Will Culpepper start Saturday against Arizona? (http://www.starbanner.com/article/20070808/NEWS/70808009/1340/NEWS)
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NAPA, Calif. - Lane Kiffin isn't saying yet who the Oakland Raiders starting quarterback will be for Saturday's preseason-opener against Arizona.
The only thing for certain is that it won't be JaMarcus Russell, the unsigned No. 1 draft pick who remains at his mother's house in Mobile, Ala.
Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown and Andrew Walter are all listed together on the depth chart put out by the team Tuesday.
"The thought was that we're obviously in a competition at that spot (and) no one of the three has emerged as a clear-cut guy by any means," Kiffin said. "We don't need to have the starter (named) right now so we're going to let them play, and to the best that we can, they'll have equal reps in the game."
As they have throughout training camp, McCown and Walter split reps with the Raiders' first-team offense Tuesday and figure to get the majority of work against the Cardinals. Culpepper - a Vanguard High graduate who became the favorite to win the starting job after signing with a one-year deal with Oakland on July 31 - practiced with the second-team offense and will have a limited package of plays against Arizona while he tries to get up to speed with Kiffin's offense.
"We're not playing a real game yet so we'll just keep pushing him as hard as we can push him along and see how far he comes," Kiffin said.
In his brief time with the Raiders, Culpepper has proven his arm is fine. During passing drills, his throws are sharper and more crisp than either McCown's or Walter's. But there are still questions about Culpepper's mobility after he missed most of last season due to lingering problems in his right knee.
There are reservations about McCown and Walter, as well.
McCown was part of a draft-day trade with Detroit and hasn't thrown a pass in a regular-season game since 2005. He spent all of last season as a back-up to Jon Kitna with the Lions and was hoping to parlay a starting job this year into a big payday next offseason when he becomes a free agent.
Walter was 2-6 as a starter for the Raiders last season and was the lowest rated quarterback in the NFL after throwing 13 interceptions and completing 55.8 percent of his throws. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in the offseason and wasn't able to practice until the team opened camp.
Meanwhile, Russell remains unsigned and is one of only two first-round picks without a contract. His representatives have yet to speak publicly on the matter, and Marc Badain - the Raiders' chief negotiator with Russell - declined to comment after attending practice Tuesday.
Kiffin, who has maintained contact with Russell throughout negotiations, didn't sound optimistic when asked if an agreement with Russell was close.
"I wouldn't use the word close, no," Kiffin said, adding that the prolonged talks are hurting the rookie quarterback's chances of playing in the preseason. "Every day hurts him. Every (missed) practice just puts him that far behind. We just talked about how hard it is for Daunte to catch up and he's been playing in this league for a while. Here's somebody who's never taken a snap in the league, so every day that he misses hurts his chances."

NFL Preseason Preview - Arizona (0-0) at Oakland (0-0)
Tony Moss
A couple of new leaders will take their respective sidelines for the first time on Saturday night, as the Oakland Raiders play host to the Arizona Cardinals in the initial preseason tune-up for both teams.
Donning the headset for the Silver and Black will be Lane Kiffin, formerly the offensive coordinator for USC, who takes over for the fired Art Shell. The 32- year-old Kiffin, son of longtime Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, is the youngest head coach in the modern era of the NFL. He takes over a moribund franchise that has gone a combined 15-49 since 2003, and he does so without No. 1 overall pick and "quarterback of the future" JaMarcus Russell, who was still embroiled in a contract holdout as of Friday afternoon.
Former Cardinals starter Josh McCown, holdover Andrew Walter, and the recently acquired Daunte Culpepper are all slated to see time at QB for the Raiders on Saturday.
Arizona, meanwhile, will be operating in a game situation under head coach Ken Whisenhunt for the first time.
Whisenhunt was handed the Cardinals job after a successful three-year stint as offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Like Kiffin, he has a major challenge in changing the culture of losing within his organization. The Cardinals have just one playoff win since 1947 and have posted only one winning season since 1984.
Whisenhunt will build around an offensive corps that includes quarterback Matt Leinart, running back Edgerrin James, and wideouts Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, none of whom are expected to see significant minutes on Saturday.
First-round draft choice Levi Brown (Penn State), whom the Cardinals selected with the No. 5 overall pick in April, will get his first work in an Arizona uniform.
On the injury front, Oakland running back LaMont Jordan (back) and defensive lineman Tyler Brayton (elbow) are among the significant figures that will miss the preseason lid-lifter.
Saturday will mark the 10th all-time preseason meeting between the Raiders and Cardinals, with Oakland entering the game holding a 6-3 edge. The two last met in the preseason prior to the 2005 season, when the Cardinals were 17-16 road victors.
One of Oakland's two wins during the 2006 regular season came against Arizona, a 22-9 home triumph in Week 7.

