Eleven Angry Men

From December 2006:
Shell admits this year's defense is unlike any he has seen from the Raiders since he entered the NFL in 1968 and laid eyes upon the "Eleven Angry Men," as Shell and others called the Raiders defense.

"I told them when I first got here (this year), 'I'm looking for a defense that's going to be running to the football at all times, and I want the reincarnation of the Eleven Angry Men, when Ben Davidson and those guys were playing,'" Shell said.

Anything less than a AFC Championship is a losing season, I dont care how many Divsion titles a team has, thats not that hard to get.

Winning the AFC title is having a successful season. I dont care how many times the Broncos win 10 games, getting punked in the playoffs is still a losing effort.

The Broncos watched the AFC Championship game just like the Raiders did,..

Well, not with our "Horrible D" and all... we ought to be sure that last year's result will continue in perpetuity.

Of course, we never had a defense watch an offensive player make a catch, argue over who was responsible, and not notice while said offensive player got up and scored a touchdown completely untouched... during a playoff game, no less.

Yes, that is what I'm saying. According to the logic that you've been using in this thread, teams do not and cannot get any better from year to year. Therefore, the Raiders are pre-destined to be horrible and your Broncos are predestined to finish third in the division. so lets see... denver signs a bunch of overpriced FAs. ditches thier vet presense at QB, ditches 2 starting OL, and thier top RB... aquires an overrated CB, decent RB, decent TE, and some overrated DL... and you expect them to move up much? if they do its because KC and SD got worse. However SD is still more talented... and Oak just might be more talented now too. Till ratface proves he can win in the playoffs without John Elway (or even get the playoffs consistantly) then Denver is hardly a team to worry about.

The Broncos: This Year’s Most Overrated Team
by Bill Chuang, 6/22/07

I’ve just started to notice the first of the preseason rankings coming out. While I’m not a big fan of these power rankings, they do make for some interesting reading. One thing I find curious, and even a bit offensive, is the fact that both Prisco from CBS Sportsline and Schrager from Fox Sports have the Broncos ranked 4th overall behind the Colts, Patriots, and Chargers. Reading these, I wondered the same things as I did last year when I read that Peter King had the Dolphins in the Super Bowl – do these guys actually watch any games? This year, King ranked the 32 quarterbacks and has the Bronco’s Cutler ranked number 10 overall, in front of McNabb, McNair, Favre, Pennington, and Roethlisberger.

My biggest problem with both the CBS and Fox rankings as well as King’s rankings is the confidence that they show in Cutler. Obviously, to have the Broncos ranked among the elite, all these prognosticators must think very highly of this second year quarterback. I’m not sure from where this optimism is derived. Cutler took over last year in a very controversial move while the Broncos were still in the playoff hunt at 7-4. The quarterback he replaced, Jake Plummer, had been struggling for the past several weeks, but in the heat of the playoff race, Shanahan was taking a huge risk in replacing his veteran quarterback with this untested rookie. Under Cutler, the Broncos finished 2-3, but one of those wins was due to fumbled snap on a last second chip shot field goal against Cincinnati. The other was against a sinking Arizona team who would fire their coach after the season. Over that 5 game span, he had a 59% completion percentage with 9 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, and a QB rating of 88.5. The Broncos missed the playoffs when they lost their last game to the 49er’s who were double digit underdogs. If Shanahan had stayed with Plummer, the Broncos probably would have made the playoffs.

Schrager of Fox Sports sees Cutler having a breakout year with a Pro Bowl and possibly an MVP type season. Basically he’s saying Cutler will be as good as Manning or Brady this season. Again, I’m not sure what this is based on. Cutler has only started 5 games, and has a slightly above average quarterback rating though a good TD to INT ratio of 9/5. From what I saw of him, I’m not nearly as impressed. He does have a very strong arm and is fairly mobile, but if that’s all it takes, Kyle Boller would not be sitting on the bench in Baltimore. These days, it is all about what is above the shoulders which dictates a quarterback’s success in the NFL. Manning and Brady are successful because they can read defenses, identify the blitzers, and find the open receiver. This takes years of experience to develop. Perhaps Schrager’s confidence actually lies in Shanahan’s ability to develop quarterbacks. Much has been made of Shanahan’s inability to win a playoff game without John Elway. This winless streak was finally broken 2 season’s ago with Jake Plummer. Plummer though was a veteran free agent who had several very good years in Arizona prior to going to the Broncos. Shanahan may have improved Plummer’s game, but obviously not enough to let him finish the past season. The only starting quarterback Shanahan has developed is Brian Griese. The pinnacle of Griese’s career was a Pro Bowl season in 2000, but his game declined since then, and he has been a journeyman, and now backs up Rex Grossman in Chicago. With Shanahan’s record of developing quarterbacks, Schrager’s expectations for Cutler are unfounded.

Denver’s always strong running game should ease Cutler’s development. With the departure of Tatum Bell and the arrival of Travis Henry, the running game should not miss a beat. The receivers are also solid with Javon Walker and an aging, but reliable Rod Smith. Daniel Graham was sign from New England, but is known more for his blocking than his receiving. The offensive line is solid, but may begin to show its age.

