How exactly does one improve their vertical jump by 7 inches in a couple of weeks? Did he buy some Jimmy training shoes? (Seinfeld reference) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0w2xTexfAg)

Could he jump Howie's kid?...

Pro Day Vaults Gholston Into Top Five?

March 07, 2008 - Vernon Gholston stock is soaring. How high? Precisely 42 inches.
Representatives from nearly every NFL team battled a snowstorm to view Ohio State's Pro Day, but the estimated 50 scouts in attendance were quickly distracted from the cold weather outside. If NFL scouts had not been staggered by Gholston's speed and explosiveness based on his film, they certainly had to be Friday when he stole the show at Ohio State's Pro Day; churning out a 4.58 forty yard dash and 42" inch vertical jump at 6-3, 266 pounds.

as long as we end up with Chris Long, DMc or Vernon Gholston i'll be fine

if we were able to trade back to 6 and grab Gholston, i'd be ecstatic, although his freaky numbers make it look like he is a lock to go top 5 and im thinking possibly #1

It's going to be tough to pass on Ghoulston, as it appears he will turn into a Merriman/LT like pass rushing freak. Miami has been real tough to read. They can go in so many different directions, but if they're sold on Beck at QB, then I think they go with either Ghoulston or Long.

I'm really starting to think it's going to be Gholston and C. Long going 1-2, with Matt Ryan at 3 and the Raiders left with Jake Long.

You just get the feeling that we're never going to get that dominant DL that we've so sorely lacked now. I don't see Dorsey or Ellis as that player. We'll have some interesting options at #4 no doubt. Honestly wouldn't mind trading down if C Long and Ghoulston are both gone.

Parcells could go either way. Gohlston seems like more of a game changer and LOng seems more all around solid. They could also use Ryan and J.Long. Hell they are about to line-up Sims at LT.

Calais Campbell may have slid right out of the 1st round. Couldn't improve on his 40 time at the pro day.

Here's another OT to add to the ZBS prospects: Kirk Barton: The OSU product ran 4.95 at the OSU pro day, and had 34 reps at the combine.

Zuttah's another one who had an awesome combine and would be a good second day prospect, may have even slid into the first day.

Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston recorded a 42 inch vertical leap and ran a 4.58 forty at his Pro Day Saturday.

That's over six inches more than his excellent Combine performance, which many players would have rested on. Gholston is making the case that he's the most athletic player in the draft. Oakland will look at him hard with the fourth pick.

My biggest fear:

C.Long-Gholston go 1-2.

I pray that Matt Ryan has a Pro Dy for the decades, I really do.

1 to Miami or 3 to Atlanta. I don't care which...

The Atlanta message boarders seem to really want Jake Long or Dorsey and then grab Flacco in RD2... If they take one of them, the worst case scenario is we're choosing between some combination of Dorsey, McFadden and Jake Long... Anyone of those would be fine with me providing Dorsey gets a clean bill of health...

Doesn't matter though... I bet Al is already wondering if the equipment managers can fit "Rodgers-Cromartie" into one line on the back of a Raiders uniform....

Hello, 7th round draft pick:

When Minnesota Vikings speedster Adrian Peterson was timed at the NFL Combine by pro scouts last year, the stopwatch was stopped at 4.37 seconds for the 40-yard dash. That time was matched during a Pro Day recently in South Dakota by a small white receiver from Redwood Falls.

Tom Ellingworth, who had 211 catches for 2,398 yards in his career at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, immediately has his stock rise with his impressive sprint. Just 5-foot-10 and 186 pounds, Ellingworth feels his speed and quickness, as well as his ability to return punts and kickoffs, will help overcome his lack of size if he does get a chance to showcase his talents for an NFL team.

NFL personnel arrived at the Ohio State Pro Day excited about how DE Vernon Gholston would work out. He no doubt looks the part: very muscular and defined. Gholston impressed many when he ran his 40 on field turf instead of Ohio State's notoriously fast track, timing a 4.63 and a 4.65. Then jumped a 37-38 inch vertical; anyone who reports he jumped 42 inches has bad sources as the testing unit was slightly broken during his jump. Once on the field, though, Gholston was not nearly as impressive. He is so muscle-bound and big that he struggled to bend knees and sink hips, which hindered his ability to change directions in drills.

I wonder if this perceived negativity is Gholston doing LB drills, and not how his performance rates as a DE.

No. I think it's a legitimate concern anyone should have about a weightroom warrior. As chiseled as he is, he looks more built for show than go.

