybe's good ole Adam doesn't let us know he's already accepting in the affirmative.

I guess he just wanted to take another cheap shot at the Raiders.

At least he mentioned us. I guess we should be thankful. :p

Culpepper, in contrast to Brooks has a great career rating 91.5, but has been as great as 110.9 and as bad as 72.0, about 19 point in either direction. Big fluctuations. Going from MUCH better to almost as bad (and not desperately bad).

He's missed 5 games in 2001, 2 games in 2003, and 9 games in 2005. Not entirely durable.

His completion percenatge is higher 64.4 with a slightly higher deviation, but never worse than Brooks's best. So even though it's slightly less consistent, it's consistently better.

Why am I comparing the guy we didn't get to the one we got? Schefter, you're an ass, and I'm an ass for following your dubious lead.

Raiders sign quarterback Brooks to two-year contract

JANIE McCAULEY

Associated Press

ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Oakland Raiders found their replacement for Kerry Collins, signing quarterback Aaron Brooks to a two-year contract Wednesday to compete for the starting job.

The 29-year-old Brooks was cut last week by New Orleans when the Saints signed Drew Brees, one of the most coveted free agents available this year.
Brooks started 13 games for New Orleans last season, completing 240 of 431 passes for 2,882 yards and 13 touchdowns. He threw 17 interceptions.
"Oh, sweet," receiver Alvis Whitted said in a phone interview. "I'm glad that we do have a new quarterback. I'm sure he'll fit right in with what we're trying to get done here. I'm sure the coaches are excited. From what I've seen of him play, he's done some great things. He's very athletic, a mobile quarterback and very intelligent, too. He's a great fit for us, and we're happy to have him."
Brooks, who had started 82 straight games before being benched for the final three games of 2005, spent the past six seasons with the Saints after playing for Green Bay in his first NFL campaign in 1999.

Brooks, a fourth-round draft pick by the Packers out of Virginia, was one of few capable quarterbacks left on the market this offseason.

"Aaron gives us great depth at the quarterback position and provides us with a veteran presence," new Raiders coach Art Shell said.

Oakland parted ways with Collins on March 10 in an expected salary-cap move that saves them $9.2 million against the salary cap once bonuses are factored into the figures.

The 33-year-old Collins went 7-21 record in two years as Oakland's starter and said at the end of the season he was willing to restructure his deal but would not play for "peanuts."

When the team cut Collins, Shell was left to consider Marques Tuiasosopo and Andrew Walter as leading candidates for the position.

Tuiasosopo has just two starts in his five-year career. In 2003, he replaced the injured Rich Gannon to start against the Detroit Lions but suffered a season-ending injury to his left knee in the first half.

Tuiasosopo started one game last season against the New York Jets after Collins was benched but turned the ball over four times in the 26-10 loss and Collins regained the starting job the following week.

Walter, a third-round pick out of Arizona State last year, didn't play as a rookie. He threw for 85 touchdowns and 10,617 yards during his college career.

The Raiders scored only 51 points, with just six touchdowns, in their final five games and lost their last six overall and eight of nine despite an offense featuring Collins, Randy Moss, LaMont Jordan and Jerry Porter. At 4-12, they finished with one fewer victory than in fired coach Norv Turner's first season a year ago.

Perhaps the most glaring statistic is Oakland's failure to win a division game for the first time since owner Al Davis came aboard in 1963 to coach and eventually own the team. The Raiders went 1-11 against the AFC West during Turner's two seasons.

Raiders find live arm in Brooks

By AP wire reports
March 23, 2006

The NFL's Oakland Raiders found their replacement for Kerry Collins, agreeing to terms on Wednesday with former New Orleans quarterback Aaron Brooks on a two-year contract worth more than $8 million.

Brooks, 29, gives new Raiders coach Art Shell a proven starter to compete with veteran backup Marques Tuiasosopo and second-year pro Andrew Walter. Brooks was cut last week when the Saints signed free agent Drew Brees.

"It was a win-win scenario," said Brooks' agent, Mason Ashe. "They have a lot of potential, a lot of firepower. It looked like they were just missing the ingredient Aaron adds."

The contract includes a number of incentives based on Brooks' performance. He started 13 games for New Orleans in 2005, completing 240 of 431 passes for 2,882 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Brooks spent the past six seasons with the Saints after one season in Green Bay.

Pencil me in as disappointed with Brooks' signing. IMO, he's a sideways move from Kerry Collins. He's more mobile, but I think he makes worse decisions. If he's the backup, that's ok, but I just don't think you can look to him in the 4th quarter of a game where you're down a TD and say, "Yeah, we're gonna win this thing". Obviously, you can't say that about Tui or Walter yet either, but they haven't had the opportunities that Brooks has.

Hey! Brooks did some of those late game heroics in his first season with the Saints. It's why they let Jeff Blake, who wasn't doing a bad job, go. Since then he has been more pedestrian, but he had a couple good years.

Lateral move. Yeah, kind of. Not the kind of guy who's carried his team on his back. But that's not really what we're expecting from our QB is it? I know Art Shell isn't.

Slaughter....

In other news, the Raiders re-signed offensive tackles Chad Slaughter and Brad Lekkerkerker. Retaining Slaughter became a huge priority for the Raiders in light of Slaughter's performance in place of Robert Gallery in the regular-season finale Dec. 31.

Slaughter manhandled New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan for almost the entire game in his first start of the season and only the second of his six-year NFL career. That showing validated the Raiders' decision to keep Slaughter on the roster the past four seasons as he waited for an opportunity.

Larry Allen is looking for a contract to make $4 million and we are only willing to go $2-3 million a year. That is the hold up at this point. It should be resolved soon if no other team comes in at the last second.

Duane Starks is a Raider but the final kinks of his contract are getting ironed out. The announcement should come soon.

Take it for what it is worth.

Raiders sign veteran cornerback Starks

Thursday March 23, 2006

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) The Oakland Raiders signed veteran cornerback Duane Starks on Thursday, the second former New England defensive back they've acquired this week to bolster the secondary.

Starks was released by the Patriots on Feb. 25 after his lone season with New England ended in injury. He was placed on injured reserve Nov. 10 with a shoulder injury.

The Patriots acquired the 31-year-old Starks in an offseason trade with Arizona last year. He intercepted 25 passes in his first seven seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and Cardinals, but had no interceptions in seven games with the Patriots.

New England had envisioned Starks as a replacement for Ty Law, who left the Patriots after the 2004 season. Baltimore drafted Starks in the first round, 10th overall, in the 1998 draft.

Oakland added Tyrone Poole on Monday. Poole, an 11-year NFL veteran, played the last three seasons with the Patriots but was limited to six games the last two years because of injuries. He played only one game last season, the opener against Oakland, before being sidelined with an ankle injury.

The Raiders were looking for secondary help after cutting ties with Charles Woodson earlier this offseason. Poole will be added to a roster that includes three young cornerbacks in Nnamdi Asomugha, Fabian Washington and Stanford Routt.

Woodson To Visit With Bucs

By: Jim Flynn
March 23, 2006 6:55PM EST

Oakland Raiders free agent cornerback Charles Woodson is scheduled to fly to Tampa Thursday night and will meet with Tampa Bay officials at One Buccaneer Place on Friday, PewterReport.com is reporting. A former first-round draft pick, Woodson is entering his ninth season in the NFL. He posted 17 interceptions and 66 passes defensed during his eight-year career with the Raiders. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Woodson is considered a versatile defensive back that can play both cornerback and safety.

Despite the fact that Tampa Bay has starting cornerbacks Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly, and nickel CB Juran Bolden under contract for the 2006 season, the Buccaneers still are interested in acquiring free agent cornerbacks.
PewterReport.com is reporting that Oakland Raiders free agent cornerback Charles Woodson is scheduled to fly to Tampa Thursday night and will meet with Tampa Bay officials at One Buccaneer Place on Friday.

A 1998 first-round draft pick out of Michigan, Woodson recorded 383 tackles, 17 interceptions, two touchdowns and 66 passes defensed during his eight-year career with Oakland.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Woodson is considered a versatile defensive back and can play both cornerback and safety.

With Barber, Kelly and Bolden under contract, the Bucs could be interested in signing Woodson to compete with Will Allen at free safety, where Woodson has spent some time playing during the latter part of his career.

Should he sign with Tampa Bay, Woodson would be reunited with head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen, both of whom had a hand in drafting him when they worked for the Raiders.

Woodson,29, has struggled with injuries over the past several seasons. He played in just six games last season before being placed on injured reserve with a broken leg.

Here is a story on Brooks....

Fresh start as Raider may be just ticket for Brooks

March 23, 2006

Pete Prisco

Sometimes a new start is a good thing, even if it means accepting failure in the past.

Aaron Brooks is about to find that out, putting the demons and the nastiness of his New Orleans Saints career finally behind him now that he's with the Oakland Raiders.

So what are the Raiders getting? A talented quarterback who somehow hasn't reached the level many thought he would.

It could be a move that pays off in a big way for the Raiders, one certainly worth the risk.

