Guess it's appropriate to put this thread in the Raiders War Room...

I know there will be three other threads started but I thought I give it a shot anyway. :p

I don't know what else there is to be said at this point...about 15 hours until show time.

KIFFIN DENIES RUSSELL REPORT

ESPN's Ed Werder reports that Raiders coach Lane Kiffin has denied a report from ESPN.com's Michael Smith that the Raiders have told quarterback JaMarcus Russell that he will be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Werder and Adam Schefter of NFL Network also report that the Raiders are talking to the Browns about a flip-flop of the No. 1 and No. 3 selections, which presumably would allow the Browns to get Russell.

Meanwhile, Schefter says that the Browns would otherwise take left tackle Joe Thomas at No. 3. But we're hearing talk that within the past couple of days owner Randy Lerner has told G.M. Phil Savage and coach Romeo Crennel that their options are Russell, Brady Quinn, and Calvin Johnson.

It was Schefter who initially reported several weeks ago that Lerner had given the directive to Savage and Crennel to take a quarterback.

You have no idea. I have been to two drafts:

1. Mel Kiper/Bill Tobin. The draft dweebs absolutely roared during that whole exchange. It was funny. BTW, Raiders took Rob Fredrickson (I wanted Mario Bates:o )

2. The Eli Manning draft. He was treated awful by the crowd, just assaulted. And he was coming to New York.

I would never go again. It's not healthy to be around that many 40 year-olds that live with their parents.

I'm not even watching on TV. Just the NFLN fee on the puter.

I have decided I will not hear Chris Berman's voice all day.

Frankly, people, the real intrigue is now with:

2.1

and

Moss.

Rich Gosselin, in his latest mock, had Alan Branch and Anthony Spencer falling out of the 1st round. It'll take a special curveball at 2.1 for me to be happy with passing on both of those guys at 2.1. I actually put Branch in my Little Al, based just Goose's mock.

Moss? We get a 3rd, that'd be sweet. I don't want him in New England.

Kiffin: It was Russell all along (http://www.ibabuzz.com/raidersblog/2007/04/28/kiffin-it-was-russell-all-along/)

Posted by Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer on Saturday at 10:09 am

So if the Raiders were so intent on taking JaMarcus Russell, why all the drama?
"We were just making you guys wait," Raiders coach Lane Kiffin said Saturday morning at his first press briefing about a half-hour after his club selected the LSU quarterback with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. "It would have been too easy to pick right away. We've got to keep the spotlight for a few minutes."

To hear Kiffin tell it, Russell was going to be a Raider long ago. Which is what he is supposed to say, of course. Draft days are all about a unified front.

As much as anything Russell said to the Raiders during their meetings, it was how those around him responded to the quarterback that helped make the difference.
Kiffin said there was no timetable as to when Russell would play.

"It might be from Day 1, it might be in Year 2," Kiffin said. "Matt Leinart had never thrown a pass in college and won a national championship in his first year. There are all kinds of different scenarios."

As for Randy Moss, Kiffin confirmed the Raiders are listening to trade offers, suggested the receiver could still be on the team at the end of the day, then turned the talk back to Russell.

Brown is a reach at that point, I totally agree. But paying a RB with injury concerns at 5 with the money Edge is already making.... behind that line? It has disaster written all over it. Worst thing possible is to have to face a jilted Brady Quinn twice a year for a decade or so, knowing we made the wrong pick.

Best case scenario is that JR will be the QB we keep hearing about, and the point is moot. :)
