Angry Pope...I guess this is your department

I have not been able to find a damn thing about Tom Walsh as far as our stats and offensive rankings with him as the OC? Just curious what it was like with him calling the plays.

A story on Tom Walsh...notice the quote at the bottom....

NEIL HAYES: TIMES COLUMNIST

A very unlikely offensive coordinator

Much has been made of Al Davis' decision to fire Art Shell after the 1994 season since the recently rehired Raiders coach emerged as a candidate to replace Norv Turner. Davis often has said that he regrets firing Shell.

The details leading up to Shell's leaving the team after 27 years as a player and coach were lost on many Bay Area fans caught up in the excitement that followed the team announcing it would return to Oakland five months later.

That's a shame because they are missing the irony in the recent news that Shell is on the verge of elevating Tom Walsh, who has not worked as an NFL coach since leaving the Raiders and currently owns and operates Hansen Guest Ranch, which advertises itself as a horse-friendly bed and breakfast in remote Swan Valley, Idaho.

Walsh may be the first offensive coordinator in NFL history who holds a political office. He's the mayor of Swan Valley.

"I prefer anything delivered to the media come from a spokesperson of the Raiders," Walsh said from his ranch.

Those who followed the Raiders closely in 1994 were surprised to learn that Shell is expected to make Walsh his offensive coordinator.
Shocked may be a better word. Stunned even.

Walsh wasn't one of the "back-stabbers" on his staff that Shell claimed criticized him to owner Al Davis, costing him his job after the 1994 season, but the person whom Shell most wants as his right-hand man to begin his second tenure as Raiders coach played a role in Shell's being fired in the first place.

Shell left team headquarters in El Segundo at 11 a.m. on Feb. 2, 1995.
Just two hours later, Mike White, whom Shell never named publicly but who insiders say was one of the three assistant coaches Shell accused of disloyalty, was introduced as the team's new coach at a press conference.

"It was one of the most trying seasons I'd ever been involved in as a coach, player or whatever," Shell would later tell the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier, his hometown newspaper.

White was able to curry favor with Davis in large part because the offensive-oriented White persuaded Davis he could improve Walsh's offense, which failed to establish a consistent running game and surrendered 50 sacks in 1994.

That's what set in motion what must have been five of the most awkward weeks in Art Shell's life.

The Raiders finished 10-6 in 1993, remember, before losing to the Buffalo Bills 29-23 in an AFC divisional playoff game. Heading into the 1994 season they were a popular choice to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

They lost four of their first six games and, although they rebounded to win seven of nine, they were outplayed by the Kansas Chiefs in the season finale and denied a playoff berth.

That season was not unlike many of the seasons that have followed. The team was plagued by inconsistency, lack of discipline (they set an NFL record with 156 penalties) and a lack of cohesion and chemistry.

Internal squabbles became public when quarterback Jeff Hostetler and Shell were involved in a face-to-face confrontation in full view of fans and a national TV audience late in the first half of an overtime loss to Miami.
The shouting match was reportedly the result of Hostetler changing plays that had been shuttled into the huddle by Shell and/or Walsh.

Davis began interviewing coaching candidates while Shell was still serving as head coach. White was dispatched to Phoenix to recruit Joe Bugel as an assistant before Davis made what must have been one of the most agonizing decisions of his career: firing Shell, one of the cornerstones of the team's success in the 1970s and early '80s.

Now it comes full circle.

Davis hasn't had any problem selling his decision to re-hire Shell. For the most part, the decision has been well received, if for no other reason than there were few alternatives.

Shell might have a more difficult time selling his decision to hire Walsh, whose most recent on-field experience was as the coach and director of football operations for the Regional Football League's Mobile Admirals in 1999. Before that, he coached at Idaho State for two years before being asked to resign late in the 1998 season. His two-season record was 6-18.

"It's vitally important for the success of this football team that Tom Walsh be the guy," said Shell's representative, Danny More. "Art knows Tom better than anyone and trusts his offense."