You're right that he doesn't need as much in the way of change of direction at DE as he would at LB. However, the more flexible he is, and the better his change of direction, the less likely his is to get injured.

A good program can get him ready for stardom though, so roll out the #4 and welcome him aboard.

IMO. If Dwight Freeney can do it, then athletic guys like Vernon can do it if they are slightly undersized. I like him at DE. OLB only in a 3-4 like Merriman.

Crow was right, this guy is really starting to grow on me.

Freak athlete, lives in the weight room, zero character concerns, good motor, very strong, can play multiple positions...

I found some info online about him, and there is one piece where he says the main motivation for leaving school early was to support his family, because his father is deceased...

Sounds like a smart kid, doing what he has to do.

Its officially getting time for the draft to get over with. I woke up today and was reading some draft stuff and like Madden was in the room...BOOM all of the sudden i kinda want us to draft Glenn Dorsey again. This guy was a disruptive monster at times and if his health isnt an issue i really think he could cause trouble in our scheme. Lets be honest if we arent going to blitz we better have guys who can get in the backfield. C.LOog will be gone and Burgess and Gohlston on the outside wont improve our run enough IMO. I think Dorsey can do both a little better.

i dont think slapping the workout warrior label on Gholston is fair at all

the guy had something around 14 sacks and 30 total stops behind the line last season before he went and tore up the workout circuit

when i hear workout warrior, i think of guys that "look like tarzan, play like jane" and this guy is truly far from that

Long, DMc or Gholston and i'll be happy

Not a bad choice at all, IMO.

Yeah and 8 as a freakin Sophomore in his conference?

Not bad man.

The kid has a great motor, and the only thing I hear being questioned is his technique (Probably because Long's is damn near flawless) but his makeup and explosion will make up for that.l

thats what scares me

Long is pretty technically sound, and doesnt really have a whole lot more to improve on

Gholston may have a lower floor, but he has a ceiling that is miles high

if we have a shot at either one, ill be surprised and hoping that we dont screw it up

Ummmm, that's one hell of a pregnancy test there, Nippsy....

Oops, sorry... that was Bill Blilicheats maternity file...

Raiders averaged 17 points a game last... that aint good enough

We got health questions concerning some key players on offense

Our #1 WR in Walker

Justin Fargas is Charles Woodson on offense, cant last more than 10 games

Michael Bush may very well be the real deal.. But I aint rolling the dice on him just yet.

Raiders lost 4 games last year by 4 points or less

That puts us a a respectable 8-8...

If Oakland signs Kevin Carter... I'm content with the DL of Burgess, Warren, Kelly, Carter, Sands and a 2nd rd pick in Pat Sims

Theres no reason why that DL couldnt keep this defense in the middle of the pack

If Walker goes out for a couple of games.. 2 or 3, and Fargas as well...

It's gonna get real ugly folks...

No, no.... we need to score points

17 points a game average aint getting it done...

We need to average 21-24 points a game

McFadden gives us the best chance over any other player in rd 1 to enable us to achieve that

McFadden... lined up in the backfield with Bush... McFadden goes in motion to the flats...

See what happens? Now we have a playmaking WR...

There aint a LB in the NFL that can cover him...

Instant yardage my friend....

Cook it up

In my never ending flip flop I have returned back to the McFadden bandwagon. I think we need to give JaMarcus all the tools to succeed. In Rnd1 id like to see us go DMC or J.Long. Apparently Miami is gay for Chris Long and there are reports that Gholston is going to be a Ram. Could be smoke screen BS. I also think Atlanta will take J.Long.

1. C.Long - Miami
2. V.Gholston - STL
3. J.Long - ATL
4. McFadden - OAK
5. M.Ryan- KC

Then we take L.Jackson/Merling/Campell/Sims/Moore/Groves/ or the best DL availible add a free agent DL (K.Carter etc.) and call it an offseason. Next year we will have an explosive offense with some playmakers and a reshuffled D with a S who can tackle and some new DL-man.

Roger that

Theres some good solid DT's in rd 2 for us

If Kevin Carter can put a bandiad on the RDE for a couple years..

We can go McFadden in rd 1, Pat Sims or Dre' Moore in rd 2...

And were offf to the races fellas

Pat Sims/Dre' Moore and Kelly at DT.... Yummy

Then we draft that DE in next years draft @ #1...

Thats the Nips plan....

Gotta have 4 RB's....

No negotiating....

Fargas, Bush, Rhodes & McFadden

Sims/Moore and Kelly?

Gets 3 ups from the Nips...

2 thumbs and one boner
