Broncos fill out defensive coaching staff

Former Broncos assistant coach Ed Donatell, who went on to be defensive coordinator in Green Bay and Atlanta, has returned to the Broncos as defensive backs coach.

MOBILE, Ala. — Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels, with the help of defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, has filled out his defensive staff in recent days.

Wayne Nunnely, whose contract was not renewed by the San Diego Chargers, will coach the defensive line, Raiders assistant Don Martindale will coach linebackers and longtime NFL assistant Ed Donatell the defensive backs.

McDaniels could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Martindale had interviewed with Raiders brass earlier this month after his contract expired — the Raiders routinely sign their people to one-year deals that must renewed — but the team publicly denied a report he had interviewed to be head coach.

Some in the league said Martindale had hoped to be the Raiders’ defensive coordinator.

Donatell served as a defensive coordinator with the Packers and Falcons earlier in his coaching career but spent this past season as the University of Washington’s defensive coordinator.

He is also a former Broncos assistant, having worked on Mike Shanahan’s staff during the team’s two Super Bowl wins during a 1995-99 stint.

Donatell endured one of the more difficult seasons in college football history in 2008. The Huskies defense finished 116th out of 119 Division I teams, leading to the firing of head coach Tyrone Willingham and all his assistants, including Donatell.

Donatell has also coached the secondary for the New York Jets.

With the flurry of hires McDaniels has made on the offensive side of the ball — adding offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and wide receivers coach Adam Gase and retaining offensive line coach Rick Dennison and running backs coach Bobby Turner from Shanahan’s staff — the Broncos staff is almost entirely in plac

If we stay with Al's 43, there's still some coaches with past connections to us:

Mike Waufle- Giants D-line coach, ex-Raiders D-line coach
Jim Haslett- Ex Raiders LB coach
Chuck Pagano- Ravens DB coach, ex-Raiders DB coach

Chuck Cecil is thought to be ready and he's a Cali guy and I think a Raiders fan growing up...

Forgot about Haslett.

Wonder if Cecil could light a fire under that pussy Huff...

And here we sit with Herrera denying that we talked to anyone for anything.

"Al can't talk right now. How could he talk to anyone about anything?"

Maybe Al is going to let the head coach choose his own coordinators like most everyone wants?....

It's frustrating basically doing nothing, but if Al is really waiting to try and hire Haley/Grimm/Arians, then our hands are kind of tied...

Do we go ahead and fill out the coaching staff and let the new coach work on his own staff next offseason? Or do we wait till the coach is aboard and let him scramble?...

All I know is that I'd feel better about things if the Chiefs would go ahead and say they are bringing Herm back for another year.... I just feel like that cocksucker Pioli is waiting to swoop on someone we may be targeting...

The Ketchup and Mustard are targeting Haley IMO.

Bring in Haley, draft Crabtree and sign that douchebag QB from New England and they got an offense huh?

I can't find a decent picture of Hererra to try and Photoshop that Iraqui uniform on.

hell we don't need the douchebag Cassell. Russell is our future and he'll work well for us.

Carter/Crabtree/JLH/Schilens/Shields is a decent enough WR core.

i think he was talking about KC when he said sign Cassell, draft crabs and hire Haley

i doubt he was talking about us, considering we are highly unlikely to do any one of those things...:(

yeah, but adding those pieces would definitely ive them a head start towards a pretty badass offense, especially with Haley calling the plays

as it is right now, hiring Haley and drafting crabtree would be a dream scenario, but sadly i think theres a much better chance that KC pulls that off and we're stuck with Cable and Malcolm Jenkins

Yeah, I was thinking of a scenario that would give Haley something similar to work with in KC as he has with 'Zona.

IMO if they put that together, maybe hit on another O-lineman in the 2nd or 3rd round, they'd have plenty on offense to get things going. They already have a versatile backfield, even though Larry's an asshole.

It'll be interesting to see how the absence of Martindale affects the team, if it does at all. A lot of people in the organziation and outside of Oakland were pretty high on him. But it's one of those situations where was he coaching up the players effectively or was he, as a coach, blessed with exceptional talent (see T. Howard and, to an extent, K. Morrison)? I do know the 'backers really liked playing for him but we'll see what he can do with a very questionable unit in terms of talent out in Denver.

I wouldn't mind Haslett getting back here at all now.
