Jonathan Stewart Has Surgery

Former Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart had surgery on his injured right toe Thursday, putting him on the sideline for at least three months and potentially hurting his stock in April's NFL Draft.
Stewart, expected to be a first-round selection, has been bothered by the injury commonly referred to as "turf toe" since he was injured during a game at Arizona on Nov. 15.
Stewart finished the season playing in pain and appeared at the NFL combine last month where he sat out some drills because of discomfort in his toe.
However, he performed well, running the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds and leaped 36 inches at 235 pounds and solidified himself on most mock draft boards as a mid-first round pick, potentially to Arizona at No. 16 or Houston at No. 18.
He was originally scheduled to workout for scouts at Oregon's second Pro Day on April 20.
NFLDraftScout.com draft analyst Rob Rang said the injury shouldn't hurt Stewart's stock much, if at all.
Rang, who was at the combine, said teams were already aware of the injury and the potential that Stewart could need surgery.
Rang said that a team eyeing Stewart in the first round likely won't pass on him because of this injury, even though lower-leg injuries are always a concern for running backs.
"At the end of the day you just have to turn on the film and you can see that the kid can play," Rang said.
Calls to Stewart and his agent were not yet returned.
So...if he's there in Rd4...do we?

I am on record as saying I don't think we need to run out and draft a RB, but if he's there in the 2nd, I don't think it's a bad move at all.
Still wanna go DL/DL, and see what's at OT and RB in the 4th, but there's something to be said for just going value at a spot.
It'd be more in keeping with the roster if he had blown out an ACL, but if we have to settle for torn toe ligaments, then I guess we'll have to.

A 4.48 forty and a 36" vertical on a jacked up toe is pretty damn impressive...
Indeed.
And, even though the Michael Turner thing would seem to argue against this, we could find ourselves with some seriously good trade bait should both Bush and Stewart blow up for us. And if we can't trade one for good value, hey. The Big Dummy's job sure would be easy with a couple of Studebakers to hand the ball to.

Good point.
IF we were actually sitting there next season with Fargas-Stewart-Bush, we could get a great pick or two for one of the young guns...I mean, Stewart is only 20 years old.
He's not coming out as a 23 year old like Bush.

i highly doubt Stewart even makes it to round 3, and i still think he might go round 1
if a team towards the back end of the 1st round likes him, theyll take him, and he'll most likely be ready to go by July/August
if we dont go DMc in Rd1, i wouldnt mind going Stewart in Rd 2
Stewart + toe injury >>>>> Mike Bush + leg injury, IMO
I wouldn't even consider him in Rd2, honestly. I'm looking for a starter at a need position there. Stewart, like McFadden in Rd1, would be a luxury pick. We're just not in a position to make a pick like that, IMO.
Besides, the depth at RB this year is pretty damn good. Assuming (boldly) that we keep this blocking scheme, there'll be some terrific options late in the draft. Anybody we bring in would be 4th on the depth chart, so I would be annoyed if we invested a high pick in a back right now.

Stewart is going to be a monster so getting him in the 2nd would be good value when you look back at this draft. If we take a RB i want DMC.

I wouldn't take Stewart in Round 2 not because he wouldn't be worthy of the pick, but because we have a guy similar to him in Bush. Has Bush played? No. But do we take Stewart and then basically admit the 1st pick of the fourth round was a waste after 1 year? No, we shouldn't do that either.
You could talk me into taking Run DMC at #4 a helluva lot faster than you could taking Stewart in round 2 even if falls because DMC at least brings something to the table that we dont' currently have -- a homerun threat at RB. We've got a guy like Stewart in Bush and don't even know what he brings to the table yet.

SOME DON’T THINK INJURY WILL HURT STEWART
Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2008, 8:27 a.m.
On the surface, Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart’s surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot has raised red flags. But some league insiders appreciate the fact that Stewart addressed the situation now, even though it puts his short-term financial interests at risk.
“It’s not a real big deal,” said one league source. ”I don’t think he gets out of round one. He’s simply too talented. It’s not really, in my opinion, any different than Heath Miller having surgery to repair a sports hernia before the draft.
“I actually think it’s responsible and somewhat honorable that he had it fixed now. He did it so he’d be ready for camp at the expense of his draft stock. A lot of players would not have done that. I think it reflects positively on the kid and I don’t think teams will hold it against him. He’s too good. The Bills drafted Willis McGahee in round one, and Stewart is every bit as good with a much less serious injury.”