Brooks might be the biggest tease in the NFL. One play, he looks great. The next play, he looks lost. One game, he shows star potential. The next, they say he's a bum again.

That inconsistency drove the Saints mad, and it made Brooks an easy target for fans, some who even crossed the line when letting him know their disdain with racially insensitive mail.

"You'd be surprised by some of the things people have said to me," Brooks said last summer.

No, I really wouldn't.

Fans can be passionate, cruel, nasty and downright ugly. Brooks lived that with the Saints, even if he often held his tongue, not wanting to stir up a hornets nest of more nastiness.

"What's the point?" he once told me.

He let it roll off his back, the jeering on Sundays the toughest part to deal with.

Instead of lashing out, Brooks had this carefree approach that gave off the impression he didn't care. He'd smile on the field, sometimes projecting a nonchalant demeanor after throwing an interception.

It drove fans mad.

It bothered coaches.

It even riled some teammates.

When Jake Delhomme, a Louisiana product, was the team's backup, the fans screamed for the Saints to play him and not Brooks. The disdain for Brooks rose to new heights when Delhomme led the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl two years ago.

The credo of Saints fans became this: And we have Aaron Brooks?

You don't have him anymore.

It's time to find somebody else to beat up on. Brooks is on his way to throw deep bombs for Al Davis, the man who loves that style of play.

Brooks, who turns 30 Friday, still has some good football left in his right arm. This would seem to be a good place to start over. The Raiders are in desperate need of a veteran quarterback who can start, perhaps a guy who can help lead a young player they might take in the first round of the April draft, say a guy like Vince Young.

Six years ago, Brooks led the Saints to the playoffs, his career seemingly ready for takeoff to greatness. It never happened. There was too much inconsistency as he was sometimes asked to do too much.

Even so, Brooks leaves New Orleans as the all-time leader in touchdown passes thrown, surpassing Archie Manning. But Manning has something Brooks never will.

Love from the city of New Orleans.

Brooks has always maintained that none of that mattered, but it was clear it did, because in almost every interview I did with him when he was with the Saints, it came up -- sometimes unsolicited.

I really like Brooks. He was always accommodating, always quick with a quote, his wide smile probably hiding the anger inside. He speaks his mind, which is OK, too.

Is he a great quarterback? No, but he can be a good one. He still throws too many passes off his back foot, still forces too many passes into coverage and still turns the ball over too much.

But there's always the good, a rifle shot into a small target for a touchdown or a scramble throw for a big gain.

That's the tease.

In Oakland, with the burden of never living up to the fans' hopes in New Orleans now gone, maybe the bad will go with it, outweighed by big-play throws to Randy Moss and Jerry Porter.

Brooks signed a two-year deal worth $8 million with the Raiders. That's chump change for a starting quarterback and certainly worth the risk for the Raiders. Daunte Culpepper and Drew Brees might be the quarterback moves that made the biggest news this offseason, but don't discount this one.

That new start for Brooks just might bring out all his talents on a regular basis, the ugliness of New Orleans now in his rearview mirror. The hunch here is that this move will pay off for the Raiders, even if that might shock some fans in the Big Easy.

We had this player in early January for a visit...Jets signed him....

Warren’s determination gets him deal with Jets

By Sammy Batten
Staff writer

Mike Warren has never been one to take no for an answer.

“I don’t even like that word,’’ the former all-conference linebacker at Pine Forest High School said.

Major college recruiters didn’t believe he was good enough as a senior at Pine Forest in 1999 to offer him a scholarship. So Warren went to Raleigh and made the N.C. State squad as a nonscholarship walk-on.

When it became apparent after two years that the Wolfpack wasn’t going to give him an opportunity to play, Warren transferred to NCAA Division I-AA Elon University and became an all-conference linebacker.

And when tryouts with several professional teams last spring didn’t result in a contract, Warren just worked harder.

The relentless attitude paid off Thursday as the National Football League’s New York Jets signed the 24-year-old to a free-agent contract.

Warren worked out Thursday morning at the Jets’ training camp facility in Hempstead, N.Y., for team officials, including Fayetteville’s Jimmy Raye. Raye is the new running backs coach for the Jets.

The performance was so impressive that the Jets made a contract offer, according to Warren’s agent, Ralph Vitolo.

“He absolutely blew it up,’’ Vitolo said. “This is such a great story because Mike just wouldn’t give up. A lot of people told him he’d never make it. This is very dramatic, almost like the Joe Horn story.’’

Horn, a Douglas Byrd graduate, only played junior college football and then in the Canadian Football League before making it big as a wide receiver for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints.

Warren, a 6-foot-1, 249-pounder, was signed by the Jets to play fullback.

It was an emotional moment when he signed the contract, according to Warren.

“I just sat there looking at it for a minute, thinking about how all my hard work had finally paid off,’’ Warren said in a telephone interview from New York’s LaGuardia Airport as he waited to return to Fayetteville. “But nobody said it was going to be easy.’’

The contract ended a two-year odyssey for Warren, who last played at Elon in 2003. He finished second on the team with 81 tackles that season, including seven behind the line of scrimmage.

After finishing his career at Elon, Warren continued to train in hopes of catching on with an NFL team as a linebacker. He was also introduced by a mutual friend to Vitolo.

“Mike came by the office and I could tell he was mentally ready to play,’’ said Vitolo, who represents NFL players such as Horn and Rowland’s Vonta Leach, among others. “But he needed better balance between his legs and upper body. So he went to Atlanta for some specialized training and when he came back the metamorphosis was incredible. He had a Pro Bowl body when he came back.’’

Warren displayed his new build at a camp attended by professional scouts last spring in Maryland. He performed so well he was invited to an “elite’’ combine that June in Indianapolis.

Teams from the arena leagues to the NFL began to express interest in Warren. The Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were NFL teams who contacted Vitolo.

Warren traveled to Oakland for a private workout Jan. 4, at which point Sean Jones of the Raiders’ player personnel department suggested another change for Warren.

“He felt Mike would be a better prospect at fullback than linebacker,’’ Vitolo said.

Raye, a Fayetteville native and graduate of E.E. Smith High School, agreed when he conducted a private workout with Warren about four weeks ago in Pinehurst. The Jets then telephoned Warren a week ago to invite him up for a private workout.

“It was just a matter of showing up and doing what I’d been doing,’’ Warren said. “I ran the fastest (40-yard dash) time I’ve run yet (4.65 seconds). I guess adrenalin had a lot to do with it. It felt good, to say the least.’’

Warren will return to New York later this month to begin offseason training with the Jets. He feels good about his chances of making the team, which currently lists just one fullback on its roster in third-year pro B.J. Askew.

“I think I’m in the right situation to have a good chance to fight for the starting fullback job and to play on special teams,’’ Warren said.

Vitolo is confident Warren will make the team.

“There are football players out there, and there are football players who are warriors,’’ Vitolo said. “That kid is a warrior.’’

Former Oakland cornerback Charles Woodson was scheduled to arrive in Tampa Bay for a get re-acquainted session with his former head coach, Jon Gruden, and Buccaneers general manager Bruce Allen. Anyone who says we signed them because we lost Woodson doesn't understand we drafted Asomugha in case we lost Woodson a couple years ago. We drafted Washington to replace Buchanon. And we drafted Routt to be the nickel and 1st guy off the bench. They all look capable of doing the jobs we got them for. The new vets are for depth and injury assistance. ANALYSIS

Positives: Good athlete with that natural burst and snap anticipation skills to dominate coming out of his stance … Charges with explosive quickness and power … Can neutralize and control combo blocks, uses his hands with force to disengage … Has good lateral agility, finishing well on stunts … Collides with force and shows proper wrapup tackling technique … Maintains balance and uses his hands effectively to defeat low blocks … Has the ability to plant and drive on the ball, displaying above-average quickness in long pursuit … Disruptive chasing the quarterback … Stays low and works his hips well shooting the gaps.

Negatives: Has very poor workout habits … Tends to put on considerable weight and shy away from the weight room when not monitored … Needs to drop 20 pounds in order to retain his explosion … Additional weight has robbed him of his lateral flexibility, but he does have an explosive straight-ahead burst … Gets too narrow-based due to his soft midsection, resulting in blockers getting underneath his pads to drive him off the ball … Needs to show better leverage in his anchor … His tenacity only comes in spurts … Needs to break down and wrap better as ball carriers can elude him in space … Disrupts the action in the backfield, but just can't seem to get to the quarterback … Runs out of gas too much due to poor conditioning … Has a tendency to get too high in his stance when moving laterally and lacks change-of-direction agility which leaves him exposed too much … Attitude needs to be improved, as his coaches constantly got on him about his conditioning.

We are talking with Grady Jackson....

NFL: Bengals re-sign Wilkins

By GEOFF HOBSON

The Bengals secured their leading special teams tackler over the past two seasons Thursday when backup linebacker Marcus Wilkins agreed to a one-year deal, according to his agent.

The Bengals don't confirm deals until they are signed.

