So, what'd you think of his first exposure?
He doesn't seem like a Romeo Crennel type simpleton, or a re-tread, rah-rah, douchebag Like Joe Bugel, talking about all the SuperBowls he's going to win
I actually kinda liked what he had to say, even if it was pretty basic. Seemed reasonably sharp, and like a guy that's keeping a lid on alittle fire.
Five coaches in six years... fuck me.
I missed Al's rant about firing Kiffin, but I caught the Cable interview.
My impression is that this dude has attitude. He's a rip-their-head-off kind of football guy. Meat and potatoes. No bullshit here.
How do you finish games? "You don't let up." I'm convinced he has the killer instinct.
He has respect for the organization and the players. He's genuinely grateful to have this chance. A lot of positive energy and confidence.
That's my impression of the guy.

I dunno that I'm convinced of anything, but I liked that he talked about the guys knowing how to throw their bodies around
Positive first impression.

He grew up a Raiders fan and called the job a dream. He seems to understand Al is in charge so that shouldnt be a problem. Im just happy he coaches OL and that he has and old school approach of running the ball to win. I didnt mind the fact we were a run first team, but we had 0 balance.

I'll admit that I was pleasantly surprised... I kind of expected the fire and brimstone from an o-line coach, but I didn't expect him to be quite as intelligent as he came off... He was definitely on point with every question that was thrown at him and he seems to already have processed a definitive game plan going forward...
We'll see how he does on game days, but on first blush he has the kind of presence and natural charisma that makes for a good leader and head coach...
I'm a little worried about him pulling double duty as the Big Kahuna and O-line coach though...

I guess I really didn't know much about him.
We'll see how he does on game days..Like Al said towards the end of the PC --- ``he'll have to win". Bottom line right there.

I agree. I was expecting a cringe moment or two.
When I saw the Lion's presser introducing Rod Marinelli, whom I'd heard great things about over a long period of time, he came off pretty neaderthal, and not real sharp. Those kinda guys always give me the impression that they'll eventually be hand puppets because they're in over their head.
I didn't get that impression from Cable... first impression, but it's a plus. We'll see if Al can eventually induce the 1000 yard stare in the guy...

As always, I will take a wait-and-see on the new guy. I know he is a fiery guy, according to JerryMac's training camp reports.
Silver lining is the ZBS stays, and Russell stays in the same offense.

so how many games is he going to have to win to keep him from escaping to seattle next year....
coaching seems to be in place if we can hold on to all of them so everything should be pretty smooth going forward

That's a very good question BTW. How many games does the team have to win to sign Cable to a new contract? I wish I knew but there is only one man on earth that knows. If I had to guess I bet they have to get to 7 wins minimum. Tall order.
I certainly hope we draw up a few more plays

If he can managed to win 6 out of his 12, I think he stays.
The team fights hard. It will continue to fight hard.
With a little more sense of stability and a little better game managing, I don't see why that's unreasonable to expect. Here's the remaining schedule (with reasonably winnable games in bold):
Week 6 Oct 12 1:00pm Oakland at New Orleans
Week 7 Oct 19 4:15pm New York Jets at Oakland
Week 8 Oct 26 1:00pm Oakland at Baltimore
Week 9 Nov 2 4:15pm Atlanta at Oakland
Week 10 Nov 9 4:05pm Carolina at Oakland
Week 11 Nov 16 1:00pm Oakland at Miami
Week 12 Nov 23 4:05pm Oakland at Denver
Week 13 Nov 30 4:15pm Kansas City at Oakland
Week 14 Dec 4 8:15pm Oakland at San Diego
Week 15 Dec 14 4:15pm New England at Oakland
Week 16 Dec 21 4:05pm Houston at Oakland
Week 17 Dec 28 1:00pm Oakland at Tampa Bay

Seattle hired themselves a pretty good O-line coach this season in Mike Solari, so I'm not sure Cable was a lock to leave to begin with... I think Knapp will go, but I'd like to see Tom Rathman be kept and given a shot at the OC spot...
From what the TV guys have been saying, the interim coach tag almost has to be given in midseason hirings to get around the longer process of interviewing an approved Rooney Rule candidate... We should be exempt from that damn thing anyway. all things considered...
I think Cable's duration is directly related to how well he holds the team together as well as how competitive we are...
Week 17 Dec 28 1:00pm Oakland at Tampa Bay

