I'm a fan of both. Lawton is a good back but he's closer to the guy we have (Griffith) then the guy we lost (O'Neal)

Well Bowie's no surprise as he was the pick for Moss. Spires a bit of a shocker. Coop sealed his fate Sat nite.

Trevor Scott got a whole lotta playing time the other night, including some time with the 1s.

Thinking his development is going along nicely, and with Burgess, Edwards and Richardson all clearly ahead of Spires, that move just makes sense.

I love Cooper's attitude, but I don't know how many special teams only guys we can afford to carry with Jon Condo already in play...

I don't know much about Lawton, but Marviel Underwood does nothing for me...

EDIT: Apparently Cooper is planning on retiring...

Transactions

ALAMEDA - The Raiders made a series of roster moves today.

None of them included adding another wide reevier.

The team waived DE Greg Spires, LB Grant Irons and S Jarrod Cooper, who intends to retire.

The team claimed fullback Luke Lawton off waivers from Philadelphia and signed safety Marviel Underwood.

CB John Bowie (knee), WR Drew Carter (knee) and FB Oren O'Neal (knee) were all placed on injured reserve.

The team is also working out defensive back Nate Lyles. If he were signed, the team would have to cut two players tomorrow.

****
This is the time of the year when the media is no longer allowed to watch practice, so there will be no more details to report.

The special teams session is open. Darren McFadden was back with Johnnie Lee Higgins fielding punts and kickoffs.

*WR Arman Shields (knee) returned to practice.

*The news about Cooper is surprising. No indication he was considering retiring. The Raiders will miss him on special teams.

The coverage units looked bad without Cooper last year.

*For all those that still hate Randy Moss (and there are a lot of you) that trade really doesn't look good right now considering the Raiders will get nothing from Bowie this year.

*Lawton is well traveled. He was traded to Philadelphia from Indianapolis for a conditional draft pick before being waived by the Eagles.

He's also had stops with the New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, and the New York Jets.

*Underwood is a former teammate of LB Kirk Morrison at San Diego State and is from San Leandro. He was drafted by Green Bay in 2005 and finished last season with Denver.

Underwood tore two ligaments in his knee in 2006 and missed the season before being released by the Packers last year.

Spires is a mild head scratchier. But so was moses last year and he hasn't proven it wrong yet.

I think he accepted being done after that last game and seems he was serious about Raiders for life rather than go to another team.

I think the last game of the preseason is big for our backup WR's to take a shot at getting in the rotation.

He has ZB experience from his colts days, but i can't form much of an opinion about him now.

slightly undersized. more of an angle blocker then a mauler. can catch a pass but not much of a rushing threat. like i said closer to the guy we have then the guy we lost.

I guess the Raiders figured they had "back up veteran DE" covered with Edwards and are preferring to bring along a player like Scott? Or have Kelly play a little DE and keep another DT?

Kelly looks way too big to play DE now. And they've been adamant about him being a DT.

Oakland does play Denver in Week 1.

He does look VERY big, but we seem pretty thin at DE by cutting Spires, even with Scott getting reps. Not to mention the fact that the Raiders (should) limit some of Burgess' reps.

We're going into the final preseason game. Burgess and Kelly are only going to play a series or two.

This is Greyson Gunheim's time to audition for other teams.

Geez how many fucking db's do we need? These guys have no chance to stick. I hope we plan on bringing in some OL.

The Bears just granted the release of Ricky Manning Jr. As long as we're going to continue stockpiling corners, why not bring in this cat? He's a damn good player.

DeAngelo Hall
Namdi Asomoua
Stanford Routt
Ricky Manning Jr.

That would definitely form the best set of corners anywhere. Might be too much $$ though.

I'm anxious to see who shakes loose after Saturday's big cutdown. I'm sure we'll be able to find one or two legitimate options (o-line, wide-receiver, fullback).:wavey:

If Ricky Manning was causing trouble because he's not the nickel guy in Chicago, I'm not sure he'd be any easier to placate in Oakland.

Last thing we need is a guy who can't accept his role.

I agree with most senitments here.

I think many guys who get cut on the final days might be solid players, but not system fits. Perhaps a good FB who can block in our ZBS, or a WR who can get vertical. Maybe an athletic G or T (Luke Petitgout if his knees are OK) will sign up. Hell, we might be able to nab a strong side 'backer with some ability...

Not all waiver wire guys are trash. William Thomas immediately comes to mind. He was Pro Bowl caliber for us after being discarded by the Eagles. Romonowski as well.

I guess I need to do some catching up. I didn't even know Manning was disgruntled. He should easily be able to bump Routt to #4...aside from the inevitable FO interference.

Petitgout has not been able to stay healthy in TB. I guess he failed his physical and is also facing a 4 game suspension. He's probably better than anything we have if healthy though.

Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr. said the team has denied his request to be traded, but a more likely scenario will be his release at week's end. The disgruntled Manning Jr. said the request was made through his agent, Jim Ivler. "I would have preferred a trade," Manning Jr. said. "....Not being a part of their plans, that's fine with me. If that's the mistake they want to make, hey, so be it." Manning Jr. was demoted in favor of Danieal Manning this off-season after starting five games last season. He fell out of favor in 2007, and his playing time diminished. "I'm the best nickel on this team. Everybody knows that. But I'm not there. It remains a mystery why I'm not there," Manning Jr. said.

i'd sign manning up ASAP

we have got to start thinking about the possible event that Nnamdi walks, and we are going to need a CB at some point

Manning is good, imo better than routt, and we could definitely use him

We dont have a true #4 and our #3 is shaky. Manning would definitely present an upgrade to the secondary.

I would love for a big space eating DT to shake loose though...