Raiders Prepare To Begin Kiffin Era
August 10, 2007
OAKLAND -- Lane Kiffin will have to settle for seeing the quarterback who could have been the future of the Raiders instead of the one who is in his first exhibition game as Oakland's coach.
With No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell unsigned, the Raiders enter Saturday night's preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals with Josh McCown starting at quarterback and Andrew Walter and Daunte Culpepper as the backups.
Matt Leinart will start for Arizona at quarterback. He's a player very familiar to Kiffin and one who could have been a Raider if the team hadn't passed him up in the 2006 draft.
Kiffin and Leinart won two national championships together at USC, with Leinart winning the Heisman Trophy award in 2004.
"It's going to be fun," Leinart said. "I'm excited to see him before the game. They've got Mike Williams now, who was my receiver in college. And I know quite a few of the guys on the team, so it's going to be fun to go there."
In the 2006 draft, the Raiders chose safety Michael Huff with the seventh pick as Leinart fell to the Cardinals at No. 10. While the Raiders are pleased with Huff, their struggles at quarterback last season contributed to a 2-14 record that led to coach Art Shell's firing.
One of those wins came at home against the Cardinals in Leinart's third career start in the NFL.
"Last year, we had some bad experiences there playing, but I'm looking forward to seeing Lane and seeing him as a head coach," Leinart said.
Shell was fired following the season and Kiffin was brought in to rebuild the Raiders. The team started by using the top pick this year on Russell and signing McCown and Culpepper to challenge Andrew Walter.
But with contract negotiations with Russell stalled, the Raiders will start McCown in the preseason opener against one of his former teams.
"I wanted to start this game, because I wanted to play against the players on it just because of the guys that I played with when I was there," said McCown, who spent four years in Arizona. "I just like competing against those guys. I thought it'd be fun."
The Cardinals also have a new coach this season in former Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. The Raiders interviewed Whisenhunt before the 2006 season but he pulled out of talks before any offer was made and Oakland hired Art Shell.
Whisenhunt gets his chance this year with the Cardinals, who have plenty of talent at the skill positions with Leinart, receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald and running back Edgerrin James.
"As a young team, we want to win, obviously. I think that's important," Whisenhunt said. "But you've also got to understand that we're trying to look at players. We're in a position now where we've got to find out about chemistry with some of our guys on the first unit, and then there's a number of positions where we have guys competing for backup roles."
A big focus for both new coaches this offseason was rebuilding the offensive line. The Cardinals were last in the league, averaging 3.2 yards per carry in 2006.
Arizona signed center Al Johnson and left tackle Mike Gandy as free agents in the offseason and used its first-round pick on Levi Brown of Penn State in an effort to shore up the blocking this season.
The Raiders allowed a league-worst 72 sacks last season, but the biggest changes in Oakland are about technique with the cut-blocking scheme brought in by new line coach Tom Cable.
Cable is the fourth line coach in the past four years in Oakland but the first to use cut-blocking. His schemes worked well last season in Atlanta when the Falcons rushed for 2,939 yards. Although 1,039 of those were by quarterback Michael Vick, it was still the most by an NFL team since 1978 when New England set the league record with 3,165.
This game will be the first real sign of how well the change is working, since the Raiders don't cut their own defense in practice to avoid any possible injuries.
"We're not going to cut our own guys here in practice and so you have to find out which guys are going to cut, which guys are going to do it right, which guys are going to be extremely physical and finish the way we need to," Kiffin said. "At times, there's a point where they have to cut off in practice because we don't want to do it with our own teammates."