I dunno.
Al actually seemed cognizant of the fact that JR needs stability to succeed when explaining why he didn’t term Kiffin in training camp.
I'm cautiously optimistic that Cable’s tenure isn’t tied strictly to win and losses this season.

not to put the cart before the horse.....i agree with the 6 and see a few more possible wins in there
with all the bs that's being tossed around about kiffen and ratboy both being fired after 20 games......maybe cable can pull an art shell from back in the day.......and get this wagon back on track for the playoffs
sure would have been nice to have the 2 we let slip away back

Wow. I don't think I can let my expectations get that high. Also, if this
team goes 2-6, not sure whether the emotional energy will be there for
these guys to continue to try and rally around a battle cry. Contrary to
Al's belief, I think this team will be outmanned in the majority of the
remaining games - if not in talent, certainly in depth. Lack of injuries will
be critical.

i think we have a better chance at beating New Orleans than we do Carolina
I also think we might be able to pull one out against either Denver or San Diego, but i am almost certain we wont win all of the game that we should; meanign we'll screw one of those winnable games up
if Cable wins 5 games i'd be happy, 6 games ecstatic
anything more than that would be dreaming at this point

If Cable wins 3 games he's defied his previous quality level as an HC. His best luck is in giving Greg Knapp total playcalling control and begging Ryan to blitz. As long as he motivates the players on offense, he'll get some wins i guess.

Hopefully you coach as imposing as you look.
To his credit all his teams were known as great rushing teams. And solid offensive teams for that matter. Just weren't winners. Meaning that its still on the defense to get it done so that we can run.

I was actually surprised with coach John Goodmans responses. As HB pointed out he was pretty much spot on and the guy did demonstrate he could move the ball big time as an OC. He seemed to have Charisma by the way he handled himself, strait to the point, in your face, no bullshit type of a approach. I really liked his answer to the question?
"How will you be different than Lane Kiffin or how will this team be different, followed by "this team hasn't won much, how can you change that as most of these guys haven't won much?" His answer " we will learn how to finish games and what do you mean they are not winners? They made it to the NFL, you don't make it to the NFL if you are not a winner. We have to remind them of that and bring that spirit out of them."
I'm still pissed Kiff is gone...he was a little dry, but he had or has something in him that reminded me of Bill Parcells or Belicheck regarding attitude and preperation. Yes he has a lot to work on to be compared to them, but I think he'll be succesfull. I think he jumps into the college ranks first, unless Herm or Marvin gets the boot...

He seemed very much to the point and once he had answered the question you were left in no doubt that it was all he had to say on the matter. He seemed like he will do a similar job to what others thought Ryan would in bringing together the whole team. It does at least bring a certain amount of continuity the offense although I seriously doubt that he is going to be able to be head coach and provide the same level of attention to the offensive line. I will give him my full backing until he proves he can't do the job.

Cable seems like a serious guy. Will he be up to the task? who knows... He may be the next Joe Bugel. His work at Idaho wasn't succesful in the W-L column.
The good thing is the system will remain more or less the same. Were unidimensional, yes; But we were nothing with Art Shell.
At least the playcalling will change; maybe it won't be that boring as it is now.

What are the top three things you'd like to see Cable change
now that he is the HC?
1. Better pass protection:D
2. 4th qtr stamina with some WINS
3. Reduced penalties (perpetual wish as a Raider fan)

Those seem like the three road blocks to winning for this team.
With Kwame in there, I don't know how realistic it is to expect No. 1, though.
With the way the games are refereed, I dont' think we'll ever see No. 3, either.
Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think it's awfully conspicuous that no matter what the personnel is, and no matter who the coaches are, this team is always at or near the top of the league for most penalties.
The Raiders are simply more closely watched than their opponents.

1. less 3 and outs by fixing the running game; lets be honest, outside of the KC game, we havent been great at pounding the rock
2. give the passing game a chance by calling plays that protect Russell and cover up the blemishes of the OLine IN THE 2nd HALF
3. cut back on the conservativeness; its costing us games. i like the fact that we are protecting the ball, but it hasnt worked. it might mean that our stats wont look as good, but it also might mean wins
