No sign of Burgess
Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on September 19th, 2007

Derrick Burgess was not on the practice field or rehabbing with injured players during the media window Wednesday afternoon.

Burgess left the Denver game in the fourth quarter with an apparent calf injury. He was on the sidelines with an ice bag strapped to his calf as the Broncos were driving toward a game-tying field goal.

If Burgess is out any length of time, it would put the Raiders back to where they were before he signed as a free agent — without a consistent outside pass rush threat. The Raiders attempted to add a second outside rusher in the draft, but cut Quentin Moses, who was later claimed by Arizona and yet to be active.

Working out apart from the team with trainers Monday were linebacker Robert Thomas, center Jeremy Newberry and fullback Oren O'Neal.

Newberry missed the Broncos game with a hamstring pull, and was up to running half-speed short sprints with O'Neal. Thomas was mostly a spectator.

Quarterback Josh McCown, who was wearing a protective boot on his sprained foot Monday, was going through drills with the quarterbacks.

Coach Lane Kiffin will issue an injury update as mandated by the NFL later this afternoon.

Maybe without Burgess, the Raiders will discover the wonderful world of the blitzing linebacker.

Seems like Howard and Williams would both be suited to that duty.

In particular Sam Williams. He was originally drafted as the "next Jason Taylor" if you recall and since Morrison & Howard are better in coverage, I could see Williams being sent more.

Though I'd love to see us attack the Browns from Many angles, including DB blitzes, by Huff & others.

Someone asked me before the denver game what I thought some of the Keys were.. I said BLITZ, BLITZ, BLITZ and BLITZ some more.... RESULT - 1 fucking Blitz attempt by Huff (which failed).... :shakehead:

WHy in the FUCK is Ryan not Blitzing? He was during preseason... I don't fucking get it! Ryan needs to UN-FUCKING-LOAD the talent during a game... I will be so fuckin pissed off if we don't blitz the sam fucking hell out of the Browns!

I was really afraid to open this thread.... :(

Damn... I was hoping that Jeremy Newberry would be good to go since he is a much better matchup with Big Ted W...

Looks like may get to see what Chris Clemons can do.... And with as much trouble as the Browns had with Pitts blitzes, we should definitely follow RZ's subtle hints to blitz, especially if Burgess is out... Hopefully we don't follow Bresnahan's lead and sit back in zone coverages..

Not to laugh at other's misery, BUT :D (http://www.bengalswhodey.com/articles/SigntheFireChuckBresnahanNowPetition.php)

Tommy Kelly has a great opportunity so show his stuff with Burgess ailing. I know Clemmons will factor in the rotation but the guy I'm most excited to see in action is Jay Richardson. This kid seems to have a real knack for getting to the ball, an intangable that's tough to coach. Seems like a natural vs. the run and pass. Cutting Quinton Moses speaks volumes for the 5th rounder from Ohio St.

I remember a few downs in the second half where Lamont was mysteriously absent. Justin Fargas was in for a while. I kept asking my friends, "what happened to Jordan?" They were probably too drunk to answer because no one ever did.

Eventually he re-entered the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is a "Kiffin" move to get Cleveland to be ill prepared for what Jordan brings to the table.

Anyway, I hope he's back by Sunday.

Well HB's Boy Kelly hasn't done dick so far and has been the recipient of Sapp and Burgess double teams to boot, wtf? I guess RR mistakenly thought that our front four was the second coming of the Buc front four during their heyday. Richardson at least has shown some abilty to disrupt the OL. We might have a poor man's Jared Allen here sans the brewski's.

I think that LaMont initially injured his back when he got cracked by Donovin Darius in camp. (if my memory is correct)

Burgess keeps it quiet
Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Wednesday at 5:47 pm

News, notes and obsevations from Wednesday's conference calls and media sessions heading into Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns:

– Derrick Burgess did not practice with a calf injury, with coach Lane Kiffin offering no details other than he Burgess would be able to play.

Burgess was in the locker room briefly and said it is his policy not to discuss injuries.

For a speed rusher like Burgess, a calf injury, depending on the severity, could mean he sits out a week or two. He simply cannot be reduced in any way in terms of getoff and be effective.

As it is, opponents have been concentrating on Burgess even more than last season. He's been getting a full dose of double-teams and chip blocks.

If Burgess is out, rookie Jay Richardson is the likely starter at left end, with Chris Clemons and perhaps Tyler Brayton figuring in the mix along with Tommy Kelly.

– Even if Burgess plays, the Raiders will need to pressure Derek Anderson and not allow him the kind of time he got in Cincinnati to locate wide receivers Braylon Edwards and Joe Jurevicius and tight end Kellen Winslow.

A few more blitzes could help, with the most likely candidates Kirk Morrison, Thomas Howard and strong safety Michael Huff.