But the hunt for a backup quarterback appeared to stall with Joey Harrington expected to go to Kansas City at some point in a trade and the agents for Jamie Martin and Anthony Wright waiting to hear from the Bengals.

The agent for defensive tackle Sam Adams said he and the Bengals talked Wednesday but Angelo Wright is also talking to the Raiders as well as to the Falcons about another run stopper, Grady Jackson. One league source said yet another defensive tackle Lional Dalton, who visited the Bengals last week, re-signed in Kansas City after brief talks with the Bengals.

One of the agents for Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington, Carl Poston, said Arrington didn’t come for a visit as previously thought, although he expects one still might happen.

"LaVar and I got our wires crossed," Poston said Thursday. "He has been making visits and been on the road a lot. I still think it's a visit that could happen at some point."

Wilkins, 26, got a one-year deal for the minimum $585,000 salary along with a $40,000 bonus, agent Mark Mersel said. On Tuesday, Mersel finalized a two-year deal with former Packers receiver/punt returner Antonio Chatman that the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported is worth about $1.5 million but could increase to $2 million with incentives. Chatman gets about $250,000 this year in signing and workout bonuses, the paper said.

With Wilkins now blocking on punt returns again, Mersel joked that he was just trying to get Chatman his incentives.

“There’s no question that Marcus wanted to return there. He likes the coaches and he’s obviously been productive for them,” Mersel said. “There was some strong interest from other teams, and we had hoped to get a longer term, but when that was satisfactory we were comfortable that his role can expand on defense and we’ll see what happens on the market next year.”

A big booster of the move is special teams coach Darrin Simmons, who over the weekend saw the Texans nab one of his top players over the past three years in restricted free agency in wide receiver Kevin Walter. Although the Giants signed special teams ace David Tyree to No. 3 receiver money, the Bengals matching a four-deal that included $2.5 million guaranteed for a No. 4 receiver didn’t appear plausible.

But Simmons also doesn’t have another wide receiver like Walter who can play in all four phases of the kicking game.

Tab Perry is a possibility, but he returns kicks and he could be the No. 3 receiver depending on Chris Henry’s situation.

So it was imperative that the Bengals keep the 6-2, 230-pound Wilkins, one of Simmons’s coveted “four-phase” guys. He’s got 36 special teams tackles since joining the Bengals on waivers from Green Bay 11 days before the 2004 opener, ahead of safety Anthony Mitchell’s 34 and Walter’s 31.

Mitchell, who re-signed for a year last week, and Wilkins give Simmons continuity for a unit that ranked 16th in the NFL fueled by cover teams led by Wilkins. The Bengals finished seventh in kick coverage and 16th in punt coverage.

“His strong suit is his speed. He can really run, so his strength is on kickoffs,” Simmons said of Wilkins. “He got double-teamed almost every time down the field this season and it hardly happened to him the year before because he was an unknown. A guy like Marcus taking up two guys opens it up for guys like Anthony Mitchell and Kevin Walter.”

Of the Bengals free agents, four are in the fold or about to be in the fold with offseason workouts set to begin April 3: Wilkins, Mitchell, backup cornerback Rashad Bauman, and backup running back Kenny Watson.

Three have signed elsewhere in backup quarterback Jon Kitna (Lions), tight end Matt Schobel (Eagles) and backup middle linebacker Nate Webster (Broncos). Indications are the Bengals would like to re-sign backup linebacker Hannibal Navies, tight end Tony Stewart, and backup defensive lineman Carl Powell, but they don’t appear to be pursuing backup safety Ifeanyi Ohalete and backup fullback Nick Luchey.

Info on Woodson's visit in Tampa Bay and Seattle is not interested....

Bucs Will Meet With Woodson
.
By ROY CUMMINGS rcummings@tampatrib.com

Published: Mar 24, 2006

TAMPA - The Bucs don't appear to be in need of a starting-caliber cornerback, but one of that ilk apparently is headed their way.

The agent for four-time Pro Bowl corner Charles Woodson confirmed that Woodson arrived in Tampa late Thursday for a meeting with the Bucs today.

Woodson, 29, had his best years while playing under Bucs coach Jon Gruden in Oakland, making the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons. Since 2002, however, Woodson has struggled to stay healthy and play up to the level of some enormous contracts.

Woodson made $10.5 million after being named the Raiders' franchise player for the second consecutive year last season, but for the fourth consecutive year he failed to turn in a complete season, missing the final 10 games because of a broken leg.

The Bucs appear set at corner, with starters Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly and backup Juran Bolden, who recently was re-signed to a multiyear contract. They are, however, in need of an experienced free safety, so the Bucs may plan to ask Woodson to consider a move there.

"Charles will do anything, including selling popcorn, if it's going to help his team win," said Woodson's agent, Carl Poston. "The good thing is Jon and [Bucs general manager] Bruce [Allen] know what they're getting with this kid. But [economics] will obviously be a determining factor."

The news regarding Woodson, who also plans to visit Green Bay and Seattle, came shortly after the Bucs learned they'd lost out in bidding for former Patriots free-agent tackle Tom Ashworth, who agreed to terms on a five-year contract with the Seahawks.

The Bucs targeted Ashworth as a possible replacement for Kenyatta Walker, but according to agent Tom Mills, Ashworth received a more lucrative offer from the Seahawks and felt more comfortable about playing in Seattle.

"[Tom] really hit it off with the Seattle [offensive line] coach and felt like their offense suits his talents very well," Mills wrote in an e-mail. "The compensation package is very fair for a starter.

"Tampa was very creative throughout the [negotiating] process and made a sincere effort to complete the deal within their cap space."

Complete details of Ashworth's contract were not available, but it is believed to include a payout of $4.5 million in the first year. Mills said previously that the Bucs offered only to pay backup rates for Ashworth, mostly a regular with the Patriots the past three seasons.

The Bucs have also expressed interest in signing free-agent tackles Brad Hopkins and Mike Pearson, and the agent for Walker has said in recent weeks that the Bucs remain interested in retaining Walker as well.

The Bucs also continued their efforts to add depth to their receiving corps. They continued negotiating with the agent for Giants free agent Tim Carter, and according to one of his representatives, Chiefs free agent Marc Boerigter still was contemplating joining the Bucs.

Meanwhile, the New Orleans Times Picayune reported that the Bucs have scheduled an interview with receiver/return specialist Michael Lewis.

Also, a representative for Broncos free-agent linebacker and special teams standout Patrick Chukwurah said Chukwurah is trying to decide between signing with the Bucs or returning to Denver.

and....

Poston said no contract negotiations have taken place, nor does he expect any until Woodson visits the Green Bay Packers next week. Poston said he also hoped to arrange a visit with the Seahawks, but Seattle officials said Friday they have no interest in Woodson.

Here are some comments by Crockett on Brooks....

Raiders insider: Second chance awaits Brooks as Raiders QB

By Jason Jones -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 am PST Saturday, March 25, 2006

The Raiders have been a haven for veterans to revive their careers, and quarterbacks are no different.

Jim Plunkett, Jeff Hostetler and Rich Gannon were three who found success with the Raiders after playing to mixed reviews with other teams.

The Raiders now hope that's the case with their newest quarterback, Aaron Brooks.

If successful, Brooks' name will be mentioned along the lines of Plunkett, Hostetler and Gannon.

Plunkett won two Super Bowls. Gannon was a league Most Valuable Player and reached the Super Bowl. Hostetler had his best individual seasons and went to the Pro Bowl as a Raider.

Should Brooks stumble, his name instead will be lumped in with the likes of Jeff George, Marc Wilson, Jay Schroeder and, most recently, Kerry Collins.

The mention of these names is more likely to bring frowns from the Raider Nation, as all are associated with less-than-stellar performances.

One of the reasons Brooks agreed to a two-year contract with the Raiders is for an opportunity to prove his last season in New Orleans wouldn't define his career.

Brooks, 30, was 3-10 as a starter under then-coach Jim Haslett last season. Haslett benched Brooks in favor of career backup Todd Bouman for the final three games.

Haslett told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that Brooks "regressed" last season but wouldn't say the unusual circumstances of having no headquarters or home field because of Hurricane Katrina were excuses.

Brooks' agent, Mason Ashe, said his client called the Raiders a "win-win" situation.

The Raiders are stable in the skill positions, with receivers Randy Moss and Jerry Porter and tailback LaMont Jordan. The Raiders believe they have pieces in place for a high-scoring offense.

"It doesn't get any better than this for a quarterback coming into a new situation," fullback Zack Crockett said.

One reason Norv Turner was fired and replaced by Art Shell as coach was that the Raiders averaged only 18.1 points per game last year. The Raiders scored more than 21 points only three times in 2005.

Crockett said he looks forward to playing with Brooks and that the quarterback reminded him of Gannon and former Florida State teammate Charlie Ward.

If Brooks can resurrect the athleticism and instincts that once made him an exciting quarterback to watch, he likely will be more Gannon and less Collins, whose immobility limited his effectiveness when the offensive line broke down.

"He can move around, and he's known for his escapability," Crockett said. "It helps everyone. It helps the offensive line. It helps the running backs. It helps the receivers. And you've got a new coach who played offensive line, so you know he's going to protect you."

