He is definitely moving up and I love the guy. He will be in the Top 10 of my new mock. Reminds me a lot of Shawne Merriman coming out.

I've been more or less keeping him locked in as a 34 rush 'backer. But, hell. A RE who plays the run on the way to the QB could be just what we need...assuming we manage to land a DT or 3 somewhere.
Still below Dorsey, Long, and Ellis on my personal wish list. But I'm open to bringing this dude in.

I like this guy because he plays nasty. He is as tough as C.Long IMO

My defensive jihad looks like this...
Glen Dorsey
Vernon Gholston
Chris Long
Sedrick Ellis
By the time the combine comes and goes, I wouldn't be surprised to see a team like New England go all clammy for Gholston. He'd be a perfect fit there. I'd love to have him in Oakland just for his versatility. He actually reminds me a lot of Julian Peterson from his Michigan State days but better with his hand on the ground.

Dead proxy links there Crow...
I was under the impression Gholston was staying in school, though I could be wrong...
The guy looks like he's going to rip through his skin, very Alonzo Spellman like...

You guys really get excited about Ellis?
What is he, a 6'2", 285 pound DT?
I have a hard time seeing Al dropping a top five dime on a guy like that, and I'm not sure I'd blame him.

We still have the Bowl games and the combine, but i expect this guy to rocket up to a lock for the top 10.
Anyone else thinking that Al is going to have Amy wheel his ass down to the field when this brute is doing his drills?
If he performs well in LB drills, we may not even get a sniff of him. The Jets and Pats may be keyed in on him.

He's a little light in the britches, but the boy can flat out play ball.
I expect he'll be a chef's salad over 300 pounds when the combine rolls around. Come training camp, he'll probably be in the 290 range.
Now, granted, this isn't the norm. But when the Bears' defense was smoking, both of their starting DTs (Tank & Tommie Harris) were in the 290-300 range.
You can be a little light, so long as you're good. I think he's good like that. Land a big beefer in Rd2 or in FA to line up next to him and we'd be golden.

The more I read about Gholston the more I'm tempted to put him at the top of my jihad list. To have a Shawn Merriman type on this defense would be phenomenal. But damnit if I don't want a DT like Dorsey to succeed Sapp.
Looks like I have my new signature for the 2008 Draft countdown:
"Give me Dorsey, Give me Gholston, or Give me Death!"
A beast.
Top of my list or 1b with Campbell...

What are the measurables on this guy?
He looks pretty close to buffed up like the Nips :D

I have one (completely unfounded) concern. I wonder if he's TOO buff.
Now, he may just be a speciman, but I thought I read somewhere he had been into bodybuilding since he was young.
While I love the gym rat aspect, anyone else concerned he may wind up being a little stiff, and prone to nagging little boo-boos?

Nah, if that's natural he might be able to carry it, especially if he maintains it. Most guys that look like that and actually play are more flexible than the average person.
I'm a little more worried that he's used "supplements" to get there. That would mean his body hasn't adapted naturally and he'll definitely be more prone to injuries in his joints and ligaments.

A lot of guys that look like that are. No doubt. It can be done without it. Check a lot of old-time bodybuilders. They carbed out during workouts and then dropped carbs almost entirely prior to a competition to lose the water. But as an athlete in the middle of a season you cannot follow that kind of diet.
Gholston is not carrying a lot of water in that photo, so you can almost entirely rule out creatine.

He destroyed Michigans vaunted Oline.
Gave Jake Long his only sack of the year.
If he comes out this year his freakish combine #'s will put him in Top 3 of the draft... and that's being generous.
Either way i dont wanna block that mutha fucka!

I wouldn't be surprised if Al gets a boner for him. Wasn't Merriman the guy he was going after the year we traded for Moss? Dude seems like a clone.
I'm a little confused though. Isn't he a linebacker? I remember hearing that he took over for Bobby Carpenter.

I think it was DeMarcus Ware that Ryan wanted...
That would mean his body hasn't adapted naturally and he'll definitely be more prone to injuries in his joints and ligaments.
I tend to worry about this more when the weight put on is sudden whether by natural or chemical resources... He was already 240 and squating close to 500 coming out of high school... He's only put on about 20 pounds since then so it looks like his gains have been pretty gradual from high school on up...
They had a segment on him last year and his workout was strictly old school meat and potatoes stuff... Heavy dead lifts, power cleans, heavy dumbells for shoulder and chest, squats and leg presses... He may indeed be on the needle, as a pretty good percentage of players are, but the good thing is this is not a built up 220 pounder living on the juice and doing a pretty boy circuit training hour or two in while staring at himself in the mirror... He's been putting in the work...

I remember Clayton saying AL loved Ware too. But what does he know?
Well, word was that Al and Bill Parcells both got one of those 4 hour Cialis erections when Ware was running drills. Something about eye witness accounts of them looking at each other like "Holy fucking sheep shit, Batman!"
Al fudged, and Bill got his guy.
Always seemed believable to me.