Three keys for the Raiders
• The offense must show it can move the ball and not commit turnovers.
• The offensive line needs to look competent after last season's debacle, when it allowed a league-high 72 sacks.
• The defense must be tough against the run.
Three keys for the Cardinals
• Can Arizona's running game be effective?
• The defense must show improvement after giving up the big plays in 2006.
• A rookie no more, Matt Leinart must start showing he's a franchise quarterback.

STORY LINE: Tonight's game marks the official unveiling of the Lane Kiffin era and gives fans their first look at the man entrusted with reviving a Raiders franchise that has won only 15 of 64 regular-season games the past four seasons. What they will see is the return of the West Coast offense after a three-year hiatus, though Kiffin still intends to mix in the occasional deep pass. Quarterbacks Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper will have their first opportunity to show they are worthy of running Kiffin's offense in the regular season. McCown, tonight's starter, played for the Cardinals from 2002-05. Then comes Andrew Walter, a quarterback who guided the Raiders to their only two victories last season but also endured a league-worst 46 sacks. Culpepper is expected to receive extensive playing time in his first action since a knee injury sidelined him four games into last season. All eyes will be on Oakland's offense. The Raiders scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, and their offensive line allowed a league-worst 72 sacks. That prompted Raiders managing general partner Al Davis to fire coach Art Shell and hire the offensive-minded Kiffin. Kiffin, in turn, hired respected offensive line coach Tom Cable. Defensively, the Raiders return all 11 starters, so we know what to expect in that regard. It will be interesting to see how the Raiders fare against the high-powered Cardinals offense.

I don't care for Jim Gray, who is usually on the sidelines. He seems to always get some facts wrong. I think that position would best be served by someone like Wisniewski, who I believe did some of that last preseason.