Chiefs interested in Walls

Having recovered from a prolonged groin injury, former starting Denver cornerback Lenny Walls visited Kansas City this weekend and may visit Atlanta. Oakland also is showing interest.

Walls was waived by Denver in November and was claimed by the Raiders. However, he didn't pass his physical.

But Walls is completely healthy now.

It wouldn't be a surprise if Walls signs with the Chiefs. The team has a need at the position and former Denver secondary coach David Gibbs has the same staff job with the Chiefs.

Walls was always intriguing because he could cover pretty well and is 6-4. I say pretty well because he's overmatched against most smaller WR's, but since the overwhelming trend is to use huge WR's, he fits the bill more and more.

With Aaron Brooks agreeing to a two-year contract worth a reported $8 million - approximately $3 million of that due in 2006 in bonus and salary — it gives the Raiders an opportunity to sever the relationship should they draft a quarterback or decide second-year man Andrew Walter is their future.

More on Charles....

WOODSON PLANS: Reading between the lines, it appears the Bucs' interest in Raiders defensive back Charles Woodson is for him to play safety.

Woodson visited One Buc Place last week but left without an offer. He became a free agent March 11 when the Raiders declined to use their franchise tag on him as they had the two previous seasons.

"Free agency is not just making acquisitions, it's the interview process," Gruden said. "Charles is a friend of mine and now that he's a free agent it's a chance to resume some friendships. I care about him. He's a great player and was a great player when I was with him, I know that.

"I look at Charles as a football player. That's how he won the Heisman Trophy, playing offense, playing defense. And as you watched him play (last) year, he played strong safety, free safety, left and right corner. He's a football player. His role, if we were to be able to get him, would be determined as the days unfold. He is a hell of a football player, a great guy and obviously we're pursuing him like a lot of other teams are."

Free-agent checkbook remains open
Eagles linebacker Adams pays visit

Although the Cardinals have completed their shopping for big-ticket players in free agency, they haven't put away their checkbook for good yet.

Outside linebacker Keith Adams, a five-year veteran most recently with Philadelphia, visited Arizona last Friday. The Raiders reportedly also are interested in Adams.

His agent, Jordan Woy, doesn't expect any deal to be reached this week, he said via e-mail. advertisement

The Cardinals are interested in acquiring a weak-side linebacker to compete with Orlando Huff, who started last season.

Adams, 5 feet 11, 223 pounds, was mostly a special-teams player and spot starter during his first three years in Philadelphia. He started all 16 games last year, finishing with 101 tackles, including 12 in a loss to the Cardinals in December.

He was with Dallas one year before moving on to Philadelphia.

The Cardinals have signed two free agents from other teams this off-season: running back Edgerrin James from Indianapolis and guard Milford Brown from Houston. They have also re-signed quarterback Kurt Warner and guard Reggie Wells.

Lenny Walls signs with the Chiefs....

Chiefs sign Walls to one-year, $1.75M deal

John Clayton

It's been a tall order trying to fix the Kansas City secondary over the past two years, but the Chiefs made a big move Saturday by reaching a one-year, $1.75 million deal with former Denver Bronco Lenny Walls.

At 6-foot-4, Walls is the tallest cornerback in the NFL. He had been with the Broncos for almost four seasons before he asked for his release late last season, trying to get ready for the 2006 season. Walls, hoping to play the Broncos twice a year, visited two of the Broncos' AFC West rivals -- the Raiders and the Chiefs -- before taking an offer from the Chiefs to challenge for playing time.

One of the biggest pluses to joining the Chiefs is the chance to be reunited with new Chiefs secondary coach David Gibbs, whom he worked with in Denver. Gibbs was fired by Herman Edwards during the offseason.

The 192-pound Walls was a success story coming out of college as an undrafted free agent. He was a full-time starter in 2003 but had injuries that bothered him in 2004 and 2005.

Green Bay may be the one that will sign Woodson....from NFL Network...

(April 3, 2006) -- One way or another, it now looks like cornerback Charles Woodson is going to wind up by the Bay -- either Green Bay or Tampa Bay.

Woodson spent today visiting Green Bay. One Packers official said the team has a "significant interest" in signing the former Raiders cornerback. It should.

The Packers need another cornerback to start opposite Al Harris, and signing him would allow Green Bay to move its 2004 first-round pick Ahmad Carroll to nickel back.

Then there is this factor, which could well be the deciding factor in where Woodson winds up: The Packers still have a bushel of salary-cap room available, whereas Tampa Bay does not.

Green Bay's biggest offseason moves were re-signing defensive end Aaron Kampman and running back Ahman Green, but just as notable, the team also lost kicker Ryan Longwell and center Mike Flanagan.

An NFL executive believes the Packers are feeling the pressure of signing a high-profile productive free agent, and there just aren't many more out there. Woodson is one of the last men standing. His addition would be a boost to the Packers roster and Green Bay's morale, especially while it awaits Brett Favre's decision.

And no one knows when Favre finally will announce his decision, but the football world is almost assured of hearing something this week.

Favre is hosting his annual golf tournament April 6-9 in Tunica, Miss. Tunica could be just the town and time for Favre to say, as many Packers officials expect, that the quarterback would like to return for one more season -- his last. Favre is expected to attend his golf tournament, and Packers fans would like to know whether their quarterback can be expected in Green Bay.

Best of who is left...I don't agree with the Woodson blurb...take it for what it is worth...

Best Defensive Players Left

1. LaVar Arrington, LB - We wonder how Arrington feels about giving back $4 million now. His agents asked for too much money at first and now most of the league’s cap space is gone. The Dolphins, Jaguars, and Giants have shown interest.

2. Charles Woodson, CB – He’s overhyped, overpriced, and not great in the locker room. That said, he’s still a starting caliber cornerback and there aren’t many of those left.

3. Ty Law, CB – Still a solid starter, but wants to be paid for his career. He’s meeting with the Seahawks.

4. Grady Jackson, DT – Questionable attitude, but a starting run-stuffer.

5. Ahmed Plummer, CB – An ascending cornerback talent before injuries struck the last two seasons.

6. Tommy Polley, LB – Did a nice job filling in at linebacker for the Ravens.

7. Brad Kassel, LB – Would fit in nicely as a rotation inside linebacker for a 3-4 team.

8. Gary Walker, DE – Veteran could help a 3-4 defense as a rotation end.

9. Tebucky Jones, S – Nothing special, but there are worse safeties starting in the league.

10. Lance Schulters, S – See Tebucky Jones.

Best Offensive Players

1. Kerry Collins, QB - It’s surprising the Ravens haven’t jumped to sign him. He will either retire or end up in Baltimore or Arizona as an intriguing backup.

2. Peerless Price, WR- It’s awfully thin on offense when Price is our second ranked player left. But there should be enough talent there to be a No. 3 receiver. The Patriots are reportedly looking at him.

3. Antowain Smith, RB - Has shown he can be a useful backup running back the last two years.

4. Anthony Thomas, RB - It’s surprising how close he is to being out of the league for good.

5. Az-Zahir Hakim, WR - Can’t stay healthy, but a versatile No. 3 receiver and return option.

6. Jonathan Wells, RB - Could help a team as a No. 3 running back and fullback.

7. Paul Edinger, K - Teams seem to prefer him over Todd Peterson, the other veteran kicker out there.

8. Ricky Proehl, WR - May have to hang ‘em up.

9. Tommy Maddox, QB - We would take Anthony Wright over him, but it looks like Tommy Gun will get a job somewhere.

10. David Boston, WR - Just a public service announcement that he’s still alive. Four years removed from a 1,500-yard season, the 27-year old could be out of the league.

Restricted Free Agents

1. Ike Taylor, Steelers CB – A team would have to give up a first-round pick to get sign away this promising young cornerback. The Steelers would also be inclined to match any reasonable offer. That said, is a low first-round pick such a crazy pricetag for a future star at cornerback?

2. Seneca Wallace, Seahawks QB – The backup quarterback for the NFC champs took a visit to Tampa, but received no offer sheet. The Seahawks don’t seem sold on Wallace as their long-term backup, but his athleticism is intriguing and would only cost a fourth-round pick.

3. Josh Brown, Seahawks K – Seattle can match any offer Brown receives or receive a seventh-round pick back. We’d be surprised if Green Bay, Atlanta or New England doesn’t try to sign him.

4. Ricky Manning, Panthers CB – The rest of the league must view Manning as a one game wonder. Pushed to a nickel spot after his starring role in Carolina’s Super Bowl run, he would only require a third-round pick to sign.

5. Zach Hilton, Saints TE – We’re not big fans of Hilton, but he produced well to close 2005 and would require no compensation to sign. That says how highly the Saints’ new staff values him.

6. Vince Manuwai, Jaguars G – An up-and-coming guard, most teams aren’t interested in swapping a third-round pick for an interior lineman.

Deke Cooper confirmation...