It is an unconventional hire. That's for sure. Then again, convention has little to do with the story of Art Shell and the Raiders.

Shell seems to be betting the farm on a guy (Walsh) who's been completely out of football for a LONG time. I'm not sure I'm thrilled with this hire.

Thoughts?

I gave my two cents...middle of the pack in the early 90's running the offense, doesn't really inspire confidence.

Really I think Art might have fired without thinking this one through.

Walsh is really drawing to an inside straight. Not too impressed. I mean we were somewhat worried about Art being away from the game for a while. This Walsh ]guy has bee nrunning a friggin' Dude Ranch in Idaho? OMG.

Why are you guys looking for reasons to dislike Walsh?

My point about the RB situation was that Shell had one full year with Jackson (well essentially 2 since Jackson arrived when Shell took over in his first year). After that the Allen feud escalated and you had such luminaries as: Nick Bell, washed-up Craig and Dickerson, rookie Greg Robinson and WR/RB Ty Montgomery, Nap McCallum here and there, and finally Harvey Williams trying to carry the rock. And yet Shell still managed to pull something together.

If you look at the last season. Walsh took over a 1-3 offense and helped it to a 9-7 overall record (8-4 with him at the helm). This despite Mike White undermining Shell's authority and possibly Walsh's as well.

I'm not saying I'm excited about the Walsh hiring, but I'm not down on it either.

I compare it to how the press pooh-pooh'ed Shell and pumped up all the other candidates. Al made us accutely aware of how well the press's golden boys have done in the past. Now we're upset about a guy because the press doesn't have any info on him? They had all the info on their golden boys of the past and they still flopped. I guess their approval would make us more comfortable in knowing who Tom Walsh is, but it wouldn't make him any better or worse for the job.

The only thing I can say about it is that it bothers me that Tom Walsh hasn't been around football for 10+ years. He's no Joe gibbs.

As for Shell and his absence from coaching I'll say at least he never was away from football. Besides, Art Shell is a Hall of Fame player. Been there done that if you will.

Tom Walsh? No idea. That is why I say we have to keep an open mind. But that doesn't mean he was a great hire either.

It always come back to the same old thing --- people will tend to go in the direction they have been successful with. In this case it's Shell/Walsh. In Al's case it's Art Shell. Can't say as I blame them but you would have thought they would have explored al lthe possibilities before hiring Walsh. And maybe they did. We have no way of knowing that.

JC
02-16-2006, 11:35 AM
Yeah, that's my concern...we have quite a few people that have been out of the game for quite some time. I do respect the fact that Art wants his guys, no problem with that, just hoping for some young minds that have been in the game.

But guys, what has really changed in football?

Is the blocking all new? Nope.
Are the pass routes all new? Nope.
What can defenses do today that they couldn't in '94? Nothing. They can actually do less.

So what has really changed on offense that either Art or Tom need to know about? The WCO-style picks and rubs and motion to create mismatches? Bill Walsh was using them then. Friends, I know about them and have been out of football over 20 years, and I wasn't taught them back then either. Once football is in your mind, there is no getting it out. Once you're about strategy and finding ways to succeed on the field, it is an obsession.

Who really needs to know about the creative things that can be done on offense? The defensive coordinator. We kept the guy we had, who wasn't that bad.

I think, other than OL where we'll see what can be done, that this is probably the most talented offense Shell has had. I'll grant that Jordan is neither Allen nor Jackson, but Collins is better than Schroeder (career 56% v career 51%), and even though a young Tim Brown would be nice, I think we've got a seriously talented WR corps. If Art and Co. can get the OL humming (still don't think we're close to the talent we had back then) we could be off and winning in a hurry.

JC
02-16-2006, 01:16 PM
I think we are running into a glad half full/half empty discussion...agree to disagree.

