View Full Version : Fassell interviewing...
For the Toronto Argonauts vacant HC position today...
Its all over the Canadian sports channels how they might get a 'high profile' NFL coach to the CFL.
Has anyone ever done that? HC'ed in the NFL and then dropped to the CFL?
I know Trestman just HC'ed the Alouettes to a Grey Cup, but lost to John Hufnagel who was a QB position coach for the Pats super bowl team(s).
Kind of funny hey?

Sounds like Mr. Fassell is pretty desperate for a gig. He probably figures the Raiders is his only chance in the NFL. But I wonder if Al already told him to keep looking elsewhere?

I kinda would at least have ole Fassell available as a stand bye... I'd hate to be caught with our pants down and without choices like in the year we had to hustle Shell out of mothballs...
I wonder if we'd have any interest in Charlie Weis if he's let go by ND as speculated, or has the bloom come completely off his rose for Raider fans?... There were a lot of people that did want him before he hooked up with the Irish Catholics...
Maybe head coach to be Rob Ryan can convince his friend Weis to come in and be his Offensive Coordinator... :D

I'm not sure Touch Jesus is gonna eat all of Weis' salary.
Besides I don't see the Fat alter boy showing up on Al's doorstep asking for another cup of soup.

If Weis did get dumped by ND, we sure wouldn't have to pay him much, consider all the bread the Irish will have to shell out to him.
I'm not totally opposed to bringing Cable back, though, to be honest. Just hire him an offensive coordinator quickly.

if Cable calls games like that Denver one consistantly, i wouldnt mind naming him OC, but i'd like to see this team play hard throughout the season and win some games before i give him the job
that being said, damn near this entire staff needs to be overhauled from coordinators to position coaches to quality control

I think Al will be leery of retaining Cable. Sure he called a nice game against Denver but it's hard to know how much of it was Cable's game plan and how much of it was playing a relatively average Denver team. On the other hand maybe it's taken Cable this long to get his thoughts in order. I just don't know. Most of the time we've played a good team we've been embarrassed. Should be interesting to see how we come back against Kansas City Sunday. Two more strong games against the Chefs and Chargers might say enough about Cable one way or the other.
In the end I think Al will make a coaching change at the end of this season. Who? I have no clue.

Actually, with the manner in which Raider players appear to be rallying, it seem to me that Tom Cable is more HC material than OC material.
The guys have NOT quit despite all the fucked up distractions and his "personality type" might be the right fit for the organiazation. I'd prefer a cerebral type at OC, perhaps Charlie Weiss or even Marc Trestman....

Cable is gonna have to win this job by getting is back into this AFC west shit race with some wins.
If he beats KC & San Diego, Al might be hard pressed to can him. Not to put the cart before the horse, but if he accomplished that, when was the last time that we beat all three AFCW teams in the same season, including a sweep of the Chefs?

I still think it's more about offensive production for Al at this point... Al has watched the offense struggle for the past 3 or 4 years now... If he doesn't feel that Cable is capable of opening up the offense, and thus far he hasn't demonstrated that capability, then Al will look elsewhere.... Al isn't going to have the kind of money invested in JaMarcus, McFadden, Fargas etc, plus what he'll put into it this offseason, only to watch us take the air out of the ball... He's going to bring in someone capable of putting a viable passing game in place... I doubt that the production Josh McDaniels has been able to get out of a very average Matt Cassell working with virtually no run game has gone unnoticed by Al, not that he already didn't have Al's attention with the 20+ TD's Moss got last year... That said I believe Al really screwed the pooch with the way Kiffin was handled... We'd have to offer to vastly overpay to even get the attention of a guy like McDaniels...

And following up on that HBloy, Al has never paid head coaches well. I don't see him paying anybody $4-5+ million per season. The top HC's now are making $6+ million per season. Holmgren is getting $7 million I think. Just think what a guy like Cowher will command when he's ready to go again. A guy like McDaniel will get somewhere around $3-4 million and he'd probably want $5-6 million per season up front (:p) from the Raiders.

Unless we do some major pr repair work this offseason, there's no way a guy like McDaniel will even sniff Oakland. Especially working for a guy who will try to beat you out of your contract if things go south. That's just fucked up especially in light of the ridiculous deals he gave J Walker and D Hall.
I'm leaning more to keeping Cable because of the continuity thing. Let him oversee the OL duties and bring in a decent OC. Maybe a Charlie Weiss if he's shit canned as advertised. Then make a full court press for a DC like Charlie Strong from Florida. Ryan has had 5 years to improve this defense and we're consistently at the bottom of the NFL each year sans the fluke year.
Ryan has done a good job this year. Once the Hall cancer was gone things really fell into place. We have a killer pass defense now.
The O has shot the D in the head more often than not this year.
I wouldn't mind seeing Ryan return. So sue me.

Can't say I disagree with RHC on this one.
I think our defense really just needs a stud DE and a stud MLB, then move Morrison back outside.