Dolphins Sign S Deke Cooper As An Unrestricted Free Agent

April 5, 2006

The Miami Dolphins today signed four-year veteran safety Deke Cooper to a one-year contract as an unrestricted free agent from Jacksonville.

The 28-year-old Cooper has spent the last three seasons with the Jaguars. In 2005, he started 12 of the 16 games in which he played at strong safety, and recorded 80 tackles and an interception, while adding six stops on special teams. In 2003, his first season with Jacksonville, he started ten games at free safety and collected 74 tackles and an interception. Overall in his NFL career, which also includes one season with Carolina (2002), he has played in 56 games, including 22 starts. He has totaled 190 tackles, three interceptions, a sack, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and 33 stops on special teams. He also played with Rhein of the NFL Europe League in the spring of 2002 and was a first-team All-NFLEL selection as he led the league with six interceptions.

The 6-2, 210-pound Cooper was a four-year letterman at Notre Dame (1996-99) where started 25 of the 45 games in which he appeared. He totaled 203 tackles, six interceptions, four fumble recoveries and seven forced fumbles. He graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in sociology and computer applications. Born October 18, 1977 in Swainsboro, Ga., Cooper attended Evansville (Ind.) North High School, where he lettered in football and track.

Bucs Familiar Faces, Success Could Lure Woodson

IRA KAUFMAN
4/5/2006

TAMPA - Tampa Bay's status as a division champion and Charles Woodson's familiarity with Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen could prove to be critical factors in his choosing between the Bucs and Packers, according to the agent for the four-time Pro Bowl cornerback.

Negotiations continued Wednesday between the Bucs and Woodson, the first rookie Gruden welcomed to the NFL as a head coach, but the Packers also remain interested in the former Heisman Trophy winner.

"Charles wants to win, and that's the bottom line," said Woodson's representative, Carl Poston. "He went 12-0 his last year at Michigan and won a national championship. Now, he wants that Super Bowl ring and he wants to join a team that's committed to winning."

There are indications the unrestricted free agent may take his time before making a decision.

Woodson, who turns 30 in October, earned a combined $19.3 million as Oakland's franchise player the past two seasons before hitting the open market. He has already visited One Buc Place and Green Bay, with Seattle rumored to be another potential suitor.

"I would think the familiarity between Charles, Jon Gruden and Bruce Allen is a big plus for the Bucs," Poston said. "We want to get a deal done, but it has to be the right fit at the right numbers. Green Bay probably is in better shape cap-wise, but you never know. Sometimes, those things can be deceiving."

A broken leg sidelined Woodson for the final 10 games in 2005, but he is still considered one of the league's elite defensive backs.

While the Packers are likely to keep him at corner, Woodson probably would be shifted to safety if he joins the Bucs, who have one of the NFL's premier cornerback tandems in Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly.

Poston suggested Woodson's role in the secondary wouldn't be a deal-breaker.

"I think it depends more on the system," he said. "Bruce told me a long time ago that Charles is such a phenomenal athlete, he could probably be the best free safety in the league if he wanted to."

The Packers may have more money to offer Woodson, but the Bucs appear to have several advantages.

Green Bay is coming off a 4-12 season and Brett Favre's status remains uncertain. The Packers play in frosty Lambeau Field, and their defense allowed an average of 21.5 points per game last year.

The Bucs had the NFL's top-rated defense and won the NFC South with an 11-5 mark.

After leaving the Wolverines after his junior year, Woodson was the fourth player drafted in 1998, Gruden's first season on the Raiders sideline.

"As a football player, Woodson is such a unique guy," Gruden said last week. "He can stand in there and play man-to-man, old-school bump-and-run coverage with the best of them, and he will knock you out."

Jasper visiting the Eagles....

Jasper Spent First 2 Seasons With Eagles

Free agent defensive tackle Ed Jasper is visiting the Eagles on Thursday.

Jasper, a nine-year veteran, spent last season with the Oakland Raiders. He played in 15 games, starting one, and finished with two sacks.

The 33-year-old Jasper (6-2, 295) enjoyed his most productive seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, for whom he played six seasons. After recording a career high 3½ sacks as a reserve in 2000 and 2001, Jasper started on the Falcons’ defensive line for the next three seasons and had a combined seven sacks.

The Eagles are in need of a defensive tackle to bolster their defensive line, which struggled last season to stop the run and pressure the quarterback. Last month, the Eagles bolstered their pass rush by signing veteran defensive end Darren Howard.

Jasper spent his first two NFL seasons with the Eagles, who drafted him in the sixth round in 1997.

Ed Jasper....

Eagles, DT Jasper agree to one-year contract

Len Pasquarelli

Unrestricted defensive tackle Ed Jasper, who played 15 games for the Oakland Raiders in 2005, is headed back to the franchise with which he began his NFL career.

The nine-year veteran has agreed to a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, who chose him in the sixth round of the 1997 draft. The deal, which is expected to be officially executed on Thursday, includes a $40,000 signing bonus and $710,000 base salary.

Jasper, 33, will provide more depth to a well-stocked tackle position, which already includes veterans Darwin Walker, Hollis Thomas, Sam Rayburn and Mike Patterson.

His addition could allow the Eagles to part with Thomas, a veteran run-stuffer who has asked to be traded because of a contractual dispute. In re-joining the Eagles, after an absence of seven seasons, Jasper is returning to a scheme that is a nice fit with his skills set and is more conducive to his success. Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson likes to rotate a lot of tackles, and Jasper should maximize his production by not having to play as many snaps.

The former Texas A&M standout played two seasons in Philadelphia but was released following the 1998 campaign, and signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 1999. Jasper became a starter with the Falcons and, for six seasons, was a stalwart performer on the team's defensive front and a strong leader in the locker room. But following the Falcons' disappointing loss at Philadelphia in the 2004 NFC title game, Jasper hinted at retirement, and Atlanta released him shortly thereafter.

Jasper signed a one-year deal with the Raiders last spring, appeared in 15 games, and registered 24 tackles and two sacks, appearing mostly as the team's No. 3 tackle.

In 118 games, including 60 starts, Jasper has 247 tackles, 17 sacks, six forced fumbles and four recoveries.

Jasper is a good guy to have on the bench. He provided good depth and solid production at the 3 and 5 technique spots. He was not spectacular, but off the bench you could count on him to be solid. I hate to see him go, but it has to mean we've got something in mind for depth. With Brayton and Irons moving back to DE we'll most likely see Kelly at the 3 off the bench or moving in and out and rotating with Brayton, Irons and Sapp.

We still need a guy to spell Burgess, and maybe Brayton and Irons will be called on to do that as well, but I'm certain Raiders fans would like to see a guy with a little more burst than anyone else we've seen so far. Maybe Riddle is the guy, or maybe Sam Williams will get the shot Al Davis thought he should get with his hand on the ground. Many possibilities.

Burgess talked to Jasper about the Eagles...

Defensive tackle wanders back to the flock

EAGLES' OFFSEASON. Ed Jasper, drafted by the Birds in 1997, returns to the nest.

Friday, April 07, 206
By NICK FIERRO

The nine-year veteran defensive tackle had the Eagles at the top of his extremely short list from the moment he became a free agent, thanks to rave reviews provided from former Oakland Raiders teammate Derrick Burgess.

So the 33-year-old Jasper wasted little time signing a one-year contract once he cleared his physical. This fall will mark his second tour of duty with the Eagles, who originally drafted him out of Texas A& M in 1997. Jasper played two seasons for the Eagles before joining the Atlanta Falcons, where he stayed for six seasons before moving to Oakland last year.

"I had opportunities somewhere else at the time," he said about leaving Philadelphia. "Now my opportunity is to come back here and try to win a championship. That's what everybody wants. True, it took me seven years of wandering around to realize that, but I will take a ring where I can get it."

Jasper has appeared in 118 games, 60 as a starter. He has collected 402 tackles, 17½ sacks, five forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries.

Particularly appealing to him is defensive coordinator Jim Johnson's rotation system, which consists of four players sharing the two inside spots in the 4-3.

"For me, that's great," Jasper said. "I spent a lot of years in Atlanta playing almost every snap. The problem with playing every snap is you can't play 110 percent every play if you play every snap. If you have someone to rotate with, who will come in and play just as good as you do, it makes all the difference in the world. It makes your defensive line a better line."

Although Jasper spent most of his career as a nose tackle in a 3-4, this defense will not be much of an adjustment for him.

"There's different ways you can play a 3-4," he said. "You can play a gap-control 3-4 or a two-gap 3-4. In Atlanta, we played a gap-control 3-4, which is almost the same technique as playing in a 4-3 because you're playing (off the center). When you play in the two-gap, you just take the big (offensive linemen) and hold them off the line, hold them up, let everybody else make the plays.

"I'm not a two-gap guy, for sure."

And he's not ready for retirement, which he briefly thought about after last season. Jasper reconsidered because he didn't want to fade away into obscurity.

"I think, more than anything, it's just will," he said. "No one remembers guys that just played. The guys that are remembered are the guys that win championships. No matter how good you were when you played and no matter what else you had done, if you didn't win, then no one knows how good you were."

Here is some information on Keith Adams....