Heavy blitzing, however, is not a Raiders tradition. It's a tactic Al Davis dislikes intensely.

"In every defensive coordinator’s perfect world, you have great defensive linemen and you never blitz because they get there by themselves and you drop everybody else," Kiffin said.

– Richardson, who provided the deflection that led to Thomas Howard's 44-yard interception return for a touchdown, was a little intimidated by Burgess initially.

"He was real, real quiet at first," Richardson said. "I was a little nervous around him, like, `This guy never talks.' He always takes time out whenever I make a mistake or when he thinks he can help put a fine coaching point in there to help me out. He doesn't talk too much, but when he does, it's always something meaningful or something helpful."

– Josh McCown said he won't play as if he is looking over his shoulder and will rely on his Christian faith to deal with the wrath of Raider fans who voice their displeasure and want Daunte Culpepper as the starter.

"My self worth is not in what another man says about me or what a whole bunch of people say about me or feel about me," McCown said. "My faith is in something way higher than that. That's all I can tell you, it doesn't bother me. If you let it bother you it hurts our team. And that's the last thing I want to do is go out there and let our fans hurt me and thus hurt our team."

– I wrote a Web exclusive column on Kiffin's decision to stick with McCown which is currently posted at Insidebayarea.com.

– JaMarcus Russell was put through a 40-minute practice session Tuesday _ which the NFLPA decrees as the mandatory player's day off _ along with some practice squad members and young receivers, which ostensibly would include Johnnie Lee Higgins and Mike Williams.

The goal is to get Russell up to speed before he is put on the 53-man roster next week.

– Kirk Morrison, with two interceptions in two games, has been spending time in drills catching passes from all four quarterbacks. He said he has been doing it for the last month to make sure he doesn't leave any interceptions on the field.

– Cleveland quarterback Derek Anderson played a heck of a game against Cincinnati but didn't say a single interesting thing on a thankfully short conference call with the media.

– Hamstrings are an issue. LB Robert Thomas, C Jeremy Newberry and FB Oren O'Neal all missed practice with hamstring pulls. RB LaMont Jordan was out with a sore back, which isn't unusual for him after a heavy workload. CB Duane Starks (groin) participated fully in practice and could be available to be active against Cleveland.

– Here is how Kiffin described his house-cleaning upon arrival in Oakland to the Cleveland media:

"I had to come in and this locker room wasn’t in good shape – that’s no secret. It was extremely dysfunctional. We tried to attack that right on and that meant we had to make some changes. We had to bring in a number of new guys, especially younger guys, guys that would understand and represent our team philosophy and work the way we needed them to work. We’re making some strides.”

— Here's what Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel said on the differences of preparing for McCown and Culpepper:

"I think the main thing about what (Daunte) did in Minnesota was his ability to throw the ball and be more of a classic pocket passer, whereas McCown, he can run and make plays outside of the pocket and hurt you that way. In preparing, you have to make sure that you contain one guy and be aware for the loose plays, whereas the other guy, you have to make sure that you get back so that he doesn’t throw it over your head."

– The Raiders did not issue a ticket update Wednesday regarding sales and the possibility of a blackout.

Jordan returns to practice, but not Burgess

ALAMEDA - One starter returned, another still is missing.

Running back LaMont Jordan (back) returned to practice taking Wednesday. Pro Bowl defensive end Derrick Burgess (calf) was not at practice for the second day in a row.

With Dominic Rhodes still two games away from returning from suspension, the Raiders won't risk working Jordan too much.

Burgess is seasoned enough to miss practice and still play Sunday.

Center Jeremy Newberry and fullback Oren O'Neal - both nursing bad hamstrings - still are working out with trainers.

On a side note, the practice music is becoming diverse. The first two weeks, its was all rap to start practice. Today Nirvana was mixed in with some 50 Cent and the Game.

The Nirvana comes courtesy of the Lane Kiffin effect. He has a thing for rock bands with long hair.

Pre-practice update
Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Wednesday at 12:45 pm

The Raiders were short on cornerbacks during warmups and drills preceeding Wednesday's practice.

Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who had an MRI for a knee injury Monday, did not suit up and walked to the practice field to watch without a limp. Cornerback Fabian Washington, who said he had a calf injury following the game, also was not practicing.

Defensive tackle Warren Sapp was not on the field with his teammates, nor was Jeremy Newberry who typically takes Wednesday's off.

Gerard Warren was suited up and on the field for the first time in a month, although he did not participate in all drills. Center Jake Grove, who was inactive with a knee injury against Houston, was suited up and on the field.

Injuries are mounting

ALAMEDA – The Raiders traded Warren for Warren at practice this morning.

Gerard Warren was back on the field. Warren Sapp wasn’t. Lane Kiffin didn’t report any injuries on Monday, but that doesn’t mean Sapp wasn’t hurt during the loss to the Texans.