He earned the Ed Block Courage Award for his efforts. During a three-game stretch from Week 14-16, he racked up 28 catches for 292 yards and a touchdown. Against Cincinnati on December 10, Curry had eight catches for 99 yards including a five-yard touchdown. Curry followed it up with nine catches for 87 yards against St. Louis. The next week, Curry set a single-game high with 11 catches for 106 yards against Kansas City.
LECHLER PUNTING AVERAGE TOPS IN NFL HISTORY: Shane Lechler.’s 46.1-yard punting average through seven seasons is the highest in NFL history for players with at least 250 attempts. Lechler reached the qualifier of 250 punts during the November 23, 2003, contest at Kansas City. He surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh, who averaged 45.1 in a career that ended in 1952. Lechler led the AFC and finished second in the NFL in gross punting average (47.5).
LECHLER 50-YARD STREAK: Shane Lechler.’s streak of having a punt travel 50 yards or longer ended at 17 straight games as he did not have a punt of that distance during the December 23 contest against Kansas City. During the streak, he had 48 punts exceeding 50 yards and seven over 60. He set a record with 33 straight games with a punt of 50 or more yards, the longest streak since the NFL/AFL merger in 1970. The streak, which lasted from 11-30-03 against Denver until 12-11-05 at the N.Y. Jets, surpassed Rick Tuten’s mark of 30 straight games from 1993-95 with Seattle. During the record-setting streak, Lechler topped 50 yards 65 times with 12 punts of over 60.
WARREN-TING ATTENTION: DT Warren Sapp. enters 2007 with a career total of 94.5 sacks and ranks third on the all-time career list for defensive tackles. Sapp ended the 2006 season with 10 sacks, leading all NFL interior linemen.
MORE SACKS FOR 56: DE Derrick Burgess. enters 2007 having played in the last two Pro Bowls. Burgess led the NFL with 16 sacks in 2005, finished with 11 in 16 games in 2006, earning a second consecutive Pro Bowl bid. Burgess finished tied for sixth in the AFC and 11th in the NFL. Burgess now has 27.0 sacks in 32 games as a Raider since joining the Silver and Black as a free agent in 2005.
SACK ATTACK: Thanks to Burgess and Sapp, the 2006 season marked the first time since 1991 that two Raiders players have recorded double-digit sacks.
TOTALLY AWESOME-WAH!: CB Nnamdi Asomugha. led the team with eight interceptions and scored his first career touchdown this season. He ended 2006 ranked tied for third in the NFL for the most interceptions. Asomugha also earned the 2006 Commitment to Excellence Award.
156 AND CLIMBING: By connecting on a 35-yard field goal in the 2nd quarter of the December 31 contest against the New York Jets, Sebastian Janikowski. has now tied Hall of Famer George Blanda for 2nd place on all-time field goals made in team annals. Janikowski now trails only Chris Bahr by six heading into this season. (Chris Bahr, 162, George Blanda/Janikowski 156, Jeff Jaeger, 152).
JANIKOWSKI NOW KICKING UP THE CHART: Sebastian Janikowski. finished with 70 points in 2006 and is now third on the Raiders all-time scoring list. With a 35-yard field goal in the 3rd quarter in the 22-9 win over the Arizona Cardinals on October 22 at McAfee Coliseum, Janikowski moved past Jeff Jaeger into 3rd in all-time team scoring annals. Janikowski, who has topped the century mark in scoring in four of his six pro seasons, has 711 points in his career.
JANIKOWSKI TIES TEAM RECORD: Sebastian Janikowski.’s 55-yard field goal in the second quarter of the November 12 contest against Denver tied his own Raider record. Janikowski set the record on November 2, 2003, when he connected on a 55-yarder versus the Lions in Detroit. Janikowski added a 53-yarder in the December 23 contest against Kansas City. Janikowski has connected on seven of the Silver and Black’s 25 longest field goals in team history.
SCORING DEFENSE: In 2006, during an eight-game stretch from October 15 at Denver to December 3 versus Houston, the Raiders defense allowed only 11 touchdowns. During that eight game span, the Raiders also allowed just 15 field goals. On December 3 versus Houston, the Raiders defense allowed one touchdown and three field goals. Against the Chargers in San Diego on November 26, the Raiders allowed three touchdowns in a game for the first time in seven games. In Kansas City on November 19, the Raiders allowed two touchdowns and a field goal. Against Denver on November 12, the Raiders allowed two touchdowns and a field goal. The Raiders limited Seattle to one touchdown and three field goals in a November 6 Monday Night contest in Seattle. The Silver and Black held Pittsburgh to 13 points on two field goals and a late touchdown in the 20-13 win over the Steelers. The Raiders limited Arizona to three field goals during the October 22 win over the Cardinals at McAfee Coliseum. The Raiders held the Broncos to a single touchdown and two field goals during the October 15 contest at Denver.
OFFENSIVE DEFENSE: The Oakland Raiders scored four defensive touchdowns in 2006, which tied for fifth-best in the NFL. Only Baltimore, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Philadelphia with five, had more touchdowns on defense than the Raiders. Chicago and Buffalo also had four scores on defense.
SURE TACKLING: Three Raiders players finished the 2006 season with more than 100 tackles, LBs Kirk Morrison. and Thomas Howard., and FS Stuart Schweigert.. With 107 tackles, Schweigert led all free safeties in tackles in the NFL.
FAST CARR: Cornerback/kick returner Chris Carr.’s 100-yard interception return on October 29 against Pittsburgh was the second-longest return in Raiders history, Carr’s key score is surpassed by only Eddie Anderson’s 102-yard return for a score on December 14, 1992, versus the Dolphins at Miami.
IN A HUFF: Rookie first round pick Michael Huff. recorded a safety during the October 22 win over the Arizona Cardinals when he stuffed the ball carrier in the end zone. In addition, Huff, the seventh overall pick who started every game so far in his first NFL season, and finished 2006 as the Raiders fourth leading tackler. He finished with 78 in 16 games played.