Last season, there was talk of the Bronco’s defense being one of the best ever because they gave up just one touchdown over the first 7 games. This came crashing down in a week 8 shootout against Indianapolis. Following that game, they were not nearly as impressive finishing with a respectable, but not intimidating ranking of 13th overall. In the offseason, they lost starting cornerback Darrent Williams to a tragic shooting, but replaced him with Dre’ Bly. This should give them one of the best secondaries in the league with Bly, Bailey, and Lynch, though Lynch is now more of a run stopper and is a liability in coverage. They’ll need this secondary because they are one of the worst teams in getting to the quarterback with only 35 sacks. They attempted to address this deficiency by drafting DE Jarvis Moss in the first round. Their linebacking corps took a big hit when they cut one of their defensive leaders, MLB Al Wilson. DJ Williams will move inside though he has never played there. On the defensive line, they continue to add retreads from Ohio. This time, it’s an overweight and aging Sam Adams, who could not contribute for even a bad Cincinnati run defense last year.

On Special Teams, the Broncos were able to steal Todd Sauerbrun from the Patriots. His steroid enhanced punts could be especially effective in the thin mile high air. Jason Elam returns for his 14th season. The two returners, David Kircus and Quincy Morgan, are decent but will not keep opposing special teams coaches up at night.

I don’t see this team doing better than 9-7, and in the tough AFC, this won’t be good enough for the playoffs. Denver fans will be hitting the slopes early this year.
http://thefootballexpert.com/broncosoverrated070001.html
Didnt know they are moving DJ to MLB...the could be very risky.

BigTron
06-24-2007, 01:27 AM
Wow, that says it all. Denver is so hyped up. Ratface cant win without horse teeth. Daniel Graham got paid wat too much. Travis Henry is solid but has off the field issues. Their Defense is not going to be the same without Al WIlson in there. He was the heart and soul of that unit. DJ WIlliams wont fill those shoes. Champ and Dre Bly are a great combo but Lynch is old and the other safety is who? The d-line is suspect and the O-line is aging. J.Walker was a great pick-up but Rod Smith is ancient. Cutler was 2-3, if anybody wants to fall in love with him go ahead but i still see him as draft climber who is overrated in many ways. Plummer could have taken that team into the playoffs last year. Nuff said.

Who has the best defense in the AFC west? If we arent the worst offense in history we will easily upgrade from last year, thats just common sense. We have no where to go but up on offense. Herm Edwards couldnt run a Wendy's. Mangini made his shit pile into a goldmine in 1 year.

This is the 66th mob's first "Young and Hungry" celebration held outside of raiders HQ. The whole coaching staff (well a dozen at least) go outside (and later some players) to sat thank you. KK, if you listen, asks everyone their name, looks them in the eye and thanks them. And if you believe him, he just "found out" they were out there and got the coaches together to go out and visit.

I posted it here, because they ask Ryan if the D has a nickname yet, and he says not yet. They offer, "Mob Hitmen" and give Ryan (and all the coaches) tee-shirts that also says "Just Hitmen" on the back.

Also, after watching this I'm changing my "go have a beer with" selection to Ryan.

Edit: I guess, they offer "The Art of the Mob" on the front of their shirts. No wonder they're giving them away.

I'm barking up a very tall tree here of course. I still like him (always defended him, even during the 3/4 experiment), think he is a perfect DC for Oakland, his players love him, etc. etc. etc.

I'm just sayin'

He looks like a fatter Jerry Garcia. I agree about the weight thing. Some of these coaches are huge. Andy Reid and Ralph Freidgan from Maryland both look like they drink Chicken Parm milkshakes for breakfast. The white afro isnt exactly helping the whole image thing. I dont mind it so much, but im sure some teams arent going to want him being the face for the franchise looking like that.

Good. I'm going to start sending Mob Ryan buckets of chicken and Snickers bars. Get him big as a freakin' hot air balloon then he'll be forced to stay the Raiders DC forever.
Good news: His brother Rex, lost like 50 pounds this year
Bad News: Rob found it

I thought that too. Like he keeps a bottle of Wild Turkey in his desk drawer. Why do I think I'm going to hear some cool Rob Ryan stories in the next 20 years? Old School Raider, with his S&B hair he looked more like one of the 66Mob than a coach.

I may be completely out of the loop here, but what the heck is the 66th Mob? I'm thinking rap group?....

They're a good group of raider fans that raise money for non-profit organizations and are a NPO themselves: http://www.the66thmob.com/

MOB HISTORY
The 66th Mob family was established in 1999 on Mob Alley (the corner of 66th Ave and Coliseum Way) in Oakland Ca, across the
street from the north gate of the McAfee Coliseum. This is the greatest place to be prior to every Raiders home game. Our name, "The 66th Mob", is a nickname derived from tailgating on 66th avenue. This, our home base, is known as "Mob Alley", which is a drug free zone. At this location, our origins began with our being the first fans in Oakland to start tailgating the night before every Raiders home game. After a few years passed, this overnight tailgating tradition spread to other fans. Today it has become the norm for every gate surrounding the Coliseum to have fans tailgating overnight prior to a Raiders home game. What originally started as a two person overnight tailgate, has become a charitable organization locally and nationwide. It has carried
over the borders of the Raider Nation into the world at large, assisting people and organizations of various kinds in an unprecedented fashion.
We welcome all sectors of the community and open our doors to all media outlets (television, radio, and newspapers), law enforcement agencies, the local school systems/districts, city officials, local politicians, churches, and all charitable organizations year round.

Thanks, R4Life.

The 66th Mob seems pretty cool.

The fat guy in the Klingon costume for a practice in June ... still not so cool.

Drug Free zone? I guess the massive amounts of MGD, Bud Light and Tecate don't qualify as a "drug" ??? Bwahahahahahahahahaha

Further proof that we should "Legalize It". Tell me, which is worse?