Right on point! Some people just understand the simple point of juice over years of work better.
I think that forums and draft sites tend to fall into the whole 'groupthink' trap and it's my biggest pet peeve.
One guy says he loves Gholston, another says it and soon enough he's being pimped by everyone with a key board. Or vice versa, a couple guys rag on a prospect after a couple bad games and everyone drops them into the late rounds on their mock drafts.
That being said, Gholston is special and the combine/post season/pro days will show that. He is a very similiar prospect to Ware/Merriman/Suggs and is an immediate impact type of player.

Yeah I actually didnt see this one coming and i was quite aware of him as a Michigan fan...:shakehead: I thought he was staying in school. I also wouldnt be suprised to see alot of the Ohio State guys return. They have a great shot to get back to the BCS. But i guess it is all about the money.

That drops him on our draft board immediately doesn't it. Just draft projects, baby.

Classic.
From reading your posts, you seem to fall into the whole draft groupthink trap.
I try to watch as much college football/post season/combine drills as I possibly can in order to formulate my opinions. I enjoy taking days off to watch bowl games or the entire day of the combine etc. I tend to stay away from reading all the draft sites until the final couple months heading into the draft. If you think about it, most of the people posting mock drafts are simply teenage kids, recycling the names of the 32 players they know best.
I don't fall for the whole draftcountdown and draftforecast traps though. One guy posts a Youtube video and soon enough all the mockdrafts have some guy going in the top 10 picks.
Back on subject though, I like Gholston a lot, and it wouldnt totally suprise me to see him go number one, but in the end I think he'll probably end up in the 5-10 range. QB's always seem to rise, there are some intriguing OL prospects and 3 DL who could grade out higher. Not to mention a STUD running back.
If the dude puts up 30+ reps, runs a sub 4.6 and has three sacks in the national championship game though, all bets are off. :D
I'm sure you put a lot of time and thought in to that post, but you could have spent that time better by putting in the extra effort of wiping your ass a little more thoroughly, Crusty.
I've been in dial up hell now for several months, so YouTube may as well not exist.
I also don't give two shits what JohnnyKnoxville_69 at www.draftexperts.bs thinks about any particular player. 90% of the people who post on message boards are imbeciles.
*insert wise crack here*
Scott Wright...I take what he says with a grain of salt, but I like his takes. He still thinks Joey Harrington is going to blow up, so obviously, there's a reason why he runs a site making money off of ads rather than working for an NFL team. Although, in all seriousness, I think he actually does still get paid to scout players as well.
I watch games whenever I'm able. This year has been a really bad year for me in terms of keeping up with college ball, though. So, I do my best to make up for it. I'll give TG's loverboy Mike Mayock a listen when he's on. Chris Landry on FSR if I happen to catch him. If I hear the guys who get paid to pretend that they're experts talk about a player, I'll do a little digging. Maybe check out cfbstats.com to see where he's getting his stats, etc. If a guy is piling up most of his numbers against shit schools...like our boy JaSavior did, I'm less inclined to be impressed.
I'm no stat geek. More often than not, I hate 'em. They don't even tell half the story. But if I don't have the video evidence handy, I go with what I've got.
Anyway, do I need to dig up the thread where Jack was pimping my scouting prowess, specifically regarding Elvis "DOOM"ervil and Michael Boley? I'll do it. I'm shallow like that.
Scott Wright is good, he nails a good amount of the top 100 and it was nothing personal. At the very least, he puts a ton of work in and seems to have a good opinion of his own.
I just think that boards get flooded with everyone falling in love with players...Hell I guess we all fall in love with players (Me with Bing...You with Brayton)
I was looking at my early mocks from this time last year and I had us going after Quinn or AP at this point, so I'm no expert either.
And I'll give you props on Boley. I remeber that from years ago.
*thumps chest*
:D
We all make like a blind squirrel every now and then.
I'm a D-line guy. Everybody knows that. Truth be told, if I don't stop eating all this fucking Taco Bell and Popeye's, I may have to try out for the team as a DT.
What I really like is a DL with a big motor to match his big talent. That's damn hard to find in a DT, especially. This is why Ellis intrigues me. Yeah, he's a bit of a lightweight. But that's fine. So long as we don't have Brayton lined up next to him at DT, I don't think that'll be a huge issue.
I'd rather have Dorsey, even though the size difference between the two is negligible. My only fear with him is the injuries he's played through this season. I don't want us to be like the Titans with Haynesworth, meaning we only get our best DL 8 games a year, and we lose every game he misses. That would suck.
But if there's a DT who grades out highly and is there when we pick in Rd2, man...like Nips said in his thread...drafting DT/DT can make shit happen overnight if you hit. Even if it takes them a lot of reps to catch up to the pro game, what else do we have better to do next year than let them get their reps? It'll be Ja's rookie year, basically. So, we're basically playing another 20 game preseason. In '09, we break people down with our suddenly studly D-line and our "Fuck your knees, bitch!" ground game. With any luck, Russell will have remembered how to throw straight by then and we can do some real damage.
Every year, we suck...but I always end up being psyched up for the next year's potential. I'm such a fag.