OFFENSE
1ST SERIES
- Nice rollout by McCown, had a man open underneath, but missed the read and threw it out of bounds
- Threw a floater to Porter on 2nd down... if he threw it on a line, it would have been a 1st down
- Brutal throw by McCown on 3rd down... Had a receiver, missed him by 10 ten yards...
2ND SERIES
- Nice quick throw to Porter on 2nd down. Porter looked good breaking a tackle a getting a good gain.
- 2 yard gain on 3rd and 3. Either a poor play call or a poor pass route by Curry. Never had a chance at a 1st on that route.
... 5 passes, 1 run... Need more balance.
3RD SERIES
- McCown double clutched on a quick throw to Porter and took a sack. Somebody on the right side got owned.
- Sweet cut back run by Rhodes on 2nd down. Picked up 12 or 13 yards. Amazing what a little vision can do.
- Another hand off to Rhodes. Nice gain up the middle for 4 yards... showing some rhythm and bounce. Need to run the ball more.
- 3rd consecutive hand off to Rhodes. This time to the right side. Both Gallery and Sims took the play off. 3 yard loss.
- Nice hard count by McCown to force offsides... 3rd and 1... Rhodes up the middle for a 1st down. (Now that we're running, we're moving the chains)
- Another quick throw to Porter on 1st down (3rd of the night). Broke another tackle... 14 yard gain. I like this play.
- 1st down hand off to Rhodes on the right... entire right side of OLine got pwned. 5 yard loss.
- False start by Curry... 2nd and long... Very well executed screen by McCown. Bought a lot of time... 10 yard gain. Very Gannon-like
- Nice connection by McCown to BMW on 3rd down... looked like a defensive breakdown somewhere because there was no defender within 10 yards of BMW.... 1st down.
- Green got blown up on the right side... McCown blindsided and just barely got the ball off... we got a li'l lucky there.
- Rhodes short gain to the right.
- False start by Green on 3rd down... McCown overthrows Gabriel in endzone... Pass Interference on defense even though ball was uncatchable... :D
- TD Rhodes.
2ND QUARTER
- Walter looked damn good on short to medium throws... especially to the TE. Based on 1st half, he looked much better than McCown (who was shaky early on). After watching Walter tonight, I'll be pissed if he doesn't make the squad... looked very good.
- BMW earned a roster spot tonight. Great 3rd down and redzone target.

DEFENSE
1ST SERIES
- Great penetration by middle of line forcing bad throw on 1st down.
- Solid defense on 2nd down on run up middle.
- A little exposed on 3rd down screen. Quicker RB could have broken it for a much bigger gain... Fortunately stopped Edge a yard short of 1st down.
2ND SERIES
- No pass rush on 1st down --> 5 yard gain on quick out
- Great play by Howard on 2nd down. Beat 2 defenders to make stop... Moses took himself out of the play.
- Kelly blew up middle of the line for the 2nd time tonight... forced quick throw. 3 and out again.
3RD SERIES
- 1st down run intended for middle, but cut back because Moses got blown up... 4 yard gain.
- Kelly blew up the middle of the line for the 3rd time, almost caught RB for 5 yard loss... Moses got blown up again on the right... 1st down.
- Kelly blows up middle of the line for the 4th time tonight... forces bad throw on 1st down.
- LB gets caught on pick play... 1st down.
- Howard blitzes on 1st down... forces bad throw
- Fitz schools Washington on 2nd down for 15 yard gain...
- Run up the middle for 7-8 yards. Nice job by OLine on that one...
- We read reverse on 2nd down, but both defenders (2nd string) whiffed on the tackle... 1st down.
- Another run, another missed tackle by a reserve... starters are starting to come out.
- 2nd and 5... great pressure by Moses... INT dropped by another reserve.
- Moses in backfield again on 3rd down... Kelly in backfield as well (5th time tonight)... very close to intentional grounding... PUNT.

I thought DC came back and had a very strong finish to the 2nd half in spite of all the dropped passes by the 12th string WRs. All 3 QBs had their moments... I don't think any of the 3 distanced himself as the front-runner. If things stay this even, I still think McCown is the odd man out. DC has an edge in being a better mentor for Russell and Walter has an edge based on where he is in his career.
I wasn't overly impressed by "JOE". I think, like Fargas, he goes down too easily and didn't make a whole lot of people miss. He just happened to find a lot of daylight against the Cards 17th string defense. With Rhodes on the shelf for the 1st four games and Jordan looking like a gimp, I don't like the idea of going into the first 4 games of the season with Fargas and "JOE" as our RBs... especially considering that neither McCown nor DC got it going until we established the run.

The only thing i can figure is that you're still stuck on adrian Peterson. Because Echemandu broke quite a few tackles. But maybe i'm crazy, I wonder what everyone else saw.
Also you can't credit Peppers on plays he made against the same defense you used to devalue Echemandu's effort. Atleast not w/o being a hypocrite that is. Lastly pepper was looking not so great well into echemandu's established running. He was just flat out inconsistent. Maybe Rusty though, we'll find out next week.