Center Jake Grove (knee) was back, but tackle Cornell Green and center Jeremy Newberry weren’t. Both have been given Wednesday’s off.

But the secondary is thin. Nnamdi Asomugha (knee) was in sweats while Fabian Washington (calf) was also out.

If the Raiders lose Asomugha this week, they not only lose their best cornerback, but their best tackler in the secondary.

Chris Johnson would probably be active if one cornerback is down. If two are, might that lead to the debut of rookie John Bowie?

As of now all he’s known as is the player acquired in the (lopsided) Randy Moss trade that hasn’t dressed for a game yet.

Pre-practice update
Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Thursday at 12:46 pm

Cornerbacks Fabian Washington (calf) and Nnamdi Asomugha (knee) were not suited up for the second consecutive day, walking out to the field after warmups Thursday as team drills began.

Center Jake Grove (knee), who was limited Wednesday, was not practicing Thursday. Defensive tackle Warren Sapp (knee) was not on the field and will apparently miss practice for the second consecutive day.

Defensive tackle Gerard Warren was again suited up and practicing. Center Jeremy Newberry and tackle Cornell Green, who took Wednesday off, were back on the field.

Boost to the defensive backfield

ALAMEDA – The Raiders secondary received a boost at this morning’s practice.

Nnamdi Asomugha, the team’s best cornerback, was at practice as Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg’s “Nuthin but a G Thang” played.

Nice to know Lane Kiffin’s been going through my Ipod to find practice music.

Fabian Washington, however, wasn’t on the field. If he doesn’t play, Chris Carr would be the team’s third cornerback.

Carr would likely play nickelback, a role that suits him fine. He’s quick and strong enough to play well against slot receivers.

Warren Sapp was also at practice after missing two days with a knee injury. Sapp is needed because without Tommy Kelly’s versatility, the Raiders are thin at defensive tackle.

But with Gerard Warren having practiced all week, this is the closest the unit has been to full strength in some time.

More on the questionable corners

ALAMEDA – The state of the Raiders secondary remains a question.

Lane Kiffin said how Nnamdi Asomugha (knee) and Fabian Washington (calf) felt Saturday would help determine if either plays Sunday against Chicago.

Asomugha practiced, but didn’t finish as the team planned to hold him out. Washington didn’t practice for the third straight day.

Kiffin said that Asomugha practiced makes it more likely he would play, but officially both are questionable for the game.

Reserve cornerbacks Chris Johnson and John Bowie – the rookie acquired in the Randy Moss trade – are possibilities to be active on Sunday depending on the health of Asomugha and Washington.

Should he play, it would be Bowie’s first action of the season. Johnson has been inactive since Jarrod Cooper returned and began playing a lot on special teams.

Warren Sapp (knee) is probable. Gerard Warren (quadriceps) is also expected to play after practicing this week.

Center Jake Grove (knee) is doubtful.

****
Daunte Culpepper will be the No. 2 quarterback against Chicago. Kiffin’s dilemma with putting JaMarcus Russell in that spot is if there were an injury, Russell would have to play.

Russell playing isn’t out of the question, but if he’s No. 3, he could only come in for the fourth quarter or if Culpepper and McCown were both injured before then.

NFL rules mandate teams declare who the third quarterback is before kickoff. If Culpepper is third and McCown were hurt, it might mean Russell playing a lot more than Kiffin wants as an injury replacement.

****
Injured defensive lineman Tommy Kelly was at the team facility today in the backseat of a pickup truck holding an envelope, presumably a paycheck.

It reminds me of a conversation I had with an injured Raider last season who was around on a Friday.

I asked why and he said he had to pick up his check.

What? No direct deposit? He said no and that Al Davis signs every check.

It’s one of the reasons why working for the Raiders is a unique experience.

I believe what he is trying to say is, that each team is allowed to dress 45 players for each game, plus, a 46th man, providing he is designated as the third quarterback only. If this third quarterback enters the game during the first, second or third quarter, the first and second string quarterbacks are not allowed to return for the rest of the game. If the third quarterback enters during the fourth quarter, the other two quarterbacks may return to the game. This is a special rule that was put in about 10 years ago, and gives each team an insurance policy for quarterback injury.

I can't stand some of these overly intrusive NFL rules.

If you have to pay 53 players, why can't they be active?

The 3rd can't play until/unless the first two QB's are injured and/or it's the 4th QTR?

Lunacy !!!!!

I'm pretty sure the 45 active player rule is so teams that have an excess of injured players aren't playing short handed against a relatively healthy team. A team with say 43 players could be at a pretty large disadvantage against a team with 52.

Good point.

A solution might to give teams more flexibility in using the Practice Squad in response to injuries, etc.

I also think the PUP & IR rules are too stringent as well. There should be more options, like baseball, IMO.