Jordan Woy, the agent for free agent linebacker Keith Adams, said five teams remain in the mix to sign the veteran, including the Redskins. Washington is not the front-runner at this point, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, but has maintained interest and brought Adams in for a visit Friday.

Adams also has visited Arizona, Oakland and Carolina, according to sources, but thus far has been seeking a signing bonus exceeding what Washington is offering. The Redskins have been looking to sign experienced players for close to the veteran minimum, as they did with free agent cornerback Kenny Wright recently, and have kept the lines of communication open with free agent linebacker Warrick Holdman as well.

Woy said that Adams expects to make a decision on his new team in the next day or two. The Redskins are $3.8 million under the salary cap, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

We signed Lance Johnstone....

Johnstone agrees to two-year deal with Raiders

Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Ten-year veteran defensive end Lance Johnstone, one of the NFL's best situational pass rushers over the course of his career and certainly one of the top players remaining in the unrestricted free-agent market, on Wednesday reached a contract agreement with the Oakland Raiders, ESPN.com has learned.

Johnstone

The deal, for two years, returns Johnstone to the franchise with which he originally began his NFL career, as a second-round choice in the 1996 draft. Financial details were not immediately available.

Johnstone, 32, played five seasons with the Raiders (1996-2000) and then signed with the Minnesota Vikings, for whom he played five years (2001-05). Minnesota had made what was believed to be a one-year offer in an effort to retain Johnstone, and the veteran pass rusher also generated interest from several other clubs as well.

Securing a proven pass-rusher like Johnstone, who posted 7½ sacks in 2005, should provide the Raiders some intriguing possibilities on third down. Oakland already boasts the 2005 league sack champion in right end Derrick Burgess, who had 16 quarterback takedowns last season, and will now be able to bring even more pressure off the edge.

The combination of Burgess and Johnstone attacking the pocket from opposite sides on third down figures to enhance the performance of both veteran ends. After Burgess, the Raiders didn't have any other defenders in 2005 with more than five sacks and no ends with more than two sacks.

In his 10 seasons in the league, Johnstone has registered 10 or more sacks four times, including 10 sacks in 2003 and 11 in 2004. The former Temple standout has posted five or more sacks in seven seasons. There has been no discernable dropoff in Johnstone's level of play or, more important, in his quickness, which is his forte.

Johnstone has appeared in 155 games, missing just five contests during his NFL tenure, and he has 380 tackles, 21 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and two interceptions.

Rupert

Man this is an excellent acquisition from two perspectives. Not only does it give us an additional pass rusher on 3rd downs and when up by double digits late in a game (yeah right), but it gives us a credible backup for Burgess should he go down to injury. It also solidifies the DL and allows us to focus on other positions with the #1 pick.

However, it really doesn't change anything when it comes to draft day. Al knows who he wants and will do whatever he has to to get him. It would allow us to look at OT or OLB or S instead of chasing after Williams. The more sure-fire a prospect Williams is, and the more I think about it, the more likely it is that the Raiders won't try to draft him.

Bah! Who knows anything for certain when it comes to the Raiders draft strategy?

Throw in a roving Tommy Kelly and IFFF Warren Sapp has anthing left in the proverbial tank, this 'D' will be able to generate consistent pressure with the front-4. How novel would that be?

This could/should also mask our deficiency at OLB and Safety.

I totally agree. We've got Brayton and Irons supposedly back at DE, so it's not urgent to get Williams, but there is no-one with his potential on the roster. Hamilton is likely to ride his contract into the sunset. He's a great guy to have on the roster, and both he and Burgess would do wonders for the development of a guy like Williams. Imagine the consumate 3-4 end and last year's sack leader tutoring a guy who could be both wrapped up in one? Out-freaking-standing. Do it Al, DO IT!

Drafting Williams would allow us to throw Kelly inside where his ability to defeat blockers would be put several steps closer to the ball. Do it Al, DO IT!

It's not every year you get to draft a freakishly talented disruptive force on the DL. This guy isn't an undersidzed Jason Taylor, or a 3-4-type end, he's a Reggie White-kind of guy who has the size to be 3-4 with the pass rushing ability of an elephant backer (old term for what became the rush end). Do it Al, DO IT!

Does he lack the fire? It doesn't sound like it, but if he does, shove a firecracker up his ass and light it every play. Eventually, he'll blow up. ;)

In other words, do it Al, DO IT!

I was listening to Mel Kiper (yeah I know) yesterday on ESPN radio and he said that over the years the one position that has been the biggest flop in the draft (high) is defensive end and then defensive tackle.

Makes some sense in that a college DE is rarely if ever facing an NFL quality OT etc. So their numbers and pure power are somewhat overrated. But how else can they be graded.

Anyway for what's it's worth that is what they were talking about.

From what I have seen, however, Williams has all the tool and measurables to be a success. When you consider that 50% of 1st round draft picks flop I guess a guy like Williams would be worth the gamble. DE like Mario don’t grow on trees. How it’ll all translate in the pros is 'ya know...``the mother of all crap shoots". ;)

I still have this feeling Al wants to move up and make a big splash and get the Raiders in the headlines. You know Al.

Keith Adams....

Panthers sign linebacker Adams

April 13, 2006

The Carolina Panthers have signed unrestricted free agent linebacker Keith Adams from the Philadelphia Eagles, the team announced Thursday.
Adams, 27, started 16 games for Philadelphia in 2005 and recorded a career-high 101 tackles. He also added 18 special teams tackles after ranking second on the Eagles with 24 special teams tackles in 2004 and leading the team with 30 in 2003.

Originally a seventh-round draft choice by Tennessee in 2001, Adams (5-11, 223 pounds) played his rookie year with Dallas before being claimed off waivers by Philadelphia midway through the 2002 campaign. In five NFL seasons, he has played in 67 regular season games with 23 starts and has posted 185 tackles, three passes defensed, and three forced fumbles.

I hear what you're saying RR, but once I saw his height and weight, I knew we weren't going to sign him. 5-11 233? That's a problem the front office can't get over. With TE's getting taller every day, a physical mismatch like that won't fly on the Raiders defense. I'm not saying he couldn't have helped us, I'm just saying he'd have been special teams at best, and why not bring in a kid who's 6-2 240 to do that?

Back in (Silver and) Black

April 13, 2006

The Oakland Raiders have signed free agent defensive end Lance Johnstone, the team announced. Johnstone, originally selected by the Raiders in the second round of the 1996 NFL Draft, spent the past five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.

The former Temple University standout has chalked up 70 quarterback sacks during his 10-year NFL career. During his first tour of duty with the Silver and Black, the 6'4", 250-pounder played in 92 games and amassed 29 sacks with a career-high of 11 in 1998.

During his five seasons with the Vikings, Johnstone suited up for 79 league games and tallied 41 quarterback takedowns. He matched his single-season career-high of 11 in 2004.

In all, Johnstone has played in 155 league games and also has two interceptions, five fumble recoveries, has scored four defensive touchdowns, and has recorded four seasons with at least 10 sacks.

Here is something on LJ....

Nostalgia being what it is in Oakland these days, the Raiders reached into their recent past with the re-acquisition of defensive end Lance Johnstone.

Johnstone's signing gives Oakland a bookend situational pass rusher to go along with Derrick Burgess, the free-agent prize of 2005 who led the NFL in sacks with 16.

Johnstone, 32, was drafted by the Raiders out of Temple in the second round in 1996. His selection represented a victory for the scouting department and the judgment of Al Davis, given that Johnstone had played primarily as a stand-up linebacker in a perennially poor college program.

With the Raiders, Johnstone wore a linebacker's number — 51 — but was converted to a rush end at 6-foot-4 and generously listed at 250 pounds.

Johnstone's playing time increased in 1997, when he batted down five passes and had 3 1/2 sacks, and he blossomed in the next two seasons with 21 sacks in two years.

Following the 1999 season, the Raiders awarded Johnstone with a seven-year contract extension, which would have been worth $35 million had it reached its conclusion.

But the Raiders coaching staff also wanted Johnstone bigger to avoid wearing down at the end of the season. Johnstone returned with an expanded waistline, remained comparatively slender everywhere else, and battled injuries while posting just 3 1/2 sacks. He lost his starting position to free agent Regan Upshaw.

Oakland opted to waive Johnstone rather than pay a scheduled bonus, and instead opted for Miami defensive end Trace Armstrong, who led the NFL in sacks with 16 1/2.

The end result was not satisfying for the Raiders. Armstrong suffered a torn Achilles' tendon and never played a major role for the Raiders.

Johnstone, however, signed with Minnesota as a free agent and found the fast indoor track of the Metrodome to his liking. He had 41 sacks in five seasons — giving him 70 for his career.

Although not likely to start, the Raiders believe Johnstone can give them an additional push on passing downs working opposite Burgess. Bobby Hamilton and Tommy Kelly, both players who are strong at the point of attack, remain on the roster.

Some more on Johnstone.....

With four defensive touchdowns — three as a Raider and one with Minnesota — Lance Johnstone's career total equals the combined total of defensive touchdowns for all defenders on the Oakland roster.