I must admit that Robert Gallery looked pretty damn good in PassPro in the plays that I watched him closely. Didn't appear to do much in the run blocking area, but Rome wasn't built in a day.
I thought "Joe" looked pretty good, even though it was against 2nd & 3rd teamers. Decisive reads, stiff arms, spin moves, I think he has a chance to stick.
Stuart Schwiegert, oh boy.......
QB's, Not sure what we have, but Culpepper looked crisp on his roll outs and if given more time, could very well win the starting job IMO.
Tommy Kelly looked like a beast, Jay Richardson looked solid and BJ Ward looks like a keeper.

Raiders 27, Cardinals 23
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The way last season went for the Oakland Raiders, they'll take any sort of a win -- even an exhibition one over the Arizona Cardinals.
Andrew Walter threw a touchdown pass to Mike Williams and Hiram Eugene scored on a 36-yard interception return to lead Oakland to a 27-23 victory Saturday night in coach Lane Kiffin's first game with the Raiders.
"It's one preseason game," said Walter, who went 8-for-11 for 50 yards. "It's nothing to hang your hat on. We need to get back to work tomorrow."
The Raiders had little to feel positive about last season when they lost the final nine games and set a franchise record for losses in a 2-14 campaign that led to coach Art Shell's firing.
Tempering the enthusiasm after this win was the fact that one of those victories was a 22-9 decision Oct. 22 at home against Arizona. Oakland also won its first four exhibition games last year before falling apart once the season began.
"You don't want to get too excited," safety Stuart Schweigert said. "Last year we were 4-1 in the preseason. You can see that doesn't tell you anything about where your team is at."
Kurt Warner threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Bryant Johnson on his only drive of the game and Neil Rackers kicked a 59-yard field goal on the final play of the first half for Arizona.
New coach Ken Whisenhunt played quarterback Matt Leinart only one quarter and running back Edgerrin James just two series in the game. Leinart finished 5-for-11 for 50 yards and James carried twice for 3 yards.
"We stumbled a bit but I thought we did all right," Leinart said. "We showed some fight to get back up. but we've got to learn to close. We've just got to keep getting better. It's the preseason and we're learning a new offense."
Third-string quarterback Shane Boyd got most of the playing time and threw the interception that Eugene returned for a score to make it 14-7 early in the second quarter. Boyd scored on an 8-yard draw on Arizona's opening drive of the second half.
Rackers added two more field goals to give Arizona a 23-21 lead, but Sebastian Janikowski's 27-yard field goal, set up by a 50-yard pass from Daunte Culpepper to rookie Johnnie Lee Higgins, put Oakland back ahead with for good 8:10 remaining.
The Raiders were without No. 1 overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell, who is in a contract dispute with the team. That left the quarterbacking duties to Josh McCown, Walter and Culpepper.
After failing to convert a first down on his first two drives, McCown put together an 80-yard touchdown drive. The drive was fueled by three Arizona penalties for 39 yards, negating a false start, lost fumble and third-down incompletion.
Darnell Dockett was called for a personal foul for shoving Cooper Carlisle after a false start, Bertrand Berry was offsides on a play McCown fumbled away a shotgun snap, and Antrel Rolle was called for pass interference in the end zone on a third-and-13 pass to Doug Gabriel. Dominic Rhodes ran it in from the 1 on the next play.
The best offensive plays of the drive were a 14-yard pass to Williams on third-and-7 and a 13-yard run by Rhodes. McCown finished 5-for-9 for 42 yards.
Walter engineered another scoring drive to end the half, capped by a 3-yard pass to Williams, who outjumped Darrell Hunter for the ball. Williams, a former top-10 pick who struggled in two seasons with Detroit, is hoping to revive his career in Oakland under Kiffin, his assistant coach in college at Southern California.
"It was good to see Mike make a couple plays," Kiffin said. "The touchdown catch was the Mike that some of us remember, but he still has a long ways to go."
Culpepper entered to a standing ovation with 9:38 left in the third quarter and promptly fumbled the snap from Jeremy Newberry. Rookie Alan Branch~redded for HB~ recovered to set up a field goal by Rackers. Culpepper fumbled again on the next drive but the Raiders retained possession.
Culpepper showed good mobility later on rollouts after struggling with knee injuries the past two years.
"I felt really good to be able to roll out in the pocket and make accurate throws," he said. "I wanted to see if I could do it against a defense in a live game. It's a starting point and something to build on."
Whisenhunt was pleased with how the team ran the ball, averaging 4.3 yards per carry, and his defense at the start of the game. But he still sees lots of work to be done.
"The biggest thing I'm disappointed in were the mistakes at the end of the game," he said. "I had high expectations that we wouldn't make those kind of errors. It was a good learning tool for us."
Game notes
Oakland committed eight penalties for 58 yards. "We have to play a lot smarter than that," Kiffin said. ... Adimchinobe Echemandu led the Raiders with 75 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Echemandu absolutely did make people miss with his moves -- particularly that spin move at the line of scrimmage that turned a zero-yard gain into a 10-yard gain, or something.
The dude ran with decisiveness, and that alone is a step up from what we've seen out of LaMont.