I think that bringing a guy that hasn't been in the game for a while that when was here ran mediocre offenses seems foolish, but the Raiders don't do things the conventional way. I realize football doesn't change much, but the stats don't lie. For example, no one questioned Joe Gibbs and his scheme because it was very successful, a top 5 offense. I really wish they would have taken a look at some new blood around here, seemed to work the last time with Gruden?? I obviously want everything to work out with the Raiders, moves like this just don't inspire confidence.

Rupert
02-16-2006, 02:21 PM
But JC, look at the personnel. Do you really think Harvey Williams was that much to talk about? An over-the-hill Rathman blocking. Hostetler with a wounded shoulder and touch-and-go elbow because of the shoudler throwing wounded ducks around the field. Seriously, to get 9 wins out of that collection was quite impressive. Sure the offense was unispiring and lower third in production, but look at the pieces, they weren't top shelf either.

My point is that it has to be taken in context. I don't expect a gun-slinging offense from Art or Tom, but I expect this offense can produce better results than the last couple offenses they had.

JC
02-16-2006, 03:20 PM
Well, let's hope we can get back to that 9+ win level, I think it'd be a miracle, but I'd be thrilled.

It's the easiest schedule we could have asked for, good luck to us!

Rupert
02-16-2006, 04:58 PM
I definitely think we can get back to the 9 win level this season if we add: an OL to complete the picture, an OLB, and a SS.

Those three areas need immediate attention or we can forget it.

If we're going to outscore teams we'll need to get the run going, which will make play action credible. The only way to get the run going is to have a dominant OL. Shell thinks we have the horses, and we might for a more straightforward man (BOB) scheme, but we'll need depth and youth to secure the future and prepare for injuries.

On defense we'll need to be able to man up better against power running teams (new OLB), and we'll need a SS who can cover as well as tackle and support the run (why have we only gotten 2 out of 3 recently  ).

We have better talent than we showed last season. We should have been 7-9 or 8-8 but the coaching decisions before the season blew that possibility out of the water. So getting to 9-7 this season wouldn't be too much of a stretch with the proper personnel upgrades and the right offensive scheme.

I'd pass on Peterson. He hasn't been the same player the last couple of years. Still good, but definately not worth the money he's going to ask for. Think the LB version of C-Wood. Personally, I like the idea of Will Witherspoon. By all acounts he seems to be a very solid player who could be had for a reasonable price.

Our team would be better served by spending the FA dollars wisely than trying to make a big splash IMO. If we came out with Bentley and Witherspoon I would be overjoyed.

Rupert
02-16-2006, 05:27 PM
Peterson and Williams would be very good additions. I'd like a guy like LeCharles Bentley for the OL, and then we can draft the way we always do by throwing caution to the wind and shooting for the moon. Grab Mario or Hawk, and a FB if Tui #2 ain't the answer (which he probably isn't).

brick
02-16-2006, 05:30 PM
gst8 I agree, the Raiders would be better served bringing in some quality players rather that making the big splash. but thats not Al's way. Last year it was Moss and Jordan, the year before it was Sapp. It seems almost every year Al tries to put butts in the seats by signing the biggest name.

As for Walsh, I'll give him the benifit of the doubt for now. The tallent is there, except on the line. build up that line and let the dogs run.

Rupert
02-16-2006, 05:35 PM
Well, Al didn't go for the splash when Gruden was here. It was quality additions with an emphasis on saving money. I could be mistaken, but I remember more often than not being underwhelmed by the acquisitions.

But we've definitely gone for the big hit these last seasons. The truth is you do that to take you over the top when you've got a solid foundation, not build your club.

Well, Gallery will have two of the best in the business to put him straight. The real question is how much slack his 1st round #2 overall status will buy him. How long have we kept Gibson around? He wasn't drafted nearly that high, and I couldn't say he's performed as well either. Also, how long has Sims been out there sitting right on the border of below par? When the options are few you've got to take what's there. How soon we grab a new LT will tell the tale.