Newly acquired cornerback Duane Starks returned interceptions for touchdowns with Baltimore and Arizona, Warren Sapp had an interception return for a touchdown as a Tampa Bay rookie, and safety Jarrod Cooper recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown last season.

From 2003...

It's hard to ignore Joe Hall

By Jason Whitlock | Jul 23, 2003

The Chiefs have the best running back in football, two potential Hall of Famers on their offensive line, a Hall of Fame tight end, a munchkin wide receiver with swivel and quicks and the game's most feared playbook.

So why do I come to practice every day and lock in on Joe Hall, an anonymous free agent with a checkered past?

It's impossible to take your eyes off Joe Hall. Come up here and try it. You can find him anywhere, during any drill. Special teams, stretching, blitz pick-up. I swear I heard Joe Hall's footsteps when I was sitting in the port-a-potty.

Joe Hall is everywhere. Meet him and you instantly think NFL player. He's 6 feet 1, 300 pounds, extra wide shoulders, barrel chest, tattoos decorate his forearms. He looks like guard Brian Waters' younger brother.

Hall is impossible to ignore because he wears No. 46, lines up in the backfield and turns the corner like Tony Stewart's ChevyXXX.

There's a good chance Hall won't even make the team. He plays the same position as Tony Richardson, the Chiefs' picture-perfect fullback. T-Rich is backed up by Omar Easy, a talented second-year player.

Joe Hall has so much talent it doesn't matter that the Chiefs don't have room for him. He could force Dick Vermeil and Carl Peterson to make room.

Cutting Joe Hall would be a tragedy.

"I told Joe Hall," Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders said, "that if he doesn't play in the NFL, there's only one person to blame. Joe Hall."

Kansas State fans realize Joe Hall could screw this up. He could have been the best Wildcats running back this side of Darren Sproles. Hall spent three years on K-State's campus as a football player and 2 1/2 years in Bill Snyder's doghouse.

No discipline. He didn't like to go to class, push away from the kitchen table, work out, accept coaching or advice. He ate, slept and wild-ed his way out of Snyder's backfield rotation, off the team and out of a bright NFL future.

In 19 games split over the 1999 and 2001 seasons, Hall rushed for 864 yards, nine TDs and earned a reputation as a problem child.

"It was a lot of immaturity factors," Hall said Tuesday. "It was the first time away from home. First time my father didn't have an actual grasp on me. I was only 19 years old, just acting out most of the time. Four years later I'm a totally different person. I finally know how to work hard."

And he's finally accepted the fact that he's a fullback. He rebelled at K-State because he says Snyder's coaching staff promised him he wouldn't have to play fullback. Hall fancied himself a 310-pound college tailback. He played tailback and power forward at 265 pounds in high school. He was a 280-pound tailback in junior college.

When he arrived in Manhattan tipping the scales at 300-plus pounds, K-State's coaches asked him to stick a hand in the dirt and learn how to be a lead blocker. Hall felt as if he was lied to.

"I grew up in a house where if somebody told me they were going to do something, they did it" Hall said. "It was a culture shock. It was something I'd never experienced before. I didn't know how to deal with it. So I did the best that I could, what I thought was right at the time. It was a total bonehead mistake."

Hall admits that part of the culture shock was his newfound freedom being away from his dad/best friend, Joe Hall Sr. Hall acknowledged that his bad-boy behavior was due to peer pressure.

"I conformed to what I thought was cool, and it got me in a lot of trouble" Hall said. "My mom cries when she hears people call me (a bad guy). She knows what they sacrificed to make me what I am. The things I did at Kansas State and things I've done in my life are not in my character. I'm not a bad guy."

Hall ended up missing the entire 2000 season and playing sparingly in 2001. He never got his weight or his behavior under control.

"I thought I was getting back at the people for telling me things were going to be a certain way," Hall said. "I ended up messing up myself. That's a childish act. I'm not a child anymore. I know that was the dumbest thing I could possibly do. I'm past it."

He signed a free-agent deal with the St. Louis Rams last off-season. The Rams cut him before training camp. Hall re-enrolled at K-State. He'd never completed his degree. Snyder told Hall that if he demonstrated any maturity and finished up his classwork, Snyder would use his connections to get Hall another NFL tryout.

Hall finished his schooling in April and signed a contract with the Chiefs on April 18. After getting down to 285 pounds during off-season conditioning, Hall reported to training camp pushing three bills and freely admitting he's not in top condition.

"He needs to lose 12 to 13 pounds," Dick Vermeil said. "It's all about maturity. There's no doubt he can play in the NFL. He can even be something special."

Hall said: "Me losing weight isn't a problem. As long as I'm working out, my weight isn't a problem."

The Chiefs aren't giving up on Hall. Vermeil said he sees signs of Hall maturing. Vermeil and Saunders believe Hall's hands are so soft and his feet so quick that he could double as the Chiefs' third tight end. The Chiefs want to make room for Joe Hall. Chiefs fans should pray that Hall has matured enough to seize this opportunity.

"I don't want to go home," Hall said. "If they say, `Well, we don't have a fullback spot so we want to try you at tight end,' then so be it. If they want to try me at defensive end, so be it. I'll do anything to stay on the team."

Both sound like interesting acquisitions.

That's the only Joe Hall I can find reference to. I did say I wanted a blocking fullback. Geez! He's like fridge in the backfield AND can REALLY carry the rock. Outstanding! As if Foschi at 6-4 270 wasn't huge in the backfield.

Spikes could be worth something. If nothing else he'll push for starting time and be valuable depth.

Raiders | Not likely to trade up; may choose a quarterback if available
Tue, 18 Apr 2006 16:36:40 -0700

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports it appears the Oakland Raiders will not trade up in the NFL Draft to select USC QB Matt Leinart or Texas QB Vince Young. However, it will be hard for them to pass on either one if they fall to the Raiders at No. 7. It's not known how the Raiders feel about Vanderbilt QB Jay Cutler.

I'm so sick and tired of all the pre-draft speculation. It's painfully obvious that the so-called experts, including us fans, have no freakin' clue what the Raiders will or won't do with this draft. These morons are throwing out every theory and possibility imaginable so that they can then claim to have been "right all along".

Rubbish - all of this shit.

It's true that the speculation is running wild. Now the "experts" are saying Reggie Bush maybe not be a lock for the number one pick. That would be interesting. Sooner or later somebody is going to be right. LOL.

No shit "Mighty Joe". Dude talks about maturing. Let's see if he can get his weight down to 265. I'd tell him he could carry the rock in short yardage at 265. Of course, to prevent a meltdown, you'd have to back up your word.

Looks like Spikes is veteran depth at that salary, not potential starter. Of course Art won't rule anything out. Al, on the other hand, might. Still he let his highly paid acquisitions lose the starting job to Barry Sims, undrafted and earning a pittance, and didn't force his newly acquired 1st round choices (plural ladies and germs) to supplant Sims either.

Tongue....

Tongue considers retiring as he waits

By DANNY MARTIN

The phone hasn't rung lately for Reggie Tongue and no one has knocked on his door so hard that the hinges came off.

The Lathrop High School graduate, though, is prepared if no National Football League team offers him an opportunity to play strong safety for an 11th season.

"I'll probably go ahead and retire ... there's no need to sit around waiting," Tongue said Wednesday afternoon from his home in Redmond, Wash.

The desire to play is still there, as he recently told his agent, Vann McElroy of Houston, Texas.

"He wanted to know if I still wanted to play and I said 'Of course, I want to play,'" Tongue said. But it's been nearly 1 1/2 months since he heard from McElroy, a former NFL safety.

The 6-foot, 204-pounder is one of those competitive, hard-working athletes who desire a long career in the NFL.

There are many NFL players who would love to match, or exceed, the longevity of former Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell Green and San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jerry Rice, who each spent 20 seasons in the league.

There are NFL players who are realistic, too, and the 33-year-old Tongue is among them.

"Those guys were fortunate to keep playing and teams kept calling them," Tongue said. Green spent his entire career as a Redskin while Rice also played for the Oakland Raiders and was in the Denver Broncos training camp when he announced his retirement last year.

"If nobody is calling me, I've got to move on," the former standout for Oregon State University said. "I've got to move on; it's a no-brainer. If nobody wants you, you just move on with life."

Moving on can be easier said than done after a career that has included four seasons each with the Kansas City Chiefs (1996-99) and Seattle Seahawks (2000-03), one season with the New York Jets (2004) and last season with the Raiders.

Unless Boise State left offensive tackle Daryn Colledge of North Pole goes in the first round or is a high second-round pick in next weekend's NFL Draft, Tongue's second-round, 58th-overall selection by the Chiefs in 1996 will also be the highest an Alaskan has been taken.

Tongue, though, sees his career as incomplete despite 690 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 15 interceptions (with three returned for touchdowns) and 13 forced fumbles. There is no Super Bowl ring on either of his hands and there's no Pro Bowl selection or All-Pro recognition.