Couple observations without having read any of this thread yet (I DVR'ed the game and just finished watching it) ...
-- Rough start for Daunte, but he kept his head in the game and made some good throws, especially on a few deep passes. Will Buchanon and JL Higgins dropped easy first downs for him. Love the way Daunte seemed to interact with the young guys. Sure it's just preseason so a drop is really no skin off his back, but this is how you forge relationships with your teammates and become their leader.
-- Adimchinobe Echemandu deserves a long look, especially with Jordan hurt and Rhodes to be suspended. Hey, maybe he's just Madre Hill or Larry Ned version 2007, but I'd like to see.
-- Mario Henderson blocked with authority in the run game, at least when I thought to watch him. Nice to see, even if it was against fourth-stringers.
-- Did Kevin Huntley get flagged for a Siragusa? Hate that schit.
-- Chris Clemons is all heart and hustle, but I don't know how much he can help the team.
-- B.J. Ward made his presence felt a few times. Great special teams play on the punt deep in Arizona territory. Plays like that should seal his spot on the team.
-- Kiffin really went out of his way to give Porter early looks. I don't know if I like that or hate it.

Now you're getting pissy for less than a good reason. But my point was that no one else seems to have seen these claims you've made on echemandu. And who do I bitch about? Peterson? I've been over Peterson since draft day because its over, been over.
I never devalued the guy's effort...
You're being picky. But to rephrase, you did devalue his results against the same defense you gave cullpepper kudos for finding his rhythm against it. No?
We'll agree to disagree.
Fair enough.
No, you'll find out next week.
What, you won't? Or you've developed a way to destroy the term "premature" and the phrase "3rd-4th string defense asterisk"? You make it hard to give Dante any credit since the notion that he was that consistent is blasphemy to you.

Thats one thing I'll give Pepp credit for. Him and Moss both were very vocal guys. so I expected him to have some presence out there. I do hope to see him against some better defenses to see how well he does. Outside of the 49 yarder i want to see more of his intermediate passes get caught.

Yep, seemed that way to me. He looked alot like mike bell of denver at times. He ran the way you are supposed to run in a zone blocking scheme. Fargas seemed to find comfort as well along with Rhodes. Lamont really needs to put together some serious work to keep pace with the other guys who are more at home in this scheme.
I'm guessing Mike Bush might get sent to thepractice squad or something if he can't get into game shape in time, because echemandu is locking up a spot on this team. Though I'd hope Lamont would be odd man out.
Also Oneal made some man sized lead blocks.