"I'm extremely fortunate I played as long, played as hard and stayed as healthy as I did," said Tongue. "I try not to be greedy but I'm mad that I never made it to the Pro Bowl, even though there were a couple of years which it seemed I would, and I never had the chance to play for a (Super Bowl) ring.

"That will always bother me."

He was mad, too, last season when he sustained a season-ending injury to his left knee after playing only six games with the Raiders.

Tongue tore his anterior cruciate ligament while running downfield to attempt a tackle on a kickoff during a 33-21 home loss to the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 27. Tongue was trying to avoid a block by a Dolphin, but as he made a move and pushed off on his left foot, it went into an uneven part of the field, which he said may have been a hole.

The knee hyperextended, and Raiders trainers and medical staff confirmed it when they examined him on the sideline.

"They kept yanking on it and pushing it, and they asked me if I could jog on it," Tongue said. "I could walk on it, but not jog. Then they said it's definitely a torn ACL."

That was his first knee injury in the NFL--in his previous nine seasons, Tongue missed only three games because of injuries.

"It sucked," Tongue said of the knee injury. "All of a sudden, I get a fresh start with a different team ... it's crazy. It shows you how much something can happen and how much control you have over what happens."

It's a good description, too, of the waiting game he's playing.

College: Clemson

Hometown: Swansea, S.C.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a lean, tall, muscular frame … Quick off the snap and shows the ability to use his hands effectively to escape the cut blocks … Has good ball-reaction skills, dropping off in coverage quickly … Keeps his feet and strings plays wide with his lateral agility … Stays low in his pads and extends his arms properly to wrap and secure the ball carrier … Quick off the edge and does a good job of protecting his legs … Shows power in his upfield rush.

Negatives: Has struggled to maintain and add weight to his frame … A lack of bulk is the major reason he gets engulfed by the larger blockers … Little stiff in his straight-line charge, causing him to struggle when trying to locate the quarterback … Needs to play with better leverage as he gets cut too often … Inability to generate a power charge results in him getting washed out at the point of attack … Plays with his hand off the ground and may be better suited for linebacker due to his difficulty in adding weight.

We also signed Kelvin Garmon....(old article)

Huge Man, Big Plans

By Zac Jackson
March 31, 2004

Kelvin Garmon still doesn’t know if he’ll line up at left guard or right guard for the Browns this fall.

This much is for sure: He’ll be easy to find.

Garmon (listed at 6-foot-2, 350) isn’t just big. He’s gargantuan. And he arrived at Browns Headquarters Monday eager to do big things with his new team.

Garmon, a five-year veteran, signed a three-year deal with the Browns last week after spending the last season and a half with San Diego.

The Browns told Garmon they wanted a massive, powerful pulling guard to open holes and create running lanes for Lee Suggs and William Green. Garmon, impressed by the abilities of Suggs and Green and the Browns’ previous acquisitions of QB Jeff Garcia and FB Terelle Smith, feels Cleveland is the best place for him to take his career to the next level.

“I want to be a leader for the offensive line,” he said. “I want to be a guy they can lean on. My mentality on Sundays is pretty nasty. That’s the thing I want to bring to the offensive line here. It’s going to be a more aggressive offensive line. You want defenses to not want to play against you and that’s one thing I’ve always had. Nobody likes to get hit in the mouth on every play, no matter how tough they are.”

Garmon, 27, played under Browns defensive coordinator Dave Campo and defensive line coach Andre Patterson when Campo was the Cowboys’ head coach. He was traded to San Diego in October 2002 after starting the first five games of the season at right guard for Dallas. He started at left guard for the Chargers for the remainder of 2002 and all of 2003.

His respect for both Campo and Patterson—and his continued relationship with Patterson—played a big role in Garmon landing with the Browns. After visiting Browns Headquarters and also weighing an offer from Detroit, Garmon decided to heed Patterson’s advice.

“Coach Patterson called me every day,” Garmon said. “He said, ‘Kelvin, this system is for you. With this system you can be a premiere guard in this league.’

“I let him know what was going on with other teams. He let me know what was going on here and it worked out great.

“I felt if I got here (Cleveland), I was going to fit into the offense and the scheme that they run. Coach (Butch Davis) mentioned they want to get back to a guard pulling, and that’s what I do best.”

Garmon will marry Megan Peterson, whom he met in his second year at Baylor, in Dallas this Saturday. After honeymooning in Cancun, he’ll return to Cleveland and rejoin his teammates in the Browns’ offseason conditioning program April 17th.

Not surprising that we pick up another player the NFL has dropped from its list of players. McNeal might be worth something as a backer. I would guess that's why we signed him. But then again, we are short of pass rushing DE's.

McNeal is one year $385,000 and Garmon is one year $585,000.

Here is a short article on Garmon...

Raiders sign mammoth guard

By: Nicholas Hunter

Date: Apr 20, 2006

The Oakland Raiders supplied much needed depth to their offensive line on Thursday when they signed Kelvin Garmon, a hulking 350-pound lineman who has plenty of starts under his belt.

Kelvin Garmon was originally a 7th round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1999 draft from Baylor University.
He has started in 50 games since first getting playing time with the Boys in 2001. Since then, Garmon has been seen in San Diego and Cleveland.

He played well in San Diego but struggled through injuries in Cleveland and was termed a dissapointment.

Surprisingly agile for his weight, the 6-foot-2 Garmon will look to add not only bulk but also skill to the Raiders line.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

Clearly the Raiders are banking heavily on Art Shell and Jackie Slater having a big impact with this offensive line. Personally, I think it's a big gamble because the "talent cupboard" appears pretty damn bare IMHO.

Robert Gallery and Jake Grove need to show me something in 2006.....

Robert Gallery and Jake Grove need to show me something in 2006.....'Ya know, I don't know who is to blame for the debacle on the offensive line. I put much of the blame on Norv Turner for not putting his foot down when all the musical chairs started. It appears we're going to do now (two years late) what should have been done right at the start of the 2004 season .. Gallery at LT, Sims at LG, Grove at center, Walker at RT and ???? at RG. We fucked it up and in the process did who knows how much damage to the psyche of these young players and Turner let it happen.

I believe Art Shell will get this OL squared away. We stil need help at guard IMO and I hope we can address that in the draft on day one (second or third round).

I believe these players were so frustrated and confused that they never were able to settle in and play without wondering what was coming next and tot wsome extent I thingk they quit on the coaching staff. That friggin' zone blocking scheme was a horrible mistake. I think Art will get back to basics and play smash mouth football. That all starts with the OL. We'll see.

This is exactly why I'm leaning towards the idea of Winston Justice with our first pick. Gallery appears destined to the left side, leaving the right side open for Justice to play his "natural position". Barring the unlikely scenario that we move up for Mario Williams or Leinert, getting this line together should be priortiy A-1 IMO.

Anyone who's been around me long enough knows I hate the "natural position" B.S. It's an absolute crock of shit. If you're an athlete you should be able to play anywhere on the line. Period. If you can't then you're nothing more than someone playing out of habit.

What if a player wasn't asked to play certain techniques in college? Are we going to have zone blockers and man blockers now? So-and-so is a zone left guard, don't draft him if you use a man scheme and need him on the right side? Jeezus H my friends.

I don't know why we've forgotten how our OL got screwed so quickly. We went from a man scheme to a zone scheme. The zone scheme requires quite a bit more precision from the line as a whole. It requires more reading and reacting than the traditional man scheme. It's a lateral scheme that requires bucket/drop steps.

The scheme can be overloaded against inexperienced lines, and teams did that to us frequently last season. In fact, I didn't see defenses trying to overload veteran zone teams as often as they tried against us for one simple reason. The vets knew how to handle the overload often only letting one guy loose. Overloading the Raiders often resulted in jailbreaks on the overloaded side. Teams were just doing what worked.

Regarding Gallery and LT versus RT. It's pretty simple. The guy is big enough to handle the bull rushers, he just doesn't exhibit the proper technique to do it on a regular basis (drop the ass and drive the legs kid, punch through the defender). The guy is supposed to have quick enough feet to handle the speed rushers, but he's demonstrated in the NFL a tendency to reach instead of move his feet when he's beaten by a speed move.

Bottom line, he hasn't been disciplined in his techniques and is living down to the negative reports about him and not living up to his positive press. Bottom line. It doesn't matter if we put him at his f#@king "natural position" cuz he's still going to reach for the speed rushers instead of locking on and driving them out. He might look better at drive blocking because he'll have more of a size advantage, but if he stays tall he'll wind up reaching, losing leverage, and getting beaten. So it has precious little to do with "natural" f#@king "position" and everything to do with his technique.

Ah bull.

IMO Gallery was given too much too soon to think about and it screwed him up. Now the repair process starts. I hope he can come around and be a pro bowl tackle within the next two years!

I understand what you're saying Rupert but changing to a scheme that requires more precision and asking young inexperienced players to accept a new unfamiliar postion plus a complicated blocking scheme and add the musical chairs -- that dog won't hunt. JMO. :)

Or is it just possible Gallery and Grove aren't the players we thought they were? Yep that's a possiblity. :o