Ha ha, the Pope must still be asleep!
http://www1.pressdemocrat.com/article/20070812/NEWS/708120464/1010/SPORT01
This is what I saw Saturday night at the Coliseum in the first half when the first-line players were on the field. New Raiders quarterback Josh McCown was fast and resourceful and, after he got over being nervous, he was an accurate passer. And he was fun to watch.
Andrew Walter, last season's human sacrifice, came after McCown and completed a bunch of passes. He was on the money with his throws, and on one third down he hit tight end Zack Miller over the middle for 14 yards before the Arizona Cardinals figured out what to do. On that pass Walter looked like Rich Gannon, not that I'm saying he's as good.
I saw wide receiver Jerry Porter make impressive catches and after that he ran well, and I had to wonder -- I've wondered a long time -- why the Raiders warehoused and humiliated him last season. I saw running back Dominic Rhodes run with speed and spirit, and it's too bad he's suspended the first four games of the regular season. I saw reserve running back Justin Fargas run hard and fast, and I noticed he's learned how to be a back. He used to run forward as fast as he could like a 100-yard-dash guy, and now he can vary speeds and move left and right and adjust to the context.
I saw the offensive line perform well. It did not give up a sack. Please linger over that thought. Offensive linemen, in a sense, are the most important players on the team. If they can't protect -- and last year they were inexcusably bad, criminally bad -- nothing on offense can work. Nothing.
Offensive linemen are the protectors of the quarterback. If you think of a football team as a small society -- or a country -- they are the upholders of law and order and the status quo. They protect the monarch -- the quarterback -- while the defenders, especially the ends, try to cause anarchy.
Last season, the offensive line allowed opposing defenses to ruin, sack and pillage the Raiders. I did not see that in the first half Saturday night. I saw the quarterbacks given time and comfort. I saw the Raiders complete two long, creative, varied drives.
I saw the defense control the Cardinals' offense, and I saw the Raiders intercept a pass and run it back for a touchdown. I saw a well-coached team that played with purpose and confidence. Let me repeat that. I saw a well-coached team.
I didn't know what to expect from new head coach Lane Kiffin, 32, who's never been a head coach in the National Football League. It was a pleasure to see his team -- well, I haven't written that about the Raiders in years -- so professional, so ready to play.
I have a preconception about the Raiders -- and I admit it. I expect them to fail. I expect them to embarrass themselves, and then I expect them to invent wacko excuses. I expect to write negative things about them. I expect Raiders executives to give me the cold eye as if I made the team bad.
I hate this entire dynamic. I wish the Raiders were a better team so I could write nice things about them for a change. It is a drag to look down on a professional sports organization, and I have looked down on the Raiders.
Maybe I am over-reacting with glee to what I saw in the first half Saturday night. Lord knows I want to see something new. And I honestly don't know what it means for Oakland to play well in the first half of the first exhibition game, against the Arizona Cardinals. But I know these Raiders were improved from that sorry, lost, bewildered, dispirited, horribly coached bunch Art Shell shoved out there last year. I know that.
I also know I expected to criticize the Raiders after their first exhibition game -- it is what I've learned to do, and I've learned it from experience. But I didn't have to criticize.
So, I praise them. It sure beats the alternative.

Walter made quick decisions and some nice throws. He looked confident and all of that made him look like a leader. I don't know who will win the starting quarterback job but Walter was good last night. It strengthens my hope that we can keep him no matter where he is on the depth chart. He provides us with a quarterback under contract next year, a quarterback with potential who can be a good backup, a strong arm, and a draft pick before his contract is over.
The team seemed well coached with few penalties. The tackling needs to be surer at times.
The offensive line pass protected well. Cable is saying it will take time which is what I like to hear...honesty.
Mandu and Ward followed up their strong training camp with a nice game...they deserve more time.
I am not too worried about the rookies. I know they will turn out good and some just find their stride once more comfortable.
I think this first game was a confidence builder and increased their baby steps.

I hope that Newberry is the starter on the offensive line...at least for the first week. Not knocking Grove though. It is just that he is, without a doubt, the leader of our line and we will experience some growing pains. This would help at the beginning of the season.
One other thing that I am very interested in is the halftime adjustments. We will obviously have to wait until the opportunity presents itself though. The way that Kiffin is so meticulous and his ability to interact, I think we will get back to the old days on that.

I thought from a accuracy standpoint he picked up where he left off at the last couple games last year when we shortened up the routes. In fact he completed 70 plus percent in his last to games. once on 20 throws, again on 37 throws.
The difference so far is no int's. That changes everything and oddly enough he was the only qb who didnt fumble. Either way he looked far more comfortable in this offense than i expected. kudos to him of a fairly efficient game. But its just one game and as many here have said, no one got serious separation. McCown showed the best mobility, Cullpepper showed the sharpest field stretching arm, and Walter was the most efficient. Those are all things we need. So its gonna be the guy who does all of the above who pulls away.
